On infantry, Phalanxes are actually the best all-around defence (for Gauls) if you don't know what you're facing. Look at it this way:

1 Haeduan and 1 Druidrider cost 5 wheat upkeep, which is frankly the only part that matters.
5 Phalanxes also cost 5 wheat upkeep.

The Haeduan and Druidrider give you 165 (115 + 50) infantry defence, and 220 (55 + 165) cavalry defence.
The Phalanxes give you 200 infantry defence, and 250 cavalry defence.

Unless you know exactly what force you're expecting (which seems intensely unlikely), you really have a choice between balancing your defences with Phalanxes, or stacking them one way or the other with the cavalry.

Hey, Evil... you still need those 20 defenders? I'm building my second settler, and once I get the third done I've got my eye on a well balanced spot for a second village. I'd only need them for a couple days to cranny up to max, then I could send 'em back to you.

I'll make #1 in the morning, so I can send him over about 12 hours from now (I would give a time, but I have no idea what time zone you are in). Let me know if that's okay, otherwise I can definately wait another day or two. I should probably build some more defensive troops before I set up in my new village anyways sweatdrop You never know...

I live in Michigan, USA which is in the Eastern Time Zone, currently observing Daylight Savings time, and operating at GMT -4, if memory serves correctly.

At the time of this post it is 00:15 Friday the 15th of June. If you send him over, my 112 swordsman can keep him company, while my Thunder roam around pillaging.

I have little patience for infantry, despite their higher attack/resource ratio. Though, if I get enough villages, I'll probably specialize through armory/blacksmith upgrades. One town (probably the 15 wheater) will be a Thunder pumping machine, another will be a Phalanx factory (probably The Hornburg), and maybe I'll let Edoras take up the swords. I'm still trying to work this out.
When you destroy buildings, say the academy, do you lose the benefits that it gave? For instance, I research everything possible with an academy up and down, then with a lvl10 MB I sack it. Do I lose said researches or no?

If not I'm seriously considering turning Nisroc into my capital so I can get wheat fields past lvl10 and turn Hatar into a giant resource/unit pump. Sack academy and maybe something else, get enough spots for a great barracks as well as the 25% clay/iron/wood buildings. Then send my units over to Nisroc or does that count as reinforcement? Even if it's your own town?

I don't know about the town to town reinforcements, but once all your units are researched, you can safely demolish the academy. I think the same goes for the armory, etc.

I am still incredibly torn. I would easily settle for the 9 wheater if the 15 wheater was not 2 squares away, meaning an aggressive player will likely settle immediately next door. And I would like a 15 wheater at some point, just not for my 2nd village; I don't really have the resource output to support it yet.
How many culture points do you need for a third village?
Help, too hard of a decision gonk crying

Essentially 6000(you keep the 2000 from the first village)

Go for the 9-wheater. I'm working on preparing for my second village, and if you leave that 15 wheater, I'll build up my next base there. Unless that would make you nervous?

I'm looking for places like that to use as military bases, and even if someone else takes the place, I'm certain I could easily conquer it. Does that make things easier?

On the other hand, if you wanted to do things the other way around, I could settle the 9-wheat. It's up to you. I really, REALLY want to spread out my empire across as much ground as possible. Makes conquest easier, defense harder.

As you can see, I'm not much for defense. Tell me what your plan is. So that you know, I'm not very good at raiding, but I'm very good at breaking open fortresses. I love swarms. twisted

I'd be careful about just where you get a 15wheater Alexi, it is -completely- useless for any other resource, so you find yourself shipping from on village to another quite a bit. And by travian law we can't help you that much.

I'll send whatever they allow me though. Where exactly are these two plots of land you two are looking at?

*winks* Well, duh. Of course it's useless. But I'm not there for anything but food. I'm building my other bases for the sole purpose of housing soldiers, didn't I tell you that? I want the wheat not because I want to build up a base, I want the wheat so that I can hold men. I probably won't upgrade much of anything except for a warehouse and granary for quite some time. I can move it slowly, so long as it holds troops.

I'm evil like that.

I know, I'm just saying if its to far out then your merchants may not be able to carry resources fast enough for a desired production.

I know I may not give the impression, but I'm really quite a patient fellow.

The only problem is that that often makes me slower to grow in games like this, so we'll see. I'm trying to keep up, at least my army size keeps me competitive, or, if nothing else, useful.

Ah see, I'd be smashing my face into a wall if it took 30hrs to ship some resources to my town not including the trip back, hell sometimes the 22minutes it takes to ship resources isnt fast enough o.<

Then I suppose having 2/3 of your army away for 4-5 days would drive you nuts as well? xd It's kind of annoying, but it means I don't have to check as much for raiding. It's almost a relief.

Thanks for the reassurance. I really would prefer the 9-wheater, so my village has at least a chance at self-sufficiancy. The 15-wheater is at 58, -151. There are enough oases (I had to google the spelling on that - it still doesn't look right) that we could each have 3 if we split them right. However, though the villages in the immediate aren't too big, the other members of their alliance are... I don't know how that would work out in squabbling over oases.

But thanks, it would be great having you as a neighbour to my new village. heart
