As I spoke up, so did the grey-skinned girl from the elevator. If she had actually been acknowledged by the Arashikage before me, then I probably would have punted her out of the tower, but thankfully Toso's attention fell to me first. However, it wasn't in the way I was expecting. There was definitely recognition there, as well as an immense excitement as he stepped forward and placed his hands on my shoulders. Words tumbled out of his mouth until he was basically shouting. Waited for what now? "I-" I started when he caught his breath for a second, his focus falling to the girl that had spoken, but he continued again with words even more confusing than the last. Something about entering the real world?
He turned sharply though without releasing me, his vice-like grip resulting in a flinch as his pressed into the scar on my left shoulder, and basically dragged me over to the shark-looking female, who had managed to get to her feet and out of the elevator. As he did, he continued speaking. "I know who-" Yet again he spoke over me, and I grimaced. He presented me to the girl, but released my left shoulder, bringing with it a small wave of relief. I knew he couldn't have known about my injuries, but damn. Toso went on, announcing to the room I was the former Raikage--wait, not the actual one?
Finally my full attention fell to him, clarity shining through the moment of confusion. I wasn't entirely sure what he meant by me not being the real thing, but at least I knew now he thought I was some sort of sentient creation of his. He stopped speaking, marveling me instead while he mind drifted off to some far off reach of his memory. I took that chance to try to clarify. "Toso," I said firmly, hoping to draw his thoughts back to the present. I brushed his other hand off of my shoulder and pulled the tattered headband from my pocket once more. "I'm the real thing." I waited a heartbeat to let it sink in. Hopefully he believed it, but if he was convinced I was dead, it might not be enough. Again that worry arose that he would think I was some sort of impostor, at which I wasn't sure what he would try to do. I didn't have nearly the strength that I used to have, and I hadn't drawn my weapon to fight or even train in over a year, so if it came down to that, I would likely lose. I sighed and continued. "I can explain where I've been and everything, but this is the only chance I really have left."

What is this weirdo going on about...? Thresher winced and backed away from the squid man as if on instinct. His weird way of talking, the way that she didn't know most of the words he was saying. The black haired man in front of her, who looked just about as confused as she was, was definitely definitely real. After all, they seemed to be good friends on the outside, if not just a strange pair. The shark-girl's eyes narrowed as she caught a whiff of something in the air, some kind of emotion hanging around the three of them. Thresher could see that the squidman, who she guessed was a 'kage,' was very happy to see the man, but he smelled it too. Like a sweet honey.
But the other man's scent wasn't the same. It was mixed with the same scent, but had an underlying feel of...uncertainty? Thresher couldn't find the word for it from her limited vocabulary, but it was certainly contagious as it made Thresher feel like a third wheel, or like she was intruding.
The second thing she noticed was the headband. The man with black hair, another 'kage' according to the squid, held it up. Thresher's focus went to the one tied around her arm. It wasn't the same symbol, but the overall style was the same.
Wait... "My name's not 'First.'" The shark said firmly. She finally caught on that the man misunderstood her name. "It's Thresher. And I was told to come see you to be a 'shinobi.'"
Something in the Arashikage's eyes changed. Like a camera's lens or a reptilian, they blinked without closing his eyelids. The deep natural grey hues of his past eyes were gone and replaced if not occasionally peeking beneath a layer of vein imitating microwires. That said they weren't filled with any more emotion than what was common. Maychance it surprised Kaileer that the man that literally spent his winter in trashcans became the kage and the man that replaced Shiro. That aside with the confession that Kaileer was indeed the 'real' Kaileer the kage's mood took a diametric shift in the opposite direction. "Are you really?" due to the consistent flatness of the Kage's voice it was difficult to say if he was being genuinely taken aback or skeptic, albeit it was the former. Ten years. No word nor sign, to venture into the mountains only to never return. Ten years within that time, a man had made his peace. The aptly named 'Ikkakugan' moved rapidly as if the man was entering a rem sleep before they recentered and affixed themselves back on Kaileer's person, eerily as if the very reflection of the kage processing the information he was just given like a machine. There was much to process, the old guard returning with Soraru and now the Kage himself all seemed all the too convenient, especially what with the sudden surge of an all-around other species the kage was considering adopting behind their clouded walls. Was this all an elaborate inside job involving the yokai? Was it connected? The kage within his right to be paranoid. He wanted to make a sanctuary not an inescapable hell but if this was the true Kaileer then perchance that possibility of hell being unleashed would be all the less possible with another strong arm.
If anything his enthusiasm had halted and fell almost as if rather than the real Kaileer he'd have preferred his improbable possibility. At least then he wouldn't have to consider the possible contingencies. Plotting, scheming, the long con. Toso was getting far to familiar with these kinds of individuals what with the recent disaster that was Kato Inuzuka who was amassing a army of monstrous hybrids under his nose. "Chance at what exactly bloop?" Toso would shake his head and cut himself and the conversation off simultaneously at this time did Thresher correct him moving the conversation. His eyes moving into his peripherals before raising a hand. "Ah, nary mind that now. I'm sure there will be plenty of time for talking some other day. We can talk of a possible re-enlistment then but until then pardon my frankness but you look like a homeless vagrant Kai-nii." Toso would provide Kaileer what would appear to have been a small device of some sort of which one of his tentacles procured without himself so much as moving. "Tend to those wounds first. After all I've a lot of paperwork in order involving bringing back an individual who was labeled deceased."

Shifted in her seat a bit, she propped her head up with her fingers on the side of her head and her legs were crossed as she bounced the front one. Nozomi did a small snort when Toso had the nerve to do a dad joke to a new shinobi, calling her First. Then the odd man had gone on about the stranger having been his senpai 10 years ago.
10 years ago. She wasn't even in Arashigakure. 10 years ago, she was a new shinobi herself and suddenly found herself in war with those monsters. She tasted the bile in her mouth when she first threw up at one of the creatures. Now? She was sadly used to it. The grosser, the more normal it was to her. His body language and that tone of voice as if almost desperate was strong and realistic. The joke seemed to pass the girl's head which means she could possibly be a serious shinobi. Corrected the Arashigakure on her name, Nozomi just continued to bounce her front leg. Nozomi couldn't up but to overhear the conversation, after all, if they wanted it private, they could've gone to the office. Her interest was piqued when he said he had a lot of paperwork to do in bringing back someone who was labeled deceased. She assumed that he meant Sev or another shinobi that she possibly doesn't know.
Man. She doesn't have many friends but to her, it was slightly better that way. When her name was called as she sighed softly and removed her hand. Her hands were now resting on her leg and her front leg had stopped bouncing. She stood up straight as she showed no emotion. "There isn't just a single responsibility and expectation of a shinobi. Each one has their own. Some, to protect the civilians of the Arashigakure and supposedly, the land around it but once we took the sky, that was a whole different matter," Her voice went from honey to bitter venom at the last part, but then it switched back, "Some, loves to kill. That would be ANBU. Torturing. Getting information by all means necessary. Even assassination under the Arashigakure orders but even then, that's been lax." It seemed that the principal was still not happy about letting a ***** criminal alive. She sure does wish that they would let her cut his tiny solider at least. She leaned forward, her forearms now resting on her leg as she was looking at the girl named Thresher right in the eye. "There's the trackers. Onin. To bring back people who the Arashigakure deemed traitors. Maybe even need to bring them back dead. Most preferably, alive, so we can spend more money for them to be in prison." Her smile was sweet and sickening before shifting to just regular talking, "There's front lines when something happens. Defensive. Medical. There's a lot really but if I was forced to put what is in common... hardships. Deaths. Betrayal. Becoming a shinobi will either succeed you or break you." Then she leaned back and sighed. "It broke me." She said honestly. "So now, I'm basically a zombie soldier. I would die for my students and I will honor Arashigakage's certain orders. My heart hasn't been warm for years." Then she smiled softly, a real one, "Guess a broken spirit and heart makes a good soldier." She mused to herself. "If you are the lucky one that succeeds and rise from the ashes... you would bring the next revolution we would all need. Or the spirit. Who knows. Future sure as hell can't tell us the answers." Then her hues glanced over to Toso expecting a reprimand or something odd.

I barely kept myself from flinching at the sudden change in Toso's demeanor, but in a way that was near imperceptible. Because nothing changed externally, aside from something in his eyes. Almost like they were... analyzing. Mechanically. I kept my gaze even, hiding how unnerved the motion made me. He then spoke in the same flat tone as before, bit I couldn't decide if he believed me or not. It could have been skepticism--which honestly was half expected--, or literally any other emotion given how hard it was to read him in the first place. A good trait to have. A trait I'd never mastered. Toso definitely didn't show the same enthusiasm he had a moment before, which dropped my hopes only lower. And if he was suspicious, I didn't blame him. Again, I was supposed to be dead.
He echoed my words as a question, but before I could respond, he shook off the conversation, attention turning to the grey-skinned girl--who introduced herself as 'Thresher'. She wanted to become a shinobi. Toso continued speaking, raising a hand in...dismissal, I supposed? We would have to talk at a later time because I wasn't particularly presentable and should take care of myself first. Talking later didn't really stop me from being homeless or put food in my stomach but I surrendered to my fate. He then produced a device of some sort from his clothes, handing it to me without so much as an explanation. I flipped it over a couple of times in slight confusion while he recommended having my 'wounds' tended to and mentioned having a lot of paperwork to do because of me not being dead. There wasn't much the hospital could do for me, outside of maybe some medication. But maybe I could at least clean up a bit while there and maybe mooch some food off of them, as much as I hated the thought.
The shift in attention actually stung a bit. I supposed I'd hoped for some sort of... I don't know what I hoped for, really. But I settled for knowing that someone I recognized held the title of 'kage', even if he was one of the last people I expected. Sticking the mystery device in my pocket to mess with later, I watched the interchange between Toso, Thresher, and the red-headed woman. The Arashikage wanted the red-head to give an explanation of the responsibilities of a shinobi. The woman complied, but I yet again had to resist a grimace as she delivered her address in a way that was sickening. Sure, she gave brief descriptions of several paths of the shinobi lifestyle, but it felt wrong. I agreed with her, and I understood the intention, but it was so jarring I wouldn't have blamed Thresher for turning tail and leaving. This woman, Uzumaki-san, she had been through a lot since taking this path in life.
"If... I can add my two cents," I offered once she had finished, speaking up without really thinking about it. "What she said is true. You're going to see a lot of bad things happen if you decide to wear that headband." I gestured at the band on Thresher's arm. "You're going to see friends die, betrayals, and a lot of scary s**t that'll still be there when you close your eyes at night.
"And what for?" I stepped closer, shifting my weight to my uninjured leg, and glanced toward Uzumaki-san. My words were still for the shark girl, though. "Well, a lot of things. Personal gain, vengeance, among other things. In my opinion most of those things aren't becoming of this lifestyle. Trust me; I spent the better part of a decade trying to drive that into the thick skulls of a bunch of bloodthirsty giants." I gave a small but wistful smile. We're not heroes, and we never will be, but that doesn't mean we can't live for something. We're comrades in arms built into weapons to protect those that can't defend themselves. We risk our lives so they don't have to. But don't die for them." My gaze returned to Thresher. Assuming she didn't pull away, I set a hand on her shoulder as I stepped past her. "Live for them."
Releasing the girl's shoulder, I limped away with a parting wave over my shoulder. Then, shoving my hands in my pockets, I stepped into the elevator to start the short journey to the ground below.

The very air in the room suddenly shifted as all three adults turned their attention to Thresher. Something didn't feel right, like a feeling that she was being hunted crept down the shark's spine. The logical part of her brain knew that they weren't going to hurt her' if they were then they'd have done it by now. But the girl still felt like she was being...analyzed. Like something at a zoo. And because of that very sensation, all of Thresher's instincts were telling her to run off, to be anywhere but here. In one sense it was a feeling she was used to. After all, the sharkgirl knew all about what it was like to hunt and be hunted. But in another sense, it was entirely new to her this uneasy feeling. Thresher could feel the nerve rising up and making her body instinctively lock up. On reflex she gulped, just a little audibly.
It was like she had finally been shocked out of her laissez-faire attitude.
So the woman-the Uzumaki?-spoke up at request of the Squid-Tosokurui. It was the first time the woman in the room had said anything relevant to Thresher since the conversation started, and the girl found herself hanging on every word she said. Hardships? The Uzumaki reeked of sorrow as she spoke. So much that it almost made Thresher flinch. Whatever it was that she had done with her life, or whatever it was that she'd seen affected her greatly...but it didn't take keen senses or any more than two brain cells to figure that one out. It just hung around her like a cloud.
The room was silent as Thresher mulled over what she had been told. Until the last man-Kai something- spoke up. Where the Uzumaki's words seem more factual, Kai's seemed more...inspiring? Instead of talking about what a ninja could he spoke more about why they do what they do. It made her think of the man Thresher had found before coming here. The shinobi who was dying close to her home, who she randomly decided to loot. He had died for something. Family, friends, this very village? None of it made sense to the shark: who would be willing to die for anything, let alone others? Whatever it had been, it was enough to bring that man back from the dead for one instant. To tell her if she took his gear then she would need to carry out the ninja way.
The headband on her arm suddenly felt very heavy.
Kai's hand clasping her shoulder brought her back down to her, the contact jolting her from her memories.As he walked away, she clenched her fist and stared at the other two. "I get that it's a big deal, I've seen people die for this." Thresher made sure to stare right back back into the red head's eyes as she spoke. "The man who gave me this band."She turned her arm so they could see the Storm village band on her arm. "Instead of using the last of his energy to survive, used his last breaths to tell me to pursue the life of a shinobi if I took it. Obviously it was important enough to him that he died trying to get someone else to do it." Thresher took a solid step forward. "And I intend to find out what makes it so special. I intend to find out why this is something worth dying over. To find something to live for."
Toso would proceed with his now all too common sigh of exasperation. The girls enthusiams while they were honorable and just, weren't they all? The Arashikage never took pleasure in having to see anyone younger than the age of eighteen enlist, in fact he'd have had it so an individual would have needed to be at least twenty one if he had it his way. Yet, so deeply engrained was it in the system of shinobi he'd face a backlash that not even he thought he could survive. Especially with the severing of their ties with the militant forces of the lightening lands. He'd place his hand on Thresher's shoulder and give the faux smile of stoicism he often did. "Well, if that's the case, I suppose you'll be in need of enlistment documentation. Since your skills for the for the most part are to be defined the academy will be the first place you'll be headed for an aptitude test. Ms.Uzumaki can aid you in being the head of the establishment. bloop." He'd look to Nozomi, a woman whose spirits seemed shattered wear with all, what with her explanation on what it meant to be a shinobi.
She wasn't wrong, had Kaileer not chimed in with the dutifulness attached it could have easily crushed the spirits of a enthusiatic conscript. Although, it would have been a lie not to think that the Kage was actually partially hoping that would have been the case. The red head would receive a gentle pat on the back from the nations leader. "Ms.Uzumaki..if it's really so burdensome you can always retire as a shinobi bloop. Focus on academia. Had I not taken some time away to serve as a simple chef I'd have likely found myself falling apart long before the title of Kage was given to me." The kage very under the rug like implied that he himself was also to some degree falling apart. Arashikage, Kagami, Kenshin's distaste, attempted political assassination etc. A look again similar to before when talking to Kaileer about the simpler times glimmered but lasted only for a brief second.
In a puff of smoke documents appeared in his hands. "All that aside, is there anything else? I've some things to attend to, such as a integration policy, checking the dossier for individuals qualified enough to scour an area of the once land of mist for an anomaly, and well...and influx of resident complaints about...clowns? Oh and...." he'd have a letter stating 'TnT Industries foreclosed on the grounds of unathorized and dangerous practices, Ika-Shokuji audited for five years of tax evasion.' Toso coughed up blood slightly...or was that red ink? "A lot of accounting ahead of me." A pained smile that's right, Homura a.k.a his 'ex-wife' handled the resteraunts tax papers ever since breaking it off he'd utterly forgotten to file said taxes. Life is hard. Threshers eyes lit up as her lips already into a rather large, rather toothy grin. She was gonna be a ninja! And all she had to do was pass some stupid test? And who cares about documentation or whatever? She was gonna be a ninja! The excitement was written plain as day all over her face and with her body language. The tips of her hair seemingly raising a little as energy just welled up within in and overflowed from her! “I’m not gonna let you down Toso-Ika! (squid)” Thresher turned and ran just as the elevator opened up, revealing the man that led her in the first place. As the doors slid shut, the shark girl was visibly bouncing despite trying to desperately play it cool.

The man who was previous Raikage and the last Raikage or so she remembers, spoke up and wanted to add his two cents. She leaned onto her hand as she gave him her attention. As he finished putting in his thoughts, she couldn't help but give him a small smile. Just like that, she respects him and she doesn't even know him. He's a good man. Seen a lot as well. Nozomi watched him limp away as she turned her attention back to Thresher, not saying anything as it was obvious that the girl was conflicted.
Does she feel bad? No. She wasn't the one to sugarcoat a damn thing. Her eyebrow rose as the girl continues to explain that a shinobi had given her the headband right before he died as she mentally scowled but remained expressionless. 'The ******** was he thinking.' She thought to herself. Nah. If she was going to die and there were citizens, she would make sure that they can't get ahold of her headband.
If she was going to die. She mentally snorted at herself. As if a good friend of hers, Kagerou, would let her die. Though, she wasn't sure if she should be grateful or not. Nozomi realized she had changed after that. Or was after the deaths of her fiance and her family that caused her to change? Maybe it was the move to Arashigakure? Or yes to all? Who knows. Death was funny. Toso spoke after Thresher and wished for her to do the aptitude test. Then she heard him talk as she paused for a moment and shook her head. "Being a shinobi and the Academy is all I have left right now." Which was true. There was Kagerou of course but she was her own woman and from what she heard, that woman seems to never stop. NO family. No close friends besides the vile stubborn nurse. Although she had to admit, to retire and focus on sorely the academy was.. an alluring thought. "Yes sir, there-" She froze as he mentioned about the land of mist and coughed off something. She saw the hint of red. She was sure to call Kagerou on him.
"Please consider me be part of the team to go to the Land of Mist." Her voice changed. She went from emotionless to soft. "Before I forget, I wish for certain students to graduate. We were under attack and they handled it beautifully. Honestly, they are beyond their academy skills. To hold them back any further would only harm them. I also wish to learn of the higher and more complicated jutsu." She stood there. The shark girl was gone in a blur and that was okay. If she was a student now, she was going to see her around the academy sometime.
Toso waited to recount what Nozomi would say? What this? Permission to graduate? From him? It seemed the past principal wasn't very clear on the duties purveyed before he retired. Had Claudius the enacting Vice Principal at the time actually cared about his position rather than thinking it a chore he'd have been a better candidate to have enlightened the red head. A hand on her shoulder and a softness to his voice Toso would make it rather clear. "Ms. Uzumaki. If you want to carry both on your shoulders that's your decision. I don't know what Mr.Ushida told you before you were given your position bloop, but what you need to know is all judgments in regards to academia is ultimately in your hands. What students learn, what scrolls they have access to, what lessons are right. If you believe that your students are ready for promotion then you need only send the documents for us to update our records. Your position, is one given to you because you've earned the trust of the village, and by proxy my trust to make such decisions. So long as your students aren't doing anything so crass as say I dunno robbing an airship and committing homicide your integrity as the principal of Arashikage shouldn't come into question." The kage said not knowing in the slightest that what he'd just said in passing jest was EXACTLY what was happening now.
Suddenly came a loud booming explosion that echoed through the village. A red light on his temple lit up. He let go of Nozomi's shoulder and immediately shifted into a more serious face hidden behind a half smile as his hand moved toward the side of his glasses what currently masqueraded as goggles. "Report bloop." The Arashikage's face remained cold and stiff. The only hint of the occurrences going on being the broken sentences. "What do you mean? How? SAME!? Who? That doesn't? Children? Terrorist! AND WHAT NOW?! SAME!" While his tone never shifted his volume would rise and fall. Grief, confusion, anxiety, anger. All bundled into one. Then tiredness. "I trust you, you're free to access the techniques that carry significant prowess behind them..I..I need to think about what to do...apparently some kids headed toward the leyline and now there are two airships compromised and apparently officers are wrapped up in a case of terrorism and a hostage situation..and apparently, I don't know clowns." He'd throw his hands in the air exhausted and at a loss. A feeling that everything is falling apart. Not unlike how a teacher feels when students have caused chaos in a freshly cleaned classroom.
"I..I need..time bloop." The Arashikage would begin moving. However, not towards his office but towards the bar counter where Trefles, currently looking the other direction, would find his bottle of Pina Blanc missing and only barely catching a glimpse of the Arashikage entering the elevator with it in hand. He'd bring his gloved hand to his lips as if to say 'oh thats not good.' before continuing the grind. The Arashikage would take a retreat to his private floor. What Nozomi was to do next was up to her. But having more than likely heard that there were kids at the leyline dockyard it would beg the question if said were 'her' kids.

From the other side of the slightly ajar door, bells rang the approach of a familiar individual. It wasn't long at all before a head of short, green hair drifted in like leaves on the wind. Red eyes gently smiled upon the eerily armored Arashikage.
Like her bells could be heard from the other side of the door, the voices from within could also be heard by those without. Garbled, dissonant speech of words that were familiar but felt so alien. The veteran of eldritch horrors had not yet figured out what was happening, but those few steps since hearing the voice was more than enough time for her to grasp the situation even if she didn't understand.
"Tosokurui Ashi Hojo-sama," Kagerou greeted with a polite bow. Honorifics were used and spoken in a calm voice, but the full name nonetheless also carried a tone similar to a mother's disapproval when speaking their child's full name. The eyes peered straight into the abyss-like eyes of the Arashikage and then at the tentacles that had come to life around him, trying to peel back the details of what was occurring here. The gentle smile was open and accepting, but it hid the brain behind it that worked at lightning speeds to piece together facts.
A scroll of some disturbing characters to the side. Finished glasses of drinks scattered around. Physique drastically changed. Tentacles speaking to each other. A completely inappropriate outfit for the setting worn. Powers going out of control. It was certainly an extreme case, but Kagerou had her first hypothesis. With a helpless sigh, she asked, "Lord Arashikage, are you perhaps drunk?". This would be the first time Kagerou has ever had to handle Toso quite this drunk, but she appeared so at ease with the situation that it would seem otherwise.
Like a rag doll did the Arashikage collapse on the floor as if in recognition that someone else was in the room but at the same time as if being caught by surprise. The toothy tendrils would then slither across the ground pulling the body they were attached to with it. Rising to meet Kagerou each tentacle taking a turn to speak after each sentence but each word creating a sensation that was like hearing something being submerged in a pool of water. What came out were distortions of the Arashikage's voice. This was always the case when they spoke but now it was far more prominent that the simple shifts in pitch from times they've been used for speech in the past. The ground trembled, as if Toso was the epicenter of something about to occur but then nothing happened. However, a wuick look out the window showed that the clouds were looking a bit higher that they were before implying that chances were the village had gone down again. It was incredibly difficult to deduce what with the cryptic language but what could be pieced together nouns aside was a nagging air of nihilism but also an air of danger. An air of danger equivalent to speaking to someone who was armed and ready but waiting for something like the subtlest movement to set them off. The lights in the room began to flicker as the electricity seemed to fade in and out and the strangest of occurrences would resonate within the clone. A sense of individuality. How that manifested itself within the clone would vary with the clone but to summarize it would be a feeling of "I am not a clone of Kagerou Kiritani - I am something else." whether that was it believing itself to be the real Kagerou Kiritani or something else again would be determinant of the clones feelings and thoughts.
There was a chakra in this room. This is something an individuals inate chakra sense would be capable of discerning...but as kagerou's clone felt earlier it was a chakra that carried a wrongness with it. Not inherently however, corrupt like a curse seals chakra, or natural like a sages chakra. The best way to describe such a chakra would be alien. Familiar, but unfamiliar. Something that would impose the question on a person "Is this really chakra?"
