Cody snuggled against Dari as he sat on the couch. "I have a confession," he began, as the previews started playing. He didn't want to put stress on their relationship or scare Dari away. "But I don't want it to upset you, alright? Promise not to get upset?"

Dari used the remote to skip through each preview. He set it down when Cody spoke. Uh-oh. This didn't sound good.
"I...you know I can't promise that. I can promise to not react outwardly?" That was a little bit of the logician in him. He couldn't say what his emotions would do!

That didn't sound promising. Cody continued to snuggle against him. "When I was seven, my parents told me not to stay up and watch these movies about monsters--you know, werewolves, frankenstein, giant spiders... They were old and cheesy but I stayed up one night watching them and had nightmares for a week afterward. My parents never mentioned it, but I'm sure they knew why I climbed into their bed that night."

"I'm sure they did," Dari agreed. He went back to fast-forwarding, but he knew that wasn't what Cody had originally planned to say. Maybe it'd come later. He should just learn to promise silly things like that. "Scifi doesn't do that to you, though?"
He got to the opening credits and returned the snuggle with Cody.

"No, I've always been interested in aliens. My dad tried to get me out of that, he thought it was a phase." he shrugged and wrapped an arm over Dari's shoulders. "I had this book when I was little that'd show me constellations that were in the sky in certain areas. It glowed in the dark. I loved it until it fell apart. I think that's what got me looking up. I guess it is kind of weird, though. The people I've met that do believe act like aliens would hurt us. And then there's me."

"Well that's good old humanity for you," Dari said as he leaned into Cody, "Anything different is bad and probably dangerous. Then they wonder why aliens don't come here." Not on purpose anyway.
"You know, there's an app that will show you where the constellations are. Kind of like looking through a magic window, just it's your phone."
Oh look, the astronauts! Obligatory, of course.

Cody shook his head. "I've always hated that line of thought. Things that are different are bad. Its caused wars and people's deaths. I think we could learn so much from things that're different from us, Dari. Technology, new ways of life, how to appreciate things we have."
He took out his phone from his pocket. "Really?" he asked. "What's it called?"

Dari named the app casually and then decided to add his own two cents into the conversation.
"Between humans I do think it's absolutely ridiculous, but it's completely counter to everything about aliens. All of the efforts humanity has made to contact extraterrestrial life have been intelligent and innocent and hoping to spread knowledge and converse. But the idea of aliens coming to us is terrifying. We forget that, to the aliens, we're the aliens, so well-intentioned or not we'd better hope they're nothing like us, which is apparently the most terrifying part, because what is an alien without human morality?" Hm. That was a pretty large double-meaning metaphor, wasn't it? It was true at least.

"Well, they'd have alien-morality," Cody suggested. "I don't think human morality is all that great, though. We have laws, but every day there's something about someone getting murdered or someone doing drugs." He paused then, and looked to Dari. "It'd be kind of cool to see a giant alien creature, though. But according to movies, it'd eat us."

Dari smiled to Cody.
"Sure. If they need to eat. People make the assumption aliens are very humanoid, but why would they be? So few things on our own planet are humanoid, why would it be the same somewhere else?" For example, sentient fluid. "Anyway, if it's a 'creature' I highly doubt it came to us first."

"It'd be nice if they were humanoid formed, but I imagine most of them aren't. A cat alien, imagine. Or a planet of all dogs. Or maybe the stars themselves are aliens." He grinned at Dari. "I guess we'll never know."
He paused after a moment, and took Dari's hand. "You know, taking you to our mountain meant a lot to me. I knew you were special then."

That... wasn't exactly what he meant. Why did aliens have to be Earthly at all? Why would it be even similar? Dari just smiled, though and let Cody take his hand.
"It meant a lot to me too," Dari agreed. It had, especially when Cody said he'd never brought anyone else there, but it was only their second date. He had been taking a chance... and it'd worked. Did that mean it was even more special?

"I started having feelings for you then," Cody admitted. "I figured it was too soon to say anything, and I wasn't sure--I mean, crushes happen--" he was struggling. "I mean, I knew I liked you. Just not how much. And when I told you earlier, I just wanted you to know." He kissed Dari's cheek. "You're so special, Dari. So kind, generous and smart. And you appreciate the little things."

Dari smiled.
"That's when it started for me too. I thought it was too soon," he admitted. He definitely hadn't had a crush on Cody, but he wasn't about to tell the poor guy that. It had been real affection from the second date on, something deeper than what he felt for friends--perhaps not deeper, but very different. He turned then to capture Cody's lips and kiss him properly, albeit briefly. "You mean a lot to me, Cody. I look forward to our time together all week. I've just never been in love before. They say you'll know it when it happens..."

Cody was beaming. He smiled and kissed Dari again. "A week is too long," he complained, when he pulled away. "Are you free during the evenings when you get off work? We could do dinner--" he hesitated and looked to Dari.
"My mom always told me the best love comes as a surprise. And meeting you was one, a messy surprise." He gave Dari's hand a squeeze. "I don't know if that's always true. But I know I felt something I hadn't before."
