"Well, I know the area around here really well," Sy grinned, "and I'm really good with a bow - I've been shooting since I could walk, so I'm told. And I love it, honestly I do."

For the first time, her smile faded slightly, and she looked over her shoulder at her brother again. "The only catch is," she added softly, "if I were to do that, I don't know what would become of my brothers. None of them can cook, leastways not so's people would eat it, and sometimes I wonder if they'd rather just keep buying new clothes than do their own washing."

Lin chewed on her lower lip, if it weren't so serious it would be funny.

"Maybe they don't know how to wash," Lin murmured softly, "Though I do imagine their work keeps them distracted...."

She also had to wonder what the brothers would do without their sister. After all, what would happen if their sister was the first to marry?

Sy giggled. "They know how," she confided to Lin with a wink. "They're the ones who taught me how to do it! Though I'm not sure how we all managed to eat before I learned how to cook. Neighbour taught me when I was still young. Maybe they just ate out all the time, or maybe the neighbour fed them too."

She laughed. "Ah well, like I said, I wouldn't have my life any other way."

Earendil couldn't help but chuckle softly. This girl reminded him somewhat of River: so cheerful that it seemed nothing would ever faze her.

"That's good to know," Lin chuckled a bit.

It was good Sy could find humour in all of this. Though even Lin found the whole thing just a bit amusing.

"I wonder how Andarien is doing," Lin murmured, the conversation had made time fly and she knew he had been a bit ify going in.

Sy and Earendil both looked over at Tanil and Andarien. Andarien had a bow in hand and was drawing the string, testing it. His arms were shaking slightly, and after a moment, Tanil shook his head and reached out to take it from Andarien, his eyes already on the bows on the wall, looking for another for him to try.

Earendil watched the exchange silently. "Doesn't look like it's going so well," he murmured apprehensively.

Sy was also watching, but a slight frown creased her forehead and she turned back to Lin and Earendil. "Who has been teaching him to shoot?" she asked them softly.

"Earendil has been, whenever we stop long enough," Lin replied.

Traveling made lessons difficult, and Earendil was the one to teach since he was probably the most qualified next to his brother to teach it at the moment.

Sy glanced at Earendil, then looked back at Andarien and Tanil.

"I suppose travel would make it difficult," she murmured distractedly. "Excuse me."

She left Lin and Earendil and moved towards the others. She spoke to her brother for a moment. He shrugged and smiled, and as Sy took over speaking with Andarien, Tanil came back to join Lin and Earendil instead of his sister.

"It's rare she asks to take over helping a customer, but I find it's usually best I allow it when she does," he chuckled. "Which leaves me to you. Is there anything else you need while you're here?"

"We were both thinking one or two dozen arrows while we're here," Lin explained, "A group of us are traveling around the continent, and it probably is best to get more arrows while we're here before continuing on."

Since this place was of high quality and who knew where they would end up next.

Tanil nodded. "Certainly. Please wait just a moment while I get some paper to write down your order."

With a smile and a bow of his head, he went back to the small counter to get something to write on and with.

Earendil took the moment to see how Andarien was faring now. He once again had a bow in hand, but this time Sy was changing his grip and his stance, not shy about how she touched him when she rearranged his limbs. There was a light flush on Andarien's cheeks, but he was listening to her intently.

Miyuki in the meantime was intently studying one of the quivers, as if she was thinking about something. She had one hand gripping a tail to prevent the rest of them from swishing around. The kitsune leaned over and tried to peer in, as if peering down at something despite the quiver being empty.

She had overheard her parents talk about more arrows but wondered how much a quiver could hold. A good amount, but one would run out eventually she figured. You couldn't have a bigger quiver it would be too heavy and cumbersome and no matter how many you put in, you'd run out eventually.

Thinking for a moment she pattered over to the arrow shafts and got a good look at them, and the pattered back over to the quivers. She kept doing this for a while, as she muttered something about energy, transfer, triggers and something about not practical.

Earendil was more worried about Andarien than Miyuki, since he was the one who needed the new bow, and so he didn't notice her odd behaviour. Very quickly, Tanil was back with a pad of paper and a charcoal pencil.

"All right, so just the basic information," he requested, preparing to write down the information. "Draw length, bow strength, type of fletches, type of arrowheads."

Earendil gave his information as quickly as the man had requested it. "Thirty two inches, sixty pounds, any, one and a half dozen broadheads and half a dozen field tips."

The man muttered to himself as he wrote it down, then turned to Lin. "Any for yourself?" he asked her.

Lin quickly gave her own information, but had a bit more trouble with the tips. She had only ever used field tips, since that was the type the clan that taught her used. So she wasn't sure if she would need other types or not for traveling.

As she was explaining this to Tanil, Miyuki seemed to have made a decision and whirled around to talk to her parents. Of course, she reasoned, a stone and as basket would make a good first experiment, but if she was right then she would want the real thing to experiment on when it was time.

She waited until her mother was done though.

Tanil assured Lin that she would indeed need more than field tips, as field tips were for nothing but target practice, and wrote down a few different types for her arrows.

When their business was concluded, the man looked over his shoulder at Sy and Andarien. Andarien was once again holding a bow, and he had an odd-looking arrow nocked: it was far longer than it needed to be, and had no fletches or arrowhead. Instead, it had ticks all along it.

"Ah." Tanil seemed pleased. "That must be the bow he's getting if she's measuring him for arrows. Excellent."

"Mom, ada," Miyuki finally spoke up.

Lin turned and noticed the gleam in her daughter's eye. That had her slightly worried and slightly curious because that was the same look Shiro (or even Andarien) got when an idea grabbed them.

"Yes?" she asked.

Miyuki gave her mother a foxy grin, "Can I have a quiver and some field arrows to experiment with. Maybe some that are suited to Andarien since I can't shoot?"

The first word out of Lin's mouth was "Whyyyy?"

Miyuki smiled widely and went into a long winded theory about magical energy and kinetic energy usage to trigger runes that were set up like a point to point system, along with something to help with storage. However she did go off on a tangent and did say storage might not be an issue if she could get the array to work and part way through Lin realized that her daughter was actually geeking out (over runes no less) and stopped her.

"In a way I can understand," she interrupted.

Miyuki blinked and pointed to an arrow, "I want to make that," she pointed to a quiver, "Be teleported back into that, after being shot from a bow. It's less arrow wastage that way."

It took Earendil a moment to realize what Miyuki was talking about, but when he did, he was impressed.

"If you could do that," he told her sincerely, "it would be extremely helpful. But I'd like to suggest one change ... rather than using Andarien's arrows, since I think it might be good for him to practice ... use mine. You can just toss the arrows if you need, and then if you can get it to work we can try it with me shooting them far."

They were taking a week's break in the town, yes, but now that Andarien had a bow (or would by evening, he was sure), he knew that it was important that Andarien practice.

And hopefully the young man (he wasn't really a child anymore after all) would enjoy it better than his lessons with Kaito.
