 Roy could be unshakeable after even most costly gaffes. His mishandle of puck late in Game 4 of Stanley Cup Finals helped Devils tie series 2-2, n' Avs fell into a 3-2 hole 2 nights later. Undaunted, Roy told coach Bob Hartley, "It's your job to figure out how to get us a goal [in Game 6) because I'm not letting in any." True to his word, Roy blanked Devils, 4-0, in New Jersey, makin' 24 saves. 2 nights later, Avs captured Cup.

 Along with his numerous awards, Roy was an 11-time All-Star. These games weren't always showcases of great goaltendin'. In 2002, Roy was nicked for two first-period goals by Teemu Selanne of the World Team, which beat North America, 8-5.

 Early in Roy's career, some experts feared that his knees would crumble under strain of his physically demandin' style of play, but durin' 2001-02 season, he passed Terry Sawchuk's career mark for games played by a goaltender (971) and kept on going.

 Much-honored goaltender Patrick Roy retired on 5/28/2003 n' his number 33 followed suit durin' a ceremony in Denver followin' October. Accompanied by wife Michele, Roy waved farewell to Avs and their fans.

Here a gallery of some Unlikely World Series Heroes Johnny Podres--1955 Brooklyn Dodgers  Podres became a Brooklyn legend when he pitched Dodgers to their first World Series title. Podres went 9-10 in regular season before beatin' crosstown Yankees in Games 3 n' 7, latter a 2-0 shutout at Yankee Stadium.

Bobby Richardson--1960 New York Yankees  A good-fieldin' 2nd baseman who hit only .253 with 26 RBIs on a loaded Yankees team, Richardson hit .367 with 2 doubles, 2 triples, a grand slam n' 12 RBIs in Fall Classic. Richardson earned MVP honors, but Pirates won Series on Bill Mazeroski's home run in 9th inning of Game 7.

Donn Clendenon--1969 New York Mets  Clendenon platooned at 1st base n' hit only .248 in regular season. He didn't even play in NLCS. But Clendenon hit solo home runs in Games 2 n' 4 of Series n' had a 2-run shot when New York won clincher 5-3. Clendenon hit .357 for Series, scored 4 of Mets' 15 runs, n' had 4 of their 13 RBIs.

Gene Tenace--1972 Oakland Athletics  A part-time catcher, Tenace hit .225 with 5 homers and 32 RBIs durin' regular season. In World Series, he hit .348 with 4 of Oakland's 5 homers n' drove in 9 of his team's 16 runs. Tenace became a regular the followin' season n' helped A's repeat as champions in '73 n' '74.

Brian Doyle--New York Yankees 1978  Doyle was a backup 2nd baseman who hit .192 in 39 games. An injury to starter Willie Randolph forced Doyle into lineup for World Series against Los Angeles. Doyle responded by goin' 6-for-17, includin' his 1st career extra-base hit (a double) as Yankees beat Dodgers in 6 games.

Darrell Porter--1982 St.Louis Cardinals  After battin' .231 durin' regular season, Porter came alive in October n' earned both NLCS n' World Series MVP honors. In Series, Porter delivered a critical 2-out, 2-run double in Game 2, a 2-run homer in Game 5 n' a clutch RBI single in Game 7 as St. Louis defeated Milwaukee.

Mickey Hatcher--1988 Los Angeles Dodgers  Kirk Gibson n' Orel Hershiser grabbed headlines, but Hatcher hit .368 durin' Series n' sparked Dodgers with 1st inning homers in Game 1 n' 5. Hatcher hit 1 homer in 191 at-bats durin' regular season.

Pat Borders--1992 Toronto Blue Jays  In a Series dominated by pitchin', Borders caught every innin' of all 6 games n' went 9-for-20 with a home run and 3 RBIs while his teammates hit .210.
