August 1O, 2O1O : Peach.
Peaches are stone fruits which come from the tree of the same
name. Many people associate peaches with summer, since they
come into season in May and are often available as late as
October. The tender, flavorful fruits are popular on their own, and
also in things like pies, preserves, and fruit salad. Most
greengrocers and stores carry peaches in season, because their
popularity leads to high consumer demand, and peaches are also
available in canned form year round.

August 11, 2O1O : Lime.
The word “lime” is used to refer to a large group of green citrus
fruits with a tart, intense flavor. All limes are in the citrus genus,
and they appear to have originated in Southeast Asia, along with
many other members of the citrus group. Limes are popular in
many cuisines, such as Thai and Mexican food. They are also used
to make mixed drinks, since the tart flavor often interacts well
with alcohol. Most grocery stores sell limes, and pure lime juice is
also available in many places.

August 17, 2O1O : Durian.
Known as the "King of Fruit," the durian is a tropical fruit rarely
seen outside of Southeast Asia. The durian, named for an
Indonesian word meaning "thorny," resembles an unripe coconut
with spines covering its thick, green rind. Infamous for its
strangely foul smell, the flesh of this fruit is nonetheless sweet
and delicious.

August 19, 2O1O : Banana.
The Cavendish banana is the most widely-grown banana
cultivar. Plantations devoted to this banana can be found in Latin
America, Africa, and Southeast Asia, and the bulk of bananas on
the shelves of Western supermarkets are Cavendish bananas.
Chances are reasonably high that you've seen a Cavendish
banana recently, because these bananas are ubiquitous, cheaply
available year-round in fresh form.

apricot can be recognized by its fairly firm skin, and it will be

and C. Apricots are also a good source of iron, potassium,
phosphorus and calcium.

August 21, 2O1O : Apple.
A Red Delicious apple is an American fruit unintentionally created
in 1880 from a chance seedling and cultivated extensively since
its introduction to the public in 1892. The earliest version of this
apple was a yellowish, round fruit, but changes in growing
conditions, fertilization and harvesting have turned the Red
Delicious into a more oval shaped apple with a deep red color. The
taste has changed as well and the apple that was once known for
its superior sweetness has lost some of its original flavor, texture
and general appeal.

August 22, 2O1O : Acai.
Acai berries are berry fruits from the acai palm, which is native to
Northern Brazil. The berries have formed an important part of the
diet of Brazilians and Native Americans for centuries, and began to
be processed and exported for general global consumption in the
1990s. Many health food promoters seized upon acai berries as a
“superfood,” because they are rich in a variety of vital and useful
substances. Health food stores and gourmet grocers carry Acai
berry products such as juice and frozen pulp.
