But with an astounding amount of intelligence for a zombie, it waited out the barrier. The fire fizzled down to nothing, and the cracks around her disappeared, but she was left just a little colder as a result. Thaw couldn't help her anymore past his barrier's defense, and from the way the zombie was hissing at her, it almost felt like it knew that.

Now or never, child. Thaw warned. Maebe picked her trident up, slid it carefully in her arms, and waited for the monster to strike.

It shrieked as it came down on her, leaping into the air to drop her to the floor. The trident was deep in it's gut, and she repeatedly stabbed it again, and again, even as it sliced against her shield in it's final stand. She used the trident to throw it off of her, just as it cracked it's body in two and began to shudder with it's final throes.

She sat up, holding Thaw tight against her body, and watched two pieces of a zombie die in front of her. It was a sobering sight, and she hadn't even had a drink yet. But she felt Thaw's pride radiating out from within her, and tried to take comfort in that - because there would be no one else commending her on her efforts. Maebe had done it on her own. Just like she'd planned.

It was a hollow victory.

"Aye man, I didn't get like, the usual ******** horrible backlash, you know that drained way I get? It was a damn good choice then on his part. Shame my ******** version picked some ******** bling." He tapped the huge blue (and blood soaked) sapphire around his neck with a fingernail.

The monster was falling apart, losing its ability to hold its mutated bulk together, Rep didn't want to give it a chance to recover any further, Harrison had its attention fully as he stalked up behind it and jumped, bringing the full weight of Tracey to bear along its spine. It let out a gurgling sound between a bellow and a shriek and dropped in a sloppy heap to the floor where it didn't move any ******** finally." he said grimly.

Harrison got a look over. "You are covered in s**t again." This seemed to warrant hazarding a butt pat. "Guess it's a good thing you brought more water. We should get back, I bet those bastards haven't brought any of those kids back to the rink. ******** sentimental tits."

Lex thought they were alone, that they'd managed to be in the one store in the entire mall without any of the infected. Unfortunately, he and Benji's luck had come to an untimely end. Lex heard groaning, the crunching of flesh, and... Horace? Oh God, Horace Nokoni was going to be their savior? This was ******** embarrassing.

"Horace? Lex whisper-shouted, eyes scanning the darkness for any light that could give the younger man away. He heard the death trainee talking with another voice, unfamiliar but no doubt a Hunter due to the nature of the conversation.

"You...you know them?" Benji asked through a snuffly nose and weak tears. Ugh, children. Lex nodded, peeking around a corner and finally finding the sillhouettes of the infected, Horace, the other hunter, and what he assumed were more civilians. Christ, this was going to be a long night.

"Listen, Horace. I need some light to aim properly, or I could sink some bullets into these three." Lex said aloud, fully aware of the fact that his words would more than likely cause the civilians to panic. Good thing they already were. "Have you found anything?"

"Tempted to head right back for a shower," Harrison grumbled, clearing his goggles of muck and picking up said water again. "You left the rink to come get me? Who's watching it?"

"Uh." Rep said, and that was answer in itself. "We should probably jog."

'Pretty' was not a metric that Mimsy was especially well-versed in, but that look of unyielding trust carried her far into an indisputable certainty that she looked perfect. Was perfect. And anything so perfect could easily be something as simple as 'pretty'.

Her eyes wandered to Robert, briefly watching him with a new and curious understanding.

"It is very pretty," she confirmed, supposing that this was a more sensible thing to say to a child compared to aesthetic value is irrelevant in contrast to your astronomical perfection. "That is why it should belong to you."

Then her focus was on Robert again, her look now questioning him for an entirely opposite reason. Was he attempting to be comical? It didn't appear so, but his sentiment was so beyond her grasp that she could only be puzzled in response.

"He and I are..." Explaining this with a small child present would be difficult. She shifted uncomfortably. "...similar. In nature. On divergent paths. You have witnessed my progress and my past, and know what was I was at risk of becoming without you, so..."

She raised her brows and hoped he could draw this conclusion, while she calculated one of her own. Strains were capable of mutating, and she had not been observant enough to know if any potentially adverse effects of the antidote existed, which was a painful shortcoming to accept at the moment. The hypothetical complications brought the same statistical gamble as any other option. It offered no definitive route to good.

Being brave enough to look him in the eye as she shook her head no meant being strong enough to not hide that she had begun to cry.

It was Alice who noticed it first. Her eyes were sharp, and she reached out, patting Mimsy's face where the tears had just started to drop. Robert's face squished with regret, and he pulled Mimsy into his other arm, holding her pressed just as firmly against him as he had Alice. He felt sick at the very thought that Mimsy considered herself anything like Rep. He refused to believe it. She was wrong, and that was the end of it. Rep was just a piece of s**t, without excuse. But to kill was not an indicator of whether you were good or bad. Killing someone meant you couldn't even force yourself to understand why life was so important. It wasn't a question of the kind of person you are, it was just..

The thread of thought cut off abruptly, as his breaking heart couldn't take much more of where it was going.

"Fine. But kids? Kids?" Why was this so hard for Robert to comprehend? Why was it so easy for Mimsy to? He remembered exactly what he needed to in order to answer that question, and shut it all down as quickly as possible before it made him sick.

"So we're damned if we do, and we're damned if we don't." He muttered, bending his face to kiss her hair. "And he hasn't even responded to me telling him to ******** off yet, so for all we know, he's coming here to try and fight with us." That was something he couldn't bear to let Alice witness. They were supposed to be the heroes. They were working together to save lives. To save her life. To save her family, if they were still here. If Rep and Robert began to brawl, they wouldn't look like heroes. They would look like bullies.

There was no right answer to this.

"Let's.." What was he going to do? He had to protect them. He had to make a decision. "Let's just." But he was out of options, and every single path had a skull and crossbones at the end of it. "Walk.. towards the rink.." And what? Hand her over to a man that Mimsy believed was capable of killing a child? Mimsy?! "Just towards it. No rush. We'll get there. Together. Right?"

At least, until he could figure out something else.

If he could figure out something else.

A child's tiny hand was touching her face to fix her tears as her husband pulled her into a hug to calm her.

The effectiveness of this teamwork would have been incredible in any other circumstance, and if Mimsy could choose to save a memory in a tiny jar to retain forever she thought that this should be one of them. This tremendous significance was among the reasons why the caring gestures from the two of them only served to make it worse, seizing her chest within the tight grip of an escalating anxiety, reminding her that this was important. This had only one opportunity for her to get it right. There wouldn't be another Alice to forgive her mistake.

She buried her face against Robert's coat and listened to him speak, her inability to push herself into action forcing her to leave his questions and insights unanswered. A short shudder of a breath was exhaled against him as he paused to kiss the top of her head, and she looked up at him in time to see him struggling with something he was having some difficulty voicing to her. She was patient, finding no need to hurry him along - especially now - and when he was finished she quietly pieced together the puzzle of a sentence that he had provided her with.

Of all of the solutions, this had the highest number of potentially unfavorable variables. This, above all of the others, plagued her with a suspicion that it would end badly. But when Robert carried her home from the asylum kicking and screaming, and asked her to trust him in situations very similar to this one, she had promised to do so and not to defy him like that again.

Trust him. I trust my husband, she told herself, taking a deep breath as she began to nod her head. Then she opened her mouth to speak, and out came a frightened little voice that was nowhere near as affirmative and emboldened as she'd made herself out to be.

"I can't." It seemed to startle her, stare wide as though she wished she hadn't said that. "I'm--I don't think I can be all--how could I ever--if--if."

There was a very clear definition of that 'if' in her panicked eyes, which desperately refused to abandon the sight of him.

Glancing from her phone to Taym, America returned the former to her pocket and didn't bring up the confirmation of the worst ******** sort of possibilities. It was tempting, to run and find the Morris couple and offer her help. But it was just as likely to bring unwanted attention as anything else. She trusted their ability to handle things together and send for help when needed.

She had to.

Summoning Stryker, America neatly smashed a heavy metal door off its hinges.

Another metal door was soon added to the last. America was not quite losing herself in the destruction and her own skill for it. Not quite. But it was the closest she could ever allow herself in public.

Finding an office area, America went straight to the set of metal lockers and began levering the whole row from their base, snapping at several passing trainees to help her move them.

This time it was a wooden door, and she took it off the hinges with her bare hands.

On her way back, she noticed a trainee struggling to remove the metal pull-down of a shopfront and stopped to help, lecturing about using charges needlessly, she'd seen that.

Every once in awhile, she'd stop and check her phone. Then scan her immediate area as if a wayward child and difficult life choice was hiding in the shadows.

The next metal pull-down she took out herself with vicious efficiency.

Searching out a sporting goods store, America found a large quantity of netting. Nothing Runic about it, just the sort people used for soccer and tennis. Smiling grimly, she hauled out what she could carry and ordered several nearby trainees to gather up the rest.
