Shiro was feeling a little bit less anxious and decided that he try to read a different passage of the book. According to a story at the Ryutaiji, there was a master of the Book of Changes in the Kamigata area who said that even if a man is a priest, it is useless to give him rank while he is under the age of forty. This is because he will make many mistakes. Gintama was not the only man to become unperplexed after the age of forty. Upon reaching the age of forty, both wise and foolish have gone through an appropriate amount of experience and will no longer be perplexed. Shiro smirked as he thought Well I guess I'm perplexed by this passage since I'm not an old fart past the age of forty. in a snarky manner. Shiro did not feel perplexed in the slightest so his mind rejected the wisdom of the passage as nonsense. So despite having been able to read the passage he was unconvinced in the long run and no closer to attaining higher wisdom than when he had been anxious and unable to read.

As he flipped through the pages of the book Shiro saw something that caught his eye. A certain person was brought to shame because he did not take revenge. The way of revenge lies simply in forcing one's way into a place and being cut down. There is no shame in this. By thinking that you must complete the job you will run of time. By considering things like how many men the enemy the enemy has, time piles up; in the end you will give up. No matter if the enemy has thousands of men, there is fulfillment in simply standing them off and being determined to cut them all down, starting from one end. You will finish the greater part of it. Shiro wasn't really in the business of revenge but the determination describe in the passage really spoke to him. So I should be determined to complete my goals and not really stop to think about the obstacles that are in my way. It was certainly good advice and on top of that Shiro felt as if he was nearing a good point stop reading and go back to some physical training.

When one's own attitude on courage is fixed is his heart, and when his resolution is devoid of doubt, then when the time comes he will of necessity be able to chose the right move. This will be manifested by one's conduct and speech according to the occasion. One's word is especially important. It is not for exposing the depths of one's heart. This is something that people will know by one's everyday affairs. Shiro smiled at the ease of the passage. This one was basically a have your goal set in your heart and when the time comes you'll be able to achieve it. Having been reading for quite some time now and after collecting a lot of different pieces of advise for wisdom Shiro's brain felt pretty full. He closed up Hagakure and put it back into his gear bag. With his training now complete Shiro eagerly left the library to pursue other training exercises.

User Image The old boards used to construct the library creaked underneath each and every footstep of those who walked its halls; somewhat annoyingly. He could understand the historical significance of the building, but surely there was something that could have been done to decrease that insufferable sound, if not eliminate it entirely. It sounded like an old shack some hick could have lived in.

"The preservation of the old and weak hinders the strength of our village."

Takashi didn't really care for it all that much. Sure, shrines and other buildings with no significant value could afford to be left alone. However, the library was not something the village could afford to lose to earthquake, fire, or enemy attack; a treasure trove of knowledge that nursed the suckling weak from the eggshells of their incompetence. The wood beams should have been replaced with steel girders, the walls with at least drywall instead of the thin paper sheets that were "of historical value."

"Someone throws a rock through that thing and there goes your historical value, right out the window."

Takashi picked up a pebble from the ground and rolled it around in his fingers and considered the weight and texture of the stone. How easily he could have tossed it over his shoulder and destroyed something so valuable preservationist were denying thousands of dollars to rebuild. But as easy as it could have been, and as easy as he could have gotten away with it, Takashi spotted one of the ANBU standing some distance away on another rooftop. Takashi was being allowed some freedom, but he was still to be watched at all times apparently. And apparently they didn't have to remain hidden any longer, so Takashi would always be reminded of their presence.

With a sigh, Takashi dropped the pebble back onto the ground, to which the ANBU nodded slightly. It annoyed Takashi, but not enough for the boy to care. He continued down the path to the library, through the door and inside the building.

"Ugh..."

The place smelled of ancient paper, dust, and a musty smell that could have been mold. It hadn't changed in all the years since his last visit, almost 2 years ago. Not even the layout or shelving system, as Takashi quickly walked through the aisles and found the particular area that contained scrolls pertaining to the teaching of different jutsus. Among the various techniques Takashi could have pulled from the racks, he already had a few in mind that suited his fighting style. From the Ninjutsu section he pulled down scrolls on Shunshin no Jutsu (Body Flicker Technique), Soshuha (Manipulating Attack Blades), Katon: Bakukadan (Fire Release: Exploding Flame Shot), Katon: Hosenka no Jutsu (Fire Release: Phoenix Immortal Fire Technique), Doton: Shinju Zanshu no Jutsu (Earth Release: Inner Decapitation Technique), and Doton: Doroku Gaeshi (Earth Release: Earth Shore Return). Then he walked down a few feet and from the Taijutsu section he grabbed scrolls pertaining to Style: Gouken (Strong Fist), Kage Shuriken no Jutsu (Shadow Shuriken Technique), Reppū (Gale), and Blocking.

There were other jutsus that Takashi wanted to learn, but Takashi figured he'd start out with these few because his current skill level was just enough to learn these few, let alone the rest that had caught his attention. Takashi sat down at the table and began reading the first scroll, committing the words to memory. He wasn't interested in checking out scrolls from the library; he was just taken off house arrest and didn't know when it might be reinforced. Plus, the reading would sharpen his mind, and Takashi knew that his body, no matter how strong, would be useless unless his mind possessed the focus to carry out its actions.

Still, it wouldn't have hurt to copy the information, in case he did forget. Takashi didn't want to think that for all his effort the instructions in his mind would be lost, but he didn't want to walk all the way back to the library to refresh his memory. Takashi pulled few pieces of blank parchment he had "picked up" off the librarians desk out of his backpack and began to copy the scrolls, as well as commit the information to memory. This was the only trip he was making to the library.

Just outside a man leaned against a wooden beam supporting the awning for the library. His mask had two red claw marks on the top and bottom, meeting at the eyes, which were just wide enough for him to see the boy sitting at the desk doing his work. On a clipboard he held in his hand the man took a few notes, of which one partial read:

"...ger is a problem. Will continue to observe for psyche testing. Subject needs to retain focus.

Arsenal shows promise, close range brawler, mid-long Katon user. He's an Uchiha after all. No signs of doujutsu use or activation, skeptical of tracking-nin reports. Will conti..."

User Image Tap, tap tap, tap tap, tap, tap tap tap. The strikes come through clear as day in the library. You could drop a pin on the floor and hear it clatter to the ground. It broke the silence that they strived to maintain, but Takashi had a look about him that said "mess with me, and I will ******** your day up", so the annoyed personnel left him alone. And Takashi pressed down on the paper extra hard just to piss them off, as a small smile crept across his face.

The sun was beginning to set outside the library, and he knew that the library staff would cherish the right to throw him out come nightfall. He had to make quick work of his studies.

"By creating a spark of fire release chakra from their hands, this jutsu allows the user to throw multiple balls of orange flame from their hands, which are able to cause fiery explosions on impact. The shots can also light the opponent on fire."

Takashi made quick work of copying the notes onto his paper, but only after the fact did he really realize the information wasn't sticking, going from the paper to his eyes and back out onto the paper. If Takashi was just here to copy scrolls, what point did it serve him to really go over the material? No, this was not his plan, and he would not continue to copy the other scrolls before at least committing something of this jutsu to memory.

"Stage I: Chakra Control: Generate fire in your hands from your chakra."

From your hands? The idea was new to Takashi; the only fire jutsu he had learned involved breathing out fire, and now with this jutsu he was somehow to make it with his hands? It didn't quite make sense. Witht he Goukakyo no Jutsu he could see the connection from infusing the inhaled air with chakra, and then changing the nature of that chakra to that of fire. When breathed out, he would ignite the gas at just the right opportunity and the fire would have his chakra for combustion and the air for fuel. It fit together. But now it seemed that Takashi would have to pull a Harry Houdini and make this fire from out of his hand, using only his chakra...

The idea was strange to Takashi, but he had to at least commit this information to memory if he was to further explore the jutsu and its inner workings.

User Image It just made no sense.

"Generate the flame from within you by molding your Fire Affinity chakra."

Takashi understood the concept. Charka is first generated within the body, near the stomach, which is why it was easy to mold charka in the stomach for jutsus that involved spitting or throwing something up. The lungs weren't a far cry from the stomach, so it was also viable to infuse chakra into the air held in the lungs. But he'd never heard of people shooting lasers out of their eyeballs, or making fire straight from their hands. And because it didn't make sense to him must've been the reason he wasn't getting it.

"Screw this, I just need to move on. If I can't remember one line, I still have the scroll."

And so Takashi continued going over the instructions to learning the Katon: Bakukadan (Fire Release: Exploding Flame Shot). There were a few diagrams between the last stage of training and the next, which only annoyed Takashi because he struggled with it. On top of his frustration, it seemed that the library workers were honing in on Takashi, not stopping, but constantly walking past him. He had half a mind to get up out his chair and bark at the Chunnin, but then he'd give them a reason to throw him out, and it would also look bad on Takashi for the freedom that he had been given.

"Stage II: Ninjutsu: Give the flames physical form and spherical shape.

This was clearly shape manipulation, of which Takashi had heard about. It seemed like an arduous task, but not impossible or unheard of, and for a low level jutsu, it shouldn't have been significantly difficult. Takashi read the instructions and looked over the diagrams a few times and committed the information to memory.

"Okay, so first I need to generate the fire, somehow, but then I need to shape them for use..."

User Image Buzz buzz buzz buzz. The insufferable species flew around above his head. In their defense, he hadn't taken a shower today, and to them it smelled like tasty meal. But their one track mind didn't have the capacity to realize how much the boy wanted to light them all on fire and watch the incessant creatures lose their minds, or how much he wanted to grab them and pluck the tiny wings from their corpses one by one. Yes, this boy was a sadistic b*****d indeed.

Oh, but damn it. If he used his Katon now, Takashi could have very well set the whole building on fire, and then he'd have to spend the rest of his life with the flies in his tiny apartment, if he wasn't dead from Zephyr beating him to death. No, Takashi had to wave one hand around above his head, and because he was half-focused on the intolerable little things Takashi lost his focus and couldn't memorize the technique.

"Okay, ******** this. I'm going to be here all night if I can't even memorize this thing sentences at a time. Move on."

Before Takashi moved down the scroll to the third and final set of instructions, he looked over the diagrams a few times, hoping that maybe the pictures would stick in his mind better than the words. The scroll showed imagines of the fire going from a flickering ember to a rounded ball of fire. He knew that shape manipulation was a somewhat difficult subject, but surely this would be easy. It was a C-rank jutsu after all.

"Stage III: Dexterity: Chuck the fireballs at a target."

This seemed pretty self explanatory, but Takashi look down below the instructions and noticed that the fireballs appeared to have specific flight patterns depending on how they were thrown. The shots could be hooked, spun, arched, and maneuvered to fly in a helix path. Takashi looked over the different kinds of hand gestures associated with the different flight paths, hoping at last something about this jutsu would connect with his brain.

User Image "Hey, can you quiet down over there? And its almost closing, shouldn't you be going home soon? Start packing it up."

"Oh, shut up you blithering idiot."

Takashi was beginning to loath these persistent bastards, they circled around him like vultures. On several occasions he could swear they were close enough to be breathing down his neck. He despised these pricks for showing their true feathers, the harpies they were. It sickened Takashi that the military of Konoha had been reduced to petty, greedy, good-for-nothing shinobi that simply asked to have their asses kicked. No wonder Konoha was in a total civil war. Takashi was surprised that the village was still standing.

However, Takashi was finally able to focus on his work rather than the obstacles in front of him, and memorized the Katon: Bakukadan (Fire Release: Exploding Flame Shot). He also had a back-up scroll just in case he forgot the technique, it had taken him a while to memorize it after all. Now Takashi rolled up the scroll, tied it up, and set it aside on the opposite side of the other scrolls yet to be copied. He took the paper he had used to copy the information to and put it in the back of the stack of papers he had been writing on, now ready to beginning copying another jutsu. Takashi reached over without lifting his head from the paper, grabbed another scroll at random, and opened it up. This one contained information pertaining to the Shunshin no Jutsu.

"A high-speed movement technique. It is described as 'appearing with the wind and disappearing like the wind.' Using chakra to activate the body, the user is able to move from one point to another with extreme speeds. This super-fast movement is almost impossible to see with the naked eye. To a normal person, it would seem as if the user has teleported."

Takashi scribbled down in the corner of the page to make sure his pen was working, and began to copy down the information on the scroll. Meanwhile, the vultures circled his table...

User Image "Alright kid, come on, finish up. It's closing time, and we all want to go home. Besides, we need to clear out for the night shift, and they have orders to kill anyone trespassing after dark."

"So you're telling me that you're going to kill me if I don't leave?"

"No, I'm telling you that you need to get the hell out."

"Library's open dawn till dusk and I still see light coming out of that window, so if you don't mind, please allow me to study."

The boy knew that the guards patience was waning, and it was only a matter of time before the man tried to grab Takashi by his collar and throw him out of the library. At the same time, Takashi's tolerance for this man's self-serving attitude was agitating his fiery temper. Takashi knew the precarious situation he was in, but Takashi would rather die than put up with this man's dribble.

The Chunnin had finally stopped circling the boy, and confronted him directly. He would not move until Takashi was out of his hair, and the others that were circling settled in nearby inconspicuous locations to watch the conversation ensue. Takashi did not get up, he did not turn his head, Takashi didn't even look at the man. Instead their conversation carried out as the boy continued to read the scrolls and copy the information onto the parchment the Chunnin hadn't even noticed he'd stolen.

"The sun is just about to set, just take off!"

"Until that sun is completely below the horizon, I won't be going anywhere. I suggest you get comfy, it looks like I still have another ten minutes."

Takashi didn't look up to see through the window, he didn't have to. During their travels, Kiyoshi had taught Takashi to judge time by the length from the sun to the horizon, the distance from the point directly overhead, and by the brightness of the ambient light in the sky. Takashi wasn't wrong.

"Goddamn it, just get the hell out!"

Now the man grabbed Takashi's arm, causing him to accidentally scribble all over his paper, ruining all his hard work copying the Shunshin no Jutsu. It had been hard enough to concentrate on trying to memorize the information on the scroll, which had eventually proved futile, as the Chunnin continued to pester him with his selfishness. Takashi finally gave up on trying to memorize the instructions, and had decided to just copy down the information and then come back to go back over the information. Now his studies AND the copied scroll were ruined, and Takashi's aggravation was nearing its limit. At least if Takashi ran out of time and was forced from the library, he could go over the copied papers and review the technique. His patience was dangerously low.

"Get your <********> hands off me!"

Charka surged from within Takashi, through his pathway system, and into his eyes. Takashi's head whipped around from the paper to look at the man, his long hair momentarily obscuring his face. He did not need blink his eyes, like most other Uchiha tended to do, as when the Chunnin finally came eye to eye with the boy, he could see his eye's turning from the dark mahogany to a crimson red, one tomoe in one eye, two in the other. The man was put off guard by the Sharingan, he hadn't taken the time to really notice the Uchiha symbol on the back of his shirt. It intimidated him, but the Chunnin quickly masked his emotions and caught his balance.

"Just wait. You're gonna be out on your a** in no time."

The man had tried to hide his fear, but nothing seemed to pass the boy when he activated his Sharingan. Takashi hated himself for it, it reminded him of the clan he despised; no he had to use the Uchiha as a crutch for Takashi to truly be taken seriously. It made him sick, to actually think he needed them, and yet his eyes shone the red crimson that had made the Uchiha one of the most powerful clans in Konoha. He quickly deactivated it after returning to his work; he had made his point, and the man had backed off. In fact, everyone in the building looked away from the boy, but still a common enmity for the boy resonated within the building. Hopefully he could continue his work without interruption until dusk...

User Image It was much quieter. The boy enjoyed the momentary serenity the silence of the library gave him. And for once the Chunnin and library personnel hadn't pestered him at all during his studies; he found it much easier to concentrate on his work. Takashi didn't bother with trying to annoy them by making his pen strikes and strokes as loud as possible; they were already set to throw his a** out on the street as soon as dusk set in, and now that he was angry, messing around with them wouldn't be any fun. It was bittersweet, for in his solitude, Takashi found the clarity he had hoped for, but had lost the fun in doing so. Work had become... well, work.

The boy quickly went over the instructions and diagrams of the Shunshin no Jutsu. It all seemed relatively easy. The first set of instructions said to work on improving one's speed, which Takashi already prided himself with, and the second step was to try infusing chakra into the muscles of the legs to further enhance one's speed. Cut and dry. The only thing needed was the apparent use of the Ram seal, to activate one's chakra for the technique, but this was simple. A one hand seal technique.

With the information, Takashi swiftly copied the information down on a new piece of paper, taking notes on the chakra activation of the leg muscles and of the Ram seal. Takashi remembered his difficulty with the hand seal back in his Academy days and copied down a sketch of the Ram seal just to be sure. It was done, two down, eight to go.

Takashi rolled up the scroll, tied it, and set it aside along with the Katon: Bakukadan (Fire Release: Exploding Flame Shot). Before he could grab another scroll to learn, Takashi's peace and quiet was interrupted by one of the civilian library workers shouting from a distance.

"You better put away those scrolls where you found them, kid."

Another civilian worker quickly hushed her in fear of the child.

"Shhhh, shut up. Just let the kid finish up and leave. He got all his stuff from the same area, it shouldn't be too hard to restock them."

Takashi, while annoyed with the librarians for their self-serving agenda, was a little insulted by their statement. Takashi was an angry, emotionally damaged, ticking time-bomb. He was an Uchiha with an activated Sharingan, which most village civilians feared in its own right. He had nowhere to go and nothing to lose, which meant he could very well do whatever he wanted and not care for the consequences. But Takashi was not without his manners.

"Don't worry, I will," he said back to the library staff. In the silence of the building, Takashi's voice could easily been heard, so he didn't shout like the librarian had done. Takashi picked up the next scroll, and Taijutsu scroll on the Kage Shuriken no Jutsu (Shadow Shuriken Technique), and began his work.

User Image There wasn't much time left. The ambient light was fading quickly, making it harder to see the scroll. His eyes strained against the dimming light in the library, but Takashi would not use his Sharingan. He hated himself for using it in the first place, even if it was to scare off the pestering library staff, and even if it would give him better clarity in the darkening room. It reminded him of the clan he hated, and made him feel like he needed their crutch to succeed as a shinobi. No, he would not use his Sharingan.

"Can you please turn on the lights?"

"Kid, we're about to close up for the night. Why would I want to turn on the lights just to turn them back on five minutes later? Now you should really pack your stuff up and go."

Takashi was annoyed at the continuance of the library staffs' self-serving agenda, but for the first time that night had could actually see the logic in their statement, and for that he did not lose his cool. To turn on the lights for the library, one had to go down to the basement, flip the breaker controlling the power for the library, and then come all the way back up and turned on the switch for the lights. However, by flipping the breaker, it would power the entire library, not just the building he was in, therefore wasting power on every other building. Takashi would not ask again.

Takashi instead sat up straight picked up the scroll, and held it up to the light, making the contrast between the paper and the ink much clearer. He was clearly able to make out the instructions, but now the task remained of trying to copy down the words he had written. This did not go as well, as Takashi couldn't write in a straight line, and often ended up scribbling the words instead of writing legibly. Takashi's efforts to copy the paper were futile.

User Image[Alternate time frame]

A quiet shuffling came across the old wooden boards of the library, though this man found it reminiscent of an older time, a time in which the entire shinobi world finally found peace in confronting a common enemy. The creak of the fibers straining under his minute weight, the pure smell of the age these timbers had acquired, it inspired him. Kumogakure had no such remnants now, only buried under several feet of snow and picked clean by scavengers. It took this man back years, to the time before the avalanche, in which historical value had actually mattered. At least, 800 years of history mattered.

"Please, allow me."

The voice came from outside, which wasn't too hard to believe considering all was quiet inside. The shuffling finally came to a halt as a tall, slender man walked through the doorway to the library. He had long golden blonde hair, tied behind his head in a ponytail, which only flared out afterwards. He wore a tight tank top which appeared to have a black, sleeveless flak jacket, and odd looking pants which were a bit poofy at the thigh and skin-tight around the shins. He wore shin guards and arm guards, of which the Kumogakure symbol could be seen on the left hand, and the Konohagakure symbol on the right. The man had placed his hand on a metal junction box.

In a flurry of electric sparks that erupted from the man's hand, electricity soon flowed throughout the library building, illuminating all the lights within. The staff appeared flabbergasted, as the man seemed to have powered the entire building with only the touch of his hand. The Chunnin stood confused, as they had never seen such a technique, and the civilians were completely baffled.

"Please, excuse my intrusion, but I heard a bit of a commotion on my walk by the library and thought I might offer some assistance."

One of the men recognized the strange man, from a meeting. He had stood in the back of the room, but was no doubt made noticed by the group when introduced.

"You are the new Chunnin, aren't you? You're the Raiken."

"Indeed I am."

Another library staff member stepped forward, this one civilian.

"My apologizes Raiken-san, but the library is about to close. We've been waiting for this one to finish up and leave, and then unfortunately we have to close. We will be open again at dawn." The look she gave Takashi as she said "this one" was of disgust, which did not slip past Kiego. His eyes could see the particular electrical impulses in her brain that signified anger, dislike. She had a look in her eyes that asked if he would be the one to step up and take this angry child away from here, but Kiego would not oblige.

"Oh, surely the boy has a name. It is impolite to refer to someone you have not yet taken the time to meet as such. Now then, this young man seems to be minding his own business, studying no less. Why not allow him to continue? I will supervise him."

"Raiken-san, you need not trouble yourself with..."

"It is no trouble. Please, leave us. Go enjoy your night."

Kiego smiled at the woman, but the look in his eyes made her shake with fear. It was a cold stare, a glare in his eyes that conveyed his disgust of her ignorance. She backed off and broke eye contact, feeling ashamed. Within the next few minutes, the staff quietly backed up their belongings and filed out of the building, leaving a set of keys on the front desk no doubt for locking up the building when they had finished.

"Now then, might I ask you for your name?"

User Image Takashi strained his eyes against the shrouding blackness that seemed to hide the paper from his sight, when all of a sudden the lights flickered back to life and he could see clearly. Takashi looked up from his studies to see another shinobi arrive at the library, though Takashi's first thought was that this man was part of the night shift that would guard the library at night. This proved not to be the case when he introduced himself as the new Chunnin arrival from Konoha, and despite the library staffs' attempts at throwing the child out, he defended the boy and effectively threw the staff out instead. Takashi hadn't known the man for more than five minutes and he was already warming up to him.

While the man was escorting the library staff out of the building, Takashi tried to finish up copying down the Kage Shuriken no Jutsu (Shadow Shuriken Technique) onto a piece of paper, which proved no problem for him now that the lights were back on. He wrote down the instructions as well as copied a few different diagrams on how and when to throw the following shuriken so they would be hidden by the first. Timing seemed to be the key component of the jutsu, in order to make the illusion of throwing only one shuriken a success. Once he had finished, Takashi rolled up the scroll, bound it, and set it aside with the other completed scrolls. The boy thought about introducing himself to the man, but being that the man had effectively made the library a nice quiet place to do his studies, Takashi figured that he would continue and make use of the time the man had bought Takashi. He reached over and picked up the scroll for Reppū (Gale), and began to work.

"Using their quickness and agility, the user performs a spinning kick to sweep their opponent off their feet. This technique is a good example of how even simple taijutsu can become a preeminently destructive, lethal technique. The move here is a simple rear spinning low kick, but a strong enough user can send a large adult flying as if they weighed nothing. The goal is to throw the enemy off balance, and deal damage to the lower half of their body."

Takashi sat and thought for a moment how he could use this move to trip up those annoying Chunnin whenever they tried to bother him in the future. It was simple, yet devastating and effective. Takashi was going to savor learning this technique.

It had been a little while since he had gotten to the village, yet Haitou had done nothing useful with his time yet. He hadn't been assigned to a squad so the only missions he could accept would be tedious tasks for a little extra money so he could eat. He spent most of his money he had prior to coming on housing. So it was time to learn some new jutsu. But first he needed to research the basic knowledge.

After searching around for a while, he would find the section for medical ninja. He needed to first read up on the basics. Bandaging, making ointments and how the body worked. Anatomy, Circulatory system, etc. Once he found the right area he would remove the backpack he was carrying and sit it on a table to go collect a whole stack full of books. He didn't know if it was what he needed in full, but it would be a feasible start.
