I'm so glad to see everyone poking around again! Really missed you guys ^^
I definitely agree about combining a few of the stats to make things more simple. It will also make it easier for new people to pick up the system.
For balancing purposes, I was thinking that we should make all of the clans give equal bonuses. This way, everyone can feel a bit more free to join a clan without feeling like they are going to hurt themselves in the long run. The Uchiha clan has been so overpowered that I never used Sukotto's Sharingan in the two major PVP matches that I had against Aya and Maya and Sukotto still managed to win both of those.
I think each clan should give a set bonus to abilities and a set bonus to skills. Those can vary, as long as each clan gives the same number of bonuses. In addition to that, we could also have some clans give negative bonuses to certain skills/abilities and in turn, they would be able to give more bonuses to their positive skills/abilites.
For example,
Clan #1 ------------------------ Abilities: +4 to Chakra Skills: +3 to Ninjutsu +3 to Sense +3 to Knowledge ------------------------
Clan #2 ------------------------ Abilities: -2 to Chakra +2 to Agility +4 to Strength Skills: +9 to Taijutsu -6 to Ninjutsu +3 to Grapple ------------------------
In this case, each clan nets a total bonus of 4 Ability Points and 9 Skill Points. Some clans in Naruto, such as the Uchiha, change as the user grows. Like when their Sharingan gets to the next stage. For situations like that, we could just make the negative bonuses greater in order to give more positive bonuses.
Clan #2 - Stage 2 ------------------------ Abilities: -4 to Chakra +4 to Agility +4 to Strength Skills: +12 to Taijutsu -9 to Ninjutsu +3 to Grapple ------------------------
This way, the total net bonus stays the same and the clan doesn't really become more powerful than the other clans. They just have a different sort of build as they advance through the stages.

Mickey, it's a great idea--no more of this "plus/minus character level to skill" stuff. Massive bonuses or maluses aren't necessary to encourage specialization; a small handful of bonuses and Clan-restricted jutsus should be quite fine.
However, you may want to double-check your math--your Clan 2 example results in +6, not +9.
We should limit it so that we don't get +24 to one skill and -1 to every other skill. I don't see a strong reason to go above +5 or below -5 in anything. Same with the number of bonuses and maluses--maybe 1-3 ability changes and 3-5 skill changes, to include both additions and subtractions.
I'm not overly fond of the "Stage 2" bit. A +5 or -5 is good for whatever you're doing, because sufficient training should be able to make up for shortcomings eventually, not prohibit them from even trying.

While we work out the system troubles, perhaps we should also give some focus on the plot. Whenever we've had major stops like this before, there has been some dramatic event or a time skip (to include the transfer to Sawagakure). We have quite a few of the people we had before we stopped; I don't really see a strong need to start fresh again. Only Sorri and maybe one or two other missing people were involved in the fight where we left off.
This being said, we do need an influx of new members. If I'm not mistaken, we have a L6 genin, a L4 academy student, and a L2 academy student. Unless the L2 catches up and the genin is fine with repeating his genin test, we don't exactly have enough for a genin squad. We should think about higher-ups, as well, though there doesn't seem to be a pressing need for a chunin tournament or anything of the sort yet.
Perhaps some of us veterans can create new characters to fill these roles--with permission and thorough vetting, of course. We can also try to contact old members and see if anyone from Sawagakure is willing to rejoin us. I can't find a trace of that guild anymore, though...
Before we start, the crew will need to go back through and re-assess what everyone has earned in terms of experience and skill increases.

I think I'd be fine with making a new character to fill low-level spots heart
I love Kane as well (my chuunin), but I think he's had enough drama for a while and would live quite a boring life growing flowers or whatever. [Depends on the timeline though]
We should think about when in the timeline we'd want to start again. Right after the Black Spring, so we can focus on the rebuilding? Or possibly in the future (which might help those who had characters/clan plots running in between Shima and Sawa and might be confused. OK, maybe just me xD;; )
I do think that it would be important not to over-focus on the system and to make sure we have a really good premise going. I think that, since we'd be RPing slower, a problem with the plot would be noticed much faster and have worse effects than a problem with the system.
Regarding the clans, my only worry is that it might make it less fun for people not in a clan. It might not be the best solution but I have an idea of people in clans earning less experience than the clanless? If you think about it, it makes sense, because they presumably would be more familiar with ninja stuff and so be less clueless at the start, which means they'd learn less comparatively. But it's just a thought. The small bonuses look great, though. I kinda found myself guilty in the past of not bothering to put points into what my clan should specialise in, just because I had the humongous clan bonuses...

I agree with Maia. It might be a good thing to have an overarching plotline providing some structure so that not everyone is all over the place doing nothing but grinding or out of it because they can't fit into someone else's sub-plot. Like she said, there is the problem of not currently having enough people to really be able to run a big event, but I also think having a smaller group of characters can provide for solid storybuilding and get people interacting.
You can try recruiting through the forums as well.
Also, like Maia suggested, having a skill point cap might be smart. A character number cap might also be helpful for the (distant) future.
Perhaps, for those of us who had characters that were academy students, we could just make them make them a higher rank and level, f we decide to go with a time-skip revival. I was actually thinking we'd go with an entirely new and different plot though.
Kouri makes a good point about the clan imbalance...but rather than staggering the exp gains, maybe it'd be better to neutralize the bonuses? I hope I don't make anyone angry with this, but I just think it might be fairer to have the clan bonuses even out to 0 despite that making it sound like clan bonuses might be useless?

As far as plot goes, in my opinion we shouldn't fill gaps with NPC characters.
I personally like the idea of starting fresh and sticking to our favorite characters. I'd love to use the chuunin like Sukotto, Maya, and Kane to train the younger generations. We don't have to stick to the strict "1 Jounin + 3 Genin" squad thing. Why not have Sukotto bring an Academy Student and a Genin on a mission? We'll set the enemy NPC's up to not totally slaughter them razz Maybe just a pack of animals or something.
We could also use Kouri's idea and have the older generations train the younger ones to use techniques and whatnot.

Now as far as characters without a clan goes, they just wouldn't get ANY positive or negative bonuses.
When you pick a clan, you are basically choosing to specialize in a few abilities. If you don't pick a clan, you are starting with a blank slate and can take your character in any direction.
Clan #1 ------------------------ +2 Chakra -2 Strength ------------------------
Clanless Character ------------------------ No Positive Bonus No Negative Bonus ------------------------
Like Maia said, we'd always make sure that clans got something like +5 to various stats and -5 to their stats so that every character would be equal. We'd make sure that the negative bonuses would be significant too. So you wouldn't get something like -5 to Dance or something weird!!!!

Chuunin my a**, Maya ranked out at Kage *puffs out chest* [ Side note ... Maya and Baki are currently pirates in a One Piece guild > o > Maya is 30 ... sweet Jebus ... ]
The math is all right on the clan bonuses, but I don't know about the minus in exchange for plus elsewhere. I do agree about having negative stats just to balance stuff out, but again, not to add stuff elsewhere. I like having the clan bonuses amount to zero.
We don't have to do a Jounin and 3 Genin. Can always pair off with two lower ranks and a higher rank.
Plot wise ..
I mean would we be starting with the village already intact, or would there be a gathering of shinobi in order to start up the village?
Starting with the village, we can do the ever classic festival, with errands and mini-training and mini-games to get everyone used to the system in a fairly 'fun' way. Prizes can be things like ryo, or weapon passes for X rank in the future of the RP, to keep people striving for that next rank up, something to look forward to.
Afterwards, perhaps an arc based on character building, where part of the academy lessons are about learning about your village mates, kind of like an en masse ice breaker. We could put up parameters so far as time limits for waiting on other posts, or just let it be a free for all where whoever has the most information at the end of the month gets .. something. I don't know. First dibs on squad decisions. I'm just throwing ideas out there. The last story arc I did in the last Naruto guild I was in was based on a corrupt geneticist stealing wildlife and creating chimeras to set loose on the villagers, with five jounin level bosses who had chuunin level hench-chimeras, against mostly genin accompanied by one jounin or satoosa. It got wild.
As far as pets and bijuu go, which are the systems I designed this last go around, what are the thoughts on those? I've seen how some other guilds use them and I wasn't at all impressed with their training methods ( writing out 500 words per tail on the beast JUST to master their chakra got really boring after three tails. And I had the seven tailed. > o > ). I'm not saying make it easy, but I am saying I'd like to work on those systems again and revamp them.
PS My posts are going to seem really randomly timed compared to all of yours, but that's because I live in South Korea now ... have been here for two years, and heading home this fall. > o >

I had an idea about the pet system and I wanted to know what you thought of it in particular, Maya. The pet system is your baby, and this is quite a bit different, but please think it over because I think it could work really very well for pet users. What if we made it so that pet users had to be part of a clan specific to pets? In Naruto anytime someone had some sort of pet, they were part of a clan specific to that pet. Like Aburame Shino with the insects or Inuzuka Kiba with the dogs. With the current system, people have to make a profile for their Ninja Character AND their Pet Character. To make it easier, we could just get rid of the Pet Character Profile and give certain clan bonuses to the ninja character. Then, we could base the special clan techniques on moves that you would do with a pet. This way, pet users don't have to manage two profile sheets. Maya, you've always been awesome at doing that, but most people aren't as dedicated as you. In addition, it would balance the pet users along with the other pet characters. NEXT PART IS IMPORTANTAnd if we did this, we would compensate people who already have a Pet Profile like Maya, by adding her Pet's current Experience Points to her character so she would receive a huge boost. This system would make the pet system waaaaaaay more approachable and fun I think. Feel free to shoot me down, Maya. But try and work with me on this as I think it would really help pet users in the long run. I am glad that you are thinking about being part of Shima again because of situations like this. I'd like to work with you and figure out a good system to go with. Example of a pet clan in Naruto: Inuzuka Clan

It would be great to have clans like the Inuzuka and such, but the only downside is placing limits on the type of pets people can have - otherwise we're going to have clans for every which animal.
The Tategami Clan was like that before, where all members were partnered with a lion/lioness, and that was it. Of course, it wasn't a bloodline clan, so anyone wanting to be adopted was tested by the clan leader at the time, but ...
I think we could do some animal-specific clans ( Aburame, Inuzuka, Tategami, etc etc, for specific animals ), and then have one clan that's open to partners in general? Or something. It'd be something to consider, for sure.
I think that it could be a better way to do it, keeping the shinobi and partner profile as one. However, would these clan bonuses also be under the rule of balancing to zero? I feel like the pet bonus should be minimal, but not have to balance to zero, so that it's a true bonus for people who choose to have their pets. However, I also believe that if the pets/partners are not utilized or RP'd with, there should be a penalty for it. It's all too easy to SAY you have a pet, but only have him around when it's convenient. Yes, I'm a little biased.
My only question then would be if pets would still have their own skill sets, and if so, if they would be based off their partner's stats. The whole point of the pet profiles was for pets to have their own stats, and hold their own in fights. Otherwise, they are just an 'add-on', and not really their own fighters. Do we want pets to be partners in the truest sense of the word, or do we want them to merely be weapons?
You're adorable for linking me the Inuzuka like I have no idea what a pet clan is, lol. heart

redface
Mostly did it for people who don't know the Inuzuka Clan. I actually didn't remember the name of it myself ^^;; In Naruto if someone has some kind of animal, they're in a clan. Thank you for working with me on this, I'm a little shocked that you are willing to consider the single profile idea. Shocked, but very happy.
If someone wants a unique pet that grants them bonuses, they will need to make a clan for it eventually. If someone just wants a pet to have a pet to RP with, let them do that. But if they are thinking of bonuses and jutsu with the pet, they should make a clan for it.
I still think that the Pet Clans should balance to zero. They would grant really good stuff though. For instance it seems like Pet users are typically not very sociable with humans, hence always hanging around animals, so they would get a negative to Charisma.
Pet Clan Example --------------------------------- Abilities +2 Strength -2 Charisma Skills +3 Taijutsu -3 Genjutsu +4 To our new skill that combines sense and detect -4 To Persuade ---------------------------------
As far as Pet skills/techniques go, those will just be the clan jutsu. Here is one of Baki's techniques:
Rage Need to Fill Requirements By utilizing one's own chakra to burst through the body, animals can command their adrenaline to kick into gear when they most need it. This burst of adrenaline helps the animal deal damage and further pump itself up with every attack. However, it does cause them to lose focus and become a little sloppy since they've turned so aggressive. Commanding the animals becomes harder. CP: 20 + 5 per holding post. Damage: Normal Fight + Chakra Mod + 1 per 10 ranks Trick Pet Requirements: Control 10, Trick 10 Avoid: Dodge / Fly / Slide Special: - Chakra Mod to Coordinate skill while Rage is in effect.
So we'd just change the wording so that both Maya and Baki felt the rage and used the technique. Or, Maya would just command Baki to use the technique and that would count as their single, unified turn. Just like one character was using a technique. But only the single unified profile sheet would get a bonus. Pretty much all pet attacks in Naruto involved their human partner in one way or another, even if they just commanded the pet to go do it.
Finally, if you wanted your pet to be in a different location than your Shinobi you could absolutely do that. Even just with one stat sheet. You would just have to treat the CP and HP of the stat sheet like it was a pool that they were both drawing from. So if Maya does training in the streets of Shimagakure and Baki does training out in the mountains, you would just have to subtract the CP they each used from that same stat sheet.
With battling, we might have to be a little more strict about that and not let them fight in two places at once, but I never see Akamaru go and fight something while Kiba is in a different location fighting someone else.

I was thinking that maybe there could be a general clan that uses pets, perhaps with the stats that McClane gave in his example. Then, if people come in and want to use one of the Naruto clans, they could just branch out from it? They could play the first ever Inuzukas or Aburames or that cat clan. (Since Shima is set in the distant past)
Either that, or have the pet bonuses be something that you can train for. Since it represents the bond between the animal and the human, gaining those bonuses would be as simple as doing a training for it. [This would allow people who just picked up a stray to be able to fight with them, as opposed to having the whole clan thing]
If it's a terrible idea feel free to knock it off. Just pushing out multiple ideas xD
As for the plot, I think we should put it to a vote as to when we'd start/what the premise would be. Well I say vote but I guess it'd be less of a ballot and more of just stating our positions. Then we can go on from there xD
I think starting straight after the Black Spring would be a good idea. I have ideas for the Yamanaka as well as Kane's character progression. Plus, there would be an instant village event, so to speak, due to the rebuilding required. [So basically everyone would have to interact regardless of rank or allegiance for the good of the village] But, it depends on the characters we have.
Having said that, I'm fine with starting 7-8 years after the Black Spring, aka when Sawagakure was set as well sweatdrop This is purely due to the stuff I had going for Yamanaka at that stage in the timeline. [Sorry, stating it really plainly here] Another good thing I can see about this is that it gives us a chance to reset the story somewhat.
