"River especially," Earendil murmured with a smile. "Though to be honest, I think it was more meeting Jess than aging that's making her settle down. I wouldn't be surprised if she's married within two years."
Yes, she and Jess were young, and Jess was younger than River; but that meant nothing, considering the fact that they were elves.

"For River most certainly it was meeting Jess, and like you I wouldn't be surprised if she married as soon as she reaches adulthood, you can see it."
Lin knew it was rare for people to be that certain right off the bat, but she couldn't but be in awe of River who just seemed to know that Jess was for her. Here she and Earendil had been walking blindly for who knew how long.
She paused as the food was set down and passed around. It made her wonder what the future would bring, things were changing a lot.

Earendil had to admit, he didn't know anyone who had known as early as Jess and River exactly whom they were going to marry. But he couldn't help but wonder if Miyuki was settling down simply because River was. The two girls had barely known each other at the beginning of the trip, but they had become fast friends, even to the partial exclusion of Amalirahc, who was still as young at heart as his age.
After supper, the tables were cleaned up and put away, and the yard was prepared for the guests to sleep. They took up a lot of room: so much, in fact, that some of them had to set up their tents in the yards of some of the plantation hands.
Over the course of the next few days, the children explored the plantation thoroughly, and Andarien seemed to disappear whenever he could, reappearing only at supper time in Sylvar's company. Amalirahc and Ivy, being both very young, entertained themselves in the way that only small children could, letting their imaginations lead them everywhere.
Earendil enjoyed relaxing with Lin in a non-formal setting, quite a change from their past several stops. It was nice to just be themselves, following their own schedule for the most part, not having to tell people where they were going or what they were doing. And he knew that Lin was enjoying her time getting to know her grandfather as well.

Considering she actually got to sit with her grandfather side by side, and got to spend time with Earendil in a relaxing way it was almost hard to remember that the children still needed lessons. So sometimes she had to rein herself in.
Fortunately Andarien seemed utterly enamored with the technology used on the plantation, that she would let him go off and discover how it worked. All the while pointing him into the direction of Shiro, because Shiro knew so much more about the physics behind how the machine works than she did.
Her grandfather was also a god send in a way, while his gift was just in Sight, he had been sent to a school for magic and had the basics education. He was capable of pointing Miyuki in the right direction for meditation for mages (the kind that Kara and Cindy had begun with River all those many years ago), and the basics on aura and magic sensing. So when Miyuki wasn't exploring she was listening to her grandfather talk about things she had never heard or thought of before.
This in the end allowed Lin to simply spend time with Earendil, or train... or just spend time with Earendil. Which was why she was leaning against him as she watched her grandfather explain to Miyuki magical basics. Where Andarien was, well he was probably with Sylvar again.

Sitting in the shade of a tree had never been so enjoyable to Earendil. Relief from the heat made it very welcome, and the fact that he could relax with Lin just made it perfect. They had no worries on their mind, they were in no rush, and they didn't have to worry about the children.
Fading was nearly over already, and winter would soon begin; but there was still another season after winter before they could really begin their trip north, so there was no rush to finish their visit here on the Plantation and head to Tor Karad. It was very pleasant all around.
Now, relaxing like this, holding Lin in his arms and running his fingers through her hair, he felt the world was perfect. He could tell that Lin was relaxed too, for once not worrying about their children - though she seemed to be watching Miyuki and Daemon.
He smiled down at her. "Penny for your thoughts?" he asked her, echoing the question that she so often asked him.

Lin chuckled, one knew he was spending too much time around Gaians when he started using Gaian idioms like that. She looked up at him and wondered what her younger self would have thought of this kind of life. It was the same, and yet a far cry from what she imagined herself doing when she grew up.
"I think... while the children might have talents for things we probably have little to no talent for."
It was something that occurred to her while watching Miyuki and her grandfather. Miyuki seemed to understand these magical concepts, it wasn't something Lin had ever been interested in, and certainly science was not her strong point, which was looking to be a strong point for Andarien.
Earendil was probably better than her in both regards but at the same time, in both ways, the things that Andarien and Miyuki wanted to dabble in were beyond what he had learned growing up.

Earendil chuckled and looked over at Miyuki. "You've got that right," he grinned. "I've never studied magic, other than to test my own limits. And the way Andarien talks about mechanical things ... even when we first got him the blocks and he was playing with them, he was the one correcting me on the proper placement of the blocks."
He shook his head incredulously. "The very picture of intelligence," he murmured. "Except in languages. Hard to believe it's the same boy."

"Well... languages require a different set of logic skills and memory," Lin admitted, "I'll be honest, I never did that well with science learning, but I did have to learn a bit of it like everyone else."
There weren't many people in her family that one could say were true learners in science and technology. She could probably name on her hand, anyone in the family who had anything to do with technology. The number was only a bit higher if she included people who could work something more complicated than a stove or light switch and she would still have fingers on her other hand leftover.
"Magic I understood, but it never captivated me, it's a lot of practice and a lot of focus and depending on the branch a lot of theory. It is, in it's own way a science too, but one that changes and flows with life and time."
She couldn't use other types of magic like the way Yue and Yukito could, and she only had two very basic gifts, one of which she barely remembered she had. The other more practical magicks she couldn't do... runes was just too boring and potions was more like science than magic, and she knew how well she did in that.

"I admit, I've never learned anything about what you call science," Earendil admitted. "I'm still not entirely sure what it refers to."
He was well aware that their worlds were different, and he wasn't sure he would ever get used to the things that Lin was always bringing up. He found it fascinating though - he loved to learn new things, and she was constantly giving him the opportunity.
"It kind of makes me wonder though if we might have a fight on our hands when it comes time to leave here," he added, thinking of Andarien's attachment to Sylvar. "And when Daemon returns to Gaia, we'll probably only be able to comfort Miyuki with the knowledge that she'll see him again when it's our turn to go."

Lin sighed, she hadn't thought of that, but it was true. Both children were in the element here with their respective mentors. Once they had to be separated it would be back to the lessons that didn't always quite fit. Especially for Andarien this was an issue.
"Maybe.... maybe I could ask Shiro to take on some of Andarien's lessons. The only person who could teach the one thing Andarien is good at would be Shiro... it won't make the idea of leaving going away but it might ease it a bit."
Goodness knows Andarien needed at least one lesson that he completely excelled at. She wasn't sure what she was going to do with Miyuki, but Miyuki wasn't as (as much as Lin hated to admit it) badly off as Andarien in terms of lessons, and her grandfather would go home until after they reached the Southland.

"That would be a good idea," Earendil agreed. "Or Luk, even. Luk knows quite a bit of the things that Andarien's interested in, he says that what with all the half-bloods in Caras Galadhon they've needed all kinds of inventions to make life easier."
He smiled ruefully. "Pity no one who can talk to Andarien about the mechanical workings of my ninako's palace is able to speak Common Elvish. Father does, though, and perhaps Andarien will be interested in Father's forges."

"And they also use gears and cogs for smaller things. I noticed the ones here are so far for larger machinery, which is probably why we hadn't noticed them before, it wasn't something we were going to look at."
The first time Earendil had seen a gear was at Caras Galadhon, but those were for smaller objects and precise movements.
"The ones at Caras Galadhon, the ones we saw anyways were for luxury items, music boxes and the like... probably toys..."
She wondered if the smaller gears and things were used for anything practical like time keeping.
"Though... Andarien might enjoy the forges..."
She knew Ruel could make amazing things, but he was still at times hard to handle and because he was slowly learning to deal with people different than him, hard to read.

Earendil suddenly looked very thoughtful, even distracted. "I hope Father behaves all right," he said anxiously. "He's so unpredictable ... and the last time I saw him, we had an argument. He was still under the impression that I would never ask you to marry me, even though we had already sort of talked about it ..."
He sighed. "He knew I was going to. I'm still anxious about how he's going to act. I don't want Miyuki and Andarien to get a bad impression of him."
So far, he had no idea what Miyuki thought of Ruel. Of course, so far, Ruel had never been introduced as her grandfather.

Lin nodded, she also assumed that it would never occur to Ruel that she would have asked Earendil if he hadn't asked first. Of course it wasn't common for women to ask (though it did happen on rare occasions).
"We'll deal with it when it comes, probably best idea is to reintroduce them to your mother first."

Earendil laughed aloud. "Mother is going to be positively giddy," he grinned. "Two more grandchildren - and yes, she knew Miyuki already, but not Andarien, so that's going to be a great surprise - plus, Daeron has fallen in love ... and if I'm not mistaken, Iorlas truly is taking that talk to heart, and is allowing herself to fall very much in love with him as well."
He chuckled again. "However Father reacts, Mother will make them more welcome than they've ever been before. I just hope she doesn't spoil them too much."
