Kiyoshi Masaru HP: 9/10 CP: 4/4 MHP: 8/8 His first time out of the gate was already a failure. He felt abnormally weak for some reason tonight, and he wasn't sure why. Perhaps his body had spent too much time being idle... "It appears you are weaker than I thought. We will have to rectify that, especially if we are to send you off to war. Surtur will not protect the weak. He will purge the weak in the fires of war, just as he will in the end of times. So now, you will continue." Kiyoshi grunts in reply, knowing better than to speak when he had to devote everything to training. He would not be weak. He may have just been accepted into the academy, but he would not come in a suckling babe. He would be forged in the fires of his god, and trained to burn away all of his enemies until there was nothing left but ashes in his wake. Push-ups 1d20+Str, -1 hp per failure. DC 10 Success: 0/10

Kiyoshi Masaru HP: 9/10 CP: 4/4 MHP: 8/8 As he continued, his muscles seemed to adjust themselves to the burdens being placed upon him. He was by no means doing well yet, but he was definitely doing better than before. "Do not forget our way. The pain you experience is nothing more than the burning away of your weakness. One day you will be like us. You muscles will be strong, like the steel that is forged in Surtur's mountain. Your body will be unbreakable, like the mountains that make up his kingdom. Your will will be like his great sword, able to destroy anything that opposes it. You will be a weapon of war, just like your father, and his father's father, and his father before him." Kiyoshi listened intently, trying to keep himself from losing focus. Focus was the key. Focus was everything. Lose focus, lose your life. That was what had been hammered into him since he was old enough to stand on his own. Push-ups 1d20+Str. DC 10 Success: 1/10

Kiyoshi Masaru HP: 8/10 CP: 4/4 MHP: 8/8 His muscles screamed at him again as he temporarily slipped on the stone floor of his temple. He quickly righted himself, continuing to do push ups. Of course, he didn't escape the watchful eyes of the priest. "Weak, that's what you are. Do not blame yourself, for it is to be expected at such a young age. Still, you will be expected to work harder than ever before now that you have reached the age of ten. You will be entering the academy, and you are to be our prototype of a new breed of warrior. If you succeed, we shall present you to the council and the organization as a whole flourishes. If you fail, we shall simply try again with another child. You are expendable, remember that." Kiyoshi Masaru HP: 8/10 CP: 4/4 MHP: 8/8 Expendable. Worthless. Replaceable. Those were the words that had been used to describe him since he was old enough to begin his training. There was no missing that message. He was a tool, like the mighty sword of Surtur. He was not a giant, but he could do his will. He could be that mighty force in the world. "Quit daydreaming! What did I tell you about losing focus? The days to come will be harsh and unforgiving. But you shall continue. You are our best tool... Our most powerful weapon in this struggle. You are like a piece of hot iron. A potent weapon as is, but still requiring the power of the forge to be truly deadly. Your schooling will be your time in the forge, and when it is over you will be wielded by this village. Do not forget that." Push-ups 1d20+Str. DC 10 Success: 2/10

Kiyoshi Masaru HP: 7/10 CP: 4/4 MHP: 8/8 Another failure. Internally, he was screaming at himself. There was no reason for him to be this weak. He was supposed to be stronger. He had to be stronger. He had to be bigger. More powerful. Able to crush those threatened the village. "We are in a state of war. Enemies exist everywhere we look, even in our own village. We are expected to show our support by destroying all those who would harm us. Regardless of personal feelings, we must ride to the horizon, burning everything in our path like a desolating storm. We will burn the world to cinders and remake it, just as our forefathers did eons ago. That is our way. Do not forget it." Push-ups 1d20+Str. DC 10 Success: 2/10

Kiyoshi Masaru HP: 7/10 CP: 4/4 MHP: 8/8 He continued working, making himself focus more on the words of the priest than his own struggles. It seemed to be working, seeing as it was getting easier to continue on. Nothing would stop him... nothing except the word of his instructor. "Good. Continue working. You are far more adept at this than I gave you credit for. A year ago you would not have lasted this long. But do not grow overconfident. You may have improved, but you are far from perfect. You have a long way to travel, and pretty soon you will be a completely different man. You will look back and not even recognize yourself. Take heart and realize what you've become, but do not lose focus." Push-ups 1d20+Str. DC 10 Success: 3/10

Kiyoshi Masaru HP: 6/10 CP: 4/4 MHP: 8/8 He faltered again, slipping on the smooth stone and hitting the floor with a dull thud. His head rang for a second, but he quickly collected himself and pushed himself up so that he could continue training. The pain was intense, but he had felt worse before. It was better than training with some of the guards after all. "Good. Work through pain. Do not ignore it; accept it and will yourself through it. Though your body may become broken, as long as your will is strong the fire in your soul will stay lit. It is that fire that will burn away your enemies." Push-ups 1d20+Str. DC 10 Success: 3/10

Kiyoshi Masaru HP: 6/10 CP: 4/4 MHP: 8/8 The pain in his head seemed to subside, even though he was less than halfway through the training. He was covered in sweat, as was normal for anyone who entered the temple. The large braziers in the room kept it at a sweltering ninety degrees, which was perfect for any devoted follower. It was not however, good for training in. "Faster! You are getting slow in your complacency. You need to not only be strong, but quick as well. If you are slow, you are just as vulnerable as if you were weak! Strength is nothing without speed! Speed is nothing without strength! You need both to survive." Push-ups 1d20+Str. Kiyoshi Masaru HP: 6/10 CP: 4/4 MHP: 8/8 Halfway done. He had made it halfway through the time allotted. Normally he only made it to three-fourths of the way through, and he was feeling quite tired by now. In the back of his mind a voice told him to stop... to give up. It had always been there, trying to hold him back. He had never listened to it, never once asking why it existed. He assumed that one day it would vanish like smoke when he was stronger. Vanish like the memories of all of the nations he would burn to cinders when the time came. None would stand against him or the village if they posed a threat to it. Push-ups 1d20+Str. Kiyoshi Masaru HP: 6/10 CP: 4/4 MHP: 8/8 There. It was getting far easier now that he had hit his stride. The words of the priest faded away, his mind entering some form of focus. Perhaps it was adrenaline, perhaps it was some form of delusion brought on by the heat... but it didn't matter. Pressing forward, regardless of consequences was all that was important now. Everything was clear for once. His mission, his duty, the reason for his existence was clear. He was a tool, and he was required to be sharp at all times. To become dull would be against everything he had been taught, and what he had been taught was all he knew in the world. There were no other paths. Push-ups 1d20+Str. DC 10 Success: 6/10

Kiyoshi Masaru HP: 6/10 CP: 4/4 MHP: 8/8 Something had to be blessing him... some force had to be acting on his behalf, for he was feeling great even though he had been doing push-ups for a while now. His muscles were starting to ache, but he paid them no mind. After all, he wanted nothing more than to serve his god well. Sure it was something that most people considered crazy, that there was a ten year old zealot running around, but he didn't care. It was all he knew. While others were out having fun, he was training for the future. This was all he knew, and all he cared about. Push-ups 1d20+Str. DC 10 Success: 7/10

Kiyoshi Masaru HP: 6/10 CP: 4/4 MHP: 8/8 He could feel the time ticking down as he continued his push-up regiment. The braziers around the room were getting rather dull, but that was expected. Most of the problems occurred when his adrenaline gave out or his focus broke. Sure he was doing well now, but he had been taught that overconfidence ruined even the best ninjas. Therefore it was paramount that he kept his mind on track and away from everything else. If he was doing a good job, and not overconfident in his abilities, then he would no doubt be blessed by Surtur. Surely he had done something right in his eyes? Push-ups 1d20+Str. DC 10 Success: 8/10

Kiyoshi Masaru HP: 5/10 CP: 4/4 MHP: 8/8 Overconfidence had definitely gotten the best of him. He slipped again on the stone, his lack of focus causing him to hit his head on the floor. He groaned, just as the priest began chuckling. He was now well aware of how tired he was, but he refused to quit. If he was going to enter the academy, he was going to have to be in top form. Of course he hadn't even had one day in the academy. He assumed it was something awful, like daily beatings to raise a person's toughness and torture to make them mentally tough. Surely that was standard fare to harden children into ninjas? Push-ups 1d20+Str. DC 10 Success: 8/10

Kiyoshi Masaru HP: 5/10 CP: 4/4 MHP: 8/8 So close. He was so close that he could taste it. He didn't want to get overconfident like before, because that would lead to a disaster. Still, it was interesting to think about the future while he was doing his push-ups. Power beyond his wildest dreams would be his, and all in the service of his country. Enemies as far as the eye could see... and all of them brushed away like ash in the wind in the face of his ever-burning fire. That was the ever-present truth that he had been taught for a long time.
