Miyuki got up and went over to help Andarien get the water before he hurt himself. Besides as interesting as her great-grandfather was someone had to keep any eye on her little brother.

"Home,"
Daemon replied, "Soon."

He may have extra years now, but he knew if he didn't go soon he might not want to go at all. It had been so long and Gaia was a distance memory to him now.

Andarien looked up at Miyuki. "Can you pour some for me?" he asked her. "It's really hot and I'm thirsty!"

Earendil smiled at Daemon. "Then perhaps you could accompany us when we go to Tor Karad," he offered. "There is a portal there that could take you to your own world. We hope to continue from there to the Borderlands before heading to Gaia, but at least you would get home that way."

"Alright," Miyuki agreed grabbing the pitcher and a glass.

She carefully poured out the water for Andarien.

"What do you think of nineko?" Miyuki asked.

Daemon smiled at the idea, he knew the longer he stayed the less likely he would get home, so this suited him quite well.

"Would like that,"
he agreed with a nod.

Andarien rested his chin on the table and watched Miyuki pour the water. "Is that the really bright man?" he asked her without taking his gaze from the glass. "It hurts to look at him, even with the lenses. Kind of like looking at Lancaeriel but different."

He frowned. "And he was talking in that other language even after he was talking in this language first, and I couldn't understand what he said."

Miyuki looked thoughtful, she didn't know much about nineko so she couldn't say about his magical ability. Though she had heard at one point that he had Sight kind of and yet different from those in the royal family in the Eastland.

"That's because he would have a hard time telling ada and mommy in Common Elvish, it's not a language he knows well, and he was talking about what to do to get better lenses for you, that's complicated..." she paused and then added, "And I don't think there's a good word for 'clan' in elvish."

She handed him the glass of water and put the pitcher back.

Andarien blinked up at her, taking the glass with both hands. "What is a clan?" he asked her. "And where can we get better lenses for me?"

He would be the first to say that these ones were far from comfortable, and - though no one would make fun of him for it - after their weeks in the desert sun, he had the most horrible looking lens-tan on his face when he did take them off to sleep.

His sister was silent, not because she didn't want to answer the question, but because she was trying to figure out the best way to do so. She somewhat understood the concept of a clan, but only because she had been taught the bare basics a long time ago.

"A clan is a family that includes everyone, not just an ada or a mommy, but includes cousins, aunts and uncles from either the ada or mommy's side of the family. It depends on who's side of the family you're living with, and most of them all live together on the same piece of land called clan grounds. Like mommy is actually from the Winters clan, and back in Gaia our grandfather and grandmother, aunts, uncles and cousins all live on the same piece of land and have their own businesses and stuff."

Of course that was the simple way of putting it, it was far more complicated than that, which was why Miyuki added.

"Ninako said that there are shops in Gaia that can make lenses to filter out magic and that they will give us a discount because of the Yume clan, but I'm not sure why..."

Since she didn't know how all the clans were connected, or the fact there were old alliances like the way old noble houses worked. Nor did she know that her ninako had married a Yume or that her grandfather came from a different clan.

Andarien sipped his water slowly, but some of it still dribbled down his chin.

"Kind of like ... the Aldriches in New Kalin'grad?" he asked Miyuki, referring to Lothiriel and her family. "There's whole bunches of them, and aunts and uncles and brothers and sisters and ... all that. And they all live together."

He might have also suggested the Borderlands Aldriches, though he of course had never seen them, and only heard bits and pieces about them.

Miyuki had to think about it, when she thought about the absolute basic definition of a clan, that actually did make a lot of sense.

"I suppose so... yea," she nodded, "I mean you're right they do all live together."

And in a way the Aldrich was a clan with the way they kept close ties of their bloodlines but that wasn't something Miyuki knew all that well.

Andarien licked his lips. "Then why can't Nineko explain?" he questioned. "You make it sound easy enough."

He was quite astute, and picked things up easily, even complicated ideas ... as long as it had nothing to do with languages or fighting.

Miyuki tried her best to not give her little brother a look (even though she had already told him the reason why), he was after all much younger than her.

"Because Common Elvish isn't his first language, didn't you notice how he speaks it not quite right? Like the way it's broken or the words aren't quite in the right order?"

She let Andarien think about that for a moment before continuing.

"He doesn't know it well enough to talk about something like that without getting messed up."
PostPosted: Tue Feb 07, 2012 8:29 pm

"Then why didn't Nana or Ada translate?" the boy asked, not at all put off by Miyuki's tone. "They know I don't understand when people talk in other languages."

He finished off his water and held his glass up to Miyuki again. "More please," he said, smiling innocently at her.

Miyuki sighed and smile but did as he requested. Only because he did request it, she wondered maybe a bit if she was just impatience, because normally something like that was an incentive to try harder at language learning. She hated the idea she would have to wait for anyone to translate for her.

"Because really he was talking to them,"
Miyuki replied, "So they wouldn't have thought of translating it for you."

Andarien frowned at that. "But they were talking about me," he pointed out. "That's not very nice to talk about me but not to me, so that I can't hear it."

Of course, he was still used to seeing the world only one way, and in only one language.

"Andarien...." Miyuki sighed and shook her head, "He was talking about you because he was offering advice on you, and it's involved more words than he's capable of coming up with quickly so he spoke in Common Tongue. Mommy and ada weren't even talking about you, they were listening to his advice, and his advice was directed at them because they're the ones that have to go out and get you new lenses."

Now she was thinking her little brother was being unreasonable, she could hear how much trouble it gave their ninako to talk in the same language.

"They're not doing it on purpose."
