It's okay, let her get used to it. For some reason, the light was brighter than what it suggested outside? Oh, no, it's just amplified by the white walls, white floor, white windows. Of an entire room of people sitting up in their beds, fixing her with silent stares. The room is bigger than it should have been, but the space she had to move was just this little bit in front of the door, everywhere else had either a bed, a person, or both.

Shh.

Let her get used to it. Her pursuer's calling, then a loud wet bang on the door. Oh, it shook, slightly, but did not give. And muttered cussing in pain and frustration with that smell muted, but wafting in. All while the patients in the room fixed their blank stares on her as one. Adults, little kids, elderly, all in white gowns and white sheets and white faces, not even a single blink or shift or breath taken. Except for a flash of brown darting away with muffled footsteps, further into the sea of white.

Shoulders scrunched up and muscles taut, it was obvious that she was feeling trapped once her eye was open again. Understandably so, being pressed between the stare of many eyes on one side and the racket caused by her angry pursuer on the other. She was left at a loss, unable to do much other than look back at them apologetically. Had she reached a dead end? Just where was she supposed to continue her search from there? Going back out the door didn't seem to be much of an option, certainly. The aching in her face eased off as with the slow movements of her neck she took in the sights of the room. A quiet utterance of "Sorry" eventually made its way out. And somber as the scene made her, her small flicker of determination wouldn't be snuffed out so easily. "I'm looking for someone. Might you have seen him?" Her words were hushed and brief, but it was likely better to save any details for the time being. No need to be too bothersome if no one there wanted to or could help, right? Verbal intrusions would all she'd be making for the time being, quietly resigned to her space by the door.

They slowly turned to look at each other with their dilated eyes, then turned back to stare at her some more, this red in the white. Blind to her exact situation, looks like.

"Who?" they all chimed in unison. Hard to not draw a parallel against a choir of owls, if owls were only as loud as the breeze in their tree. Good thing too, she could keep tabs on just how safe she was, now that there was hasty knocking and muffled shouts on the other side of the door. But also enough for soft whisperings and mutterings to reach her ear from a corner deeper in the room.

But the children, however, burst into smiles. Bright, cheeky smiles. One had the gall to pipe up "Is it Doctor Scarlet?" and giggle. Another swooned and squealed, "Miss Bunny's come to see Doctor Scarlet! How romantic, just like his knight in shining armor! We've got to help her!" Closer the kids come towards her, a mess of spotless gowns and happy faces and soft hands grabbing at her own, nosing a path through the rest of the patients towards the only wall with windows and sunlight streaming in. "Where is he? Let's look for him! Let's!"

Now that the noise was in the room, the noise outside turned into a deathly silence, punctuated only by bated breaths and a scrabbling at the lock.

Regardless of any eccentricity in how the reply was presented, it still contained the willingness that she'd hoped to find. "Oh~" Apprehension fading and body relaxing as she settled into herself as she stood, her expression softened as her mouth opened to offer further details. Only to be cut off by a group of children that apparently very much knew what they were talking about. It was a gentle sort of being taken aback, though it was obvious that her focused mind was caught offguard by the sudden flood of gentleness. "'Doctor Scarlet'... ? He does like red and have red eyes, so..." She hadn't long to ponder over it before being caught up in reveries probably not unlike her own. "B-bunny." Her face heating to a rosy shade of red further distinguished the mostly red and black silhouette she cut against the bright walls. "R-right~" Well, close enough. They were quite the keen ones, to have put things together so quickly. Though just how many people or items from outside made it inside the hospital might have factored in as well. Any way around it, she hadn't the heart to even offer forth her usual pointless protests. And there wasn't even so much as any effort to pull her hands away. Her soft spot towards children was being fully exploited. And while she wouldn't underestimate them, she still felt the need to try to look out for them. "I do need to find him... but is it okay for you to be out? And I think there might be complications with getting out of here..." She cast a wary glance back at the door as the struggle to open it could be heard as clicks and rattles. Just how long it'd stay secure was uncertain. And just what did that person want anyway?

The children hesitated, looking at each other. Oh yeah, they were all in here for a reason, and the reason was simple. Reminded of the consequences of disobeying the hospital staff, all of them fell quiet again with gentle 'aww's and 'but...'s, disappointed.

"But guys! We can't just not help Miss Bunny! Doctor's gonna be useless without her!" Hmm, Little Miss Romantic sure had a smart mouth. Grabbing as many of her peers' hands as possible, she pulled them further towards the back. "And we can all go on a secret field trip too!" Her enthusiasm certainly was not going to get them all outside in an instant, even if it brightened up a few faces. "Field trip, field trip!" they chanted, "field - "

The sound outside the door had completely ceased all of a sudden. No wait, there's something... a cold, snickety snick of a key, and off all the children go running, ducking back into their beds and huddling under the sheets! Save the brave little miss and her friend that was pulling at her dress and trying to get her back into bed. Oh no, and they end up squabbling, one worried for safety and the other for happy endings!

Now, with most of the children in their beds, there was enough floor space for her to walk up to the window, or to the back of the room where the dabs of colour fluttered around behind the white veil.

Getting away from the door seemed to be a good idea once she'd been given the opportunity to do so. It was just her he was after, right? Fending the mystery person off might be simple enough but there was no telling who might get hurt in the crossfire. Perhaps an attempt to lead him elsewhere would be futile, but she had to try.

She began to make her way to the back of the room, but not without making a stop first. Taking a moment to crouch down by the children for a moment, she made an attempt to assuage their unsettled feelings. "He'd be unhappy if you ended up hurt on his behalf, yes?" Just what sort of relationship Erhard had with the children was uncertain, but they didn't seem to be afraid of him. And from what she'd seen he was a sap for the little ones just like she was. "Keeping yourselves safe could also be considered as helping, surely." It was one of those things that might have been considered meager consolation if not for the bright way in which she'd relayed her message. With the hopeful smile that she showed as she stood back up and smoothed out her dress, it was plain that she honestly believed it. And from the way her enthusiasm was not unlike a child's, maybe they'd believe in her too!

Continuing to traverse backwards, she decided to see just how far back the room went. It was probably naive to believe there could be another exit. Or anything that could help her? Though whether it ended up being either of the two last resorts she had in mind, through the window or just phasing through the wall itself, she'd be making her escape in one way or another in time.

"But it's so boring to stay in here," whined the girl, following after her with courageous stupidity while her sensible coward of a friend continued pulling at her and shooting distressed looks at the door. "We don't ever get to go out, and even then nearly nobody comes to visit..." So why was she pulling the doe-eyed trick on Amarante? Did it work on the doctor as well? It was worth a shot, anyway.

Whoever had the bright idea to cram all the beds near the front of the ward, anyway? It certainly was a lot more roomy in the back than in the front, so much so that there was only one bed against the furthest wall. But no other doorway in sight, nope. And even in this room, where there were no cameras, she was still being watched. Although more openly, and by a very visible duo rather than an undescribed entity. One male patient in bed with a white face mask, and a young girl in a school uniform beside him, glancing between the red visitor and the faint blue wisp floating next to her own head. Any fainter and the only trace that could show the wisp was ever there was the floating cookie that was somehow eating itself.

"Alyssa, we've got to get back into bed," pleaded the little girl's friend, eyes widening at the door swinging open without a sound. "E-Everyone else is already in bed! We're going to get scolded if we don't get in too!" He's right, on one count, but the adults and elders still were up instead of in bed, their eyes following Amarante. What a bad example for the kids.

Those endearing eyes would be met with with a round grey eye that looked to be quite susceptible to the persuading looks she was receiving... but it seemed that a greater influence was at work. "Ahh~ Surely I'd get scolded for bringing you along." Her anxiety manifested itself in the form of twiddling thumbs and circling steps. That contradictory nature continued to persevere; considering to be part of his concerns quite precious and yet still very much wanting to avoid causing any worry. And though her priorities and stance were clear... she still ended up casting a sideways glance at the girl that certainly looked guilty. "Maybe I could try to visit you? No promises though, I'm afraid, as I doubt I'm supposed to be here in the first place." That she couldn't feel guilty about; not unless Erhard ended up inconvenienced or even punished by her showing up. And while her continued appearances at a place she hardly found palatable were something she begrudgingly dealt with rather than did deliberately, it was beginning to look like it was a place she'd just have to become accustomed to visiting.

But that would take time, and she certainly hadn't had enough of that just yet. Her usual boldness had begun to surface but wasn't there just yet, as she protectively shied away from the stares she'd collected. "S-sorry." The clash between her rebellious nature and the implied atmosphere likely factored in, as even before she was set on garnering the affections of a doctor she was a surprisingly good patient. Behaving whilst being harvested for sampling purposes always led her to be praised and well fed, of course! Disturbing his place of work was generally something she'd consider off limits, but he himself took priority over all of that. And feeling trapped in that room was starting to get to her, bowing her head apologetically to her observers as she began to approach her last alternative to brute force. Nervous fingers grasped at the window frame, providing support for a person so anxious to see just what it had to offer her. It certainly would take time to to accept her surroundings, but the fear was beginning to subside. The persistent need to see him was quite different though, building further as she continued to be unable to find him.

Poor girl, she looked so disappointed! "Awww.... It's okay, it's nice of you to have offered in the first place, Miss Bunny. Doctor Scarlet has to really take care of you!" But still caught up in her mini romance drama, of course. "Then we'll have another big happy family to play with!" Even her friend seemed exasperated at her cheery shipping.

Aww, it was a nice view of Durem from up here! The roads trailing from outside in, the tetris blocks of buildings, the clock tower chiming in the distance with clouds hovering just above. Wait, this room was on the fifth floor, right? Could a building's fifth floor really be this high up? That made no sense, the view should be more at home on the thirtieth floor rather than the fifth, yet the hospital on the outside certainly did not seem to extend all the way up like a skyscraper. Regardless, the windows were locked tight with grills, perhaps for any ah, adventurous patients who might think climbing out the window was a good idea.

And suddenly, all of the stares on her were gone. Or most of them. Everyone at the front of the room had turned away to stare at someone else, someone else who just entered the room, silent as a shadow. The same air of being around confined places and death for too long, but without the doctor's signature chill. But his presence alone made quite a few reactions in the room. The two kids ran up to Amarante's feet with headlamp-doe eyes, and the schoolgirl started whispering quickly to the masked patient, and the wisp ducked under the nearest bed.

"... Miss?" Hmm, even covered with black lenses, there was just a hint of recognition in that straight, lined face and that firm, calm voice. "I'm sorry, you're not allowed here at the moment. Visiting hours are... closed, for today. Perhaps you could come by next time, instead."

She hadn't been at the hospital long and already she was suffering from a massive amount of distraction. "Take care of..." A succession of color changes washed over her perplexed face, which blanched and then blushed over the assertions she was hit with. Surely nothing she hadn't already thought of herself, but to have it brought to the forefront so suddenly was certainly something she hadn't expected to have happened in such a place. Such nice thoughts, too! Well. She still wouldn't be deliberately maiming herself or making herself sick. But he could still care for her in other ways, couldn't he? But before she could think through the finer details of that, she was blindsided and dumbfounded by the idea of 'family.' "I... !" Regardless of how the child had meant the term it'd obviously had quite an effect on her. Were they really allowed to have that sort of happiness? On her part it still seemed wrong to even want it, considering all she'd done. But her real concern over the matter lied elsewhere, stated shyly as she expressed her interest in a roundabout sort of way. "Only... if he wants to." Too into it to dismiss it as children's thinking, but just responsible enough to not totally buy into it. Not completely, anyway.

While thoughts of a hopeful future thoroughly dizzied her, she didn't forget why she'd shown up again in such a place in the first place. Pressed against the window once more, the indistinct details in the distance began to come into focus. Between an eye freshly out of darkness and a murky day outside it almost seemed as if the place made a conscious effort to keep itself obscured. A hazy silhouette of a building here and there, and clock towers were hardly an uncommon sight, but... the sound. She was quite familiar with those chimes in particular, scarcely able to believe what she had managed to overlook previously. "...Town. I'm all of across town?!" As a creature of habit who'd spent the past few years in her own places and in the city's underground, it was hardly surprising that she wouldn't notice a big creepy hospital a considerable ways away from her bases of operation. And even less of a shock that in her fear she'd missed the familiar sights in the distance during her previous visit. To think that he'd worked and moved comparatively nearby, though. Had they always lived in the same place, when it came to the unusual sort of place they'd both ended up in? Romantic ideas like that were quick to subside though, upon the thought of the unsettling possibilities that also existed. Maybe they hadn't made their own connections to the underground tunnels just yet. They were an ancient and shady relic, so why would a hospital need them? The thought of it all hardly made her happy regardless of what truth there was to be found in it. Things making their way over to her house and knocking at the basement door at all hours? Her fault, she supposed, going for someone that somehow had more entanglements than she herself did. At least there was the matter of the locked doors and subterranean etiquette that any invaders would have to deal with. Being shady didn't mean that the people that used the tunnels were without their own code of ethics, after all.

And just when she was feeling a bit better about it all, the sensation of being surrounded snapped her attention back to reality and the fact that they'd been joined by another presence. Putting a hand to both heads of the children that had flanked her in an effort to comfort them, she turned to face just who had entered the room. It wasn't the person from before, was it? After taking a quiet moment to study the individual, the request was answered with an exasperated sigh. "Haa~ But I can't leave until I've fulfilled my objective." It wasn't the time to be defensive about it. Not just yet. "And it absolutely cannot wait." Well, mostly. It was hardly enough information to be any bit convincing, but enough to be able to gauge just how that person might react. Their cooperation wasn't necessary for her to continue on as planned... but seeing just how committed they were to maintaining status quo was a good start.

Silence.... "I understand. However, it is against protocol for you to be here. I can escort you back to the lobby if you'd...." Punctuated by a sigh in return for hers. ".... Actually, whatever I say, you're not going to be leaving until you find him, are you?" Prior knowledge? Ah, only by someone who had kept track of her hospital escapade up till now! But he sounded different from the person in the office, whatever happened to that guy anyway?

Only for the little girl to blurt out her thoughts from the safety of Amarante's side. "Of course not! Miss Bunny can't give up so easily! Doctor Scarlet's counting on her, right? So you can't get in her way of true love!" Cheesy to the point that even her friend starts burying his head in his sleeves. Not like the petulant girl cared! "Besides, you're supposed to be caring for him too, right? Right?" The only response she got was another sigh, but enough to make her retreat and shut her mouth. For now.

But elsewhere, pigtails bouncing with every skip, someone turns up at the coffeehouse. Yes, this was the place, for getting coffee for a friend after a day of exploring! Humming a little tune and squeezing in through the door, a girl with a plastic bag tottered over to the counter. Oops, the top of her head did not even reach up to the counter! No matter, some energetic waving should do. "Haaai, haaai!" she called, standing on tiptoe, just high enough for the tip of her nose to peek over.
PostPosted: Tue Jun 02, 2015 7:18 am

The juxtaposition between the attempt at maintaining status quo and the quick shift to audible exasperation left Amarante with quite the wide-eyed stare. Eventually she tilted her head to one side, relenting to a lazy smile as she expressed her thoughts over the problem at hand. "You don't have to help me." She knew it wouldn't be that simple; that not dealing with her would likely incur punishment as well. But why couldn't it be? It'd be far more of a hassle to deal with her than to just leave her be, after all. And when there seemed to be a far more important issue to be attended to, too! Planting her hands upon her hips, any sassy thing she might've said was negated by his acknowledgement of that very fact. Neither of them said much of anything about meeting each other, and a mostly futile struggle for privacy should've helped, but... still, somehow everyone knew. Hands that had been firmly at her hip all of a moment previously found themselves anxiously playing with the soft tendrils of hair she'd styled so differently that day. "Then, you understand. So..."

That poignant moment of understanding was soon disrupted by further romantic proclamations. Which she felt obligated to agree with, regardless of how cringeworthy they might be found. "Th-that's right!" Should she have been embarrassed that her enthusiasm resembled that of a child's so closely? It didn't seem to matter, anyway, as she soon had the balled fists and determined look in her eye to match. "We don't..." It was a lot, wasn't it, to assume so much of him too? She hesitated to speak for more than just herself, but she'd already long since decided on fully trusting him anyway. "We don't break our promises so easily. And so..." One last sigh, and she made her plea; vulnerability showing upon her face and in her unsteady stance. "I have to help him. I have to. Please understand."

In a different area of the emotional spectrum entirely, a momentarily muddled Mira didn't know what to make of the racket she was having trouble locating. "Who is--" A look to one side, with nothing to be found. "What is--" A look to the other side, with the same lack of a result. "...Huh?" Finally looking down, there was recognition in her eyes as she leaned back to take a look at the girl. "I see. It's you! What can I do for you today?"

Got to deal with the mess, got to deal with trespassing visitors too. The day could not get any worse, could it? So to save himself the headache, he turned back to the door. "Then you're in the wrong place. Or, technically you went through the right door, but the door leads to the wrong area. You'll have better luck on the third floor, that's where he went last." A pause, like hesitation. "Though I'm not sure how you got into the building without a staff member, you'd probably want to leave as soon as possible. We're in the middle of cleaning up, as you probably could tell from outside." Another sigh. "Third floor, last door down the corridor, or actually just follow the dripping mess on the wall there. No one's cleaned that up yet. Afterwards, please try not to loiter any longer, thank you." Off he goes, back into the dark corridor.

"...... He's awfully helpful today." Sure, the kid had to comment, both coming out from their hiding spots. "Eh, I didn't know he's nice. Looks so scary."

To be interrupted by another patient, who pulled down his face mask to speak. "That was the last place the doctor went to, therefore he would still be there. And by extension, the room should still be in the same place as it was when he entered, therefore the directions will be the same." And back to covering his mouth and not speaking. This room must be for the mental patients, clearly.

"Ah... Is the coffee auntie here? I got a special delivery for her." She pushed the plastic bag onto the counter, trying not to let it fall back and drop on her head. "It's really special! But can you keep a secret, auntie? Don't tell her it's me? Please?" For a secret, she sure was giggling a lot. Hopefully the plastic bag did not contain a prank or anything, what a nice surprise to be waiting for her when she got back. "Oh! And um, can I have one cup of that sweet coffee. You know, that really cold one with extra sugar. Da bao, please, I gotta get home before people notice I'm gone." Onto the counter goes a handful of money, too.

Expecting a full response to the emotional quality of her words was never really a consideration when said words had come out, but to be both assisted and brushed off with such swiftness was something she was unused to. Opposition was so much easier to handle, somehow! But hesitant cooperation was still cooperation and needed to be acknowledged properly. So instead of her usual defiance she felt the need to muster up some of that awkward sense of regard, ears burning all the while as her arms ended up stretched down against her body as if meant as an awkward sort of shield that ended at her linked fingers. "...Thank you. I'll keep my intrusion and time spent here at a minimum." There might've been a tinge of guilt involved with just how long she'd been at that place previously but no need to mention that, even if he likely already knew. And there were no promises to not be a bother either, knowing that it was no use to attempt to establish herself as some sort of exception against protocol. It was a symbiotic relationship of mutual inconvenience, as dealing with such a place to get what she wanted was as much of a nuisance as the location considered she herself one.

Hands at the shoulders of the children as she turned around to take in the information relayed by the patient, a moment's surprise quickly settled into something else upon her face. "Ehh~" The feeling expressed was exasperation rather than disbelief, as she'd be willing to believe just about anything that place. "A puzzle box. I've willingly walked into a puzzle box. Again." And over and over she'd continue to fall into the same traps because the bait was just too good. Smart enough to know better, stubborn enough to push on regardless. Her mind had grasped on to the idea enough, at least, even if that hold was an unsteady one. "I think... I think I understand. Thank you." She'd still silently hope to not end up caught in an endless hallway of doors or some other similar nightmare, but her luck was such that even avoiding thinking about the unfortunate possibilities seemed like a good idea. With a bit of a nod, her attention went back to the children. "I'll do my best to help him, so... don't worry, okay?" And she'd meant it, but... to have said it in the first place! To be seen as a creature of emotions rather than a monster of nightmares, and to have what seemed like everyone knowing... it was almost too much. Her audacious nature was failing her; wanting to be the hero but embarrassed when given the chance. She didn't linger, both wanting to make the most of her time and to make her exit before she'd embarrassed herself too much. Back to darkness, and back to stairs!

Before Mira really had the chance to feel torn over doing as instructed or her loyalty to her boss, someone else had abandoned sulking over her lunch and approached in her stead. "She's not here right now, but I can make sure she gets it as instructed." Hopefully Miyabi hadn't totally terrified the girl, as in spite of her friendly tone it was very much obvious that she was far from being human. With a grateful nod Mira went about preparing the requested coffee. "Anything else?" She seemed to be lacking any awareness of any hesitance there might be concerning her appearance, too; tiny wings fluttering some as she stood there. It seemed someone else had felt self conscious, though, as the only evidence of her cat spirit companion was a faint mist rising from the top of Miyabi's head. Seemed that he'd haphazardly tried to mash himself in her hair only to make her even more strange looking in the process. She'd meant to be more helpful than terrifying but just how well that'd work was anyone's guess.

Even with the observer presenting his presence to her already, the cameras still lighted her way back down to the third floor, with the same stoic watchfulness. But hey, there was no more scruffy fellow to yell at her on her way, wasn't that great? ... He had somehow vanished too, didn't he. And for some reason the responsible warden had as well. But no matter! Time was of the essence, and there was a prize so precious just in reach!

And what did anyone know, the third floor corridor had windows. Large enough to have the sunlight outside leaving gaps of yellow in the otherwise black, punctuated with that same sick-smelling glop plastered down the opposite wall, floor and ceiling, winding loops around and around, a yellow and black spiral. All with a doorway at the end, blown onto the floor of that room by some unknown force and dripping with yuck. Well, the room was still there, as the patient had said. Hopefully it would not be moving any time soon, that logic might not hold up if it did.

Who is this pale auntie? Must be the coffee auntie's friend that used a lot of facial cream! Maybe one day she could get enough face masks to make her face as white too, but she should put that thought aside for now. "Okay! Just remember, it's a surprise! And tell her to follow the instructions on the tupperware before opening it." Grinning, she pulled the bag down from the counter and pushed it into the pale auntie's hands. "Okay, nothing else! ....." Sure, nothing else, with her eyes trying not to look at those flapping things, how did that work? Ah, don't look, it's rude! And if she stayed any longer, someone might get mad. "N-Nothing else! I just da bao one coffee, can already."
