Cody moved to kiss his cheek. "Kind of like me, huh? I hope I've put a mark on your life. You've certainly made one on mine." He still felt bad about staining Dari's shirt, though.
"But it was a surprise. Besides," He smiled at Dari, "Now I get to look at you when my eyes are supposed to be on the road."

"So soon?" Dari asked. How could he have made a mark already? It made him feel that warm 'fuzzy' stuff people talked about, but it always seemed more like tingling to him. He smiled and kissed Cody's temple. He then laughed.
"No! No you can't! That's when I drive!" He wrapped his arms around Cody and shook his head. He kissed his nose. "Do you want me to drive?"

"Yes," Cody said. It was soon. Four dates in, but Dari was undeniably special. Cody was falling fast, and was beginning to recognize it. The guy was perfect in more than just looks.
"Do you want to drive? You can. You know where the Asian market is?"

"I do," Dari said with a smile, "and then you can look at my beautiful face without hitting any houses." He turned his head this way and that as if in a photo shoot, posing with his hand, then laughed again.
When they reached the market, nobody seemed to notice them, although they were the only two white folk in the joint. Dari passed by the savory foods (dinner was pizza, after all) and toward the ice cream cooler and the candy aisle. he smiled and nodded politely to a woman he stepped aside to let through. He hummed in thought. Toby had brought him to the supermarket, but never here.

Cody handed Dari the car keys with a grin. "Can't argue with that."
When they got there, Cody immediately took hold of Dari's hand. He looked in the ice cream cooler--but his attention was captured by the candy as soon as he caught sight of it. Kitkats in various flavors, botenrice, hichew... "What looks good to you?"

"Everything," Dari said with a smile. Of course he had to be wrong. Something in here was disgusting, he was sure of it. He was drawn to the filled marshmallows, of course. They were round and had little curls from their manufacturing, not at all like the normal American kind. Aww, look! Pocky in the shape of a heart!
There were also milk and floral candies, fizzy things, plenty of cola and ramune flavor, salted plum candies, various fruit gummies, jellies, and mochi. Then of course the pre-packaged snack cakes and sweet crackers.

"Alright, one of everything," Cody started filling the cart. They'd share everything, and that way there'd be less waste if they didn't like something. "We're going to be fat," he said, after a moment. He grinned. "Do you want ice cream?".

"Not one of each! Pick a flavor you like, just one of one!" Dari cried in surprise. He did pick up the pocky and marshmallows, though. He shook his head then. "With all of this, we don't need ice cream. Not unless you want to try it. I've had mochi ice cream at the sushi place. It's good if you let it sit a minute."

Cody snickered and selected a flavor of each snack variety instead, finishing. "There's so many things I haven't tried," he marveled. "We should come back another time and try the things we aren't trying now." He returned to Dari's side. "Did you see anything else you wanted?"

"Well, we're pretty much buying the whole section, so no, I think I'm good," he said with a laugh. He hoped privately that Cody would notice the pocky was heart-shaped with a divet cut down the top of the usual round shape. Maybe he would, maybe he wouldn't.
"Let me get this." He pulled out his wallet and started to count bills in the fold.

For the first time that day, Cody was frowning. And it was directed at Dari. "But the whole idea was so I could spoil you," he complained. "Alright. But I'm buying everything from the market."

"Sure, we can do that," Dari said. After all, there'd be less at the supermarket that they hadn't tried. "Besides, I'm the one who brought this place up in the first place."
He got into line of finished customers to wait their turn, then went up to the cashier and began to pile their goodies on the counter top.
"Oh, so much candy!" the woman cheerily said. She laughed slightly. Dari remembered the drawings on the wall from some little girl or boy, half in English and half in Japanese.
"We've never tried them," he said in Japanese, "We thought it might be fun."
The woman responded in kind, also in Japanese. "You speak Japanese!"
"I do!"
"Have you ever been to Japan?"
"I have."
The conversation went on and on as the woman manually typed in all of the prices, gave the final total and as Dari offered his card and signed. He loaded his arms with bags and bid the woman a good day before meeting up with Cody on their way out.

Through the conversation between the woman and Dari, Cody's eyes widened. Dari could speak Japanese? That wasn't a very common language of study in high school. His only offered Spanish and French, which he thought was unfortunate.
"So, you speak Japanese?" he began, when Dari met up with him. "Do you know any other languages?"

Uh, well, there was no use in lying. Who knew when he may have to speak some other language? It seemed an odd thing, but he'd done it right there without even thinking.
"Mm-hm. I know a few." Several. Quite a few, actually.

"I tried that rosetta stone program a while back, but it didn't really work for me," Cody admitted. "I got stuck with Spanish classes in high school, but I always thought it'd be fun to learn another language. Have you been to Japan, or did you learn in school?"
