Two minutes down, and he had matched his previous best for this training session. Hopefully he would manage to go farther than this, and not break down right here like he had before. Such a fate would not be unheard of from him, since he already felt like he had managed to gain a reputation as someone who couldn't go all the way. If there was nothing else, he wanted to break that idea about him first. Not only was it dishonorable for him, it was also demeaning. For someone who was expected to be the pinnacle of what was possible, to be viewed as someone who always missed the mark by just a bit was an awful fate. Hopefully his legs didn't give out here so he could get his morale up a bit.

Three minutes of holding himself against the wall in this squatting position made him happy that he was now setting a record for this session, but it also reminded him that his legs were that much more sore. They felt like someone was taking a hot knife to the muscles on his legs, and it went without saying that it was completely unpleasant. If anything, he wanted to drop so he could get a rest, but that idea was completely against his ideology. He would hold this position until his legs gave out from exhaustion. He would be expected to do nothing less with some of the other jutsus, and he wasn't sure if that was expected or not. Surely he would impress people if he could go all the way with this personal challenge of his?

Four minutes went by and Kiyoshi was blown away that he was able to last this long. He never would have guessed that he would have been able to hold it for more than two minutes, and now he had done double that. For now the sky was the limit, and he didn't want to hit his limit anytime soon. After all, only so much could be done before he went to class, and the students would no doubt be prepared while he was completely behind. He might have been weaker, smaller, and unprepared, but he would force himself to have a stronger will than any of them. Weak in body and mind he might have been, but weak in spirit he would not be. And if the teachings of the priests were of any use, they said a strong spirit was worth the body and mind of a hundred men.

It appeared that four minutes had been his limit for now. He had doubled his previous time of two minutes, so obviously this was an improvement. He got back up off the floor, making sure to position himself correctly. He may have failed that time, but he was still doing well. He felt like he only had half of what he had had when he had started this exercise, so he knew he couldn't continue too much longer. Even so, this would one day become quite easy for him, and he hadn't even started weapons training or jutsu training. Surely that would come soon when he went to class to get his body, mind, and soul whipped into shape so that the village could wield him like a kunai against its enemies. Such was the duty of a ninja.

Well it appeared that he could do better the longer he was doing it. Realistically he only wanted to continue for three more minutes before he would feel like he had accomplished something worth doing. Anything further than that would be pushing it, and pushing himself too far would be bad for him in the long run. Plus, he felt that he was doing rather well, even though he was already sore. But pushing through the pain was required if one planned to be a ninja. It wasn't like he had been stabbed or sliced or hacked into or anything. Therefore, it was obvious that he could continue on virtue alone, regardless of how tired he was feeling. Being tired wasn't going to stop him unless he passed out anyway.

It appeared that he was more tired than he had anticipated. He dropped to the ground, breathing hard as he tried to get up the strength to continue training. After a minute he was up again, pushing himself up and getting back in position. He was so close to succeeding that he couldn't bear to fail now. After all, why should he when he had the heart of a champion inside of him? All the priests agreed that he was stronger of will than they had anticipated, and he felt like someone who deserved to be stronger than he was. Even so, he had to work for it, and that meant he couldn't quit now just because he was a tiny bit tired and feeling slightly weaker than normal. It just wasn't acceptable.

The sweat on the stone floor had made it slippery and hard to get a grip on. He fell on the ground, feeling like he was ready to pass out. But he wouldn't, because he couldn't right now. He had come too far to do such a thing, so he had to continue. Instead of cleaning up the sweat and breaking his stride, he simply moved to a different section of wall and started again. Surely with a dry section of wall at his back and a rough and dry section of floor under his feet he would have the necessary traction to keep himself up even if his muscles were overly weak from previous successes. Even so, he was feeling rather goo, better than he had been feeling in a long time. Perhaps later he would go out and begin working on some other form of training to keep his stamina up.

Only two minutes remained in his training. He wanted nothing more than to be done, if only so he didn't pass out cold. Passing out would be quite annoying, if only because it would mean that he couldn't continue training. Seeing that the day had just begun, and he had an entire day left to continue training under the academy's watchful eyes. He knew that he would probably experience all the horrors of training... but he didn't care. He would lay on hot coals until his body burned away if it got him closer to becoming a ninja in service to the fire nation. Then again, that sounded like good training to him... It would be a good way to increase his will, or maybe his constitution. Regardless it would have to wait until he was done doing this.

It appeared he was far more tired than he expected. He fell to the ground, feeling like he was going to die with how tired he was. It was tempting to take a step back and rest for a bit, but he refused to do so. If he failed again he would have to, but he refused to take a rest unless he absolutely needed to. That was just how he did things in his life, however foolish he was in doing so. Then again he was beyond weak for his age, and as a tool of Surtur he was pretty dull. He lacked the sharp edge that he needed to be of any use to his religion or the ninja community at large. In this wartime nation they needed strong, obedient, and nearly suicidal warriors to defeat their enemies. Kiyoshi figured that he had two out of three of those requirements taken care of, but he would only be useful if he accomplished all three.

He finally collapsed, unable to continue for now. He figured he'd take five minutes to catch his breath and rest before continuing. He didn't think that he'd do too well, but he had to try. After all, there was nothing to do, and he couldn't give up now. Giving up would be akin to signing his own death certificate, and considering it was probably already made up in triplicate he refused to do anything other than prove that they were unnecessary. Even though he was only ten, he had a lot to live up to, and living up to anything at that young age was basically impossible. Kiyoshi didn't know the meaning of the word.

As he sat there on the floor, trying to get his muscles to begin working again, he felt like looking around the room and taking in the sights. The braziers were lit like always, making the room rather hot. It was tough to work with them, but then again Surtur was a fire god. If you couldn't stand the heat, you might as well have been worshiping Thyrm. Then again how anyone worshiped a god of ice was beyond his understanding. Ice was solid, unmoving. It was anything but dynamic, and that was the problem. Fire consumed, but it also granted new life. That was why it would ultimately triumph.

That idea got him thinking about fire itself and what he wanted to do as a ninja. If he was going to really be a sword of Surtur, he would have to learn how to use weapons as well. But should he just learn how to use one weapon or multiple weapons? Or perhaps he should learn to use every weapon possible to become a truly terrifying master of everything? It was certainly possible to attain, but swordsmanship would have to come first and foremost. It was, after all, in the title assigned to the priests of his temple. You couldn't not fulfill that part of it with a name like that.

Now it was time to stop lying around on the floor. He stood up, wondering if he could complete the remaining two minutes of his training without needing another rest. He hoped that one day he would be less weak in the future, but that was looking like a far cry at this point. He didn't think his chances were good, and that was because he was pretty tired as it was. But even so he had to try, because if he quit he would regret it forever. It was time to start working again.

Kiyoshi positioned himself back on the wall, and tried his best to block out all the thoughts and all the pain he was in right now. Sure it wasn't as bad as some of the pain he would no doubt be in later, and it was undoubtedly not the worst pain he had ever been in, but it was still bad enough to make him doubt his own strength. Regardless he had to be confident and continue to push onward, because he had come far too far to cut and run now. His legs may have ached, and he may have been sweating buckets in the heat, but he would be able to handle it. If he couldn't handle this there was no way he would be able to move onto something more difficult. Something like learning how to throw fire with jutsus.

Even after his rest, Kiyoshi was having a really hard time getting back into the swing of things. He quickly found himself on the floor, feeling like he was completely out of gas. It was like the rest hadn't done anything at all for him. He was still tired, and still having trouble doing squats for some reason. Had he truly reached his limit? Had he truly found something that he couldn't do no matter how strong his will was? His mind and soul said no, even if his body said yes. He had to finish this, he couldn't quit now even if his legs broke under him like twigs. Well, if they did that he'd have to head to the hospital, but for now he had to continue until that happened. Surely he'd be able to hang on for two more minutes....
