Andarien didn't answer Daemon. It wasn't that he was being rude, or at least, he wasn't trying to be; and it wasn't because Daemon was so bright (Lancaeriel after all was still brighter); but it was because, plain and simply, Andarien still did not understand any language other than Common Elvish, despite the lessons that had taken place over the past few weeks.

Daemon's smile didn't help Andarien to feel any better. He could hardly see it behind the glowing.

Frightened of this new and very bright person, he shuffled behind Lin, whose wings offered more protection than his father's long legs.

Daemon laughed, "He's a bit shy?"

Lin smiled and sort of shrugged because it was rare for him to meet new people, though he had been doing alright earlier.

"I think it's more that he doesn't understand you. He spent most of his life hearing Common Elvish and apparently he hasn't taken to Common Tongue all that well."

"Ah... hmmm... let's see," Daemon coughed a bit and thought for a moment, "It's not good..." he finally replied slowly in Common Elvish, "But passable. Never one needs it here that much, High Elven much better."

He stopped and chuckled at again.

"You think that's bad you should hear that little is left of my Japanese and Chinese, I'm going to have to practice again to get up to par. And goodness... let's not get into Latin, I probably can't make heads or tails of that one anymore!"

Andarien poked his head out again when he heard Daemon speaking in Common Elvish, his ears pricking up slightly.

"Nana," he said, tugging on Lin's shirt to get her attention. "Who is that, Nana? He's really bright ..."

He glanced at Daemon again, very very quickly, and then looked back up at Lin, blinking at her through the dark lenses.

"He's your Great-grandfather Daemon Winters, your Grandmother Kara's father," Lin explained to Andarien.

She really hoped that they could get better shades for Andarien when they go to Gaia, otherwise this might be difficult with several magic users running about the grounds. Especially since Andarien saw her grandfather as bright worried her. As far as she knew her grandfather didn't practice spell casting but he had quite a variety and strength in his Sight.

"Magic huh?" Daemon mused looking at Andarien, "Both a useful and problematic kind of Sight, thankfully I never developed that one. You know there's a shop or two in Gaia that creates lenses out of special material that filters out magic. It's not a common Gift though so requesting a custom pair can get a bit pricey but if you use your connections to the Yume clan they might give it to you for a discount seeing as.. well a good number of theirs have variations of Sight."

He spoke in Common Tongue because it was easier to get a complicated idea like Gaia and clans across in that language.

Neither of those explanations did Andarien any good: the first because he had only a vague idea what a grandmother was, and had never met any of his grandparents; and the second, because he quite plain and simply did not understand a single word of it.

He pouted up at Lin. "Nana! What's he saying?"

"Your great-grandfather was talking about better lenses for you," Lin replied.

Since really most of the explanation was meant for her and Earendil, since they had to be the ones to go get new shades.

Daemon shrugged, "You might want to ask him to refer to me in elvish instead, I don't want him to get confused with Long, and really the English way is kind of longish...."

He switched back to Common Elvish at this point now that he didn't have to explain anything complicated.

Andarien pouted at Daemon, but he didn't say anything further. He was a bit put out that the man knew Common Elvish but had chosen to speak a different language anyways. He still wasn't sure he liked him very much - both because of the language thing and because he glowed so brightly.

"I think it would be good to get something for him, made for him," Earendil spoke up, picking up Andarien and sitting down on the ground with the boy in his lap so that he couldn't hide behind Lin anymore. "I'm amazed at how long he went without us noticing that anything was going on ... now that we know about it, it's really clear how much it's really bothering him."

Quite the opposite of Lin, who couldn't sense magic in any way.

Daemon thought about it, he could tell that Andarien wasn't happy with him but for what reason he couldn't figure out.

"Maybe born with it he was," Daemon replied slowly and then shrugged, "Normal then!"

He had heard of cases like that, where children had been born with Sight from the crib and so didn't know any better and generally didn't mention it unless they had a question.

"But... most ask when something different seems," he added sheepishly.

Of course this wasn't Gaia, Gaia had so many race types that it was easy to see if people were different but not so much here where it was majority elven and to see a human like he was now was incredibly rare.

Earendil thought about it. "If Andarien was born with it," he murmured, "then there wouldn't be anything for him to ask about ... it wouldn't be anything new for him."

He glanced over at the rest of the group, who were all chatting with Nadya, Gion, Galdor and Galdor's wife and children. "The only reason it even came out was when we met Lancaeriel, over there," he pointed the woman out to Daemon. "Andarien said she was very ... glowy."
PostPosted: Fri Feb 03, 2012 7:51 pm

"Hmm?"

Daemon looked over at Lancaeriel and flinched, while she wasn't a brilliant glowing star like the way Andarien saw her, she had a bright aura, but that wasn't what was making him flinch. He wasn't use to seeing that much power or that complicated aura and the threads that surrounded her were numerous.

"Yes... can see why. Very old, very powerful."

He looked away, it was a giving him a headache again.

Earendil nodded thoughtfully. Daemon had confirmed what little they already knew about her: that she was old, very old, and that she had powers that none of them could even imagine.

"I think the only one of us who knows anything at all about her is Iorlas," he murmured, pointing her out to Daemon as well. "They've known each other for a very long time. For the rest of us, she's a bit of a mystery. Very pleasant, always willing to answer questions, but doesn't give a lot of information about herself when she does."

"Understandable," Daemon nodded at this, "Doesn't know people here."

He paused and then added, something he noticed after many decades of living here.

"And... magic like that rare."

"That's very true," Earendil agreed. "And you're right, magic like hers is extremely rare. I only know of one person who might come close to having her power, and that's only because of extenuating circumstances."

Rhea was born from the direct intervention of the Vala, it was natural for her to be more powerful than any other elf.

"Do you see many people out here, then?" he asked, curious about it. "My understanding is that Gion doesn't leave the plantation often ..."
PostPosted: Sat Feb 04, 2012 4:21 pm

"No, but use to map make Gion did... before here," Daemon replied, "Saw many things."

He smiled at that, he did miss that kind of life even if he was only a passenger, but that feeling only grew after Lorthiriel left. Next to Gion, he knew Lorthiriel perhaps the best but she had been a mischievous spirit that one.

"Use to pass time telling stories, heard lots."

Though there were a few places he wouldn't mind visiting again just because it had been so long. It wasn't like he couldn't stand to age a few years after all, but it would probably all be done by portal because he still wanted to spend time with the grandbabies...

"Traveling, like us," Earendil grinned. "Of course. Any thoughts of traveling again? Now that you're not in the sword?"

Now that was something he never thought he'd say.

They were interrupted as Sylvar came back outside with a large pitcher of water and several glasses. "Water, anyone?" he called out, bringing it all to one of the tables that was in the yard.

Andarien licked his lips and scrambled to his feet. Even without understanding the words, he knew what water was, and he wanted it. "Waterrrrr," he murmured to himself as he ran to the table and tried to climb up on it.
