"Well, I learned it when I was younger, but not through school. It was just sort of an interest of mine," Dari said as he loaded their bags into the car. "I have an eidetic memory, so languages are easier for me than most. My brain cheats." He offered a half-ashamed smile. "I have been to Japan, though... and various other countries."

"That's really neat," Cody said. "So you learn them faster, or memorize easier? Really? I've been out of the state a few times, but never out of the country. Where've you been?" No doubt on some secret agent business. Without the girls, casinos and fancy cars. Dari seemed so much more humble than all of that seemed to imply.

"A little bit of both? A lot of learning is memorizing." He'd learned proper English in the span of a few weeks with a dictionary and grammatical booklet. "Oh, um. The UK, Ireland lots of times. Scotland, China, Korea, South Africa, Algeria, France, Italy, Mexico... I mean, the work brings you everywhere. One week we'll be working in Japan and three days later it'll take us to Hawaii." His work was good for world-seeing.

Ah...so Dari had basically been everywhere. "The furthest I've been from home was Hawaii. Some cousins decided to get married there. Its beautiful." A teacher's salary didn't allow for much travel, though. "Where did you go most recently? Or, can you not say? I don't want you to get into trouble."

"Ireland," Dari said with a smile, and then added in Gaelic: "I speak Gaelic too." Then back to English. "I can't tell you certain things, but it's not all completely confidential. Besides, I trust you to not tell some dangerous organization where I am to get me killed." He winked and slid into the driver's seat, then waited for Cody to get in too before he spoke again. "We should go somewhere some day. You and me. Somewhere far away."

Cody's eyes widened. The Irish language was practically dead, from what he'd heard. "Was that Irish?" he asked. "What can you tell me?" He asked. He smiled and climbed into the passenger seat. "I'm sure if you thought I wasn't trust worthy you'd have erased my memory or something secret-agenty like that." He leaned over the center console to place a kiss on Dari's cheek.
"I'd like that."

Cody had no idea that they really did have the technology. There were too many side effects to use it often, though. It wasn't good for people.
"Mm-hm. About this last one? I can tell you we were on an ambassadorial trip, but that's about it." He already knew something big had happened. Dari smiled at the kiss and started off.
"Were would you want to go?"

"Can you tell me about other trips?" Cody asked, curiously. "Do you have some time off to go see things or is it all work?"
Cody considered that question for a long time, before glancing at Dari. "I'd like to go to England," he said. "See the castles, maybe go to the Doctor Who museum... Where would you like to go most?"

"Sure, what ones?" Dari asked, "And it depends on the mission. Sometimes we do and sometimes we don't."
He let the comfortable silence stretch and then glanced to Cody. "England is easy," Dari said with a nod. "Me? Oh..." He had been almost everywhere. He'd like to go to his home planet, but that didn't appear to be possible any time soon. "I don't know. I enjoy every place I go. Mostly, anyway."

"Pick one and tell me about it," Cody suggested. "I don't know, whichever you feel most comfortable talking about?"
"I'll look up scenic places in England," he offered. Dari had seemed to really love the mountain day trip. "What are you most excited to try today?"

Dari thought back. What was the safest to tell him about?
"Well we had a case in Oregon not long ago. We got to spend a lot of time on the beach, which I probably shouldn't admit." He laughed. "It's nice out there by the water. I'd like to go back." He wanted to smell the salt, feel it on his face, feel the rush of the water...
"All of it. Everything horrible." Dari laughed again. "I wonder if they'll have any exotic fruit at the market?

"I've been to Oregon," Cody smiled. "The beaches are really nice, a lot different than the ones in Hawaii. It was cold and windy when we went, but mostly we stayed in this place called Winston. They have this animal safari where the animals run free in their naturally-man-made-habitats. It was nice."

Dari had yet to experience the beach like Cody had, but some day he would. He was sure of that.
"Really? We mostly just stayed by the beaches and on the water," he said, and then got a smarmy sort of tone to his voice and spoke from the corner of his mouth, "We might have been slightly undercover." Only for those first couple days before they found Maia, though.

Cody's eyes were dancing. "Secret agents on an Oregon beach," he said, shaking his head in amusement. "We should go there, then. Give you the real tourist treatment. What's it like going undercover?"

Under cover? Oh, lord, he'd been undercover since his first foray into the public arena.
"It's uncomfortable. It's good to have a partner to go through it with you. It takes a lot of training before they'll let you go under cover. You can't be yourself at all. I'd much rather go as a tourist."
