"Ah, mine's always been, at least until recently, well cooked meat... Especially steak." He sighed wistfully, then grinned with amusement at the plate she had helped herself to. "Finally! A woman who really knows how to eat!"

Her offer reminded Gaius' muscles quite suddenly of how rather tired they were after days working on construction, and nights spent on the chairs. He nodded, rolling a shoulder and feeling the tight muscles. "Actually, I think I'd appreciate that. Just let me load up again!"

Turning back to the table, Gaius piled a couple chocolate cookies atop his already filling plate along with a few other choice sweets. Then, he made for one of the cups and, grabbing the ladle from the milk bowl, filled it up with the thick creamy liquid. Those in hand and leash secured, he turned back to Emelyn and smiled. "Lead on, Macduff!"

Vixen, at his side, wanted to explore more, but didn't fight the tug of the leash, instead positioning herself beside him to follow the hedgehog.

Liamh cleared his throat and glanced at Marshall, glad for a slight distraction. He moved his foot away from the dog under the table. "What's with all the dogs, anyway? There was a shaggy beast on my doorstep this morning, had a hell of a time catching him..."

His attention was sucked back to Antony as she edged closer, feeling the somewhat... predatory... vibe she gave off. "Oh, a threat, are you?" he tried not to lean back in his chair. "I'll be on my highest guard then. I'd hate to suddenly find myself at the mercy of one far more devious and powerful than myself... Actually, wait, that sounds like fun."

"Hmm, sharing..." Liamh furrowed his brows and glanced down, shooting her a look surreptitiously. He patted down all his pockets... he hadn't brought anything, not expecting to need to barter for silverware. "I don't suppose the line, 'breath from my lungs' would work in this situation, would it?" He scratched the back of his neck under the confining hood and gave a lopsided grin.

Emelyn laughed- a mere huff of a thing that was partially incredulous, partially amused. She'd never known a man that would tell her she 'knew how to eat' or to call her 'Macduff' (which conjured up images of the crime dog- she didn't know if that was what he meant or not... she wasn't about to ask). Or, rather, she hadn't ever known a man that would say things like that to her... that she could still like. As she led them to an empty table, she found herself shaking her head in wonder. She hadn't taken the statements in a negative way- perhaps... she thought, because he hadn't meant them that way. At least, that was how it seemed. In any case, she wondered why she wasn't offended, but didn't delve too deeply into it. For whatever reason.

She sat, thankful for bench seating, and Reu contented himself with a leisurely paw-around the cafeteria, looking for stray bits that had fallen to the floor. Em kept an eye on him, but otherwise let him roam. A 24-7 heel command was a bit much to ask of a dog- especially one that had spent the formative first months with his owner in the great, expansive wild.

"So." Em said when she had seated. "Fingers crossed." She sunk a fork into the top of her pumpkin pie slice about an inch from the pointed end, and let it sever the piece downward. The crust gave little resistance, and the piece stuck to the tines with a gooey, pumpkiny goodness that Em was only just beginning to remember. She smiled then, a hopeful thing, closed her eyes, and levied the piece into her mouth.

"I wouldn't mess with her, Liamh. I saw her beat the s**t out of a kid at Halloween. From the sound of it, he had it coming. Buutt...Yeah. Now she has a knife and fork. Do the math." Marshall said, half jokingly, as he looked up at Liamh as he scratched the dog behind its ears.

"...You named him ********? Hee hee...Classy." Marshall chuckled. His attention turned to the entry way. Gaius and some familiar hedgehog woman were talking, and they both had dogs.

"Maan...Every one got a dog. So uncool." Marshall muttered, still scratching ******** behind the ears. He wasn't sure why Liamh just didn't open the stupid DVD case with both hands like a normal person, but far be it for him to complain.

Gaius shuffled along behind Em, Vixen at his side. Setting his food down on the table, it took a bit of maneuvering of his feet over the bench before he could sit down across from her.

He watched Reuben run off, then looked at Vixen, who gave him a hopeful, pathetic look that obviously said she wanted to go too. Gaius chewed on his lower lip, considering a moment, before giving in and unhooking the leash from her collar. With a gleeful bark, Vixen lept to her feet and bounded off. "You behave yourself!" Gaius called after her, like an over-protective parent.

Turning his attention back to Em, he raised an eyebrow curiously. "Fingers crossed?" he querried, wondering what she meant. He lifted another cookie to his mouth, somehow his attention caught by the girl and the tension that seemed to increase as the fork was lifted. But why? It was just pie!

It tasted like pumpkin, sweetened by condensed milk and sugar and some nutmeg. That was the first step- it was recognizable, familiar. But did she like it? She rolled it along her tongue and pressed the pie to the roof of her mouth. Emelyn manipulated the crust, along with a bit of the orange stuff itself, to her back molars and she chewed it. Then she gave herself a moment to make a decision. She even let the hedgehog out of its back 'storage closet' of her consciousness, and she 'asked' if it liked it. And then, the moment of truth as the sensation of truth travelled to her brain and returned with a message in a millisecond:

This is good. This is very good.

It was not quite the pie of her childhood- and not solely for the sake of a different cook. That, too, was true of course- her Grandfather rarely used quite so much nutmeg in his concoction. But mostly, it was the heightened peak of hedgehog senses mixed with her own, very human love of baked goods. Hedgehogs are omnivores, and they will eat... pretty much anything. Given, they're more predisposed to the raw and the grub-like, but human made concoctions are eerily near and dear to the hedgie heart... and taste buds.

"Mmm," she explained, opening her eyes at last, "I was afraid that I'd not enjoy pie as much, now that I have the hedgehog senses as well. But it's... different. And I honestly don't know how healthy it is for me to be eating, come to think of it..." she speared another bite, considering it upon the air a moment, "but it's still so good..." before placing that bite in her craw as well.

"I'd listen to the boy..." She stated with a grin before she deftly reached under the table and with a quick motion, a leafy sprig was plucked from his arm. As she brought it up in front of her face to inspect, she motioned to the knife, "Tell me what kind of plant and you can have the knife."

Antony turned her attention to the younger boy and her dog, cracking a smirk, "He was originally named Cupid, and I felt ******** suited him better. Plus I always said if I got a dog, I'd name it ******** just because... But as for why people got dogs, I have no clue." Shrugging, she went back to examining the leaf, "At least you're not poison ivy..."

The dog's tongue lolled out of his mouth as his tail stump swished happily, dusting the floor quite efficiently.

The horse-man watched curiously, neck unconsciously craning forward a bit, as Emelyn tasted her pie, as her animal-like yet eerily human face passed through phases of expression, sometimes unsure, sometimes analytic, and finally, pleasure. His expression remained confused until she explained the reason for her uncertainty. “Aaaaah… I understand that. I’ve been dealing the same with the horse’s tastes, and I’m not even as changed as… er, well, I’m not that far along, yet.” He lowered his eyes and rubbed at the mane along the back of his neck self-consciously. “Not that you look animal-ish or anything!”

Anxiety worked with the stream of cookies he’d been consuming to make Gaius’ throat feel very sticky. Reaching for his cup, he lifted it to his lips, the semi-cool liquid running over his tongue. It was particularly thick, whole milk apparently, and somehow tasted a bit off, different from the little milk cartons readily found in the drink dispenser. Gaius licked his lips, wiping away the moustache and regarded the half-emptied cup with raised eyebrows. “Huh, even the milk’s pretty rich.”

He set the cup down and looked back up at the hedgehog woman across from him, regaining his friendly smile. “I’m glad you can still eat it. I think, of everything the labs could do to us, stealing away the ability to enjoy pie would be the greatest crime of all.”

Liamh grinned at Marshall "Yeah, heheh, you're probably-"

"Yeeaowch!"

He jumped in his seat, staring at Antony and the sprig with trepidation. "... ow!" he added for good measure. He glanced at Marshall, then back to Antony. He hadn't told Marshall yet.... he scrunched up one eye, trying not to look sheepish.

".... I... don't know." He shot a look at Antony, half-glare, half-congratulatory. She'd gotten him over a big barrel. "Something like... well, it's not ivy... poison or otherwise." He stared at the leaf in her hand. "Er, at least I think. It's... Something kinda viney." He crossed his arms and glanced away. "I've been trying not to think about it."

He looked out of the corner of his eye at her, and at Marshall. ".... why, do you have any idea?" his voice turned less defensive and more inquisitive. "I mean.... I guess I ought to know, if I'm gonna... you know." With a sigh, he adjusted his glasses and pulled the hood back, showing the leafy tendrils sprouting from his head. "Any ideas? I'm not much into horticulture..."

((the leaf in question))

Marshall stared at Liamh's face for a moment. He was, explainably, surpirsed. He was missing half of his face, for cripes sakes! But another thing shocked him even more: people were turning into PLANTS as well?! Wait a second...Bingo! Finally putting two-and-two together, Marshall realised Alec was both being turned into an Animal AND a Plant!

"Of course sharks didn't have LEAVES." he grumbled, feeling like a total retard for not figuring that out. But then, he realised: Alec wasn't here. Liamh was.

"Um...I've never been one for botany..." he said, blushing with a forced chuckle. This was, undoubtedly, awkward.

"Well I guess it does hurt," she murmured to herself, making it obvious that finding the answer to that question had been the reason for her plucking the leaf off in the first place. A lopsided smile of apology flitted onto her muzzle, "I suggest calling and asking the labs... Usually they'll tell you if you haven't pissed them off yet."

Her eyes widened when he pulled back his hood, and she grimaced somewhat, "Oh man, ******** short end of the stick there..." Hell, she had yet to see a completed plant serum, so she was slightly worried for the boy.

Liamh glanced at Marshall. "Sharks?" he said, nonplussed. "You mean that Alec kid with the accent? He doesn't have leaves, does he?"

Looking at Antony, he nodded. "I thought about calling them. I think i just need to swallow my stubbornness. I'd sort of convinced myself before this that if I didn't know, it would somehow be less... real." He shrugged. "Kinda bit me in the arse, so you're right, it's not like i've got anything to lose by knowing."

He shot a look at Marshall, then back at the squirrel woman. "Maybe too much to lose by not knowing." He brought his plant-hand up and looked at it, flexing his tendrilly fingers. It still felt so freaking weird. Well, not like he was going to get anywhere by hiding it now. He rolled the sleeve up a bit, showing off the corded vines that his muscle structure had become, trying to work the sleeve carefully over the leaves. He wasn't in quite the right frame of mind to rip them off again just now.

He nodded over at the silverware. "Well, since I'm not being a dork about using the hand - sorry 'bout that Marshall - I guess i don't need something to open the box with..." he grinned a bit lopsidedly at Antony. "Since i couldn't ante up the info for the trade anyway, you kinda had me there."

Emelyn's smile was indulgent- obviously there were worse terrors that the labs could dole out as easily as they had this Christmas feast... but that wasn't the point. This was a pleasant meal, and pleasant conversation with an equally pleasant man. Em wasn't willing to jeapordize that for the sake of a truth that everyone already knew and agreed with.

"I'm assuming then, that the wings are an ...unrelated addition?" She took another bite and let it sift through her hedgehog teeth with a pleasing 'skoosh'. She hoped Gaius didn't mind the inquiry into his dual serum- but she was curious. Recently, she'd seen more of a disparity in Moreau's satisfaction with 'regular' animals, and pure, unadulterated serums. He was, for all Emelyn could see, delving into something even darker than the foul genetic game he'd already begun: selective creationism. Were it not for the glory of pie, the thought alone may very well have soured her tongue.
PostPosted: Wed Dec 27, 2006 2:55 pm

Gaius snorted distastefully, the mentioned wings twitching and folding back as if embarrassed of themselves. The nature of his serum assignment wasn’t one of his favorite topics mainly because it inevitably lead to Sabin and all the trouble he’d dealt with because of him. He glowered down at a gingerbread man in his hand as he spoke. “Yeah… Kinda. That crazy white-haired doctor got it into his head to make a Pegasus… and I’m the one that got stuck with it.” Snap went the arm. “He thinks he can control me, the way he does that dragon…” His expression darkened. “But I’m nothing like Zach!”

He sighed, the tense lines in his face fading as he regained himself, looking up apologetically at Em, then back down at the cookie in his hand. “Sorry, didn’t mean to burst there… It’s… I guess I have a hard time… getting used to it. I don’t think I’ll ever accept it, but it’s like trying to live after getting laid off. Make adjustments and try to get by…” He munched on the cookie, the sweet taste restoring a measure of his quickly-shifting moods. “I’ve been told I’m wasting my life always living with a hope that tomorrow, by some miracle, we might be rescued, or somehow escape. That I should settle down, forget what’s gone, and try to make a new life here. It just seems… somehow lazy, to live like that. Like it’s easier to let it go and just accept the way things are.”

“Sorry, I’m probably ruining the mood of the conversation with too much thinking,” he apologized with a small shake of his head. He hadn’t meant to interrupt her reunion with pie. The milk was sipped at again to wet his throat. Too much thinking, but none about what shouldn’t be said in an encounter like this. Who was he to assume Em even wanted to hear any of this?

She put her fork down, laying it to the plate with a precise klink. Her porcine muzzle tilted down at the table for what seemed like a long time, keeping her expression in shadow. It was only after Gaius apologized that she lifted up her eyes to the man. Emelyn's eyes spoke before she did, and they said 'I understand'. She couldn't find words to use, and didn't know where to start- how to tell him that she understood his dilemna, and that she faced it even still, after all this time. And then, also... a question so absurd in its delicacy danced in her mind. What was 'kosher', what was 'correct', for a conversation with a man you've only just met. It answered itself with only a few moments in time... and some uncommon sense. This was Hell Island, and they were two previously normal folk being transformed into the stuff of fiction by a madman with seemingly endless resources. Miss Manners had no bearing here.

"I haven't accepted it." She placed both of her hands in her lap, her eyes, as her voice, unwavering, "I've been here for well over a year. Well," she said, reaching up for a moment to brush a spine away from her eyes, "Nearing a year and a half, I'd guess. I have moved on from my past life, who I was and what I was close to... mostly for the sake of being able to wake up every morning. But I don't think that I'd want to accept it here." She'd since dropped her hands back into her lap, and now, for the first time since the start of her seemingly out-of-place response... she let her eyes drop, too.

"I've been waiting for that same miracle. But I don't think it will ever come." Her eyes lifted again. "We are all that we are."
