"It sounds pretty miserable," Cody observed. "We'll go as tourists. It'll be fun! We might even see a seal or two. I hear there's usually a bunch on the jetty, but I never got to see one."
He looked to Dari and smiled. "I'm really looking forward to this part."

"We did see seals, yes," Dari said with a grin, "Plenty of seals."
They pulled into the supermarket parking lot and Dari turned to Cody.
"What part?"

"I've only seen them at the zoo. We'll have to look." He smiled at Dari, and then looked to the supermarket as they pulled into the drive way. "I'm looking forward to spoiling you."

"You've spoiled me enough," Dari said, and he did mean it. The mountain would have been enough. These secret excursions were just the icing on the cake.
"I don't think we need any more candy."

Cody smiled and, when they had parked, said, "I like spoiling. What do you think Maia has planned for that thing she invited us to?"
He laughed then, and shook his head. "Definitely not."

"Mm, knowing Maia? Cake. If we're staying in, anyway. If not, who knows?" Dari asked, "My brother got all of the cooking genes." He was trying to learn, though, to surprise Cody some day. "I'm assuming we're going to stay in, eat food, talk a lot? Maybe a game or two. I'd bet the third couple is Luca and Lori." Who, he realized, could just as easily be another heterosexual couple if you took their names phonetically.

"Cake?" Cody echoed, grinning. So cooking was sort of their thing, then? "So they cook a lot," he guessed. "And you're the artist of the family. Seems fair." He leaned over and kissed Dari's cheek. "I can't cook either," he admitted. "I can make box mixes and heat pizza up, but mom used to forbid me from venturing in to the kitchen with fear I'd set it on fire."
"Lori and Luca?" he asked.

Dari almost said 'Yeah, it's a fae thing' but smartly shoved it to the side and instead said, "Yeah, every night. My brother learned from our parents and Maia learned from him."
He got out of the car and reached out for Cody's hand.
"Yeah. Lori and Toby are good friends. Lori works with us. Luca's a librarian."

Cody took Dari's hand and smiled at him. "Well. If you don't mind eating boxed dinners, I think we'll get along splendidly."
"Another secret agent! Will Lori try to dad-mode at me, too?"

"Well I can make eggs and toast. And muffins now. Pancakes, pancakes too," Dari said, "So if you ever want to get fat for breakfast..." he chuckled slighty and shook his head.
"No, no. He's been a big help for me through all of this. He brought me to my first club." When they got to the market doors they were sized to fit one at a time, so Dari stepped aside to let Cody through to the carts.

"Tempting," Cody teased. "I can make cookies. Chocolate chip, naturally. So you'll get a bunch of those come holidays if my mother drags me over to help. She likes sending boxes of them to all our relatives."
Oh good, only one dad and one that'd helped Dari come out of the closet? He selected a cart once inside, and waited for Dari. "C'mon, we've got to find things you've never had."

"That's so sweet," Dari mused. Toby didn't have much family, but he'd bet they'd all be making cookies for the office come Christmas. "Do you celebrate Christmas, or...?" They could make Hannukah cookies, who knew?
"Let's head for produce first. I want to see if they have anything interesting. Then what, do you think?"

"Yeah, my parents are Baptist," Cody said. "Christmas and Easter are huge. Candlelight things for Christmas and sunrise services for Easter. Do you?"
"Alright! Maybe they have persimmons or something!"

"Oh wow." Intensely religious, then. "We celebrate the Christian holidays at home but of course at work we've got a little bit of everything. Sometimes friends will hold parties on the solstices and equinoxes." He shrugged.
Persimmons? Dari knew what they looked like but had no idea what they tasted like. "The weird fruit's usually on the back ends," he said, gesturing forward. He heard a text ring out from his pocket while he felt a passion fruit and reached in to get it. Were the wrinkled ones ripe or overripe?

"Like parties on midsummer's day?" Cody asked, curious. He selected a passion fruit from besides Dari and grinned at him. "Oh, and dragonfruit. I've it on good authority that these don't taste like actual dragons."
He heard the text. "Toby checking on you?"
