It was that last move that saved the creature, and likely doomed Nocturne's priestess....
Arms wide in a gesture of surrender or at least cease-fire... She twisted her wrist, the light blade slicing very lightly.. no pun intended... across the demon's chest until she was standing breast to breast with the thing, her blade the only thing between them.
"What gives? I thought we were going all out... I mean you already gave you big evil speech an all." She was panting, the effort of holding so much magic when she was already so tired making her head start to ache.
Raven had lived a good thousand years, at least from what she knew... there was really no way to tell how long Munin had walked the world in this body before she fell into the trap that left the former demi-goddess with more than one spirit inhabiting her avatar. So facing a being that was thousands of years old, wasn't really new, it wasn't pleasant at all... but it wasn't scary either.
"You going to offer to bed me now?" Rae asked in a slightly snide tone. "You wouldn't believe how many bad guys pull that after beating me up a bit."

She twisted her wrist, the light blade slicing very lightly.. no pun intended... across the demon's chest until she was standing breast to breast with the thing, her blade the only thing between them. " What gives? I thought we were goi..."That was all she got out. Foolish, foolish fledgling. So young....so naive. Perfectly happy to shoot quips and offer mercy to something that was corruption itself. Not corrupted. Corruption. This thing spoiled everything it touched, sucking up souls by the hundreds if possible to satiate it's bottomless pit of a stomach. The blade raked across the demon's hide, spilling pitch ichor which splattered across Raven's chest as it was released from the supposedly dry, flaky skin...and just as the attacked ended, the creature would strike. It's maw would suddenly flip open, wider then should be possible, the upper jaw seeming to unhinge and fling back as spittle arced out from within the black hole of it's throat as the tongue that sang words shot forth with the speed of a striking snake, aiming for the soft flesh of her neck, the tip of the tongue, which was bulbed like a tuber, split open up the middle to reveal many many rows of razor-sharp, hollow tubes. The thing, if it struck, would sink into her neck and the mottle gray of the tongue would grow dark as the creature sucked her blood with an unbelievable pressure - and with her blood, her memories. It's claws, at the same time as the tounge striking her soft, delicate neck, would reach down and grasp at her shoulders, looking to dig into them deeply, the jagged nails sinking past the burning marks and deep into her flesh to lock her in place so it could feed on her blood and her memories and gain the knowledge of the strange darkness that she could call upon, the power that governed it, and the skills she used to manage it...

Damn... It was all she had time for before the creature struck and she felt the strike before the world went truly black. For both of them!
Black as Night, Black as Pitch. Darker than the darkest Witch...
The first memory that the soul sucker would absorb would be of a dark hotel room, the window was open, allowing the cool night air to drift in around them. The woman lay on the couch, her hair spilled out around her. At the other end of the couch there sat a boy, a child with violet eyes and a smile that was more than just slightly wicked as he looked at the sleeping woman.
There was a knife sticking out of the child's chest, and from it seeped a stream of night black blood that had soaked his robes so that he he was clothed in the Night itself.
The woman stirred and woke, stretching languidly before she sat up and Hono'o Raven got her first look at Nocturne....
And then the soul sucker would find something very strange to be happening, for the woman froze and the little boy would turn to look at the intruder to this memory. "You do not belong here... in point of fact, I don't think you should be touching what belongs to me at all!"

" You do not belong here... in point of fact, I don't think you should be touching what belongs to me at all!" Hono'o's blood, now flowing through the creature's veins, chilled under its languid skin, even as her warmth pumped hot through it's body. The hunger was upon it now, but the child....the child with the knife in it's chest.... It was not of this world. The creature knew this now. And for the first time in a thousand millennium, it felt dread pierce it's black heart, for here was the unknown, and to a creature so foul and old and knowledgeable of the darkness of this world, here was a darkness completely alien to it. The hunger was upon it, but not to the point where it had consumed it's mind completely. Those thousand millennium had made the physical hunger less poignant then the hunger for the soul...the smell of a fresh soul held more sway over the physical pangs on any occasion... ...And yet it found itself unable to pull away. Already the fledgling's blood was flowing through it's own veins, her own strength, waxed as it was, filling it with power - and what a cavalcade of power. A kaleidescope of power, almost one of every element and even combinations....even power that could not be defined by elements or holiness...it was a heady brew, the creature was completely caught unaware by it, and as such, was utterly captivated by it... So it watched this child in the fledglings memory with a mix of fear and definance, like a wolf with it's prey in it's jaws, seeing a human stumble across it's kill. Waiting to see what would happen. Whether this thing in her memory had the power to decimate a creature of blackness from nothing but the past itself...

The room went dark, and changed to what was obviously a different time as Raven moved through the living room area, dropping clothes on the plush carpet as she casualy disrobed.
The boy had moved from his place on the couch, following a tall dark haired man who was blushing furiously as he followed the woman towards the couch, a paint brush in one hand, although the boy was a ghostly figure in this memory.
"Are you still here?" The boy looked towards the creature with a scowl, stamping one foot, and pointing a ring bedecked finger at the monster, a shot of black lightning arcing from his finger. "I do not allow interlopers into my temple!"
For this was a temple indeed.. Raven had built her dark little god a special place in her mind, going over all his words, all the time she had spent with him, and reliving it all when she was in need of comfort on a spiritual level. This was a temple to Nocturne, a holy place... despite the fact that most people would not call Nocturne a god strictly aligned with 'good' he was still a god, and in a temple dedicated to him Nocturne had more than enough sway to bloister his priestess's dwindling energy...
There was no way to know if this creature had fed on his own kind before, or if he had even fed on a fledgling like Hono'o who did not need to draw blood to drain energy... but likely he did not realize that with his own contact he had given Raven the opportunity to drain him in return!
Now Ravey, I don't know why you are being such a picky eater, but I insist that you remove this creature at once! I know that you are worried about the extra bits of personality and memory that you tend to pick up with your meal, so in this case I think you will just have to let me filter for you this time... so go ahead and feed, I will keep you from feeling bad about it later. Remember, I'm depending on you! Rae could almost feel the light brush of Nocturne's lips on her forehead, and with that ghostly kiss came enough power to give her limbs the necessary rush of blood to have her free hand snap out and latch onto the demon's exposed neck, her nails digging into his corrupt flesh as she gritted her teeth an followed her orders, draining the false doctor in return.

Pain.
That was what this sensation was.
It had been so long.
The process had been broken. It had gotten her in it's thrall, and she had shattered it. This power contained within her....it was too much for the creature. The power of her memory....the power of the being within the memory....it could not be measured by any Gaian standards. It needed to survive. Something to boost it's power, it's strength. For the first time in eons, this ancient creature feared for it's life. It felt desperation, even as it's tonuge attempted to suck deeper, harder, trying to drain her even as she drew his very life force into herself. With a long, slow sucking sound, the thing drew it's claws out of Hono'o's shoulders, it's razor-sharp talons glistening with her slick blood as they pulled free. It had very, very little time. It could feel it's power waning already, the darkness surrounding them transitioning from an ink to a cloudy grey. Pulling it's shaking left arm back, it swiped it forward, raking it's talons across her chest and stomach, shredding her clothes and splitting the skin beneath - as well as freeing the box, containing it's precious cargo, from it's confines. And it would tumble through the air.
Spilling open in the process.
Exposing the pearl to the elements.
It's other hand craned open, it's wizened palm awaiting the touch of the Horcrux. All it needed was a touch, and the process would begin....
....And as the pearl touched it's palm, it knew the thrill of victory.
With the power contained within this soul, it could crush the fledgling easily. Bat the power of her master's memory aside with a flick of it's wrist. It could live a millenia without having to feed, feeling no hunger....to be freed of such a debilitating need. Universal process or not... But it was not to be. For as the pearl grazed his palm, touching the skin, there was a flash of light, an arc of static which was burnt in their eyes, the sound of an electrical snap off flesh like the cane on the skin of a schoolchild, and the pearl was repelled back up, rebounding like a basketball to hit Hono'o in the chin before dropping down the front of her shredded top to become wedged safely in the holiest of holy places. And then the creature would know pure horror, as it's power waned to almost nothing...

Her voice was a horse croak, her razor shark nails digging into the creature's neck, it's blood oozing out around her fingers as her lips pulled back in a viscous grin. " You will not touch what is MINE!" the last word was a growl as she pulled her other hand back just enough that she could angle the blade of light enough to slide it into the demon's chest, ramming it in until her hand was flat against his chest.

HonoRaven " I already told you..." Her voice was a horse croak, her razor shark nails digging into the creature's neck, it's blood oozing out around her fingers as her lips pulled back in a viscous grin. " You will not touch what is MINE!" the last word was a growl as she pulled her other hand back just enough that she could angle the blade of light enough to slide it into the demon's chest, ramming it in until her hand was flat against his chest. It's blood, thick and viscous like oil, welled around her nails as her fingers dug deep into it's flesh, her own talons having penetrated it's throat, filling it with the greasy substance, causing it to gasp like a fish, each rattled draw sending more gunk down to it's decrepit lungs. It's arms fell to it's sides, the strength to fight now lost as it's eyes rolled back, a throttled gargle coming from that bottomless maw. It was already dead, but a thing such as this never went easily - it went slow, it's body clawing for life even though it's mind understood utterly that it had lost. So when she yanked her fingers free from it's throat, splattering the bedside beside them with the mix of it's and her blood which was courseing still through it's veins, and jammed her blade into it's chest to penetrate it's rapidly beating heart, lancing the disgusting thing like one would lance a boil, allowing it to burst within the chest to release it's foul contents, the creature shook once, stiffened like it had grasped a live wire, before finally falling still. The darkness that had surrounded them had dissipated right after it had realised it had lost. The coma ward surrounded them, it's stark fluroescent lighting crashing down upon them, and exposing the creature that had attacked Hono'o for what it was. Words, however, would never do it justice. It's tounge was still stuck in her neck, but it no longer sucked at her blood. The hollow tubes left it wedged in there, but there was no pressure left. It dangled from there like some sort of umibical tube, limp and useless, leading down to a horror that was so malformed it was hard now to tell where it had come from in the first place. Blood, black and red like her hair, oozed from the wounds in it's neck and chest, pooling on the floor beneath the corpse. Its smell would now hit her - it was a rank smell, vile, like vinegar and trench-foot mixed together. It was, however, very dead. Her prize was safe, still wedged in it's landing place quite innocently. But one would wonder on the way she had killed it....it's power, elderitch and ancient, now coursing through her veins, filling her to the brim with, whilst not as potent as Nocturne's gift or as lasting as Tomorrow's love, was still a heady brew of power... It's words might still ring in her head. "Come to me, childe....face your future. Overcome it, and know you are damned...be defeated, and understand lament."
...So which had it been?

" I am so not cleaning this up!" Violet eyes flashed from out of every shadow in the ward for an instant, the Lord of Nightmares putting his little foot down on the matter. Good girl, now be a dear and find your Black dog a new body so that he is not such a tempting target. He is supposed to protect you, not the other way around, so hurry up before I pick out a body for him. The voice was soft, but very firm and Rae couldn't help but to shiver at the hint of a threat in that voice. " Thank you for your help... I'll do my very best." sweatdrop

The thought was quelled from her mind before it could even take form. What would be would be. So spoke the Lord of Nightmares.
Now, however, what would she do? Deep wounds to her shoulders and chest, her sweater and blouse torn open to reveal much more then they should, drained of blood...not to mention now being as dirty as sin, splattered with her own and it's blood.
The creature's thrall had taken them to another dimension. No sound had escaped from it. There were no cameras in this room, and aside from Klara, nobody else knew she'd come in here. Hono'o had every opportunity to use her rejuvenated power to bounce back to the condo, draw a long bath, and recuperate...
...But then, every second counted. Who knew when she would stumble across another soulless body, alive and empty and able to accept John's soul?
Perhaps there was a better way. Instead of stumbling around, trying to find a body by sheer chance, perhaps there was a way to find a body, to track one down, make it more obvious. Maybe there was a charm she could buy, or an incantation she could learn, that could make this more easy then just running around hoping she would luck upon the right body...

Rae staggered over to the wall, slowly sliding down until she was sitting, her head hanging down as the adrenalin rush started to wear off and she was left shivering. She was brimming with energy, her wounds were already knitting themselves together, but she was scared at how close this had been... for herself and for John... too close.
Her clothes were torn, and not as easy to fix as her skin, but her confidence was torn much worse.... What would have happened if that thing had not roused Nocturne's anger and prodded her god to lending her a hand.
There had to be a better way to do this, a better way to find a container for John's soul... a better way than simply looking through hospitals for a usable body to snatch... and then there was Maxi.
She had hurt him, as had John... both of them by accident, but they had hurt him nonetheless. Would he really be willing to help her when she brought the body to him, or would he still look at her with those pain filled eyes that would forever haunt her when she looked at Johnathan.
"I need a vacation..." sweatdrop She laughed softly to herself, wondering what the hell to do next.

With a sigh Rae checked that the pearl was snug in her cleavage, grateful yet again that she had a great bra, it had not been shredded with her shirt...She had more than enough energy now to put a simple illusion on herself to cover her ruined clothes.
Rae stood, managing to find the face doctor's clipboard, she headed out to the Nurses station, dropping off the clipboard with its important notes before she headed home for the last few hours of the night... tomorrow, she would start looking for someone to help her find a new body for John!

Rae stood, managing to find the face doctor's clipboard, she headed out to the Nurses station, dropping off the clipboard with its important notes before she headed home for the last few hours of the night... tomorrow, she would start looking for someone to help her find a new body for John! Of course, it was all well and good to think that....but the actual progress itself would be grueling indeed. It wasn't like there was a section in the yellow pages labelled 'empty vessels'. There wasn't a place in the back of the newpapers reading 'soulless body, twenty three years old, only smoked three cigerettes a day, selling soon!'. And if she took an ad out, well...that would get her a quick ride in the back of a cop car to a psyche ward where they'd talk to her about 'letting go.' No. She'd have to be subtle about it. She'd have to talk to people who knew people. Nasty people. Dangerous people. People who wouldn't care less about a soulless body, as long as they got payment. These people were all over the place, you just needed to look for them....and ask the right questions. After all, any shaman or witch-woman could literally smell a cop or a fed from a mile away...but that didn't mean they didn't have to be cautious. After all, the cops were becoming increasingly proficient at developing their own sigils and charms for their own nefarious - but good for the common people - deeds... And that was another avenue. Hono'o had contacts all over the place....and with John dead, she had access to John's contacts too. More specifically, the contacts he had in the DCPD, as well as his badge and police ID he'd gotten mocked up way back when. She knew first hand just how well it had served them in the past...no doubt it would serve her too. Imagine the possibilities, getting access to a police lock-up with all the charms she could wish for....surely the cops wouldn't miss one or two? But first things first. She needed to figure out what she wanted. That took research. Was the bird-brain capable of such a thing?
