Vajra B. Hairava http://www.guidetojapanese.org/ That is a good start. Well, thanks, but I meant like... is it just the same to buy software and books rather than take college courses? To become fluent in Japanese, should one live and work in a Japanese environment? I don't think a Web site will teach all of what I need to know.

Courses are okay, self study is okay, together is best.
I myself am pretty much entirely self taught, with just books and the internet. I studied it for a year or so on my own, and eventually the time came when I had the opportunity to take an actual class, I was able to test out and skip over all of them an move to the last level, because I had managed to learn so much just on my own. Now of course it depends on the class, but for me, self study worked waaaaay better than an actual class. Basically, the only thing the class was good for was to have a teacher available to ask questions. Besides that, bleh.
And its cheaper too, If you don't want to shell out the thousands on a official course. I've probably spent only maybe $100 on books for Japanese in the last few years, and I've gotten much better results that any class did for me, and for much cheaper. Not to mention the piles of free good stuff lying around on the internet. And besides that, it depends on your motivation to learn it. If you try, really, you can progress faster than you would think.
But duh, the best way to learn Japanese is to live in Japan. But for someone like me without the cash for that at this point in time, the way I've been doing it has worked really well.

Well that actually makes me feel a lot better (because hardly any of the colleges I'm currently looking at offer Japanese courses ><). Oh, and thank for that link; it's excellent. Also, I have another question: when you hand-write characters, I know that the order of strokes matter, but how perfect do the characters actually need to be? I mean, does close cut it?

Start with the Genki text. It's really good. 3nodding
Together is definately best. I read through things ery quickly and pretty much remember it with only looking it up once or sometimes twice and once I get to it in class (once I start my classes), it will really reinforce it. 3nodding

Takahashi_Natsumi Ah, I see. Despite what Japanese teachers will say, it really doesn't matter what your stroke order is, as long as it is readable. I certainly don't use the right stroke order. Ah, Genki, that book was decent. Textbooks are good because they are helpful for having vocabulary integrated into stuff. But you could get similar results with that website and a $5 dictionary. That website there, that is like, all the grammar. 90% of the grammar that is ever used is contained in that. Quite nifty.

If it means anything, Genki was the textbook my summer Japanese class used when I was in Tokyo as an exchange student. It was just for the summer, you see, so instead of enrolling us in a normal school, a bunch of volunteers set up a language school for the exchange students in the area. It's very strange to be tutored by old Japanese ladies.
I'd have preferred the normal school...

Hm, I see. I'll look into this book. Thanks for the tips. ^^
Also, is "Genki text" the full title?

I was just giving you a link to that textbook. I personally don't recommend any textbook, I don't like them.

Does anyone know where I can download a good program for showing Japanese characters? [I use mozilla.] What are you if you butter your bagel on the left side?
