After what had felt like nine million years searching for clothes, Kevin lit up once he spotted the arcade. He sped up, not quite at a run, and then turned to look back. "C'mon, Toby!" he went straight for the coin exchange machine, putting in a ten dollar bill and getting quarters back.
"What game do you want to play?"

"Oh! Uh. Honestly, I haven't played many arcade games in my time." He was well over the age to play in them by the time they started showing up, and already immortal by the time they were really popular. Video games had mostly been Dari's thing to introduce him to, and that was well after the advent of the arcade.
Dari put in a five dollar bill of his own and started surveying the selection.

Kevin looked over the games, and pointed to a two player shooter game. "C'mon," he invited. "Cool! We get to kill zombies." He put in four quarters and beckoned Toby over. "I only know games on my 3ds," he said. "So we can be game stupid together."

"Well, maybe," Toby reasoned. "That depends on how accurate this thing is." He looked the gun controller over as Kevin put in his quarters and the game started.
"You hold it like this," Toby said. He showed Kevin his grip on the gun. Maybe some day his human friends would think he was cool for it.

Kevin took the gun and held it the way Toby showed him. He smiled. "And then you pull the trigger?" he asked. "Its kind of funny, killing zombies with a gun..." He shot one in the leg, it was still coming. "Aren't they already dead?"

"Yup. Shoot off-screen to reload." Just because he hadn't played them didn't mean he didn't know how they worked.
"Well guns and chainsaws are the trope," Toby said, blowing the head off of a brownish-green thing that looked less like a newly-dead person and more like a mummy in his opinion. "'Destroy the brain' and all."
"Zombies aren't dead," Dari suddenly piped up, having decided to watch the pair rather than play his own game, "They were dead once, and something reanimated them. They're not alive, but they're obviously not dead. 'Undead' is the term people use most often."
"Right. Except we've never seen anything like this in reality."
"Right."

Kevin shot off screen and grinned. For not playing games, Toby sure knew how to play them. "Trope?" he echoed. "Not dead?" He looked to Dari, blinking. Zombies had been dead but weren't dead--what???
"You guys are so cool," he said, and shot a zombie in the head.

"Like the common pop-culture understanding," Toby said, and watched Kevin blow the head off of a zombie. He laughed. "Nice!"
"Undead. Exactly. In theory certain kinds of parasites create 'zombies' but none are interested in humans," Dari added.

"Cool. I like when they die," He shot another one and grinned. He took another shot and missed. He looked at Toby. "Can I work for you guys? Do you get to do things like this?"

Toby and Dari shared identical snickers. Well, he was Unseelie, born to drag people to their deaths.
"No," Toby said, "I mean 'no we don't turn the world into a shooting gallery.' You get a gun, but it's generally frowned-upon to use it for anything but self-defense." On occasion it had been known to make a negative entity stand down.

Kevin didn't seem disappointed. Hadn't they had guns when they'd come talked to him? He shot at more zombies, and looked to Toby then. "Can I work for you guys anyway?" he asked. "Dari, do you want to play a game with me next?"

"Not until you're twenty-three," Toby said. He wasn't sure where the kelpie would be then, after those years of experience. He might have just wanted to work for the Bureau because he knew they had guns. It happened with teenagers. That was why there was such a high starting age.
"Sure," Dari said with a nod, "but you're doing pretty good."
"GYUH." Jumping zombies?! Okay, they'd totally deviated from zombies. They were going all-out goblins here, rotting or not.

"Twenty three?!" Kevin's eyes widened, and he stared at Toby in horror. "But that's forever!" He shot at another zombie, but they'd started to jump and dodge. "They're cheating!" he declared, eyes narrowing at the game. He kept shooting at the zombies.

"Trust me, 23 is not 'forever.' I'm in my seventies!" Anyway, Dari was in at 2 or so, but everyone had different measurements of age. This kelpie was a teenager, through and thorough.
"They're not cheating, they're defending themselves!" he said then, "They can't just let us win!" A bloody streak ran across Toby's screen as he was hit, and then it came. The first boss. An enormous, hulking, muscular zombie twice their size. "Oh, s**t!"

"That's like ten years from now!" Kevin complained. Seventies? Woah. Toby was ancient! "So when I'm in my seventies, I can have your job?" he asked.
"They're supposed to be stupid! They're not supposed to defend themselves." He stared at the boss in disbelief. "Are they cheating now?"
