Suddenly from the direction of the house veranda came an excited squeal:

"Serenity!"

Laer had emerged from the house and spotted her longtime friend, and now she ran over and greeted her with a kiss to both cheeks. "It's been so long since you've visited!" she laughed. "Welcome back!"

Serenity laughed with her. "Thank you, Laer. I see there have been many changes here."

"Many, indeed," the olive-skinned woman replied warmly. She turned to Beren. "And Garrick, you look like Serenity's still taking good care of you."

He grinned at her. "As she always has."

Miyuki looked between the two adults, for a moment before pointing to Garrick, "I thought his name was Beren."

There was obviously something she was missing here but she wasn't quite sure what it was.

Garrick/Beren chuckled and put one hand on Miyuki's shoulder.

"It is," he winked at her. "In my first life, I was called Garrick, though my real name was Ruel. When I was reborn, my new parents called me Beren. Now I'm known as Beren or Garrick, depending on how long people have known me."

He gestured towards Laer. "She and I knew each other for a very long time in my first life, so she calls me by my first name."

Three names, now that had to be confusing. Though it sounded like he didn't use the "Ruel" name.

"So what should I call you?"

He grinned at her. "You can just call me Nineko. Just be aware that if someone's talking about Beren or Garrick, that's me. But if they say Ruel, then it's my son, Ruel. Earendil's father."

As if things weren't confusing enough.

"Oh... I remember him!" Miyuki replied, "I didn't get to talk to him a lot."

Probably because while introducing Miyuki to Ruel was fine, limiting contact to limit bad interaction became necessary to a point. Though Miyuki had to look between Daemon and Beren before deciding she would just figure it all out eventually.

"Somehow, that doesn't surprise me," Beren said dryly, glancing at his wife. "He's not the easiest person to get along with, and if he doesn't like something, he just comes out and says it. He's always been that way."

He smiled at her. "But I've heard he's getting better, so I'm sure that will change. When do you think you'll get to see him again?"

"After we're done visiting here, we're going to the capital, so we'll probably see him then," Miyuki told Beren, "And from there we'll head back to the Borderlands, but ada says we're not in any hurry because it's almost winter and trying to the Borderlands in winter wouldn't be fun. So we won't be back there until spring probably."

Or around there since elves had a more specific way of counting the seasons.

A slow grin spread over Beren's face. "Ah, then we'll actually get to see my grandson for more than just a little while," he said happily. "It's so hard to visit the capital, though we try to as much as we can. And of course, Earendil hasn't been there in such a long time ..."

He stretched then. His arms, back and legs were rather stiff from the flight, and he made sure to stretch out all the stiffness. Then he turned to Laer and Serenity, who were talking together excitedly (understandably, since they were old friends who hadn't seen each other in a number of years).

"Hmm," he mused. "I don't think those two would heard me if I talked to them." He turned back to Miyuki. "Shall we get some water? It's quite dry, going through the desert, even if you're flying. Or would you prefer to stay with Daemon?"

He grinned at the blond-haired scholar. He knew Miyuki was as much Daemon's great-granddaughter as his own, so he would bear Miyuki no ill will if she chose to stay behind.

Miyuki wasn't sure, she would like to go but she hadn't left her grandfather alone unless her parents were there and they weren't there. She looked between the two of them, but it was Daemon who waved her on.

"I'll still be here, and we'll have still have plenty of time what with the trip and all."

He was going to go with them of course, it was time he headed back home.

"Besides, you've been sitting trying the same technique for a while now, your legs are going to cramp."

It was Daemon who was teaching Miyuki more about magic sensing beyond just knowing if someone was there. It was knowing if they were there, how strong they were and who it was. Being stuck with elves gave him an advantage that Daemon learned for the decades of how to untangle so to speak the aura of one strong magic user from another. Elves might not seem like it, but compared to the majority of Gaia, it was like a magical melting pot of senses.

"Okay!" Miyuki nodded, "And then we'll try again."

Because she wanted people to stop sneaking up on her by accident!

Beren grinned and held one hand out to Miyuki. "Lessons with Daemon?" he asked cheerfully. "Teaching you about magic, then?"

He knew that Daemon knew a lot of things, but he also knew that Daemon knew more about magic than anyone else around. Of course, it was still a guess.

Taking Beren's hand, Miyuki nodded as she followed him inside to where the water was kept.

"Yea! I mean, most people know about aura sensing, but I never really had anyone really explain it to me and I get tired of having people sneak up behind me... and it's just interesting."

The idea one could tell a lot by one's magic was interesting, but magic in itself was interesting. Not that she was interested in summoning or setting things on fire, but it was just how something so intangible could become tangible.

"Great-grandfather says that in Gaia they learn different types of magic, but some people are more... intune? Inclined, for a type of magic over another. It's easier... to do one thing instead of another."

"Tired of people sneaking up on you?" Beren chuckled softly. "Well, I'm sure they never meant to do it. But you're learning to sense when they're around, by sensing the power that they have?"

That was something he'd always wished he could do. He could detect people because of his training, always keeping his eyes and ears and nose alert; but to sense people by feeling their power, strength, or magic approaching? That, he could not do.

Miyuki nodded, "Magic is like an aura, it's unique to each person, so ada would feel different from mommy. Great-grandfather also kind of said that the closer magic is to you the stronger it feels so I'm guessing you could use it to know how far away someone is from you?"

Somehow she understood that concept a lot better than hearing or not hearing things to get around without sight (though it didn't stop her from running into things).

"I'm sure you could, at least partially," Beren agreed as he led Miyuki into the shade of the veranda. "Though if someone has a stronger aura, they might feel closer than they are, and someone with a weaker aura be closer than they feel."

He opened the door and let Miyuki lead the way in.
