(New RP)

Two days and a delivery from the labs later Gaius and Richard had finished. The product of their labors was a handsome looking bulletin board with a shingled overhang with the words "COMMUNITY MESSAGE BOARD" chisled into the top.

It had take them a day and a half to put the frame together and the last day was spent detailling. Richard had carefully carved the words with Gaius had sanded and stained. Now all that was left was to put the thing in the ground.

The two stood some distance from the Village center's doors, trying to figure out the best place to plant the board, Shovels lay at their feet as they surveyed the area.

Richard hadn't really been feeling that well all day and had let Gaius do more of the strenuious work without much protestation. Still his new Haiwian shirt and shorts were soaked with sweat and his had a slight cough.

Despite that, he was smiling ear to ear.

Gaius sucked on his cheek, looking over the area with a critical eye. "I still say some place closer to the wall would be best, so it's viewable, but not getting in the way of foot traffic..." He looked to Richard for his thoughts. The poor guy was looking pretty badly today. Gaius had determined that once this project was done, he'd see Richard took a break to lie down. Last thing either of them needed was the guy having heart failure!

Rubbing his dirty hand off on his equally grimey pants and not getting either of them much cleaner, Gaius picked up one of the shovels and tapped it against his shoe. "Maybe near one of the doors, you think?"

Richard stroked his chin, feeling the stubble, he had forgotten to shave this morning. "Well we want it to be used, no ignored so maybe blocking a little traffic wouldn't be a bad idea. Of course we don't want somebody who's say, a rhino, decide to walk through it." He looked at Gaius to wink a bleary eye.

"Maybe if we angle it on the path a bit?"

"Hm, kinda like one of those sign boards you see along the side of hiking trails and stuff? Sure, I think that'd work!"

Gaius stepped forward to where Richard indicated and made a mark with his shovel for one of the posts, then pulled out a measuring tape. Crouching, Gaius measured off the space between where the two beams would stick into the ground, and made another mark for the second one. Once that was done, he looked again at Richard to make sure it was good for him, since the older man was more the manager in this situation. Once he got the go-ahead, Gaius started digging away at one of the points, sticking his spade into the ground and crunching it down with a foot before hauling out the clumps of dirt, which he just dropped to the side.

Richard nodded. "Looks good to me."

Carefully lowering the board onto ground he hurried to grab the other shovel and start on the other hole. They were so close to finishing this project that he could muscle on through it without a problem. With a huff. Richard drove the shovel into the dirt and into a rock just below the surface. CLANG!

"Figures eh?" He grinned at Gaius and started find the edges of what appeared to be a good 10 inch wide stone.

Gaius scowled, but quickly broke again into a smile and shook his head. "Ah well, we can move it over a bit, rather than fighting with whatever's there. Just hope it's not some foundation we happened on." The horse-man brushed a hand over his brow, smearing it with a line of dirt as he pushed dampened bangs out of his eyes. "See if you can find the edge and dig there..."

His own pit was coming along decently. It was difficult, since the earth around the village was pretty well packed, but the recent rain storms had loosened it up enough that he could manage with a bit of effort. Gaius turned back to finishing off his own, then he'd help Richard.

Richard caught Gaius' look out of the corner of his eye. Hmpf. He was fine, just a bit over tired maybe. He'd sleep later, after this was done. He manuevered his shovel under the rock and with a might grunt, HEAVED! The rock resisted at first, as Richard strained againist it, the something snapped in the ground. The shovel lauched upward catapulting the rock high into the air. Richard fell backwards on to his a**, landing with an Ooooofff. Meanwhile the rock slammed in to one of the village center's window striking with a solid THUD. The window was unharmed, being bullet proof glass.

Richard had meant to do that. Yes he did. He grinned as he blinked to clear his suddenly blurry vision. It cleared and Richard started to pull himself up with his shovel.

Gaius jumped at the loud thud and spun around, hair standing on end. "What was that?!" Seeing Richard pulling himself up off the ground, he frowned slightly and set aside his shovel to go and extend a hand to the guy. A joking grin played across his flattened face as he worked to help Richard up. "Don't tell me that crash was you falling over!"

Richard accepted Gaius' hand and pulled himself up, momentarily subjecting Gaius to his 300+ pound bulk. He grinned sheepishly. "Lets just say I think that rock will find better places to be than in MY hole in the future." Richard's face was still flushed from the extertion and his breath had a slight wheeze to it.

"Now where was I?" He took a step toward the hole.

Tommy looks up from the credits rolling across the screen of the entertainment room's television. He'd been spending way too much time there as of late...just watching movie after movie...an old passion of his. A loud thunk against the window broke him out of his movie-induced hypnosis and he looks around.

"The hell was that?" he asks no one before groaning with the effort to stand. He clutches a waterbottle filled with a muddy red colored liquid in a deformed hand before making his way to the door and opening it. He blinks against the bright sun, feeling rather sluggish...damn those nocturnal tendencies. As his vision adjusted to the sunlight, he was able to make out two figures he's met before...one still unchanged and the other...oh God...Gaius...so soon? He slowly makes his way toward them, repeating his question which was at first intended for the air:

"The hell was that?" he asks amiably with a grin, nodding toward the entertainment room.

Gaius grunted, digging his feet in, muscles straining as he was half-pulled down himself as Richard climbed back up. Soon enough, Richard was back on his feet, but Gaius couldn't help but notice how tired the guy was looking, with the bedraggled moustache and sweat-stained clothes. He took a step forward, grabbing Richard's shovel to stay it, and gave his best friendly smile. "Hold on a sec there! You've already done plenty of the work. Why don't you take a seat on one of the benches and let me finish this part?" He gestured over beside the caf where a couple wooden benches sat in the shade.

"It won't take more than a couple minutes! Just leave it to me, eh?" he grinned, turning to stick the shovel in the hole before Richard could protest.

Richard was about to protest. He had more than enough left in him to see this through, no matter how tired he was.

Fortunately for Gaius and for Richard, Tommy's appearance provided a graceful way out of the situation. Richard turned when he heard the familar voice. "Hey there Tommy." Richard gave a little wave. "Gaius and I are just doing a little community improvement. Mind the dust and all that."

Richard coughed voliently a few times and thumped his chest a few times. His eye fell to the nearby water cooler. He turned to Gaius, "I'll just take a quick drink and then I'll finish off the hole."

Tommy stops a little ways from the both of them, suddenly feeling like he may be intruding. That...and suddenly feeling self-conscious. The way he has to hold his hand up just to make sure his fingers don't drag on the ground...he shakes his head and looks between the two, his grin coming back.

"Community improvement, eh? A message board?" he looks over to what Gaius and Richard had created before looking back to the pegasus-in-time. "Hey Gaius..." he says in a knowing voice.

He frowns a bit as Richard begins to cough, "You alright, man?"

Gais looked up from his digging at the voice and froze with his foot still on the shovel. He stared. The long fingers, the strange nose, the fangs... Somewhere in his mind, he made the connection, and was disturbed by it.

"T-Tommy...?" he ventured. "Is that you?" He fought to hide the worry in his face, but he was fighting a losing battle. There was no way to get around it, the changes had not treated Tommy kindly, no matter how he looked at the guy. Still, he put on a friendly, if nervous, smile, and nodded to him. "Hey..." He scratched at the back of his neck and shrugged. "Sorry I haven't stopped by in a while..."

At Tommy's change in attention, Gaius looked over as well and frowned concernedly. "Hey, take a break already! You've been working in the sun all morning, you're probably dehydrated! Don't worry about this hole, I'll finish it up!"

Richard waved Gaius off, "Yeah, yeah. I'm fine, I surivived three years in Baghdad. This a cool day there and at least here I'm not dodging land mines." Never the less Richard dragged himself towards to the water cooler his limbs felt heavy than normal. He wished he had his cane. The waddle was a bit more of a wobble. He bent over to fill a glass from the cooler and felt his pulse rush to his head. It was too fast... Way too fast. He filled his glass and forced himself upright. The pulse in his ears did not go away.

He smiled at Tommy and Gaius and began to drink. He was fine. Really.
