"They should be here soon," Maia mused, and went to check the picnic basket. "He seems like a nice guy, though. I liked him. Very polite."

"Very polite, but very weirded-out by us," Toby added. "I haven't heard a bad thin about him yet, but Dari's obviously biased."
"Yeah, me neither," Lori agreed. He'd gotten all of the weird questions, though.
Just then Dari's car pulled up to the curb at the front of the house.
"Are you ready?" he asked Cody, peering out the passengers' window. "It looks like everyone's already here."

"Only because Toby questioned him like he'd be cleaning his gun if Cody didn't bring Dari home by curfew," Maia informed the two guys. She was grinning.
Luca smirked and looked over to Toby. "When's curfew?" he asked.
"Ready," Cody confirmed. "Your brother, his girlfriend, and Lori and his boyfriend? This'll be fun."

"I did not! He didn't even know I had a gun!" Toby said, and then after a moment of thought: "You'd already made tea!" He turned then to Luca. "Generally not 'after two days' but what can you do? It isn't exactly conventional."
"We're human, right?" Lori asked. He avoided mentioning the "l" word just yet. That was for Dari to tell Toby, not him.
"Right."
For the first time, Dari felt a little pang of worry. It would be alright. His family would behave.
"Lori and his fiance," he said with a little smile, and then gave Cody's hand a squeeze before getting out of the car. "I wanted to bring you to the lake but Maia beat me to it." He took Cody's hand then as they headed up the walk.
"Oh look," Toby said, peering out the window, "They made it."

"I wanted to meet him," Maia defended, and smiled. They were both at fault for scaring Cody, weren't they?
"You are bringing me to the lake," Cody assured him as he climbed out of the car and took Dari's hand. "I'm really looking forward to meeting your work friends."

"Well they're friends-friends too. We just happen to have met at work," Dari said. Then it came time to say 'hello' to everyone. Dari smiled and waved, then went about formal introductions: "Cody, this is Lorien and Luca," he said, presenting each with an upturned hand.
"Lori's fine," Lori said, reaching out to shake Cody's hand, "It's nice to finally meet you! I've heard all about you." Really he wasn't what Lori was expecting, but hey, humans came in all different shapes and sizes. Really, what had he been expecting, he thought? The guy was a damned school teacher, and Lori loomed over Cody like everyone else in the world.

Cody took Lori's hand and smiled. "All good things, I hope," he said. "Its nice to meet you! Congratulations on your engagement!"
Luca took Cody's hand as well, shaking it. "Dari never stops talking about you," he said, looking between Dari and Cody. "Its nice to be able to put a face to the stories!"

"Always," Lori said with a nod, "and thank you!"
Dari fought hard against the heat at the tips of his ears. No. They were just being nice, nevermind the fact that he did actually talk about Cody quite a lot.
"So whose car are we taking?" Toby asked.
"We can seat five," Lori said, "or four and a dog." Rosie had her own seat belt apparatus to keep her safe in the car.
"Well it's better to bring two anyway, just in case," Dari said with a nod. None of them owned an SUV.

"Let's take mine," Cody suggested, looking to Dari. "Lori has room for everyone else." And they could spend time chatting alone, before they got to the lake. He kissed Dari's cheek.
"Don't worry, love. My college friends've got their ears full, too." He grinned and shook his head. He didn't seem able to hold a conversation with anyone without mentioning Dari lately.

Gah! Cody'd called him 'love' and kissed him! He saw Lori smile. He saw Toby raise a brow and smirk. Oh, please let this day go on without much embarrassment.
"You could come with us," Lori said, "It's a convertible." Plus they'd be safe from Toby and Maia parenting the place up.
"Awh..." Toby mused. Lori just laughed.

Cody blinked at the offer. Well, he hadn't expected that. At least they wouldn't be riding with Toby and Maia. "Alright," he agreed. "Going to have the top down?"

"Yes," Lori said, as if this was some kind of amazing and treacherous deed, "I'm afraid you'll have to sit with the dog, though. She doesn't do much. You're not allergic, are you?"
Already he was heading down the stairs. Toby helped Maia grab the cooler and nabbed his keys to lock the door behind them. The plan was to stay out all day. That should be plenty long enough to get a good read on Cody and Dari together.

"Nah, I'm good with dogs," Cody assured Lori with a smile. Dorms hadn't allowed anything more than fish, and his current apartment didn't allow pets, but he'd always liked dogs. He took Dari's hand.
"I've never been in a convertible with the top down," he said.
"Hey Toby!" Luca called, grinning at the werewolf. "I bet I can get to the lake before you."

"Me neither," Dari said, and smiled to Cody as they held hands.
"Hey, Luca!" Toby replied, entirely teasing, "Maybe don't challenge law enforcement to race you! Especially when they're definitely going to win." He offered Luca a smile as everyone started to get packed in. Dari held the car door open for Cody while Lori buckled Rosie in on the other side. The dog stopped panting to watch very carefully, as if she was somehow learning from the procedure.

"You know I'd win!" Luca replied, smiling at Toby.
"There's another first for us to share," Cody said, happily. He climbed in and sat next to Rosie, looking to Dari. "Come on," He said. "If they don't go -too- fast, we can chat."
