Durin' Roy's 8 years with Colorado, Avalanche developed a nasty, often brutal rivalry with Detroit Red Wings, who dethroned defendin' Cup champs in 1997 Western Conference Final, 2nd of 5 times that these two teams met in the postseason.

A proud Canadian, Roy represented his country at 1998 Winter Olympics in Nagano, Japan. Here, Roy stops Sweden's Daniel Alfredsson in round-robin action. Team Canada failed to reach gold-medal game when Roy was beaten by Robert Reichel of Czech Republic in a shootout, n' then fell to Finland in bronze medal contest.

Roy's Avs climbed out of an 0-2 hole to dethrone 2-time defendin' Cup champion Red Wings in 1999 Western Conference semi-final. After losing first 2 games on home ice, Roy reverted to form, downin' Red Wings 5-3 and 6-2 in Detroit n' then shuttin' them out 2-0 back in Colorado.

On 10/17/2000, Roy broke Hall of Famer Terry Sawchuk's career victories mark (447) by toppin' Washington 4-3 in OT. 3 nights later, he was saluted by Sawchuk's son, Jerry, at a ceremony before Avs' game against Florida. City of Denver also got into act, declarin' 10/20 as Patrick Roy Day.
