Rhea of course could understand why Lin didn't like flying lessons - though she herself did enjoy flying, she was an empath after all - and for the moment she was willing to humour Lin, though she also understood, as a teacher, that sometimes it was necessary to force an unwanted lesson.

She was with Lin doing archery while Whisper sat back and kept an eye on both of them. Of course, with Rhea being an adult now, she didn't worry quite as much about her mistress misbehaving or doing things that she oughtn't, but the two of them were inseparable regardless.

"You know, Lin," Rhea said, watching Lin as she shot an arrow, "you're going to have to learn to fly eventually. Even if you were to just start of simple, like flying to retrieve your arrows instead of walking ... it might actually make it easier, you wouldn't have to struggle so much in the snow."

That was something that she didn't understand - of course, being an elf, she had never had that problem.

Lin knew this was true, and she knew she should really follow Rhea's advice because if it were Vincent he would have kicked her off a roof by now. Lowering her bow, Lin sighed, not to mention the comment about the snow was also true. On a clear day like this it would be easier to fly than to trek through the snow where she would sink.

She had forgotten how deep the snow was around here, it was a wonder how she managed to get anywhere she was just a child.

"I suppose," Lin replied putting away her bow for a moment.

She really didn't know what the problem was, it wasn't like she hadn't fallen a hundred times before.

Rhea smiled encouragingly. "Besides, if you fall again, it's not like it will hurt," she pointed out. "The snow is soft ... which is probably why you keep sinking deeper in it."

She held her hand out to take Lin's bow from her, just in case she did fall. After all, while snow might not do anything to Lin, if she fell on the bow it might very well snap, and the backlash from the string could be quite painful.

This was true, snow back home probably wouldn't come for another two weeks to a month depending on how the weather was. So it wouldn't have been as ideal for flying as it would be now. Handing Rhea her bow Lin tried not to sigh.

She just kept reminding herself she should at least try for Rhea, because Rhea wasn't going to kick her off a roof.

Wings spread out, Lin leaped into the air. Flying in itself was natural for her, she had done acrobatics in the past so jumping wasn't a problem, and in truth all winged beings had a bit of magic that helped them fly. Otherwise it wouldn't have been possible, Lin had to admit this was very useful for scouting and would keep that in mind.

As she made her way a bit unsteadily over to the arrows, she was reminded why using this for scouting might be a bit difficult. As she stretched out the wings to land back on the ground, she lost balanced and tumbled the short fall back to the ground.

It would help to land correctly first. Lin sighed as she got up brushing the snow off and getting her wings right again. They didn't like to be landed on and she didn't like getting them wet unless it was to clean them.

"Not bad," Rhea smiled, "but try using your arms for balance as well. Like ... like jumping from a high height, throw your feet forward as if you're running or walking or something. Don't rely on your wings only."

She pursed her lips slightly. "And it may help if you slow down and try it slowly for a while until you get used to it," she added. "You're less likely to throw yourself off balance that way."

"Okay...." Lin shook her head getting the snow off her head.

Cold didn't normally bother her too much but now she wished for the warmth of the Southland, that or she was far too use to it still.

She carefully gathered up the arrows but walked back not trusting herself to land right with arrows in her arms.

Rhea was waiting for Lin, and she held out one hand to take the arrows from her, holding the bow out for her in her other hand. "Perhaps it's a good thing you're here in the winter," she murmured. "In the summer there would be many more obstacles to your training, or at least it would almost be too easy for you, and you wouldn't become as strong as quickly."

"True, it's a lot harder in the winter, between the snow and maybe the occasional ice and just the fact it's harder to move...." Lin murmured thoughtfully.

Though today was good, it was a clear day, probably too clear as there wasn't a cloud in the sky so it was quite cold. She handed the arrows back to Rhea and took the bow.

"So should we try this again?" Lin murmured.

Or maybe take a break, they had been through everything else so far today.

"If you would like to," Rhea smiled at Lin. "Though we've done quite a bit today, perhaps we could go in for a hot drink. Besides, there's something I've been meaning to ask you. Would you like to go inside?"

Whisper's ear flicked slightly as she heard Rhea's words, and she padded silently closer, more than ready to go inside. Covered in fur or not, it was still a cold day by anyone's standards. Except perhaps Ruque's.

"To ask something?" now that had Lin's interest.

There were times she was still very curious and anyone asking a question of her of all people tended to do that.

"Then let's head inside, and we can try again. With the flying...."

She was going to get all aspects of this before she went, Lin wanted to be completely fully functional which included flying.

Rhea smiled warmly, her hazel eyes bright. "I'll put on some cider," she agreed, turning and heading towards the house.

Once they were inside, Rhea headed towards the kitchen, with Whisper padding after her, as always. "If you want to change into some warmer clothes," she told Lin over her shoulder, "we may have some clothes your size upstairs, unless you brought your own. Otherwise, we do have blankets, and the fire in the kitchen is lit."
PostPosted: Tue Nov 10, 2009 9:34 pm

"I'll take the blankets," Lin replied, "All I have are travel clothes and my own clothes from my trip to the Southland and at night I use a blanket so I wasn't at all prepared for cold weather... and I wanted to be here right away so.... I didn't bother getting any clothes I did have at home modified just came straight here."

She probably should have thought about it a bit more seeing how the weather really did change from season to season here but she was being single minded at the time.

Rhea giggled softly. "Sure," she agreed. "I'll get the cider on the fire first so that we don't have to wait as long for it."

Once in the kitchen, she headed down to the cellar to get a container of cider, and she poured it into the kettle that hung in the fireplace, and swung it out over the fire. That done, she smiled at Lin again. "Go ahead and sit down, I'll bring a blanket."

"Thanks," Lin sat down at a chair.

It was nice to be warm again, sure it wasn't exactly as the same as it would be, being warm in Gaia, but when you've been outside in the cold for a long while warm was warm no matter where you were.

She stretched her wings a bit before bringing them back close to her, the inside was still more or less dry so they provided warmth. There were advantages as Lin was discovering to having wings.

It only took Rhea a few minutes to get the blanket for Lin, and she came downstairs and wrapped it around Lin's shoulders, tucking it carefully over her wings.

"There," she smiled. "Now just let me check on the cider ..."

She got some cups from the cupboard and brought them over to the hearth, then lifted the lid of the kettle and sniffed at it.
