Seph took a breath. "You of all people should know there is no way to kill the Kyuubi." He said, turning his head to look back at her. "You can only seal it away inside of something else."

Don't you just love the way irony always bites you back?
"Me of all people?" She grinned dryly. "Really, just because we're overrun by foxes doesn't mean I'm the expert."
She stepped off the porch, joining Seph at the fountain. "What's it doing back?"

He grinned at her, "They all seem to love you, though. Technically, it's not 'back.' It's been here since it was evicted from me. I sealed it inside of another fox, one the Protector picked out. She'd been living in the Dojo since then.. we just didn't realize it was a going to be a mother."

"I've spent the past few days wondering what in the world was wrong with me, you know." She touched the water in the fountain and a thread of it rose, winding around her hand. "Thinking I was seeing or hearing things that weren't there. I only just figured it out this morning." The water froze into beads of ice, dropping back into the fountain with soft sounds.
"Got some good practice out of trying to avoid being inside, though."

Seph's eyebrow rose. "The Kyuubi's been speaking to you?" His eyes darted to the ring of water, following the ice cubes as they fell back into water.

"No, of course not. It was more like...like knowing something was wrong with the picture in front of you, but being unsure what." There are better metaphors, but this one works. "It was disconcerting."

He released the breath he'd been holding. "What was it you figured out? What was wrong with the picture?" He assumed he was allowed to ask since she had brought it up.

Several things. Not all of them relevant.
"That the Kyuubi's presence was there again, of course." She looked at him with a raised eyebrow. "What did you think we were talking about?"

He shrugged. "I wasn't sure. It sounded like the topic of conversation had changed. It's harmless in it's current state. The will of the fox easily overpowers the will of the fox demon."

"How long does something like that last?" Her expression turned serious again. "I'm not exactly thrilled with keeping such a serious threat warm and fed under our own roof."

"Indefinately. A fox has no desire for ultimate power, so the Kyuubi has little to no effect on the fox's mind." He paused, his expression becoming serious as well. "As undesirable as it may be, it's either keep it fed and under our own roof or risk it dying out in the wild and thusly releasing the Kyuubi."
He closed his eyes and shook his head, "Neither is a wonderful choice, but it's safest to keep it here until I can find a more permanent way of dealing with the demon."

"Unfortunately, foxes and fox demons share a cunning initiative." She shrugged indifferently. "But it's your responsibility."
It was almost an instant switch from serious to rather flippant. "So. How have things been while I was away?"

A responsibility I'm well equipped to handle. Twenty-two years of experience under my belt.
"Search me. It's been like a cemetery lately. As soon as Mai returns, we'll begin lessons again. That includes you, so be ready. I know it's been a while, so we'll go over the basics again, for both of your sakes."

"I was actually referring to how long it's been since I last held a lesson. But while we're here, show me what you've been practicing." He took a step back, turning to face her.
