Hiei gave a look and rolled his eyes a little. Why was Kurama being difficult? He knew exactly what the Koorime liked and did not like. Why did he have to ask? "Just get me something," he snapped, bringing his elbow to rest on the table so he could lean his cheek against his fist. It was not something he normally did, but he was getting a little mentally (and maybe physically) exhausted from all the playing around they'd taken to.

And being tired often gave one funny thoughts. He imagined that Yuusuke and Kuwabara were at the table with them, banging their knees up and slamming their fists down like he'd seen them do one holiday while waiting for Kurama and the girls to bring the large, golden and steaming poultry in.

"Idiots," he mused to himself. Did he actually miss them? No. That was a ridiculous idea.

Hm. Hiei was definitely demanding but hardly particular. So what dessert, then? It was Christmas and all... so maybe a fruit cake would be appropriate? No, those tasted terrible. So, on the same train of thought, maybe a chocolate cake? Perfect.

The sad thing was that he would have to make it from scratch. So he searched a bit to find a decent recipe book, somehow managed to find one, continued on to find the correct page, and finally fetched everything it called for, including the proper utensils, mixing bowl, and cake pan.

Kurama carefully read the instructions twice before reading a third time as he added the ingredients into the bowl, stirred, and poured the contents into the pan. At the very least, he could make the treat enjoyable. It could serve as a prequel to his 'apology.' But anyway, once finished with the excessively long process, he placed the pan into the oven which he had, of course, remembered to preheat.

((Not an amazing post, but at least it's something. I've not been good at writing, lately. Been wasting all my time on art.))

Hiei was one who was quickly bored, of course and so he became impatient yet again. "Kurama, if I didn't know any better, I'd think you were trying to irritate me." The Koorime stood up, stretching a bit and grunting at the pops and cracks coming from his back. It really had been giving him trouble lately. And of course he had way too much pride to even ask anyone to straighten him out.

The Jaganshi wandered a bit, not even taking the time to tell Kurama personally he would be out for a little walk while he waited. He had tried to deliver the message through the Eye, but he was bothered by a headache as well and really didn't care enough. He wandered the corridor, touching the wall as he went and leaving his own little '******** you' to Kasai in the form of burn marks on the lovely wallpaper and furniture. When he felt it had been long enough (and when he caught a whiff of chocolate), he headed back. A fresh bundle of roses had materialized while he was gone on a counter near the door and he stared at them before turning his gaze upward as if at an unseen watcher. Something was going on. He growled and grabbed the roses as he walked in.

"Hey, Jacque, do you smell chocolate?" Night sniffed the air again and sighed.

Yes, the vampire thought, along with burning wallpaper. "I do, and you can't have any. It's for the fox and the-"

"Don't rub it in," the girl whined. "Just 'cause you don't like food doesn't mean you should be mean about it."

"Whatever."

"You'll get whatever, albino."

Irritating the sensitive half-Koorime certainly hadn't been the intention, but nonetheless, he had succeeded. The two were practically opposites, so naturally their senses of humor clashed. Assuming that Hiei had one, aside from that warped, sarcastic, violence-loving one.

Anything that may have come to mind to voice was better left unsaid. In such a disagreeable mood, the shorter would take any of his comments wrongly—being that most had double meanings—or simply be offended. This particular bad mood was good for one thing, in a way, as was apparent when the fox tasted the distinctive scent of burning wood in various forms, as well as other meaningless trinkets, in the air.
However there was a powerful downside. Kasai's displeasure could make the rest of their stay a living Hell. As it was, the demoness had been too lenient, considering her position. This continued to make him wonder her purpose for bringing them there. Neither Hiei nor himself had been given a clear cut answer as to... well, why. Why had the demoness lured them there? Why them? Why did she think this whole ordeal was worth it?

His thoughts were interupted by Hiei's growl and more with the sweet chocolate aroma the cake gave off. By the smell alone, he could tell that it had been baked long enough, so he took the pan from the oven and set it on the counter to cool so that frosting could later be added. Of course he had remembered to make it, so it now was chilling to more a thickness in the refrigerator.

Kurama paid attention to the fire apparition as he walked in, and soon a much more generous amount the the roses he held. He was not the type to grab something like that for no good reason. Under any normal circumstances, something so pretty would be repulsive to Hiei. There had to be a logical explanation and the fox could find no specific one. No matter what it may be, such a thing made for an excellent opportunity to tease.

"Care to explain the roses?" To the point and amazingly with no undertones. Lucky Hiei.

Hiei stared at Kurama, like he was doing so often lately and set the roses down on the dining table. The Koorime brings in something that the fox is known to love and he has to explain himself? "Don't you like roses?" he asked sarcastically but in a tone that asked, 'don't I know you well enough?' Before he got his answer, he sat back down at the table, looking careless or at least bored. But that was normal. So to amuse himself he concentrated some hot ki in the tip of his index finger and began to burn lines into the wood. Hiei actually enjoyed the smell of burnt wood. Most burning things didn't smell good. Like bodies. But wood was nice.

It wasn't long before he had gotten so absorbed in the activity that he actually wrote out the hiragana (messily, but oddly cute) for baka and the katakana for cake.

His eyebrow ticked and he slumped a little. What the hell was he doing? Was he a child? No. This place was making him crazy. After the cake he would have to take a hot shower. Maybe that would clear his head and keep him sane.

"You know I love roses... but do you also know what bringing them to me might imply? I do not think of you as clueless, you know," said Kurama, in a way questioning the other, though it could be taken rhetorically. Either way, it didn't matter, though the first could be more on the awkward side to explain.

The red-head kept his gaze loosely on Hiei, not enough to stare, but enough to see his face and the words he wrote. Handwriting said many things about a person and gave off a... childishly innocent aura, if that makes sense. The words were very simple and written carefully, but they looked as if they were written by a child practicing their syllables for the first time. It was almost stylistic... but that would fit, considering what the writing instument was. Or maybe the bored kitsune was just analyzing things too deeply. The cake needed to hurry up and cool enough.

And his mind wandered back to the flowers. How ironic that the one time he took Hiei as being more serious, he was actually bringing them as a gift. It just didn't fit his attitude at all. The fox might actually have been able to get away with a smartass comment, but he hadn't taken the perfect chance.

((*screams*))

Hiei offered his most 'are you serious' and 'what the hell' look to the fox. It lasted a good five seconds before the Jaganshi blinked and tightened his jaw. "You're insane," he said simply, looking at the wood before him. He realized that Kurama could see what he had written and he chanced a quick glance up before burning the words away with his whole hand. He then looked at Kurama almost threateningly, as if daring the other to say anything about it.

He moved the roses away from him. They were fresh and smelled strongly. But honestly that didn't bother him anymore because staying around Kurama's ningen home made him used to the smell of flowers and other plants. The one he liked was one that Kurama had only grown once. He wasn't sure what it was, but it smelled minty. He liked that smell a lot and actually stole a leaf from it.

Hiei shook his head. "Is it ready yet? I know you're trying to poison me and everything, but if I'm going to die then the cake doesn't have to be perfect."

He rested his cheek against his fist, which made him look very childish and blinked slowly. He let his gaze wander and when they came to the roses he wrinkled his nose and made a sound in the back of his throat like he had a bad taste in his mouth.

Kurama failed to see how what he said brought on that conclusion, but with a mildly noticable smirk, he admitted to himself that it was true, in certain aspects much more than others. But a level of insanity could not be denied, though he did have the common sense not to push Hiei by speaking of the writing. Why waste his time teasing the Koorime with something so miniscule when a much better opportunity to do so could come up?

"I can't say I share your opinion. I think you'll agree that I should at least make your dessert enjoyable before I kill you. I owe you that after all we've been through." The fox had not wanted to say anything that would annoy him, but in this case, couldn't resist. He had truly asked for those words, if not something worse. Worse like... a comment on how horribly cute he looked while unknowingly acting like a small human child. Though he didn't see how it was possible to dislike the mildly sweet scent of roses.

"On a more serious note, you could eat the cake now, if you're so impatient, but I think you'd prefer it frosted. Care to help with that task?"
PostPosted: Sun Apr 01, 2007 12:39 pm

"Hn," Hiei snorted, masking that he was amused . "Too much mercy."

He tilted his head at the mention of frosting and promptly stood up from the table. He entered the kitchen once more and felt his stomach give a grumble of anticipation. Even without the frosting, the cake looked and smelled delicious. But frosting was a must, of course. "Leave out the frosting," he began, eyeing Kurama for a moment. "and I'll kill you."

He went to the refrigerator, seeing a flash of teal in his mind's eye at the touch of cold and took the prepared frosting out. It was then he realized he had no idea exactly how frosting was to be applied. And he didn't want to look stupid. So he just held the dish and looked at Kurama as if waiting.

Kurama let the comment about his being merciful slide. What he had immediately wanted to say involved telling the Koorime, in short, that he was special and that mercy, even in jest, was now only reserved for him. But that simply wouldn't do.

An amused smile came to the fox's face at Hiei's words and accompanying actions. Kill him? Maybe later, after the necessary dessert, they could spar. That was always relaxing and entertaining to a differing extent, depending on what positions they found themselves in. His expression changed to one that clearly stated, 'That's what I thought,' but that could, in a very distorted way, more politely be translated as, 'I wouldn't dream of it.'

With the dish held in front of him, Kurama promptly got the intended message, took the bowl, and nicely said, "I'll take that as an 'I don't feel like helping,' then." The words were more to preserve what little pride he had left after the events of the past few days and Kurama's constant tormenting.

After rummaging through a few drawers, he found a dull knife that would suffice for the job. He set the dish on the counter beside the cake, and took from it what frosting the knife could pick up, continuing from there to spread it over a small portion of the cake, before repeating that little process until the cake was evenly covered. The fire demon probably wouldn't care for any decorations, so he left it fairly plain.
PostPosted: Sat Apr 07, 2007 1:34 am

Hiei was surprisingly patient, barely raising a brow at Kurama's comment. He watched the edge of the knife as if remembering something, tilting his head again. Then the Koorime scowled and pushed himself from his lean against the nearby counter. Even though he had just eaten dinner, his stomach was churning at the thick scent of chocolate. It felt like ages since he'd had something very sweet to eat. The fox was done. Hiei's patience was dead. There was a quick flash and the knife disappeared from Kurama's fair hands. A moment later, Hiei was back by the counter, holding a large piece of the cake in his hands. He broke it in half and opened his mouth to guide the fresh treat into his mouth. Pushing the rest in with one finger, the Jaganshi closed his mouth and chewed.

His whole being seemed to relax, as if this was all he needed, and the red eyes slid shut for a moment. Hiei looked quite peaceful. Until his eyes opened back up. Another flash, another huge slice of cake. He had wanted to save some for Kurama (his excuse to himself was that he hated the girlish look he'd seen on the fox's face on other occasions when food wasn't left for him), so he left half of half of the whole cake.

And once he was satisfied, there was an out of character sigh. A sigh that said, 'I am so friggin' tired; let's just go to bed.'

But he wasn't Yusuke.

Hiei shook his head to disperse congested thinking. "Eat your poison," he said to Kurama sharply, yet somehow dully.

Kurama gave Hiei and interested glance, paying attention to his positive reactions, and after a moment's thought, collectively taking them as a compliment.

Then this occurred to him: He should be offended that the Koorime had snatched most of the cake. He hadn't wanted much—it was flavorful enough that he needn't eat more than a small piece, though Hiei might tease him as if he were female and watching his weight—but the fact that he hadn't been considered until the treat was almost finished... it made the fox feel put off. Just enough to give a look intended to make the other feel guilty.

Smiling at the irony of his statement, Kurama sampled a bit of what was left, seemed to enjoy it, but pushed the rest away, as if it were somehow bad.
PostPosted: Mon Jun 11, 2007 10:22 am

Hiei had seen the look, and became slightly annoyed. From what he knew about the fox's eating habits, he had left plenty of cake. And when he saw Kurama push the remains away, he nearly choked on his drink. He pushed himself from his leaning position and began to head out of the room and into the corridors. He didn't have to say 'let's go' or even make a motion. He knew the other would pick up.

As the Koorime navigated, he silently cursed himself. If he could remember where the room was so easily it meant that they had been there long enough for him to feel at least a tiny bit comfortable. He nearly set the door on fire when he pushed it open, but instead breathed slowly and entered.

// Kurama managed to suppress his soft laughter until the Koorime left, only then enjoying the reward of his little stunt. And he proceeded to finish the cake, savoring every bite, and even getting a few crumbs on his face.

About five minutes after Hiei left, he walked through the bedroom door calmly, as if it hadn't taken far too long for the fox to get there, with consideration paid his photographic memory and navigation skills. He gave the other courtesy similar to that given to himself; he merely laid down, sprawling to an extent, saying nothing and making no gesture. So little suited his tired state. But he had left some room on the bed, with hope that Hiei would actually rest.
