OOC: What exactly is the era in which this is taking place?

"I apologize," said Marcus, taking a seat next to Terryn. "My grandmother had--has no right to force marriage on either of us. She's just...excited, is all. She simply cannot accept that I refuse to marry."

The Duchess was feeling rather drained herself. Her shrewdness and rhetoric seemed useless now. "Terryn was right, in saying that Marcus has had many before her," she told the Earl in a very beaten voice. "But before now, he simply fled; he's never stood by the girl, or never," she added, galled by the thought, "been so unabashed about it. I am at a loss."

((uhhh i thought renaissanceish to maybe a little after?))

Terryn shook her head, staying in her trance for a few moremoments before sighing and laying down and placing her head in Marcus's lap. "I just do not understand. Yes, I am technically of marrying age, but I told my father many times that I do not wish to be wed at all. I do not know why he would now think otherwise."

The earl sighed, rubbing his temples for a moment. "Perhaps...perhaps he sees something in my daughter that the other girls did not have." He looked up at the duchess and patted her hand. "My Terryn is always someone who does what is best for all involved, even if it does not seem like it. I am sure things will turn out alright."

OOC: So probably around the 16th century. And what country? I was thinking maybe France, but Marcus's surname is Winters, so...?

Marcus looked down at her and smiled. "You've never tolerated anyone so long before. He might think that your other ideas have changed. I do not blame the Earl. But my grandmother...she very nearly attacked you at the table. I apologize," he repeated, feeling both bewildered and enraged at the Duchess's behavior.

The Duchess was motionless for a few moments. "Marcus...is quite the opposite, and I fear for the well being of us all if we let them go with some interference." She was thinking hard. "We cannot force them into marriage; both are too stubborn for that."

((i thought england, so we can still speak english heehee))

Terryn sighed, nodding in agreement. "I am not quite sure why she was like that." She sat up and canted her head inquisitively. "Has she ever done that before?"

The earl nodded. "Quite so. But I will not have my daughter and your grandson in the midst of rumours. You know how the women of the court can be, and if Serina caught wind that Terryn was with child..." He shook his head. "For some reason she does not want her to have any children before we have had one of our own. Though I do not know if that will ever be."

Marcus shook his head grimly. "Not in their presence, at least," he clarified.

The duchess patted the earl's hand sympathetically. "Serina is young. Both of you seem fecund enough," she said kindly. Her mind, however, had just been struck by an idea. "They said that they wanted to spend as much time together as possible, did they not?" she said, her eyes brightening.

"So why do this to me?" Terryn frowned, drawing in her knees to her chest, trying to figure out the inner workings of the duchess's mind. "Why did she say things about your other...lady friends?"

The earl raised an eyebrow. "Yes..." He leaned in with a grin. "What are you planning, my dear?"

Marcus shrugged. "Nothing she has said to you. It's not as though I was really listening, in any case." He paused. "You mustn't make a fuss about this. Ignore her," he urged.

The duchess pursed her lips. "Well, we could do one of two things. We could allow them to see each other frequently, and only hope that they'll marry on their own. But they are both stubborn, and that may take much too much time." She tapped her fingers together. "We could also, of course, ensure that they do not see each other as often as they would like, claiming that it would not be proper for an unmarried couple to make a spectacle of themselves." She smiled widely. "I daresay that would have faster results."

Terryn shrugged. "I was never one to let the opinions of others really affect me." She leaned into the cushions and drummed her fingers on her stomach. "I take it you have never been married?"

"It would indeed." He sat back in his chair, stroking his chin as he thought for a moment. "It could also force a confession out of Terryn. I highly doubt she would want to deal with a pregnancy on her own if she could have Marcus around to share the blame."

Marcus looked revolted at the very idea. "No, and I never will be," he told her, no shadow of a doubt in his voice. "Marriage is based on love, which does not exist. So, really, marriage is just based on a lie, a misconception. Married people deceive themselves into thinking that it's exactly what they want."

"And Terryn surely must know Serina's feelings towards the matter. I imagine that she has begun to show symptoms rather early, since the two of them already know. Certainly she would not hesitate to marry if she was in danger of being found out by Serina." She studied the earl's expression. "Then this is what we must do," she said firmly, in a voice brimming with resolve.

Terryn nodded before resting her head on his shoulder. "As I said last time this subject came up, it is merely a way to spread Christian dogmatic beliefs. In my opinion, two people should be allowed to live together if they so desire, and even if have children if that is what they wish, without needing the pope to say that it is alright." She rolled her eyes at the very thought. "Marriage is nothing but a piece of over hyped paper."

The earl had always been very soft towards his only daughter, and it pained him to do this, especially in what would be her time of need. Still, it was necessary. He stood up and sighed, looking rather defeated. "Then let us go get it over with."

Marcus nodded. That too. "What ludicrous thoughts," he said sarcastically, stroking Terryn's hair softly. "You ought to be burned at the stake."

The duchess stood, but then paused. "My dear, where exactly is Serina today?"

Terryn chuckled, closing her eyes peacefully. "Yes, I know I should. I am a horrible, devil worshipping, non pious, magic casting witch from hell. And how dare I refuse marriage? The most holy and celebrated of scraments." She shook her head. "Burning is too good for me I think."

"Oh, she has taken ill." The earl frowned. "She has been like this on and off for a few months, so she is with her uncle who runs an apothecary for a week."

"And there must be an additional penalty for seducing a humble and righteous man such as myself," added Marcus innocently.

The duchess looked at her friend sympathetically. "Poor dear. Do you have any idea what is ailing her?"
PostPosted: Sun Nov 12, 2006 7:31 pm

"Oh yes...so righteous." Terryn pulled away from him and gave him an incredulous, though obviously amused, little stare. "How could such a good virgin boy like you get caught up with a harlot like me?"

He shook his head. "Not a clue. She has been complaining of breathing difficulties when she is outside for too long, so her uncle thinks it is an allergic reaction to something in the air."

"You ensnared me in one of your many plots," answered Marcus promptly, "And I, breathtaken by your beauty and desperation for a good bedding, complied."

The duchess bit her lip. "There would be no chance, then, of her finding out about Terryn until someone begins to gossip, or Terryn actually has her child."
