Well, looking at it, it's pretty clear now that it was his summon, implyng that Gai can summon turtles. Now, Gai's a ninja, as is Kakashi, and as are Kakashi's summon dogs. So does that mean that Gai's ultimate summon is the Naruto Versions of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles? Though a quick look at Ganbuta (sp?) would disprove the theory that the animal summons are necessarily ninja. Ganbuta's jacket, tanto, and pipe are all parts of the stereotypical image of a Yakuza boss. The way he tends to speak in sort of a boldly assertive way seems to back this up as well.
