"Thanks," Lin murmured as she ushered Andarien to join his father, "Grandfather? Will you be coming?"

Daemon nodded as he rose from the seat he had taken during the storm. Even though it was strange to be out of the sword, he wanted to give it a try.

"Let's go, at the very least we'll be an extra set of hands," he told her motioning her to follow him out the door.

He knew the plantation well, even if he was seeing it with a different set of eyes. The human slipped out, with his angel granddaughter following close behind.

Outside, the landscape had changed. Instead of green grass beneath the trees, there was only the pale brown of sun-scorched sand that covered everything, a hand-width's deep. The paint had been blasted off the north and west sides of the house as well as the other buildings. The trees had lost quite a few of their leaves and were now looking quite thin.

From where Lin and Daemon were, a few people were in sight: Nadya was heading towards the bridge that led to the vineyard; Beren was kneeling with Serenity on the path (or at least where the path should have been) towards the barns along with Alassëa and Aethos; and though from the front door of the house the orchard was not in sight, voices could be heard from that direction.

"That way," Daemon pointed.

The way he pointed was in the same direction as where the voices were coming from so that was as good a direction as any. As they made their way to where there were other people, she couldn't help but be amazed at how different it looked.

Not to mention the amount of repairs that were probably needed after a storm like that.

Around the corner of the blighted house and past the carriage house was the orchard. The orchard was a mess. Atop the sand were leaves that had been stripped from the trees, as well as apples - though there were still some leaves and apples left on the trees as well.

Beneath the trees was a strange dome-like structure, transparent, but not smooth, and through the odd dome, three people could be seen: the olive-skinned River, the bronzed Ivy, and the black Amalirahc.

"Hey! Get us out of here!" River shouted, her voice muted by the barrier. She pressed her hands against it. "We can't get out!"

Amalirahc and Ivy didn't seem to be in a hurry. They seemed to be enjoying themselves, laughing at something unknown.

Lin bent over and stared at the dome before knocking it twice. It was pretty solid, but she was sure it wasn't... magic.

"What is it?" she looked over at her grandfather.

Daemon hummed and looked to the ground where the dome was connected, it obviously was stuck to the ground otherwise the children wouldn't have pushed it up by now. He figured it was one of the gifts, seeing as all three were at that age where accidents did happen.

"Hey, maybe we can dig under," Amalirahc's voice echoed inside the strange dome. He knelt and began to pull sand away from the edge of it.

River tried pushing up in the center of it. "It's too heavy," she told Lin and Daemon. "And it's getting hotter in here ..." She wiped some sweat from her brow.

Daemon frowned as he put his hand on the dome and felt it, the fact they were getting hot clued him in. Of course, he thought as he let his hand travel down the dome.

"It's glass... I'm pretty sure" he looked to Lin, "And it's acting like a greenhouse, that I know for sure. I think we can break it but..."

"That might be dangerous for both sides," Lin murmured.

And if it was glass, she didn't know how thick it was, or if she could break it by herself... she eyed the children in the glass. Being elves the children were taller than her, was there enough room that if she retracted her wings she could fit in there and teleport each of them out?

"OW!" Amalirahc yelped and pulled his hand out of the sand. Flecks of blood hit the ground, and he held his hand to his body. "That's sharp!"

"Then you better not dig anymore," Ivy said, her tone worried. She turned to look at Daemon through the dome. "And if the edges are sharp then even if we got other people here they won't be able to lift it," she said anxiously.

"Maybe if you found something to use as a lever," River suggested, more level-headed than the other two, and thinking more than her grandparents would have expected of her. "Like a branch or something, maybe that will help lift it so we can get out ..."

"Actually that would be far more doable," Daemon murmured.

Fortunately it wasn't like there were lacking in large branches. A storm like the one that had passed would push to the limits even the oldest of trees. It was incredible anything survived out here with the sandstorms that came through.

A large broken branch had just what they needed, and even though Daemon was the one who spotted it and pointed out it, Lin was the one who carried it back. Forcing the branch into the ground next to the dome and then wedging it under. It was just finding where under was....

The edges of the dome only went a few inches beneath the sand, but the edges were very sharp, as evidenced by the gash on Amalirahc's hand.

River wiped her eyes, and then her brow again. "Just hurry, please," she begged them. "It's too-too hot in here!"

They didn't find time to find something to rest the branch on to give it even more leverage but it was their hope they could wiggle the dome free enough for the kids to lift the top off.

Holding onto the end of the branch, once it was firmly in place, Lin nodded to her grandfather who also took his place near the end of the branch.

"One, two... three!"

The two adults pushed down and from the cracking noise as the dome broke off from the ground the, dome lifted. Of course, once the dome was loose the branch fell the ground, as the dome was no longer stuck enough to the ground to keep the branch up.

"It should be loose enough to lift up if you push the top up," Daemon told the children, "But becareful there are probably still shards on the ground."

River looked at the top of the dome. It was above her head, and she could just reach it with the palm of her hands. Amalirahc would barely be able to touch it with his fingertips, and Ivy ... well, she was younger than Amalirahc, and did not have the blood of some of the Firstborn. She couldn't reach at all.

"It'll still be too heavy for me," River told Daemon as she fanned herself. "Maybe if you find Grandpapa and Grandmama, they're both very strong, they can help lift."

"Maybe you could do that thing again that you did before when the sandstorm came," Ivy suggested brightly to River. "Maybe that will help!"

"Or maybe it will zap us all," River frowned at the girl.

Daemon knew they could lift it, it was just an issue of the sharp glass. He heard a rustle beside him and realized Lin was taking off her shirt. Granted that left her in her bra, but at this point she didn't want to take any longer. She had grown up around greenhouses and they were hot in the moderate weather of her home, she hated to think how hot it was getting in the desert. She folded it over several times and bent down to use her shirt to pick up the edge of the dome.

Realizing what his granddaughter was doing, Daemon did the same. Though he wasn't as strong as Lin, between the both of them they should be able to at least push it off and lift it off.

"Again?" Lin looked over at Daemon.

Daemon nodded, "One, two... three!"

They both heaved though it felt like Lin was carrying most of the weight to Daemon, they pulled up and pushed it over, letting the glass dome use the rest of it's momentum to flip over.

Daemon winced, the cloth protected them mostly from the glass, but not all of it as it left indents but didn't quite break the skin.

"That was glass," he muttered, "Something hot was involved in protecting them."

The moment the dome tipped, all three of the children gasped for air.

"Thank you!" River gasped, shivering as the much cooler air washed over her sweaty skin.

"That was weird!" Ivy exclaimed, only slightly bothered by the intense heat. "The storm came and we started running for shelter but we weren't going to make it and then it hit us and then River made this weird blue whoosh thing and bam! We were in there!"

She was more excited about it than anything else; but then, she was too young to realize how dangerous it could have been for the three of them to be stuck in there for very long.

Amalirahc looked only slightly more serious than Ivy. "It was kind of like when River fried that kid in Chansond'eau," he grinned.

Daemon, since he was a guy and a shirtless guy wasn't a brother, went over and looked at the dome carefully. He noted the burnt edges and how it wasn't perfectly melted and or smooth.

"River, I know you're probably still recovering from that, but it is possible I can see some of that blue that Ivy was talking about?" he asked.

His mind already coming up with what happened but he wanted to confirm.

In the mean time, Lin was putting her shirt back on carefully. She was probably going to have to change when she got back and go over it. She also noted how it wasn't perfect and was worried it might have gotten glass shards in it.
