Well that turned out to be easier than expected. Kiyoshi found himself looking at a scroll detailing the god Balder, who was slain because he was invulnerable to everything except mistletoe. After the trickster god Loki discovered this, he made a missile out of the stuff to slay Balder. This of course, was elementary in warfare. Find a weakness and exploit it. One couldn't be expected to hold back against an enemy if they knew his weakness. There was no room for honor or mercy when dealing with enemies, so it was good that this depicted that. The gods after all, were just doing what they expected humans to do as well. To act like the gods was the best thing any human could hope for.

Well that scroll was useless aside from that small blurb about Balder and his death. While he was looking around for another scroll to copy, he thought about his own attitude towards his fellow students. Was he expected to find their weaknesses so he could one day murder them when they weren't expecting it? Would they be planning the same thing regarding him? It was something he was unhappy thinking about. Of course most students were probably already planning his demise as it was... and that was not good for him. He would need to figure out what made them tick so he could easily dispose of them when the need arose. They wouldn't catch him unawares!

The next scroll related to Bragi, the god of poetry. It was an interesting subject for Kiyoshi, because he had never been really good at that particular art. Perhaps he should take it up, because it would make him far more cultured in the eyes of the village. But of course he wouldn't be nearly as powerful in combat if he was taking time to learn how to write poetry. If he did that, he'd probably end up writing greeting cards and other things. Then he'd end up making flower arrangements, and everything that had been put into him would have been for naught. Regardless, there was more to the scroll, so it was time to stop mulling over his nightmares and start learning again.

Well it was hard to finish this exercise when his mind kept wandering. Perhaps he did in fact have to branch out and be more than just a killing machine like the priests told him to be. Certainly Surtur was more than just a large fiery brute, he was also a leader of an entire group of warriors. Not to mention he controlled an entire plane of existence. So perhaps it wouldn't actually be that bad for him to be a bit more cultured. If that was the case he could manage to be a spy as well as a diplomat, and perhaps then he would make Surtur proud in the end. Still, combat capability came first, and he had to finish this so he could get back to combat training.

The scrolls were not very much help in showing off why poetry was good for a noble spirit, but neither were they able to tell much about the god Bragi. For one it was said that he was a son of Odin and an opponent of Loki, which served him just fine. Of course, he wished there was a bit more information on what he recommended in terms of poetry. Having a god of poetry instruct you in how to write it would be better than anything else. Or course if you disappointed that god, you would definitely be in trouble. Then again if you disappointed any god of any pantheon you'd probably be in trouble if they chose to act against you. That was the peril of being a mortal when you were dealing with gods. They could smite you at any time.

Kiyoshi figured that it was time for him to take care of things. He tried to get everything together, but just as he did he managed to spill the ink on the floor. Panicking, he did his best to clean it up before it made a huge mess all over the temple floor. The priests were oh-so-strict about keeping the place clean for visitors. At least he hadn't spilled it on the scrolls, which was a stroke of good luck. Still, it set him back ten minutes or so while he tried to erase the fact that he had made a mistake. It was odd to think that he had spent all this time working on copying scrolls to gain knowledge, but he felt that he was somehow wiser from it. Even so, his job wasn't complete yet.

Finally he was finished. All the scrolls were away, all the pens were in their proper places, and the ink was safely far away from the scrolls so it couldn't ruin them. Even though he had learned a lot, Kiyoshi knew that he had a lot left that he didn't know. Wisdom and knowledge weren't gained overnight after all. He was still young, and right now he needed to find another training regiment before going to class. Surely one of the priests was awake that could teach him something helpful.

Seeing that no one was around at the moment, Kiyoshi took it upon himself to do a bit of strength training. He had done some the night before, but it was best to get it done now before class started so he was in top shape. Since he had done push-ups last night, squats were the obvious choice for right now. He could always do more push-ups later. He got in position against a wall, knowing that this would most likely be something that he regretted later. Still, his beliefs didn't allow anyone to be weak regardless of the outcome. It was time to literally test the strength of his muscles.

Immeditatly right out of the gate he failed to keep himself up against the wall. It appeared that he was more tired than he had realized from last night's light training session. He must have been more out of shape than he realized. But that wouldn't deter him, since he still had to complete the training unless he dropped unconscious in the middle of the temple. And wouldn't that be a laugh if he did! Not that he would be laughing, but the priests would as they toasted sake at his funeral rites to a complete failure of a student. But he swore that he wouldn't end up that way, so the only alternative was for him to work harder so that something like this wouldn't phase him.

It seemed that physical pursuits were not kind to Kiyoshi this morning. Already he had failed twice, without even managing to hold on for a minute. That was no way to live! He had to be stronger and tougher than this if he was going to survive his first day of classes. That fact still worried him, even after all he had done thus far. The students were no doubt bigger and tougher than he was, which meant that he had to bulk up quickly if he was going to survive against them. While it was unlikely that he was going to be fighting to the death with them on his first day in class, it didn't hurt to come prepared for a fight.

Now he was cooking with gas. He had managed to hold himself up for over a minute, and now he knew the hard part began. His legs were already straining to hold him up, but he didn't care. All he wanted to do was get through this challenge without any more difficulties. He knew that wouldn't occur, because if it was that easy it wouldn't be a challenge at all. Instead it would be a cakewalk, and that wouldn't help him out in the long run. Kiyoshi wondered for a moment why they called it a cakewalk, because in his mind walking over cake would be a sloppy mess, and as such it would seem quite difficult.

Two minutes had gone by in this attempt at doing squats. He felt terrible, but knew that this was what was required if he wanted to get stronger. A weakling would get tired easily, and in combat that was like digging your own grave. Actually digging your own grave sounded like a lot of work, so perhaps he would do that as a training session later. It couldn't be all that bad for his muscles in all honesty. Of course it would also seem pretty strange, and he would end up being vulnerable against any shinobi that used earth-based jutsu. This might have been the fire nation, but that didn't mean that they only used fire in combat.

It appeared that two minutes was his limit. While he had managed to stay up for quite a while, he had done poorer than he would have liked. Three minutes was a pretty good time for someone who didn't do squats much, but it still wasn't great. Most ninjas could probably do a hundred times what he had just did, and laugh at him for how much trouble he was having. If he ever managed to get stronger than this, he would have to remember what he did wrong here. After all if you wanted to go places in the ninja world, you had to know where you had been already. To forget your heritage would be like forgetting how to breathe, and opened you up to all kinds of mental problems in the long run.

Well that went worse than before. He felt like he hadn't even managed to get himself off the ground this time before he fell again. it was pitiful, absolutely pitiful. Kiyoshi was sure that somewhere up in the heavens the gods were laughing at how pathetic he was in comparison to them. But this was no time to lose heart; he still had a lot of time before he could quit, and a lot of health left. If his heart stopped midway through, so be it. The squats may have been hard, but the training he had to do in the near future would be much harder. Jutsus were much more complicated and much more tiring than any physical activity. They were certainly more difficult than these elementary physical exercises.

One minute down, an infinite amount to go. He had previously managed to complete two minutes without any issues, so he was shooting to break that training record now. While he was already halfway there, he felt like he had been squatting there for an eternity. His legs were burning, but this was nothing compared to some of the pain he had felt in the past, and nothing compared to the pain he would feel in the future. Whomever his teacher was in the academy, there was no way he was anything but harsh. No doubt facing him would be like facing down Surtur himself, and that was a terrible pedigree to hold. He had heard horror stories from the priests of their own academy training days...
