Time for my next project! I'm thinking of adding some veterans to my army and to tie in with the rest of my WWII themed army I plan on making these chaps look like SOE / SAS operatives, complete with Denison smocks and berets instead of silly Cadian helmets.

My big question is, what kind of a special weapon and doctrine load out should I give them? I was personally thinking of demolitions, as a nod to their origins as a raiding force, but I'm not that sold on the idea just yet. Any suggestions?

Well, being what they were, concentrating on infiltration would make sense.

Though I haven't read through the new codex very much, so I can't really offer any direct loadout suggestions.

Though they could be fast moving units, too. Work them with dedicated transports or as rough riders, perhaps?

It would be cool, I think, to take them up as assassination type squads. Working to attack special or tough characters directly? Not exactly SOE/SAS representation, but it could be a representation of their raiding tactics in quick battle.

Give them that Venator, is that its name?
That buggy with a turret on the top, the awesome looking one.

I've been thinking about how they should get about the battlefield, I have a Valkyrie handy for just such a thing. wink

While the idea of them acting as a late war death squad, they are only human and in my eyes, pretty ill-suited for that task. Unless I give three of them sniper rifles. On the other hand, demolitions gives all models melta bombs, which makes them ideal for taking out enemy vehicles and Bastions in that blaze of glory.

While Venators are lovely models (Mel has been raving mad about them! sweatdrop ) I don't really see myself taking them for several reasons:

1. They are manned by Elysians, meaning that converting other crew more in line with my own army would be quite a bother, if not impossible due to Elysians being smaller than Cadians!
2. They are Elysian or drop army only, besides no rules are known as of yet.
3. Venators aren't transports, the rear compartment is filled with batteries and generators.
4. They are from Forge World and as such, very expensive! gonk

Hm. Melta weapons might be a good loadout for them however you plan on using them, huh? Well, if you plan on using them close up. Whether for hit squads or demolitions.

I'm going to gather some of the bits first, maybe start work on the legs, torsos and heads when I get them, maybe while working on the basics I'll get ideas on how to arm them.

I am toying with the idea of giving the regular lasgun vets slightly modified lasguns with silencers and a rail on top of the weapon sights as with the G36. Or I might just trim off the silly sights from their weapons completely and scratch build new optics out of some spare plastic rods. Their weapons will also be completely black most likely, so I'll skip adding a wooden stock and body to the guns of these chaps.

That sounds good. Personally I like the idea of reflex sites. But I wouldn't know how to model them that small.

Oh, also, it'd be cool to give them shorter lasguns, like the Steel Legion carry,. (:

It takes a lot of patience and a steady hand. Tweezer also help lots! xp

Maybe I'll build scopes, reflex sights, while perfectly fitting the subject, are perhaps a bit too fiddly. Though I do have some bits of clear resin lying about..

*Nod* I'd probably end up just sticking chunky scopes on to save myself a lot of irritation.

I am tempted to go all the way with them now, turning them into a special squad that doesn't just stand out from the rest thanks to a camouflage jacket and a fancy beret.

Well it would be worth going all the way, I reckon.

Especially for veterans, though I have been treating every infantry squad and unit as something special, it's been too long since I enjoyed the hobby so I plan on making the most of it whenever I can.

my plastic stormtroopers are running Melta Plasma its very versatile

Plasma guns are pretty expensive these days. sweatdrop

Maybe I'll go with meltaguns, or the good old grenade launchers. Though when going for grenade launchers it might be neat to model them onto lasguns as launcher modules. Maybe as rifle grenades. Or PIATs!

Choices choices choices! whee
