Um...yeah, I got randomly bored on day and ended up making this topic. I don't know how many people in this guild are drummers, but then again, I'm also relatively new. I've discovered that playing snare in marching band (which is what I happily do) is a lot harder than it seems, for me anyway. I started drumming with I was 4, which by all rights should've make it easier right? Nope? I started in colonial fife and drum, and then I played the trumpet all the way through middle school. I've been in the fife and drum scene for a long time, so I'm used to reading Swiss music. Yeah...so marching band music is in no way, shape, or form the same. Why can't there be more rudimental drummers out there?!

There are more rudimental drummers. Colony High School's (So. Cal) battery know ALL of the 40 international rudiments. I use a lot a rudiments, too. Even in kit playing. I set up my toms like quads.

I am a girl in pit. Actually, I only played one keyboard and that was the vibraphone (I also played the tambourine, blew the whistle, and rolled cymbols)... And actually, as a new kid.... I only really had solos! ^.^ Percussion is by far one of my favorite sections.

^_^ **waves** Greetings, fellow drummer! Though perhaps I should be called a xylophone addict. ^_^ That's my thing really.

My boyfriend began his drumming career at the same age, though he's a set drummer mostly.

Marching band music is evil and wrong (^^ kidding, but it's definitely hard). And there aren't many rudimental drummers out there because.... many "drummers" can't play rudiments! Like me! But at least I have an excuse, being a xylo addict.

I'm glad someone made a topic for percussionists! Struggle on, my friend.

I kind Agree with you when you say that marching is Hard, but it's also what I do, so it is kinda of easier when you love it. 3nodding
I'm in love with my Quads, and I do agree with helter skelter, the snare is hard to play, even for people who have been playing for 8 years like me. sweatdrop

Only been playing a year or so, but i've caught on pretty fast

I'm not a really a DCI person though. >.<

HEHEHE.... rudimental drummers... and snare is hard?!?!?! HAHAHAHA I'm a junior and have been marching Bass drum since i started highschool (3 seasons) and everyone says why haven't you moved up and the reason is, Bass drum is hard, it's 5 to 6 people on the Bass line each year at my school and we all have to play together. I've played bass 2 and 3 (which at most schools is like the size of bass 3 and 4) but i've carried bass 5 (my instructor says no girl will ever play bass 5)

Horray for me not being here since I made the first post! Yes, I completely agree with you. Tonal bass drums are very difficult to play correctly. It's a matter of coordinating a number of different people which various skill levels and making it sound like one continuous beat. This can be especially hard on those happy sixteen note runs when one person's over there picking his nose and completely misses the and of three -.-

Anywho, I no longer participate in Marching Band, simply because I'm coming up on my last semester as a college senior and my time has been twiddled away to nothing but a bloody stump. I did continue to play up until now, and did not stray from my beloved snare drum. While I hope to continue my studies in music far beyond graduation, I find myself locked in a closet with very, VERY few moments of free time. Go life.

I'm a Xylo/bell player! I just heart playing one of the highest pitched percussion instruments, but i love my bass and snare/tenor too! *sigh* really got into this section to march the quads but my director has something against marching quads. anywho anyone here participating in INDOOR this year?

My Band and another band in our county are participating together in Indoor Drumline. I, however, did not choose to join it.

w00t pit! I'm the section leader of my school's pit <3 Pit is amazing. What's funny is that I used to absolutely hate mallet parts when I began playing, but now they're my favorites!
PostPosted: Sun Jan 20, 2008 7:27 pm

I was co-section leader this year [Pit]. Was, because we don't have section leaders during concert season. Or a Drumline/Pit, obviously. It's just 'Percussion' during concert season.
And mallet instruments were always my favorite. <3
They always have the really fun parts, especially in songs like Tempered Steel, Rush, Rising Dragons, and Vesuvius.
Oh! And our Winter Drumline show this year. Rewind. <33
