themightyjello The real issue is those battery covers. Last time I changed the battery in my car I had to break the thing just to get it off because it would not let go. I completely agree with you, they're quite the pain in the a**, but they're also rather dangerous. Especially when I'm not paying attention. I'll grab one up with my junk hook, and pick it up. The cover is far too slick for my hook to get a good grip on it, so it will fall, and straight down toward my feet. One of those... "OH SHI---!" And one of these... "AH, ******** MY LIF---!" You know.

That's your fault, then.
Changing oil, a tire, brakes, and a battery are pretty simple and don't really take much more than a bit of common sense. If I was asking you to replace a transmission or replace an AC unit in a 2004 Ford Taurus, I wouldn't expect you to know how to do it. XD
@Jello: Usually you just have to squeeze them and then pull. Depending on if they're corroded or not from an acid leak, it usually is best to get rid of them all-together, though. Unless you're like me who gets rid of both and has no way to tell which is positive and which is negative in the middle of the pitch-black night time.

Herra Karhu Like the ******** I was paying attention. rofl And this is the problem. Hell, when my ignition locked up and I had to have it replaced (that's the unit assembly next to the steering wheel that the key goes into) I sat right next to the guy and watched what he did... hell, I bought the parts at the NAPA across the street and did half of the work myself so he'd give me a discount on the labor. I just needed him to show me what I was doing wrong. @ Battery Covers: Well, the one I had on there I think was fitted wrong, since it was the manufacturer cover and I'd replaced the battery once or twice already since I'd gotten the car. It was really tight and the connection points jutted out a little too far for their own good. I just couldn't pry the thing out far enough to slip them under the case and slide it the rest of the way off, and it was one solid piece so it's not like I was missing a release or something in the dark. I spent like an hour and a half in a parking lot at night with a pair of pliers tearing chunks out of it so that I could get it open. Ended up throwing the thing away and just strapping the new battery down.

Oh wait... ah ha. You were talking about those diode covers or connection covers or caps or whatever they're called. The ones you can just screw off.
No, I mean like a hard plastic BOX that fits over the battery and is bolted down to parts of the car you wish you have the hands of a 9 year old girl in order to reach.
[edit] Also, positive is always on the right, negative is always on the left.

xD I figured the right and left thing out later on. In-fact, I think it was two days after it died in the middle of a pitch-black trailer park that we learned about that in automotives, which really made me facepalm.
Yeah, I know what you're talking about now. That's a b***h. XD
But man.. I felt absolutely ridiculous. Middle of winter and my jeep dies out, which kind of pissed me off because it's a 2006, just had the battery replaced a month before, and was in for a tune-up at the school's auto-shop not long before that. There I am, walking through the trailer-park to find someone I know, and finally I find my friend Alex's trailer. So he brings his car over there, and he goes "I don't know how to jump a car... you do it. Seriously man.. I'm afraid." So I take the cables, hook his car up, and then I was like "FFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFF-"
Cause all I have aside from the color coding and the now obtained knowledge that negative is on the left and vice versa, are little, itty-bitty notches that are barely engraved on the battery. What made this worse was the fact that his car was a little pontiac G6 and I'm driving a jeep on a 4" lift, so the lights weren't reaching the battery. So I take these cables, lift one in each hand, hold my breath, and touch both of them to the battery. God, you have no idea how relieved I was when I got it right and my friend opened his eyes and went "... Are you dead yet? I'm not blind from the flash."

Ah, new cars.
I would have to be a far richer man than I am now to want to pay for one of those.
As it stands I'm driving a '93 with 186,000 miles on it. I paid 3000 for it 100k miles ago and since then I've probably put in about 700 dollars worth of replacement parts (all purchased and attached myself... like the starter, alternator, ignition, spark plugs, spark plug cables, headlight from when I hit a deer, etc.) and probably 1200 dollars in regular maintenance (oil, tires, antifreeze, battery). And then likely around 7000 worth of gas went into it. 100,000 / 30 = 3,300 gallons of gas at an average of 2.00 per gallon over the life of the car.
At this point the cost of the car itself is a joke. Even the replacement parts for it only put it halfway to the cost of gas.
I've been driving that car for almost 6 years now and it still runs fine. When it dies, I'll buy another one out of pocket and drive it for 6 years without ever having to worry about car payments.
