Wally walks out on to the stage as the lights fade down to a soft darkness in the Bistro.
"This one is dedicated to a pretty lady who's not here...at least not in person. It's by Johnny Cash, and it's one of my favorites."
A soft bass guitar starts to play in the background.
"If I were a carpenter
and you were a lady,
Would you marry me anyway?
Would you have my baby?"
Wally runs a hand through his hair, looking down at the ground as he sings, almost embarassed at the emotion in his voice.
"If a tinker were my trade
would you still find me,
carrin' the pots I made,
followin' behind me..."
He turns around as the sound of a soft violin cues up behind him, singing with his back facing the crowd.
"Save my love through loneliness,
Save my love for sorrow,
I'm given you my onliness,
Come give your tomorrow...."
He backs out of the spotlight a bit, and takes off his coat, dropping it on the ground behind him.
"If I worked my hands in wood,
Would you still love me?
Answer me babe, "Yes I would,
I'll put you above me."
A hand over his mouth as the violin answers him, and turns around again to face the crowd, still singing softly.
"If I were a miller
at a mill wheel grinding,
would you miss your color box,
and your soft shoe shining?"
He crouches down, as if he has no energy left, and finishes singing.
"If I were a carpenter
and you were a lady,
Would you marry me anyway?
Would you have my baby?
Would you marry anyway?
Would you have my baby?......"
As the song ends as softly as it began, he steps back out of the spotlight before any applause can be heard.
