[ I grumbled to myself as I rose to my feet. There was no use in it- the tunnels were too dangerous. The phantom himself barely bothered me. The tunnels, however, were too old to search, so it was futile to even look for him...
I sighed and turned, preparing to head home, when I suddenly froze as my name was again called. The wind had picked up now, and the old place began to moan and creak.
This time, though...this time the call sounded more solid. It echoed across the swamp eerily, but that didn't bother me- it was just another mystery to solve now.
I turned, twitching my ears as the echo faded. What could amplify a voice to that extent? The tone of it wasn't yelling, per say, but it had been loud enough to echo through everything...
Birds flew into the air, letting out a warning call. So it wasn't my imagination if others could hear it, but still...where had it come from?]

"Now that's not fair," I huffed, prodding through the reeds.[ I was relying on my nose because my folded ears left me with merely adequate hearing.] "If you have something to say to me you should just say it. Beating around the bush and hiding in holes...how rude..." I muttered, sniffing here and there.
It was almost impossible to get a solid scent trail, but I was known for my stubbornness.
"Dunno if you're a stranger, mister, but this is no place for a creature to live. It's really dangerous, you know. Those tunnels could collapse if you go in em. And it's mighty lonely, to boot. Why don't you go somewhere where there are cats? At least then you wouldn't be stalking around like some plant or something.
"Creatures shouldn't pretend to be plants,"
I said wisely, sticking my nose in the air in a vain attempt to sniff the trees. "We were born with blood and mouths. Show yourself! If you want to talk to me so bad, howling at me from nowhere ain't gonna work very well."
I paused, tilting my head slightly as I stared at the darkness, and meowed slowly, "How do you know my name anyhow? It's not like it's a popular name or anything. Though it might be soon, what with the burden I got..."

[I sighed and sniffed around some more, tail sticking up.] "I'll find you soon, too," I muttered to myself. "My nose has gotten me outta trouble more times than you've eaten a mouse!"

Suddenly I sat straighter, and exclaimed, "Wait, are you a talking tree?", staring with wide eyes at the tree before me. [This tree smelled a lot like the scent! Maybe that explained it- all the trees round here had that scent. So was the phantom a magical talking tree...?]

"My oh my, I never thought I'd meet a talking tree. Well, how now! Nice to meet you, Tree, you already know my name. What's yours?"

[My eyes glinted mischeviously. Maybe I did believe this tree could talk, maybe not. Heck, I fell in love with a demon- anything could be possible.]

FEAR CAN TURN TO LOVE
YOU'LL LEARN TO SEE TO FIND THE MAN BEHIND THE MONSTER

▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬ ▬▬▬▬▬▬ ▬▬▬ ▬▬▬

[The mysterious black shadow closed his mouth after his eerie yowl, peering at the Nightclan she-cat with mismatched eyes from the gaps of the tree root. Every time, whenever he pulled off that trick, any cat who had dared venture here had ran off yowling and hissing in fear. Not this she-cat though. Rather than being scared, she was curious and eager to learn more. The lips of the Phantom's lips curled up ever so slightly, a discreet and frightening smile playing at his lips. She was an interesting cat so to say, why not play around with her more?

He quickly darted through one of the more stable underground tunnels, after all only he knew which tunnels were safe and which ones weren't. His head popped up from a hole in the ground, located behind a big rock. From there, he listened without a sound as Puresun started to speak to him. Or at least, what she thought was him, as she was still speaking to the tree. "Why don't you go somewhere where there are cats? At least then you wouldn't be stalking around like some plant or something." His eyes turned cold her words, mismatched eyes hardening like pieces of flint. He shouldn't have expected anything more of Nightclan. Shunned and threatened to be killed by his birth clan, forced to live away and call this hollow his home. He had nothing to do with clan cats, they were the ones who had hounded him out. Even if Puresun and him were raised by the same mother, he hardly expected Lavenderstar to say anything to her clan. Him, the "adopted son", a cat cursed from birth to haunt these hollows as a ghostly figure. It would taint and soil Nightclan's prideful name, no doubt about that.

"Wait, are you a talking tree?" Caught completely off guard, the Phantom blinked blankly, not knowing how to respond. Of all things...the Phantom of Dead Cat's Hollow, a talking tree? Maybe he had overestimated Puresun's intelligence a little. He would test her one more time to see if she would run away, but even if she stayed to investigate, the Phantom won't show his face yet. He had not talked or even shown his face to another cat for more than ten moons, and he wasn't planning to do so any time soon.]
"I'm here..."
His voice was only a quiet rasp behind the big rock, in the same mysterious and husky voice as before. His head immediately slipped back into the hole, and when Puresun comes to investigate, he would already be long gone down another maze of tunnels - it would be suicide to follow him. He popped out of the tunnels in a spot hidden by a dense growth reeds. For a heartbeat, the sunlight shone onto the white half of his face before he let the shadows engulf and hide him.] Puresun...you're an interesting one indeed.

(AAAND this is the part when he goes "I am your angel of music...come to me, angel of music..." xd )

[I looked around. The tree was silent, for the most part...maybe my little joke didn't amuse the stranger. I shrugged- it was worth a shot.
Making him laugh would've helped give away his position anyhow...

The hair on my pelt stood on end as the voice called from behind me. I spun around, eyes wide with surprise.]

"No tree can do that," I whispered triumphantly, eyes locking on the rock the voice emanated from.
[I dashed over to it, my short legs gliding with ease through the muddy soil, and leapt over the rock, immediately thrusting my head over the tip of it to try and catch a glimpse of him. But I only caught a glimmer of movement flying into the rock!
I hopped down onto the ground to discover the hole he had disappeared into. I could hear a fading scuffling as he maneuvered through the tunnels.]
"You must be joking," I huffed worriedly, then yowled into the tunnel, "If you run around in those you could get hurt!"

[The last word echoed under the ground, and I narrowed my eyes, following the echo with my ears. I heard it slightly rise in volume several tail-lengths away from me- the exits! The tunnels were not deep in the ground, making it easy to hear the vibrations...I failed to realize it also meant walking above them could be treacherous.
There were two exits. Time to choose one...
I locked my eyes onto the general direction it had come from and lowered my head back towards the hole.]
"You okay?" I called cautiously into it.
[Suddenly, I broke into a run, following the echo as fast as I could as I kept my eyes locked on the exit point. I skidded to a stop at a smushed opening in the reeds around the hole, but there was nobody there. Wrong exit!
I looked back, and sighed with dismay. There were boulders and rocks everywhere! There was no finding where I had been before...but there were only two exits, right?
I cautiously put my face into the hole, sniffing deeply with my nose. No, he hadn't used this one recently...but I let out another yowl, sending yet another vibration under the ground. I pinpointed the two exits again, and, with satisfaction, recognized the general direction I had just run from.
So it was in the other direction- slightly to the right.
I released another yowl, eyes narrowed, and dashed off in that direction.]
"I have you now!" I hissed excitedly, tail sticking straight up in triumph.

[Suddenly, as I was scrambling towards the vibration, the ground collapsed below me, sucking me in like a fish.

My yowl of triumph turned into a shriek as I fell into the earth. I slammed into something- a wall of some sort- and ricocheted in the other direction. I landed on a tunnel floor, but as I did so that tunnel also collapsed inward, and this time I felt a sharp fear in my stomach as I dropped steeply towards something deeper in the earth, and finally landed in a pool of water with a giant splash.]

***********

[I moaned, temporarily stunned. My vision was blurred by a red haze, and my head throbbed with pain. Slowly, the pain ebbed away, and I rose to my feet, blinking in the dim light.
My eyes slowly followed the beams of light that were shining above my head. Very, very far above my head. It was twisted...I had fallen into a tunnel that had collapsed into a cavern of some sorts!
I squinted into the darkness and gasped.
This place-! There was an underwater lake here!
No...as my eyes adjusted, the cavern walls loomed out of the darkness. It was more of an underground pool that trickled down from the walls- no waves (except for the ripples I created). Just water...
My pelt was soaked. Water streamed off of my coat almost endlessly. I had instinctively run ashore, since the pool was shallow.

My panting died down as I stared in awe around me. Dead Cat's Hollow was more than just dangerous old dens. It was a network of dangerous old dens- and caves!
I turned around and had to hold back another shriek. The head of a cat rested against the wall. No- a whole skeleton, hidden under dirt and rocks.
I shuddered. Definitely Dead Cat's Hollow...
I raised my head again with an unhappy sigh, twitching my ears. Getting out of here was going to be one of the toughest things I've ever done.

I sat down again at the edge of the lake, staring into the pool with solemnity. Time to get serious. A playful game of hide-and-seek with a phantom-creature had turned into a nightmare.
I needed to compose myself, and then figure out how to get out of here.
And Shadowpaw! All alone in the forest! What was I thinking, letting him wander around looking for me? I had kept an eye on him, vaguely knowing where he was by scent, but had completely forgotten about him now...I prayed he could scent me and find the hole I had made to go get help.
Or, better yet, never found me and return safely home to explain it. That way nobody else would risk their lives trying to find me! But they would send a search party...hopefully in vain...

Then a thought struck me- what if I had still been pregnant when I had made that fall?

I let out a cry of agony, whimpering softly with a twisted face. All my kittens would have been crushed. I breathed heavily again. No...this was no time to work myself up.
I took deep breaths, calming down, then stood on my feet, turning starting to scuttle towards a tunnel I could see. Time to get moving.
But I let out another cry of pain, this time in shock. Moving so abrubtly was very bad. I felt something warm trickle down the side of my face, and I smelled blood. I had hit my head harder than I thought...and I got a terrible headache from moving!

I plopped back down on the floor, inspecting my wounds. I had a twisted foot- not sprained, but still painful- and cuts all over. Plus my head spinned whenever I moved.
So I was stuck here for now. At least I had water...but how long could I last?
I sighed and lapped up some of the cool water of the pond, surprised at how clear it was. This was an underground pool, after all. It was probably pure, untainted by external disturbance...
Pure...
I wondered if perhaps I could contact StarClan from here. Maybe this was a type of Moonpool! I dipped my nose in the water hopefully, closing my eyes, but after a few moments realized it was useless.
Even if this was like a moonpool, StarClan had nothing to say to me right now.
That's what I deserve...I abandoned my apprentice!

I looked around with a sad expression. I could smell that musky smell, faintly but surely. So the phantom had been here too! How strange.
What're you doing, running around all alone in these tunnels? I thought with remorse. You must weigh nothing but a feather to walk safely here...but why are you so alone...?
I shifted a bit as I rested on my side. Where did this phantom dude come from anyway? And was he a cat, a dog, or...what? Why was he able to walk through tunnels easily, and live on NightClan land without them knowing? Who was he?

What was going on here?!]

(( Why are her posts so looong all of a suddennnnn OvO" ))

FEAR CAN TURN TO LOVE
YOU'LL LEARN TO SEE TO FIND THE MAN BEHIND THE MONSTER

▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬ ▬▬▬▬▬▬ ▬▬▬ ▬▬▬

(I was going to write there's an underground lake in this post lol xd )

[The Phantom only watched in amusement as Puresun yowled into a tunnel, quite far away from where he actually was. Him, get hurt? She had no idea who she was talking about. The Hollow's Ghost, hurt in his own lair? What a joke. She really should start to worry more about herself rather than his safety...and anyhow, the game has gone on long enough, and it was time for her to return to her clan, he didn't want a horde of Nightclan cats rushing here and barging into his home looking for their lost little kitten. He decided to leave her alone, and if he stopped messing around with her head maybe she would give up and leave. Climbing out of his hiding spot, the Phantom trotted to one of the trees and dived into the tunnel beneath its roots. It was the only tree that provided a safe entrance to his lair underground, then again every tree looked the same - only he would know which entrance was safe.

He had not gone far when suddenly the pattering of pawsteps could be felt from above...that mouse-brained she-cat! The ground above was unstable, any creature living around these parts would know. However she was from Nightclan, and he couldn't blame her for not knowing. As if in answer to his thoughts, sunlight suddenly streamed down in front of him - as well as a brown and white shape crashing through. The ground above had collapsed, and as she fell the tunnel he was using caved in as well, rendering it unusable. He darted forwards and watched as she fell further forwards, until she was out of his sight...then after what seemed like an eternity, a faint splash could be heard. For a few heartbeats, the Phantom's eyes widened in horror. No, she couldn't have fallen into the lake...she couldn't! Across the lake was the entrance to his den, and not a single creature knows its existence. True, there was a possibility that she could have drowned...though if she drowned, his secret would be safe. Right?

Still, he found himself backtracking and turning into another tunnel in the maze. No other creature would know their way in this maze apart from the rabbits who made it, and the rabbits weren't about to go around telling anyone where the Phantom lived. He made no attempt to mask his footsteps, not that he cared if the she-cat heard him or not. Heck, she might as well be dead for all he cared. Before long, his paws slowed and came to a stop at the fork of one of the tunnels. Without hesitating, the Phantom turned and darted into one of them. One of them would lead to the cavern with the lake, the other would lead to a deep pit and anyone who ventured there would fall to their deaths. The tunnel began to widen and the ground beneath him began to harden as he made his way forwards, passing by some skeletons of cats and other various creatures who never made it back alive. He wasn't bothered by them one bit - they merely served as decoration to his lair.

The tunnel finally connected with the underground cavern, and the Phantom stepped onto the rocky ground gracefully. It was almost pitch black here, but his eyes adjusted easily to the darkness. Not very far away, he could see Puresun's limp shape lying by the lake, and he could smell a faint scent of blood. Was she...dead? For a heartbeat a strange emotion crossed his heart - was it...fear? The feeling quickly passed, as he saw the small furry shape move. He pressed himself against the side of the tunnel, unwilling to show himself yet willing himself to check if she was alright. Why did he care anyway? What was this feeling? Was it what others called "compassion"? He didn't know, as he had never been shown any kind of emotion apart from fear and hatred.

After what seemed like an eternity, he finally mustered up the courage to step forwards, walking towards Puresun until he was about four fox-lengths away from her, in plain sight. He sat down and curled his tail neatly over his paws, sitting tall and majestic.]
"You should not have come, Puresun. The Phantom would be better off known as a legend, instead of trying to find out the truth."
[He chose his words carefully, after all it was his first time directly speaking to another cat in more than ten moons. His voice almost had an angelic quality to it, seductive and melodic. After he spoke, he glanced back to the way he had come from. It was the only way out...how was she going to get back to her clan in her wounded state?]

[ My voice hitched in my throat as the devil himself spoke behind me.

I sighed, not turning to look at him, and glared at the lake silently.]
"You were the one luring me around," I said tartly, brooding to myself. "If you didn't want this to happen, maybe you shouldn't have said anything in the first place..."
[I looked up at the hole in the wall with wide eyes, tail-tip twitching.]
"I sure did fall a long way," I observed. "These tunnels were larger than I expected..."
[I shook my pelt gingerly, wincing as my head immediately began to throb with white-hot pain again. My breathing grew tight as I endured it, eyes squeezed shut. As the crippling pain faded, I began to breath normally again, letting out a soft sigh.
The lake glinted calmly in the exposed light, a scene of calmness disrupted by outside intrusion. This was the Phantom's home, and I had fallen straight into it by accident.
Even though my curiosity burned to know what he looked like, I kept my head turned away from him. If he wanted to remain a legend, then so be it- I wouldn't look upon his form so that his appearance would remain unknown to me.
I just thought it was a good thing to do. I'd fallen into the guy's home, after all, and seeing what he looks like would just add insult to injury, in my opinion.]

"Whaddo we do now, then?" I murmured softly, glancing around the lake. "My Clan'll likely send a rescue party and crash more holes into the tunnels. Might find you too."
Suddenly I paused, squinting my eyes, and asked abruptly, "How in the world did you make this place your home anyhow? 'S not like it screams 'live here' when you look at it..."
[I glanced around the place some more, wrinkling my nose at the skeletons, and then sniffed thoughtfully.]
"Anyway," I continued, seeming to forget I had asked a question, "I need ta get out of here soon, so you know. See you later. Or not."

[Slowly, I rose to my feet, wincing again as my head throbbed. I slowly padded forward, shuffling across the ground towards the only exit.
Now I remembered why I had stopped acting childish.

It was because it always got me hurt somehow...]

FEAR CAN TURN TO LOVE
YOU'LL LEARN TO SEE TO FIND THE MAN BEHIND THE MONSTER

▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬ ▬▬▬▬▬▬ ▬▬▬ ▬▬▬

The Phantom's eyes narrowed when Puresun accused him of being the one at fault, since he was luring her around. No, he was trying to scare her away, but it seemed that there was a little miscommunication. He gazed at Puresun without saying anything as she spoke, fully expecting her to turn around any moment, and shriek with terror when she saw his face. He was holding his breath and preparing himself...but she didn't turn around, surprisingly. She was respecting his wish to remain a mystery, to his surprise. He felt a pang in his heart as he realised that no cat has looked at him in the face for longer than he could remember...he wanted to know what that feeling was like, to have someone look straight into your eyes, yet he wished to remain hidden and live the life he had always known. These two feelings battled violently with each other in his heart for a few moments, and in the end "mystery" won.
"The only way out is through the way I came from, if you feel that you are up to it then leave. If not, then you will have to stay here until you are fit to leave."
He said coldly as he turned away to leave through the way he had come, to the tunnel. This wasn't good...this wasn't good at all. A she-cat had found out where his lair was, so his hiding place was no longer a secret.
"Nightclan will not come and look for you. This place reeks of death, and those who enter are cursed by the Phantom for eternity. Those who are not afraid...they will fall to their deaths in these tunnels. Either choice, death awaits, and they will not dare enter a place of death."
He said flatly as he walked towards the tunnel, stopping at the entrance and staring at the ground in silence, as if deep in thought.
"Puresun, there are questions best left unasked, and "why" is one of them. These are...things that I would rather not explain."
His voice was only a little more than a whisper, as if hiding a painful secret. Without another word, he dashed back up the tunnel, his paws automatically finding the right turns at forks. When he reached the surface, he immediately trotted over to a swampy patch of land where he knew lizards were plentiful. Spying a good sized lizard basking on a rock, he held his breath and crept forwards, pouncing at the right moment and pinning the lizard beneath his claws, killing it with a swift bite. He picked up his prey and started to head back, on the way using his paw to gather a few cobwebs and dock leaves for her wounds. One glance at her condition and he knew well enough that she was in no state to move around right now. He was no medicine cat, but he knew from experience that dock leaves soothed pain. Dangling the lizard by the tail and the bundle of leaves clenched in his jaws, he headed back to his tunnel. As he made his way down, half of him hoped that Puresun had gone, while half of him wanted her to stay. Shaking those thoughts aside, he blanked out his mind as he made his way back to the cavern.

To his relief, he found Puresun fast asleep by the lake. Making his way over to the she-cat quickly, he gazed down at her for a moment, uncertain what to do. He hastily chewed up the dock leaves and lightly pressed them into the worse of her wounds, namely her head, and he saved the cobwebs to place onto her lighter wounds. It was a hasty job but it would have to do, plus why was he giving her herbs anyway? Normally he wouldn't have hesitated to kill whoever dared intrude. Nudging the lizard in front of her, he backed away and raced back out through the tunnel, not wanting her to see him before she woke up from her deep slumber. Now...what would he do with an injured cat in his lair, with the risk of an entire clan storming his home?

(Had Timber's permission to auto her falling asleep blaugh )

[ I blinked as he spoke, twitching my ears at the tunnel. I hadn't made it very far before I had to rest. He was right- I was in no condition to move around. I grumbled to myself grumpily, scuffling my paw across the ground.
A rescue party depended on how badly they wanted to rescue me. Would they really be smart enough to not enter, or would they want their warrior back at the risk of more lives?
I didn't know...I couldn't know. I felt too distant from my clanmates as of late...would any of them even care that I had disappeared?
Most of them would assume I was out still with my apprentice, of course, but after that...? Shadowpaw might even wander down here...!

Lost in my thoughts, I raised my head and realized that the Phantom had left. I twitched my whiskers and sat on my haunches, too tired to move.
I was so tired...I needed a rest terribly. I had no suspicion I was in any danger in this cave here, aside from a random rockfall or something, and somehow felt trust in that the Phantom would let me rest...

*****************

I fluttered my eyelids, slowly opening them to see the dim cave looming around me. I sighed irritably- that was right. I had been having a nice dream about being a snake, but instead of my nest in NightClan I'd awoken here.
My attention was caught by a sticky, cool feeling on my head. I stiffly raised my head and dabbed at it with a paw. I sniffed the stuff on my paw and recognized dock leaves. I shifted on my feet to get a better whiff and felt some tugging on my pelt.
Turning, I sniffed my wounds to find cobwebs covering them, staunching any bleeding. Though it was a messy job, it had worked, and my wounds were feeling slightly better.
But...the Phantom? Tending to an intruder?
Something about that seemed off. He had sounded so cruel and cold, but if he had tended to me like this, was he really that bad?

I purred softly, feeling a small affection for him. That old rascal wasn't as solitary as he'd like to think. Curse of the Phantom, my fuzzy butt- for a 'cursed' intruder, he had been pretty decent to me!
I rose to my feet cautiously and found, to my relief, that my headache had faded in my much-needed sleep. I couldn't tell how long I had slept, but I was certainly well-rested.
My nose suddenly informed me of an enticing aroma, and I turned my head to see fresh-caught prey nearby. I sniffed at the creature and ate it readily, licking my lips as I finished.
This wasn't so bad! I had begun to panic earlier, wondering how in the world I would get out, but I felt much better now. All the Phantom had to do was lead me out or something and I'd be fine. Though I was still limping...

I approached the lake and took a quick drink, surveying my surroundings with more scrutiny. It was true, there was only one exit- but also another hole well-hidden in darkness...another exit?
It was across the lake, almost in the middle of it! Did one have to swim/walk across the lake to get to it? Why did he say there was only one exit if there was one on the other side?
I slowly waded into the lake, remembering how shallow it was. As I walked, my confidence rose. I had walked several tail-lengths from shore! If this pond was entirely shallow, that would mean the whole body of water was only an illusion to discourage cats from swimming across- how convenient!
At that moment, however, the ground suddenly dropped from below me, and I coughed and spat, failing violently. I pushed backwards, scrambling back onto the shallow end.

Well. That explained it...

I was in no condition to swim either. So...one exit to a maze of tunnels likely to collapse at any given moment, and another exit impossible to reach leading to something unknown?

My fate really did lie in the Phantom's...paw-like things! I still had no idea what he looked like, to boot!]

FEAR CAN TURN TO LOVE
YOU'LL LEARN TO SEE TO FIND THE MAN BEHIND THE MONSTER

▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬ ▬▬▬▬▬▬ ▬▬▬ ▬▬▬

The Phantom had caught himself another lizard (sorry I can't be bothered to type out how he caught it ;A; ) and was lying beneath one of the spacious tree roots, eating his meal with just a hint of unease in his actions. Right now, he had two choices. He could either leave the she-cat where she is, hoping that she would leave on her own...or he could let her rest in his lair. If she stayed in the cavern however, there was a large chance that she would freeze to death. After all, the cavern was spacious and little sunlight reached it, and at night when the land loses its heat, it can reach almost freezing temperatures. The only choice he had, if he was to allow her to live was to lead her to a safe place. Not one living creature has ever laid paws on his lair, and she would be the first in many, many moons.

As he finished his meal, he quickly buried its remnants under the tree. The bones of the lizard would warn any intruder that the Phantom haunts this place, warning them to stay away. He darted down the tunnel and in almost no time he reached the cavern, eyes quickly adjusting to the darkness. He arrived just in time to see Puresun attempting to paddle away...and as he expected, the lake's depth it came as a shock to her. As she failed and scrambled back onto the shallow end of the pool, the Phantom silently crept up behind her until he stood two foxlengths away, standing so that only the black side of his face was turned towards her and she couldn't see his white side.
"Come, Puresun."
He said in his husky and seductive voice, starting to walk away from her along the lake shore, not waiting for her reaction...until he suddenly stopped beside a large driftwood, its end pushed up against the rocky shore of the cavern to stop it from drifting away. The piece of driftwood was large enough to hold several cats afloat, and floated easily in the lake. The Phantom stood beside his mode of transport, turning back to Puresun with a calm gaze, only revealing the black side of his face to her.
"Come."

[ I flinched as a voice rang out from the darkness. I had been so focused on my task that I had not previously noticed the presence before; I turned my head isntinctively and caught sight of a black cat sitting with a calm composure.
Inwardly I hissed. Foxdung! I looked at him! Now I've added insult to injury...what now?
I couldn't help but observe offpawedly that this stranger wasn't as terrifying-looking at I had expected; in fact, he was very much the normal, good-looking tom.
I stood slowly to my feet and stared at the driftwood he proposed as a means of transportation. Slowly the idea formed in my head and I gasped. It was just like the leaves the two-legs rode in the lake! Like a floating log to ride on...
Something about it didn't seem right to me, but what choice did I have? He wanted to take me to the mysterious tunnel place. Maybe it was the way out!

I waded over to the log, hopping on casually, and flopped down on the surface of it, making it bounce softly. I twitched my tail amusedly and looked at the hole across from us on the other side of the lake.
Soon I'll uncover your mysteries, hole, and then you won't be so mysterious! Take that!
I felt like a kitten again, except I was exploring the innards of an underground maze with a mysterious phantom instead of galloping around the marshes with a shadow demon.

At least I'd have funny stories to tell my kitte...

A sharp pang throbbed in my heart, and I lowered my eyes with remorse. That's right...I wouldn't be able to raise the kittens now.
I felt like a mother who had lost all reason to be called by that title- because I was. I had no mate and no kittens. Only a confused instinct to protect my babies who were farther away from me than I dared think...
Maybe you'll have another litter, a voice in my head suggested.
With who? I wondered. Forsaken? No thanks, one batch of demon breed is enough for me, thank you very much...besides, it's unlikely Forsaken will ever be able to live in NightClan...
Forsaken. My heart felt a sharp pang once more. Since the demon had left, I had felt more lonely than ever. Even though I was among my clanmates, I had spent more time with Forsaken as a kitten and therefore felt more kismit with him. I loved my mother and brother, but they were both busy with Clan duties...and my best friend had been killed by her mate.
I was so alone...I could feel it tugging at my heart achingly. So alone! Alienated from friends and family because I had snuck out to meet Forsaken for so long...I couldn't even stick to my apprentice without falling down a hole and chatting with a phantom or two.

It was almost as if trouble flew to me like bees to honey!

Enough self-pity. I was going to get out of here and prove to my Clan that I was a loyal warrior!
But...what of the phantom?
My mind spun off track again, deliberating to itself. How did he get here? Why was he all alone? Alone wasn't good. It was very sad. Forsaken was alone too once, and I had wanted to help him. I now felt the same feeling for the Phantom. I wanted to help him, but could anyone help him...?

I stared up at the roof of the cave, eyes glazed in thought and off in their own world.]

"Alone is a horrible word," I whispered to myself, twitching my whiskers.

[Purge... the wind whispered. Save their happiness...right the wrong to achieve your peace...]

Like any perfect gentleman, the Phantom stood on the shore and waited until Puresun had gotten onto his log before he climbed on himself, using both back paws to push off before sitting behind her on a spot that was closest to the water. The log was small and light making it easily controllable. Occasionally he would stick one paw into the water to paddle, but otherwise the log seemed to float pretty much on its own.

He didn't say a word on the journey across the underground lake, but his mismatched eyes were fixed on Puresun, almost with a calculating look in his eyes. Strangely enough, she seemed almost...excited, like a kit. Exactly why she was excited he didn't know. She had just been catnapped by the very Phantom who haunted these hollows, and currently on the journey to the ghost's lair...if anything, she should be scared stiff right now. Yet, she was excited...yet at the same time, she seemed to be having a battle of emotions inside her mind. "Alone is a horrible word..." He faintly caught her whisper to herself, but he had no idea what it meant. "Alone" pretty much was the second word of his life, he had never known a life to be spent in the company of others. So why was it a horrible word? "Pity" and "Sympathy" had little meaning to him, they were just words that expressed...nothing.

The journey was spent in complete silence, until the log hit the other side of the shore with a bump. He jumped off and walked forwards, beckoning for Puresun to follow with his tail.
"Come."
He said, with one simple word. Walking slowly to match Puresun's pace in her weakened state, he stopped in front of the mouth of a cave, a few foxlengths away from the shore. A few narrow streams of sunlight hit the shore, giving the place some much needed light. The walls of the cavern narrowed and converged to form a smaller cave inside the underground cavern, providing him with shelter and warmth.
"This is my domain...my lair."
He said quietly, very unwilling to show an outsider the very place where he dwelled...but what choice did he have? It was either bring her here, or leave her to die of cold on the other side of the shore.
"You must rest, until you are well enough to go back. If you stay on the other side, you will freeze to death."
Was this what others called..."compassion"? He questioned himself about this feeling, but he was only taking her in because she would die otherwise. He stood at the mouth of the cave and turned back to gaze at Puresun, still revealing only the black side of his face. If he showed his other side, his white cursed side, she would react like the others - hiss and flee, no doubt about that.

[ The thoughts whirling around in my head came to an abrupt stop when the log hit the shore once more, this time on the other side.
I jumped to my feet, rocking the log and stumbling off. I hopped back up on my feet, eyes wide.]
"Jolly good," I chirped, raising my tail in excitement.
[My excitement was overstepping its bounds, however; although I felt like I could run around in circles, my muscles already ached from my stumble from the log, and my head began to hurt again.
I followed him into the tunnel only to find out that it was an enclosed cave. A den!
Surprised, I turned and gave him a questioning look, but he explained before I could ask. His lair? What a funny word for den... I sniffed around curiously, ears twitching.
At first, I didn't understand why he didn't lead me out of the tunnels, but then I remembered how cold it could get above ground in the marshes. What with all the holes in this tunnel, this place probably was no warmer...
But why would a "heartless phantom" feel so much compassion for an outsider? It baffled me, but I was grateful for it.

I turned to give him my thanks when I realized he was holding his head funny agian, like he had done while riding on the log. I squinted at him and leaned forward, twitching my whiskers curiously.]

"Why're you holding your head like that?" I asked curiously, twitching my nose. "Did you get hurt?"
[I didn't smell blood, so why? I turned my head, trying to get a glimpse of the other side of his face, unaware of what awaited me on the other side.
And then I caught glimpse of it. White- harsh white-fur, and horrible scars across his face, and the blue eye-!

I gasped, taking a step backwards with shock. Then my tail stood straight up and I galloped forward, inspecting the wound with an ignorant worry.]
"Great StarClan that looks painful! Who did that to you? That's just horrible! Does it hurt? Are you in pain?"
[I fussed over the wound like a mother to her kit, or a mate to her mate, hazel eyes wide with worry. I was unaware of his discomfort and licked the wound once, immediately wanting to heal it if it was in pain or-or-or-or something!]
"Who would do that to you?" I repeated. "Why, they'd be-be black-hearted to hurt someone like that! What in the- how- oh bother! What right to give scars like that-no good- downright-"
[I sputtered, unable to conceive for what reason a scar like that would be made.
But I suddenly came to my senses, realizing how rude I must've been, and promptly backed away, embarrassment flashing over me.]
"Ohhhh dear I've made a fool of myself again, I didn't mean to hurt your feelings," I sputtered, shaking my head. "Sometimes I-get excited, you see and- say things without thinking...it's nothing personal, I was just..." I faded off, a remorseful look crossing my face.
"...worried."
[Maybe that was my problem.]
"Always...worried."

[I sat down, an unreadable expression crossing my face. In fact, it would be an indescribable feeling.]
"I have scars too, you know," I sighed, "but mine can't be seen..."

[I had no idea why I said that or what for, but this night was crazy enough to be a dream. It didn't make sense to begin with.

It still didn't make sense...]

The Phantom turned away from Puresun when she asked why he was holding one side of his face away from her. How could he show her, much less tell her? Before he could say anything, however, she had galloped forwards, thrusting her face into his. He was so shocked at the move that he stood completely still for a few heartbeats, mismatched orbs widened with shock. Her string of questions went unanswered, until her tongue flicked out and licked his scars. He instinctively closed his blue eye and flinched violently, twisting his head away from hers as he took a few steps backwards. He opened his mouth to speak, but no words came out. It had been so long since he had felt a cat's tongue against his fur...he had completely forgotten what it felt like. It filled his heart with a warm, embracing feeling, and small tingles shot down his spine. Who would do that to you?" At that simple question, his eyes narrowed and his lips lifted into a terrifying snarl, his hackles raising. In the dim light however, she probably couldn't see his rising discomfort. He hardly even heard her next string of questions, the anger was boiling inside and it threatened to overwhelm him any -
"You fool! You should never have looked!"
He roared as he bounded forwards, bowling over Puresun and pinning her down with both forepaws. He gazed down into Puresun with eyes filled with maddened rage, their faces only a mouselength apart. His oddly patterned face, his disfiguring scars coupled with his raged snarl were indeed terrifying.
"You want to know why a mother would scar her own kit? You want to know why a clan would want to murder a kit because he was born with a cursed face? You want to know why a whole clan would be after a cursed kit's blood, and he was forced to hide in the tunnels for his whole life?"
He snarled fitfully into Puresun's face, his voice filled with rage, anger and...pain. Amber and blue hues gazed into hazel, overwhelming hatred and anger showing evidently. It seemed like an eternity before the rage died down in his mismatched eyes, and he slowly got off Puresun, looking hurt, regretful and...confused.
"Leave as soon as you are well enough to return."
His voice was barely more than a whisper as he backed away from Puresun, as if cowering away from her. He backed up against the wall of the cave and curled up into a tight ball, covering his face with his tail. In his position, he was almost a complete changeover from just now, looking weak, helpless and...vulnerable. Opening one amber eye, he glanced at Puresun warily, watching her. Just...watching.

[ My ears flattened as he suddenly attacked me, eyes widening. I was too shocked to react as he pinned me down, and I stared at him with wide eyes, listening to his words.
As he suddenly backed off, I slowly rose to my feet, an unreadable (but detectably sad) expression forming on my flat face.
A Clan? He had been part of a Clan? Cursed...? There were too many curses around here. Too many mistakes...grievances...this cat really was like Forsaken.
Chased away by a Clan...could he, too, be cursed by StarClan? Well, he was obviously a living cat, as far as I could tell. Could it be possible that a normal Clan had cursed him?!
But maybe...curse wasn't literal. Maybe curse was akin to some form of banishment. Like cursing someone from setting foot on a Clan again...

I tilted my head at him, blinking with kind, soft eyes.]

"I'm sorry I upset you," I murmured quietly, "and I'm sorry you bear so much pain. I don't know your past very well, but I know this: someone, or some creatures, has or have wronged you. It is not my place to say whether or not you deserved it- only you know that very well- but from what I can see, you're not something to be chased away, and even if I'm assuming, I don't think you deserved it.
"You're kind, maybe quiet...you saved me from certain death, and you know compassion. That is what I see. A face is a face, you know, wheter or not it is beautiful. The soul it what truly matters, in every creature."

[My eyes glittered as the world around me blurred together. A single light, trembling yet strong, glimmered in front of me. The only 'power' I had...seeing souls. Relatively useless, given normal circumstances, but now...]
"And your soul is beautiful. Even when tainted with agony and anger, it is still beautiful. You are good, Phantom, even when others have forced you to do wrong. You still have the light..."

[I dipped my head respectfully, turning away from him.]
"I will respect your wishes of course. This is your home after all. I give my injuries a little less than another sunset before I can safely leave your home. Rest well, and goodnight..."
[I shuffled across the floor to the opposite side of his den, mumbling to myself about this or that concerning what I will do once returning to NightClan. I made a makeshift nest out of dirt on the only earthy patch I could find on this side of the den and flopped down eagerly. I was known to be comfortable wherever I was sleeping as long as I got sleep; it was quite useful on long journeys as most other cats preferred a soft nest.
I closed my eyes, allowing my breath to go shallow, but feigned sleep; I could not fall asleep for some reason but remained in fake slumber, hoping somehow I would soon rest.]

FEAR CAN TURN TO LOVE
YOU'LL LEARN TO SEE TO FIND THE MAN BEHIND THE MONSTER

▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬ ▬▬▬▬▬▬ ▬▬▬ ▬▬▬

The mysterious tom listened in complete silence as Puresun spoke, saying that she was sorry and that he didn't deserve this. What did she know? She was only a kit when they hounded him out of Nightclan, so he didn't expect her to understand. Instantly he regretted his outburst just now, he should never have said anything to Puresun. What if she goes back to Nightclan and tells all the clan cats, and they come to hunt him down? As he thought, exposing himself to some cat from the outside was a bad idea.

His eyes widened slightly as Puresun blinked down at him with soft, hazel eyes...those kindly eyes, even though they were a different colour, looked so much like...
Lavenderstar.
The only other cat in this world who had gazed upon him with kindness...Though, in the end she was just like all the others, choosing Nightclan's duties over him and leaving him utterly alone to fend for himself in Dead Cat's Hollow. He mentally pushed those thoughts aside, telling himself that all cats thought the same. Still...he found himself drawn to her talk about his soul being beautiful. "Souls" had always been just another meaningless word to him, he couldn't see it anyway so how could such a thing exist? Still, she claimed that his "soul" was beautiful. How could she see his soul, and more importantly, how would it be beautiful? Needless to say, no one had ever said he was beautiful before, and he didn't need anyone to tell him that he wasn't. Still...a beautiful soul? How could she tell?

His gaze never left Puresun even when she shuffled across to the opposite side of his den, curling up and seemingly falling asleep. Even when her breathing went shallow and her eyes closed in slumber, his mismatched gaze never left her. He climbed to his feet and softly padded towards Puresun, not wanting to wake her up. He stopped beside her and bent down, hesitating for a few heartbeats before allowing his nose to gently brush against Puresun's cheek. He couldn't remember what another cat's fur felt like, and Puresun's fur against his nose was...warm, and welcoming.
"Thank you Puresun, you are the first."
He murmured softly in her ear in his melodic and unworldly voice, but since she was asleep (or so he thought) she won't be able to hear him anyway. He pulled away from her and slowly padded out of the cave and towards the shore, sitting down next to the lake's surface and gazing across the underwater lake. He sat as still as a rock, but his mind was in turmoil. So much has happened tonight...but tomorrow sunset, it would be back to it was before, living alone without a soul knowing his existence. Tomorrow, it would all be over.
