So they both agreed that, if they were to travel, Malcom would stay behind. Placing an arm around the snuggling ginger Hal shifted to relax, "Understood." he murmured, "and just because you're okay doesn't mean I won't worry." And laid there, eyes closed as warm fingers slipped between his. "I will, don't worry. As for your question, I can't imagine it's that common, people are so few and far between that it may never happen again." he murmured. "Don't worry about it. Nothing bad will happen as long as I am here."

Momo yawned and snuggled in closer. "You are probably right." Hal's arms and warmth were doing the trick, Hal fell asleep happily curled up against his side. half an hour later, he shifted, moving to his back since it hurt less than sleeping on his side. his hand slipped out of Hal's as he moved, freeing the android to do as he'd promised. Tom was sitting outside under one of the cloth shelters that were all over the base. it was a place to sit outside while safe from the sun's rays. he was cleaning his handgun, something he did while thinking. he was deciding if they should expand or not. for now they were ok in size, the base was large, but he worried about housing. would they have enough to last them for years to come? what if their population grew? wouldn't it be better to start now than have to do a rush job later when the problem actually arose?

When the man shifted, the android slowly left the bed, not waking him up and moving around the curtains. It seemed no one was here, and only a select few were sleeping. Walking out he began to map the place, changing visions constantly to try and get a rough layout of the grounds, going back to normal when he spotted one of the men that had been there in aiding the fall of the, whatever they were called. Thugs. Scum. "Excuse me." Hal said softly. "I don't mean to interrupt. I'm Hal, I'm Monoki's personal android. Would it be all right if I asked you a few questions?"

Tom looked up, confused for a second as he pulled himself out of his thoughts. "Oh, right, Hal. nice to see you out and about," he moved over and motioned for the robot to sit next to him. "you're not interrupting a thing, i was just thinking. How's Monoki doing? better, i'd imagine, if you are willing to leave his side." he chuckled a little and finished putting his gun back together, "ask away. i assume Mama extended our offer to you by now, she was nearly running out of the meeting when we agreed to it, so you must be curious about a few things. i'll tell you what i can."

"Yes, he's much better, he told me I should go out and get some fresh air to clean out my filters of the smell of the medical bay." Shaking his head at the offer to stand, he instead offered his hand. "I was wondering if I could look at your crops. It intrigues me that you've managed to grow plants in this radiation filled atmosphere, so I'd really love to see how you accomplished it."

Tom looked at Hal curiously before taking the hand and pulling himself up. "Sure, i don't mind. it's actually quite something. we found some caves where the radiation isn't so bad. something to do with the sun and where they are located. anyways, it gets enough light to grew things without killing them." he lead the way to a thick metal door in the ground, "here, help me with this. it's heavy." he lifted it with Hal's help, a waft of hot wet air filtering up when they opened. "got water and everything, too. the earth shifted with everything that happened, opening up these caves." he lead the way down, "they are more vegetable gardens than fields, but go ahead and look around." they reached the bottom and he waved his hand, giving Hal permission to do as he liked.

Hal smiled, looking like an excited child as he followed. "Is it hard to maintain? I wasn't aware you could farm underground, but that would make sense, depending on how deep it is. The radiation would be filtered out by the dirt." And grabed the door, pulling on it and helping Tom open it, surprised by the warm air that clouded in front of his face. Waving it away he followed the man down, closing the door behind them to prevent radiation from entering. "Really? There is water down here? This is certainly a good location, then." stepping on the ground he looked at the rows of green, taking pictures. "Monoki would love to see this." he murmured, walking to the plants and kneeling down, looking at them. The android was quickly pulling out data from his files, comparing these plants and finding out what they were. They weren't exactly like the ones in his memory, they were smaller, but they were still doing exceptionally well. Standing he did this with every row, checking and looking, glancing at the row to glance over the rest and put them under the same data analysis. "This is so impressive, Thomas." he murmured, looking at the tomatoes.

Tom shook his head, "Wasn't me! I'm hopeless with plants, but my grandma had always been someone who loved to grow things. she experimented for years until she was finally able to breed plants that would be able to grow here." he shook his head and crouched down, "my grandfather was the commander at the time of the bombing and he was the one that pulled everyone together. it's because of them that everyone looks to me, but i try and delegate as much as possible. never a good idea to have everything riding on one person, you know?" he shrugged and leaned against the wall, "everyone pulls their own weight here and somehow we manage to do just fine. can't really argue with results."

"Those are the best sort of ways to run a compound." At least until people decided what they did was most important, judging by the historical facts that continuously repeated. "this this cavern feed the entire compound or do you have another? I am thoroughly impressed. Congratulations to your grandmother." And continues to look around, analyzing the budding blossoms of some plants before smiling at the spirals. The Fibonacci Sequence. It had been a while. "What other jobs are there here at the compound?"

Tom nodded, "there are two others, but one remains unplanted and we put all of our rotables in it so it can rest." he glanced around, "there are several jobs. come, i'll show you." he lead the way back up, listing off some of the jobs he could think of off the top of his head. "it's thanks to our grandparent's military training that we're so well off. we've people with all kinds of skills, unfortunately the thing we are lacking on is in technology. we can build most things like radios and guns, but technological things like computers and robots are beyond us. well, anything more than the basics." he shrugged as they stepped out into the sun. "but it's not like we are missing anything for that, either."

Hal listened as he followed. Two more, only one in use. That was still quite a lot of food. "Yes, I can't imagine this compound would have a need for technology, you seem to be doing very well without it." he commented, nodding and looking up, shielding his eyes with his hand. "Are all of you military, or are some of the people here once-travelers? How many people are there, total? Do the caves feed them all?"

Tom shrugged, "a lot of people came after the blast, but so many got sick and died fromt he radiation the population staid low. there aren't many travelers anymore, but a few come straggling in now and then. groups like those idiots are few and far inbetween. usually they accept our ways and live with us peacefully, but sometimes you get rebels." he sighed, "we welcomed them into the base, but they tried to take over. we were forced to kick them out." he stopped and looked at Hal, "it wasn't an easy choice, but you saw what they were like. we couldn't let them stay here. as much as i hated to, we had to force them to leave. to many people had been hurt or even killed because of them."

Those rebels really didn't seem like the kind into teamwork. "Does the farming feed all the people here, though? Are all the children being fed properly?" Why was Tom avoiding the question? That made the android worried, maybe this wasn't a good place for Malcom to stay at.

Tom grinned, "yes. everyone has enough food. we have to ration, of course, and anything extra is stored and canned to save it for times of need. Families with children receive rations first and we make sure no one goes hungry." he saw a group of kids playing in the shade of one of the buildings and smiled. "children always come first, they are our future so we have to make sure they are taken care of." he shrugged, "anything else?"

Families with children were fed first, that was good, Malcom could survive this. Let's see... Jobs, check. Farmland, check. Food, check. "How many people are in the compound? Certainly enough for you to store rations for dry seasons, I assume. Where are the living quarters?"
