Toby didn't want to admit that Luca might be right.
"Didn't you hear? We're racing the federal employees," Lori said, patting Rosie on the shoulder and climbing into the front seat. He smiled to Luca. Luca knew better. Hopefully so did Cody or the poor kid might pee himself. Cody was older than exactly two people going to the beach, and one wasn't exactly a people, as she had four legs and the brain of a 5-year-old child.
Toby drove out in front of Luca and Lori to lead, just in case Red had never been to the lake before. Dari turned to Cody and smiled. He didn't seem overwhelmed. What a trooper. He leaned in to kiss him on the cheekbone.
"Are you going to go swimming with me?"

Luca was smirking. "I'll let him win, this time," he said. He leaned over to kiss Lori's cheek, and then began to follow Toby's lead to the lake.
"Of course. I haven't been swimming since I was a kid. I'm looking forward to challenging to to a splash fight." Cody smiled at Dari. "We'll have fun."

"You packed a suit?" Dari asked. He'd mentioned it before when Maia had given him the low-down but he hadn't actually witnessed it go into any bags. As they began down the road the wind began to rush by their ears, and were Dari not used to the constant sound it might have been deafening. It was the same effect as sitting inside a car for him. He noted Luca's ears were showing but didn't glance any further his way to point them out. They were all human today, even though not a single one of them but Cody was.
"I haven't gone swimming--" since I became human "--in a long time!"
Technically it wasn't a lie.

"Of course," Cody smiled. He couldn't hear the rest of what Dari said, due to the wind, but leaned close and took his hand. He was really looking forward to spending the day with his boyfriend.

Dari took Cody's hand and smiled back. He must have not been able to hear him, and so Dari just smiled.
In a few moments, Rosie as grown curious. She turned her neck as best she could in her belt and snuffled Cody's shoulder with a cold, wet nose.

"Hi puppy!" Cody turned slightly to pet Rosie. He was fond of dogs, already had Bern, though he was seldom around them. "Are you excited to go to the beach, then?"

Rosie gave Cody a good licking. Yes, he was okay. He got to stay. Her nub tail wagged against the seats. She knew "excited" and "go to," so it was a good thing, right?!

The lake was only about an hour's drive. Once they'd arrived and parked, Cody opened the door for Dari to exit, and grinned at him. "This place is beautiful," He marveled. What a treat! "Are you ready to swim, love?"

Dari laughed when Cody reached over him and slid out of the car, standing by the door as it it might somehow swing closed and hurt his beloved. Lori got out an handed the bag to Luca so he could unstrap Rosie and get her leashed up. Apparently Cody liked dogs well enough. That was good.
Toby at the head of the convoy stretched and then started helping Maia carry things to the beach.
"It is, isn't it?" Dari asked Cody as he finally closed the door behind him, "It's early enough that the beach isn't crawling with tourists either."

Luca took the bag with the watermelon, looking over towards the water. "Its peaceful today," He observed, and looked to smile at Lori. "We practically have the beach to ourselves."
"Where should we set up?" Maia asked, carrying the picnic basket. She looked around. "Maybe somewhere--Hm. Here?"
"Do you come here often?" Cody asked.

"Mmhm," Lori agreed, reached out to pull Luca to his side and kiss his temple. He then released him and went for his hand, walking with Rosie while the dog sniffed the rocks, the bushes, the sand, the ants.
"This looks good," Toby said, and helped Maia set out the blanket. Lori came soon after but found himself not of much use so just stood waiting and smiling.
Dari lingered a bit behind the group, but not for any conscious worry. Cody was new to them. He probably didn't want to be thrown into the middle of it all.
Dari nodded. "More than most, I think. My brother has a boat we take out from time to time."

Luca smiled, swaying their hands as they walked. While he did seem to admire the water, it also seemed as if he was nervous.
"Do you think lunch first or swimming first?" Maia asked.
"Oh, really?" Cody smiled. "I've never actually been here, its nice. Your friends seem nice," He added, gesturing towards Lori and Luca.

"Yeah, they're good guys," Dari responded. "Are you alright?" They could stay as far away from his family as Cody wanted to. It was normal to be nervous. They were only six dates in.
"Uh. Swimming first," Toby said, "While it's still warm. Then we won't be suffering when the sun goes down."
"Good plan," Lori agreed.

"I'm good," Cody assured Dari with a smile. As long as they were together, it was fine! There was nothing scary about being around a group of secret agents. It was probably the safest place to be.
Maia nodded. Right. She always seemed to forget how easily human forms became chilled.
"I think I'll watch," Luca said.

Toby was actually wearing his suit now under his clothes with a change in the bag for later and so began to strip down right there. He looked to Luca only for a moment and then turned back to Maia. "It shouldn't be too cold, right?"
Lori turned to Luca then and smiled. "Don't be silly." Was he self-conscious about his body? Or his ears? Then he spoke with a softer voice: "You can stay by me."
Dari motioned for Cody to follow him to the changing room and showers up the beach a ways to change. Buying a swimsuit had been a little weird. What was even sought-after these days? What was all about those little spandex ones anyway?
