Nyl noticed the ijutsu, but still didn't say anything.
"Upset?" She smiled fractionally. "'Course not. Just pensive."

His brow furrowed, "Not sad, are you?" He threw his thumb over his shoulder, "Could I, maybe, get some help with cleaning the fountain..? Like you said, people drink out of it!" He rubbed his head clumsily.

"Sure." She jumped down the stairs and sat on the edge of the fountain. After a moment of thought, she touched the water with her fingertips. A stream of it wound itself out of the fountain and landed in the grass; the rest of the water appeared to start boiling.

Seph watched her and nodded, crossing his arms. He licked his thumb and rubbed off a bit more blood, careful to avoid getting it back in the fountain. He sat on the grass and watched her work, wiggling his nose.
"Thanks, Nyl!"

The water stopped bubbling, and Nyl stood, drying her hands on the edge of her shirt.
"Welcome. I suppose I'd be a silly Mizu or Ho student if I couldn't make water boil." She sat on the ground too, leaning up against the fountain and staring up at the sky.
"How'd you bleed in the fountain, Seph?" The question sounded innocent enough.

He looked back at her, "My nose was broken, and I wasn't thinking when I came back into the clearing." He paused and looked at the clear water of the fountain. "Some bandits or thieves were messing with a defensive post out in the forest, and I got a little careless getting rid of them."

"Been a while since we've had bandits. Next time, let me in on the fun."
Vacations were wonderful, but they had a tendency to also be non-actiony.

He grinned at her and nodded, giving a wink. "You bet! What bothers me is, they were pretty close to disabling it. After those things, it's up to our own intuition to pick up on intruders." He looked up at the sky, then rolled onto his back and sprung forward into a crouch. He frowned, still thinking about the unusually intelligent bandits.

"Intuition works, a lot of the time."
It would seem like an abrupt change of subject, but in Nyl's mind, it was a smooth transition.
"So. This...this reaction-switching technique of yours."

A light bulb went off in his head and he gave a 'eureka!' look. "Yes!" He stood up quickly, wobbled only slightly at the sudden change in height, then smiled. He took her bringing up the subject to mean she was ready to learn it. "When I thought of this, I imagined Rai. It seemed obvious enough, to mess with the electrical currents running through the brain, but after thinking on it for a while, I discovered that it would take far more concentration and chakra to use Rai."
He took a few steps away. "Then I thought of Ijutsu, and how repairing chakra channels was a very common thing." He turned to look at her, happy he had a chance to finally explain this technique.

She listened quietly, not saying anything for a few minutes afterward.
"...It sounds...well, ordinarily I'd say unique, but...it's intriguing. How do you know what you're doing isn't going to kill a person?"

"Because all you're doing is detouring the chakra." He held out his arm and poked his elbow. "From our ijutsu training, we already know that for each appendage, every joint that can move, there is a focused point of chakra. By creating a new link at my elbow, it will change the chakra flow needed to move that point to some point farther down the flowline." He attempted to bring his forearm up to his chest, and instead his thumb folded across his palm.
"The more crossroads at a certain point, the more the person will be affected." He withdrew his own detour, restoring his elbow's movement. "That's the only difference between using Rai and Ijutsu. If you attack the center of the person's chakra with my technique, then nearly the entire body will be altered randomly. I still haven't developed a way to decide what I want a point to be changed to."

"Randomly...but consistently? The signals won't change continuously once they're scrambled?"

He shook his head. "Once the detours are established, they're locked in place until I drop the jutsu or they wear away. Depending on the strength of the user and how much preparation is put into it, that could be anywhere from ten minutes to two days. I got three and a half days on my arm when I was practicing. Want to give it a try?"
