Well ska is the roots with roots...
It's the upbeat, upstroke, music that takes from calypso, american blues and jazz and other forms of music that was created in the Caribbean. It spawned reggae, punk, dub and more. Like in reggae you hear that little upidy fast beat like strumming of a guitar that comes from ska. Some bands or people you should check out are. The specials, Desmond Dekker, Judge Dread, Fishbone, Reel Big Fish, Sublime (use ska in their music), The Mudsharks.
