"Let's head over the bridge. I hear Bill lives out there, and he's always doing weird experiments. It'd probably be interesting." Ray was trying less and less to pretend around Rose. Rose was totally oblivious to Ray's struggles, focused more on the wild pokemon that kept approaching Sparx. It was another one of those weird brown shelled things! Sparx dispatched it again with another thundershock. It took Rose a moment before recalling that her pokedex could scan the pokemon to tell her what it was. She'd have to do that if the creature came up again, seeing as when it was defeated, it tumbled back into the water.
Rose looked over to Ray when he spoke up about some Bill person that lives over the bridge. "Okay! ... who's Bill?" she agreed to go, but then inquired about this 'Bill'. Sparx floated along beside Rose as she started to move on with Ray across the bridge.
Fynx was paying the bare minimum attention to the trainers now that she had Rose's holocaster and was texting Atona. Her tail swayed behind her as she got a reply, chuckling a bit at the words on the screen. She could imagine him being stiff about talking to her over a communication device. Like he didn't know what to say, or maybe just overall being unfamiliar to this sort of attention or device. She glanced over to make sure Rose was still in sight before working on a reply. "He's some nerd guy," Ray responded, not really knowing much more than that. There'd been a mission out of Tohjo that involved reconnaissance, and he was pretty sure they'd stolen something of the guy's at some point. He checked his phone out of curiosity, but there weren't any active missions up that involved the scientist. Whatever- Ray was heading there for his own sake.
As they made their way along the bank towards Nugget Bridge, another of the strange... creatures appeared. "What...the f- heck?" Ray squinted at the gross tentacled cup-on-a-stick that was a lileep. There was some kind of odd device on its back. After Tyrogue dispatched the thing, it disappeared. "That device..." he trailed off, toeing a flat plate that had been left in the grass in place of the pokemon. He considered phoning the odd occurrence in to base, then shrugged and picked up the zap plate. Not my problem.

When they stepped onto the bridge, it became clear this was a hotspot of trainer activity. There were multiple battles going on, probably people training to take on the gym or something. Apparently Ray and Rose weren't going to make it across without being accosted, because some kid wearing a backwards hat had spotted them and was definitely about to make his way over. Damn. At first Ray was annoyed at anything holding them up. Then he realized this could help to fast-track his training. Maybe not as annoying as it seemed at first. Ray was glad to see that the TM he'd surreptitiously picked up in town was doing a good job powering up his nidoran. All his pokemon felt like peewees, and seriously needed some stronger moves. At first he'd been fine with following orders from Alessandro, but slowly he was losing his patience with acting like a clueless kid. Who cared if he overpowered them a bit? Besides, he'd gotten granbull back, and after they evolved his current pokemon would be pretty beefy too. He'd done the "cute team of loser pokemon of a noob" act long enough.

"Fairy types?" Ray asked with a raised brow. Focusing on just one type of pokemon was a surefire way to get your a** kicked by some kid with a nidoran. Ray was keeping a close eye on Nidoran. The thing was using a life orb, which meant its strength was slowly sapping away regardless of taking damage, and on top of that its ability meant there was a decent chance it would miss. Although Ray appreciated the extra power, he didn't like the unpredictability of it and was impatiently waiting for the thing to evolve so its ability would change (and that life orb would stop draining its health).

Hmm, it looked like, if he was lucky, Nidoran would just barely last the battle. But if he risked and lost, Nidoran would end up fainted and unable to battle for longer than Ray wanted to deal with. If Charmander Cole or Tyrogue had been equipped to take on fairy types, Ray would have swapped to one of them. But as it was, he decided to risk it. It was, he thought as Nidoran took out the trainer's last pokemon, very satisfying to sweep someone else using only one pokemon. "Thanks for the battle," he said cheerily as he healed Nidoran back up to full. The little poison type was much less of a baby about the sting of the potions than Cole was.

This time it was a girl, and she had been watching another battle going on when she cut off to trot over. "Hey! Wanna battle? Long as your date doesn't mind." Ray snorted. "She doesn't," he stated, not refuting the date part. If pressed, he'd just explain that is was more trouble than it was worth to explain.

It only took two pokemon for Ray to realize that this was a water type trainer. Great. For now Cole could deal with her pokemon, but that probably wasn't going to last. Figures. Well, so far Cole was two for two with these pokemon, and he hadn't taken any damage. Dragon rush was definitely doing the job. Once again, Ray figured he could probably risk it until the risk became too great. He just had to be careful. Wow, some pokemon were even more useless than Ray's, as impossible as that seemed. Still, a fire type pokemon against a water specialist could only go so far. As much as Cole needed the training, it just wasn't going to work anymore with this particular trainer. Considering Cole probably wouldn't even be helping out with the Cerulean Gym anyways it wasn't a big deal. It had been a while since he wished he'd gotten bulbasaur instead of a charmander.

For the girl's last pokemon Ray didn't really have a choice but to use his klow. The little snake made quick work of the girl's staryu. He was pretty sure the little snake could already beat the Cerulean gym leader, but with Rose tagging along he was happy to train a bit more to ensure he didn't make a fool of himself. Though he was quickly learning that looking cool in front of Rose wasn't really something he had much control of.
