"That's excellent," Lin smiled widely.

At this rate he might past Miyuki when she was his age, he seemed to grasp it pretty quickly.

"Well, since you're here, I do need to talk to you,"
Lin made her way over to Andarien and sat down on his other side.

"I talked to Iorlas about her offer, and she gave me this. She said if you drink this, languages for you should come much... much easier, but it has to be while it is still warm."

Andarien eyed the vial of the thick red liquid, and he looked up at Lin doubtfully. "What is it?" he asked, his tone rather suspicious.

He hadn't really seen blood, having not been subject to much injury, nor seeing it in others; so despite his suspicions, he really couldn't say for sure that he was looking at blood: still, he had a feeling it wasn't going to be something very yummy.

Lin didn't miss that look, she had been young once too. Despite the fact it might not seem like there had been foods back home she was suspicious of herself. One had to be when the food was bigger than yourself at times.

"This is going to be one of those cases of drink first and ask later," Lin told him wryly.

Andarien blinked at Lin. "That doesn't sound good," he said, his suspicions increasing.

Still, if it would help him, he would try it. He held out one hand for the vial and waited for Lin to uncork it for him.

Uncorking the vial, she handed it to him while saying, "I was your age too once. I know better than to tell you first."

Not that she had anything as nasty as plain blood, but sometimes you didn't want to know you were eating cow's stomach or pig's ears.

That just made it sound worse to Andarien, but he took the vial anyways. He wanted so very badly to learn other languages that he was willing to take a chance.

He looked at the liquid for only a brief moment before he closed his eyes tightly and put the vial to his lips. Then he tilted it upwards and drank it down as quickly as he could.

As soon as the liquid his his tongue, his gag reflex started working, and he had to cough once to keep from choking on it. Eventually he got it down, though, and he wiped his mouth with the back of his hand, wincing as he handed the vial back to Lin.

"I think maybe it's better if you don't tell me what that was," he frowned. "I don't think I want to know after all."

Lin smiled a bit and ruffled Andarien's hair as she took back the vial. She could imagine how unpleasant that was, it was a good thing she didn't tell him first what learning new languages would involve.

"Would you like something to get rid of the taste?"
she asked.

Andarien nodded, running his tongue over his teeth to try to scrape the taste off of it. He stood up and rubbed his hand over his lips again, and then he let out another soft cough.

"Please," he said, eyes wide and begging as he looked up at Lin.

"Come," she motioned towards the kitchen, "Let's see if we can find you fruit or at least something to drink."

At this point she was even willing to ask for wine for him if it would help. She didn't know what blood tasted like but she knew the coppery smell of it, it wasn't pleasant so she would imagine to taste it was really unpleasant.

Andarien took her hand and walked alongside her to the kitchen. Laer was already preparing dinner, and the kitchen smelled delicious - like cake and pie and other good things. But poor Andarien still had that awful taste in his mouth, and he couldn't appreciate the aromas around him.

"Oh dear," Laer murmured, smiling ruefully when she saw the look on Andarien's face. "Looks as if someone got into something he shouldn't have."

Andarien didn't even clue in that she had spoken in the Common Tongue. "Mama gave me something yucky to drink," he replied in the same language, frowning and sticking his tongue out at her. "She said it was something that would help me with learning languages."

"Well... what do you know... it works already," Lin replied back in Common Tongue with an almost cheeky grin.

At least he got something out of it, because honestly he looked quite unhappy with the taste.

"We need something to help him get rid of the taste," Lin told Laer, "Because frankly he nearly gagged on it, not that I blame him."

Andarien blinked at Lin. "What do you mean, it works already?" he asked. "How can you tell?"

The language was coming to him so naturally that he still couldn't tell that it wasn't the language he had grown up with.

Laer laughed at him. "Because we are not speaking Common Elvish," she winked at him, heading towards a cupboard. "And you aren't, either."

Andarien was astonished. "I'm not?!"

"Nope, you haven't since Laer greeted us in Common Tongue," Lin chuckled.

Honestly, Andarien's face was just priceless.

"Though it shows how natural the gift is."

"Natural?" Andarien repeated curiously. He accepted a cookie and a glass of grape juice from Laer and headed towards the table to sit down and enjoy them.

"Why do you say natural?" he asked, taking a sip of his juice before starting on the cookie.

"Because you don't realize it's happening, you don't have to think about it," Lin explained, "And it also means you won't forget if you don't use it."

She followed him to the table and took a seat.

"I know it might not seem like it, but your father and I, and even Miyuki, we have to work to maintain our working knowledge of the languages we do know," Lin explained, "If we don't use them for a long time, we start to make mistakes, or it might take us longer to say what we want to say, or we might not have the words for it."
