"Oh! Oh!" Ivy squealed excitedly, turning to River. "Do it on the ground! On the sand!" She danced from one foot to the other, her eyes sparkling brightly.
River looked from Daemon to Ivy and back to Daemon. It was only now that she remembered that she was supposed to ask Shiro about her gift that had manifested way back when they had been in Chansond'eau. But so much had happened between then and now that she had simply forgotten - forgotten even that she had the strange ability.
She knelt in the sand and opened her hand, holding it palm-upward, instead of down like Ivy wanted. Daemon wanted to see the blue, not what the blue did to the sand.
It was her first time using the magic consciously, and when she willed it to appear, the blue sparks trickled down her entire arm before collecting in a ball in her palm. It sparked and crackled with power, and even though Ivy and Amalirahc weren't touching either the sparks or River, Ivy's skin was prickling, and Amalirahc's hair was starting to stand on end.

"Electricity," Daemon murmured looking carefully at it, but keeping his distance.
He was pretty sure it wouldn't zap River because obviously that was her affinity, but he couldn't promise that to anyone else.
"Or... as it occurs in nature, lightening, I get what happened now," Daemon nodded, "Thank you River, you might want to be careful with that. I don't think it'll affect you, elements that the elves summon themselves rarely do, but electricity can really mess up a person, or hurt them badly depending on the amps and voltage..."
Lin finished buttoning up her shirt and looked at River, wondering when did River start doing that. She had seen River's first gift, but not this one. At least the girl's parents wouldn't have to worry about her getting hurt, you'd have to be a real idiot to attack someone who could wield lightening like that.

River blinked at Daemon. She understood the bit about lightning, and it made sense, but as for the rest ... it went way over her head.
"Huh?"
Amalirahc stared at Daemon. "You're like ... like Kaito!" he exclaimed, staring. "You know everything, but you don't say it to make it make sense!"
Ivy was still trying to coax River to make more glass. "Do it in the sand!" she urged her anxiously. "In the sand!"
River glared at Ivy, but she didn't say anything.

Lin couldn't help but giggle at Amalirahc despite the seriousness of the whole thing. Electricity was perhaps more dangerous than fire, if only because of it's unpredictable nature on the body.
"Well the two are pretty much cut from the same cloth really..."
Daemon gave his granddaughter a look before looking to Ivy and River, "Ivy, if River doesn't want to make more glass, don't make her. I know that it makes glass, that is because lightning is very hot, and so it melts the sand, which is the process you use to make glass."
He paused and wondered how to explain the rest of it, well he would assume she was wielding lightening, so he could assume that the amp-age on her lightening was strong enough to kill someone no matter the voltage, and really those were Gaian concepts.
"I'll skip over the stuff about volts and amps because there's no way here to measure it and it's rare you'll need to know that part," he shook his head, "The point is, lightning is potentially dangerous to the body and it's unpredictable."

River nodded slowly at Daemon's words, taking them in. "Well ... I already knew that it's dangerous," she told him. "When we were in Chansond'eau, we got in a fight ... and I kind of zapped one of the boys. His hair was on end and his hands were a bit black and he screamed something awful ..."
Which was why this was the first time she'd used this magic on purpose: because it had scared her so badly when it had manifested.

Daemon winced, yes, he could see that one happening, "Lightening is hot, hence the glass..."
He motioned at the glass dome.
"So that isn't surprising but..." he paused and thought about it, "Lightening is not just dangerous because it burns and hurts. Our bodies give off electricity as well, but it is so small compared to lightening you don't notice it, really minuscule. This electricity is what allows our brain to send signals to the rest of our body. Any time we move, breath, think... our brain is telling the rest of our body in the form of very, very small electric shocks which travels down our nerves which allows us to move and feel and so forth. When you introduce lightening into the body, at best it'll just mess up our ability to move, but it interferes with our own body's signals, at worse it has the power to stop the heart from beating."
He paused for a moment to let it sink in.
"Lightening is very unpredictable, like it won't strike in the same place twice normally in nature, it won't always affect people the same way. An amount that might be fine on one person, might be deadly to another."
As much as he hated to admit it, the children were lucky it didn't turn out worse than it had with that boy.

"I knew it was dangerous," River said quietly, a bit impatiently, feeling as though she was in trouble for something that she hadn't done. "That's why I haven't used it since I found out I could. When we were in that fight, that's when it manifested for the first time, and it was an accident. Now in the storm, that was an accident, too. And it didn't hit Ivy or Amalirahc. And I wasn't planning on making a habit of using it on people."
Why was it that she was constantly being put on a guilt trip for something she hadn't done, especially something she hadn't done on purpose? She didn't like it. Not one bit.

"I know," Daemon replied softly, "But I wanted you to know all that it encompasses, because accidents do happen, like you said, it was an accident, but when an accident happens you need to know what happened, so you can tell someone and get the proper help."
He understood she didn't like being lectured on it (no one did) and she hadn't done anything bad, but it wasn't enough to simply say it was dangerous.
"I'm also saying that this, because of one other quality of lightening. For all it has the power to stop the heart, it also has the power to potentially start it as well. Which hopefully you'll never have to try on the fly, but so you know. The more you know about your ability, the more you know what can and can't be done."
He looked up at the sky thoughtfully.
"You know... in Gaia, we use electricity to power our homes, and make our mechanical things work. I believe... Shiro uses it for that portal computer of his..."
"You mean his tablet?" Lin supplied.
Daemon smiled innocently, "Yes, tablet, I've been meaning to ask him about that."

It was food for thought for River, and she remained silent now as she thought about what Daemon had said.
"I'm going to go find Mama and Papa," Ivy announced, losing interest in the subject as it started to go over her head. "Come on, 'Malirahc, let's find your parents too!" She grabbed his hand, dragging him after her as she started running.
As the two ran off, River looked at Daemon and Lin thoughtfully. "So ... it's not a bad thing to have a gift like this?" she asked softly, her eyes dark and serious.

"Not a bad thing at all, it's really no different than wielding fire, water, earth or wind. It is, just another aspect of nature, beautiful, amazing, but strong and deadly. Most don't think about that for wind, water and earth, but as you noticed with the sandstorm... wind under the right conditions can make the environment deadly, water drowns people and when the earth shakes it can bring down a building. It's that duality in nature."
He coughed when he realized he was starting to sound like his old magic teachers. Honestly, it was a wonder why he didn't teach instead of becoming a relic hunter (it would have been safer). Looking at River, he noted how serious she was.
"Getting back on topic, my recommendation is to talk to Shiro. I know the basics, but after several centuries my mind is a bit fuzzy on the subject as a whole. While lightening affects are not predictable, what path it will take is. Lightening is always looking for the easiest way to disperse in the ground, but there's a whole list of materials that will help lightening reach there better than others, and some won't help it at all. Knowing how it behaves can allow you to judge, should... heaven forbid you and those around you are attacked, how to use your ability to protect those around you safely. Electricity is a good deterrent to getting closer."
He said this wryly as if remembering something from his past, and considering he had been friends with Long (and still was), there were probably stories behind that.

River nodded. "We were attacked in the Human Southland when we first started our trip ... but I couldn't use this magic then. I wonder if it might have been better for us if I could have ... the only reason we were saved was because Amalirahc's family showed up and Kelirahc's dragon scared them off."
She blushed. "I was so scared I didn't even use the magic I could use then."
And suddenly she remembered that the magical bow and arrow she could create and use were the same colour as the lightning she summoned.
"I wonder ..." she murmured, her brow furrowing thoughtfully.

Daemon knew that look, he got that look sometimes when he was thinking about magical theory. Which according to Yume didn't go over well sometimes, but it wasn't like he had the ability to do anything with those theories.
"What are you thinking?" he asked, curious as to what she was wondering.

River looked at Daemon. "For several years now," she began slowly, "I've been able to shoot arrows without either a bow or an arrow in hand. I always just thought I was shooting magic. But ... I just realized that when I do that, it's the same colour as the lightning I make. Or electricity, whatever you call it. So now I'm wondering ... are the arrows I make ... lightning?"
She hesitated, wondering how she could find out safely.

"Does it leave burn marks where you shoot?" Daemon asked.
Since he didn't know and had never seen River shoot arrows before, though Lin had and it wasn't something she had ever considered before.

"I don't know," River admitted. "It's been a long time since I've done shooting of any kind. I'd never thought to look. But ... you said that lightning melts sand and makes it into glass, right?"
She was looking out into the desert. "What if I were to shoot into a pile of sand or something? If it's lightning, or electricity, the sand would turn to glass, right? And if it doesn't, then it's not lightning."
In theory it sounded right to her, but she didn't know if there were restrictions on what type of lightning, or what strength of lightning, might cause the amazing transformation.
