Well i guess this is no longer the Toohoo RP guild and it's the Homestuck RP. SEE YA!

but honestly, I don't really mind the people who like it but a bunch of the fanbase of Homestuck take it far too serious and way too weird. Like the bad side of ponies. and now a rant:

When it comes to fandoms, I am not obsessive enough to be posting such ridiculous things at times (but for touhou, comedy is always nice) but I am not afraid of saying the following...
"I love the OST of SA"
"I played all the main bullet hell games at least once"
"My favorite character is Satori"
"I think ZUN should have a beer log to record all the various kinds of beer he drank for generations of newcomers to understand how he created the realm of Gensokyo" (That is a joke really. I would never be that serious)

When I see fans of such topics go overboard...i see the weirdest s**t. Not even porn related. It's like "This is my original character" syndrome or "I made this fanart of a character, give me 1 million views over this person who made something original and cooler that has only 10 views" and even...
"I only got into it because of the pictures"

The last one being towards Touhou. Believe it or not, i played a variety of Touhou songs especially this version of Magus Night from Fairy Wars and...no one even knew it.
Same can be said for the OST for Sky Arena and the obvious House sets of the various games (NO ONE EVEN KNEW ******** SAKUYA'S THEME FROM PHANTASMAGORIA!!!)
and yet i saw people dressed up as Mokou and Utoshi and believe it or not...a male Youmu that was good. I did my best to play the themes near them and they didn't even acknowledge the themes.
I am going off track from your talk to the right track just because of what I feel about fandoms.

Either KNOW what the source is/what it's about/at least KNOW it's a game (TOUHOU IS NOT A ******** ANIME! IT'S A BULLET HELL SHOOTER!)
Maybe that is why I go ballistic when people say Vocaloids are from an anime -_-
Look I am raging a bit so don't take this as if I am serious but rather trying to get the word out...

I don't hate fandoms as much as i hate ignorant fandoms.
"OMG HOMESTUCK!"
I ask "What's it about?"
"UHHHH....STUFF!"
/Facepalm

Only two people who were fans of Homestuck at the con (and they were even dressed as decent characters and not trolls) explained the series to me.
The short and easiest way I can explain it myself is..
"It's Dot Hack Sign but instead the MMO merged with the real world and there is time travel involved."

I keep going on and on but you see why I am not too fond of certain fandoms. As decent as some people are, many of them just get into it and not even try to do research. I got into Touhou after watching a video...but I was not sure of the source, so I decided to track it down and eventually i read up that there were games and they were the real focus (Around when UFO was announced I got some of the copies) and after I realized the fandom/jokes and why some people drew the characters in the game (Besides ZUN's skill in drawing).

It's mostly a story about a shrine maiden solving and preventing crisis in a land separated from the real world and they solve their battles with a Card/shooting game with rules built for both Youkai and Humans.

okay...i opened the gates. Hate on me if you must or tell me whatever it is. I AM READY!

Funny, I had so far accredited Homestuck to being a ******** that began with a Sims knockoff xD The idea of .hack never even crossed my mind.

But, I totally get where you're coming from. It's the same reason why I stay away from the Naruto, Bleach and Kingdom Hearts fandoms, even though I don't mind Bleach and I like the KH games - honestly, the KH series tell really good, emotional stories in my opinion. But people take it way too seriously. (*shiver* I remember when Naruto first came to the states.... oh god the fangirls. OH GOD--*flashbacks*) Same thing happened with Kingdom Hearts too, especially when the second game came out. All them bishies, yo. I also blame KH2 and Advent Children for ushering in this era of "darkness is kool lol".

From personal experience, I got into Touhou because of the pictures first. Cause there was SO DAMN MANY OF THEM. In fact, initially the amount of pictures I found was incredibly annoying to me, and I had tried to stay away from them as much as possible. Somehow though, I found myself researching it to finally figure what the hell Touhou was, which lead to my eventual perusal of youtube videos. I think my first two videos were Cirno's Math Class and the SDM Flandre attack because they were at the top of the "Touhou" search list. The music captivated me (even though I hate those two songs now), which lead me to research it further into the games, more music, pictures, etc. And here I am!

I don't take the Touhou series seriously (or any series, for that matter (Edit: well except Silent Hill. I WILL CUT A b***h)), but rather I value the friendships I've made from my being acquainted with >insert series here<.

But yeah, we're totally turning this into a Homestuck guild. *shot*

The reason why .hack is because the main character (I stopped reading a long time when I lost interest and didn't get into it) and his friends are invited to a "Beta" of the game (That weird house logo is the MMO) that they play only they somehow engage the end of the world and that leads to so much insane stuff is due to them releasing a sort of apocalypse. Sadly, the downfall of the series in my eyes is Not enough is REALLY explained and even one of the people said that the story is not fully explained until like the 7th chapter which I never read.

Honestly, the concept is at least far better than...Sword Art Online...
And this is coming from someone who made This idea.
In the end, if you have to explain something that is explained later in the story instead of something at the start then you really have to be adamant to read through it all. In fact, my initial thought when I heard of Spice and Wolf was "Oh god not another fantasy romance with an animal..." But after reading it and reading through the Manga version (They all vary BTW) it was more focused on just a travel story. Sure there was a relation between Holo and Lawrence but it's not just instant...in fact, Lawrence doubts the harvest god at first due to being focused on money. It gives you a better insight over such problems like Econemy, the exchange rates, people ******** you over with deals and religion. Especially Pagan gods. It's not historical fantasy but it does really open your eyes that you want to read onward and see what else happens. where as homestuck for my initially...

"Dude! read this!"
*Checks link*
"What's it about?" (me after 30 pages)
"Just keep reading!"
"No really...What is it about? All i got was it's this kid's birthday and something is going on but I don't quite understand...."
"You will know if you keep reading."
"I don't want to read it if I have no clear indication on what is going on. It's more confusing than Excel Saga!"

I think I watched .hack (the first series) when it aired on Cartoon Network forever ago, but not very much. I had never gotten into the series, but I definitely see how you put the two together now!

Hm... never heard of Spice and Wolf, but it does sound interesting. I like stories that have a big focus on the world as much as it does the story that's taking place. I might have to look into that.

Yeah, I was getting those same vibes from Homestuck, to be honest. Poorly drawn, the narrative didn't make much sense and was erratic, plus the inclusion of random non-pixelated real objects thrown in (like the harlequin objects in the kid's home) was a real turn off for me. But, like I mentioned in an earlier post, the smaller details and concepts had a certain charm to me, like the fact characters had "inventories" and "collected items" despite originally being in the real world, because I remember pretending those things when I was a kid. So that small charm was enough to keep me entertained and interested, and now, the music and animations scattered about are enough to keep me going too.

Also, if you want confusing then watch FLCL, which is also my most favorite anime ever mrgreen

I will make a stand...FLCL is overrated and not really confusing.
It actually has a story believe it or not.
I watched it and it was just alright. Not amazing and the manga was meh to me.
Then again...I read/watch some of the more non-100% common manga a lot. Like Suzuka, Tiger and Bunny (anime actually in this case) Chibi Vampire (ANIME ADAPT SUCKS) Gunslinger Girl, Ace Attourney, and more.

When it comes down to it, if the story is not fully fleshed out at the start or at least build the situation then it's not catching. For instantce...on the back of the Suzuka Manga #1
"Yamato is ready for a fresh start. So when his aunt invites him to stay rent-free in her big city boardinghouse in hustling, bustling tokyo, Yamato jumps at the chance. (Already explains the first character and the setting)
There's just one Teensy-weensy catch: it's an all-girl housing complex and spa! (This is one issue that is common in most manga series but this is not really like Love Hina when you read on)
Things get even more nerve-racking when Yamato meets his neighbor Suzuka, a beautiful track and field star. (Second character and female protag of the story already explained) She's not just the cutuest girl Yamato's ever met, she's also the coolest, the smartest, and the most intimidating. (This is more or less just getting an understanding of what the girl is like compared to the main protag)
Can an ordinary guy like Yamato ever hope to win over a girl like Suzuka? (And THAT is the basic story told in a simple question...which would make someone want to read and find out. It's never the result but the journey. Since we possibly know he could end up with her we want to read HOW!)"
In that one summary, I already knew what the story would be like.

I am not comparing an online comic to manga but rather say that if the first few pages do not paint a good enough picture to get invested or at least give you the basis of the story, then why should you care so much? Why stick around for 7 chapters long just to see the ACTUAL story? And don't say skip them...that is basically like spoiling the end of TV series for someone.
I had no real feelings towards the homestuck characters, I didn't care about what was happening nor did I feel like it was a story that was suppose to be epic or cool...Even webcomics like Brawl in the Family do FAR better at telling a story than Homestuck (And I love the Cocoon Academy arc really. Even if it was based on characters that already existed, it was a lot more creative.)

I know i am ranting still and saying the same thing about this and that, but i can't help it. The internet is free to say this. I just wanted to get across that I do not hate Homestuck, I just hate how people assume it's good when I don't have any clear idea what it's truly about until SOMEONE TOLD ME!
And they even admitted that it's never explained until a lot later in the chapters which is stupid. I mean...it starts off like this!

"A young man stands in his bedroom. It just so happens that today, the 13th of April, is this young man's birthday. Though it was thirteen years ago he was given life, it is only today he will be given a name!

What will the name of this young man be?"

Uhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh......what?
Not invested, not caring and not even telling me anything other than it's his birthday today. What is the other bullshit? I may be harsh already but a first impression of this is "People like this?"
PostPosted: Mon Jul 15, 2013 10:50 am

...

You don't like foreplay very much, do you? *shot*

Seriously though, you aren't supposed to know everything a series has to offer within the first few minutes of indulging, or else what's the point? Part of the fun is the build up and accumulation of ideas as the story unfolds!

That'd be like saying 'I like such-and-such movie because I read all about it on TV Tropes" or something. Don't get me wrong, I like a deep story that's told well as much as the next guy, but personally I'd find it very off putting to have so much information about a movie/game/etc. shoved down your throat right at the start.

Edit: HOWEVER, I am in no way defending Homestuck's incredibly long and drawn out chapters, or any other series'. 'cause that's some s**t xD

Well i mean i don't know EVERYTHING about a series...
I meant everything as in "it's all i need to know what the story will be like" or to get invested.
Of course I need to read to learn more about the story but the summary or at least a good plot will be all that I need to know in order to get hooked is all.

Youkai.exe has stopped working. No solution. Self-destruction imminent.

Hmm... I'd share my opinions in this chat, but, you know, to each their own, so you don't have to like what we talk about~
Free thought and all, you know~?

I guess, one other thing I'd like to add; don't let the fandoms ruin something too much for you, because if you let the fandoms ruin something for you then you're in for a bad time *shot for meme reference*
