Richard nodded mournfully. "Yeah, he's the white tiger. He's got no chip. They can't buzz him. He's just as dangerous as Annie, except Annie doesn't appear to go after villagers from what I know." Richard stopped remembering Annie was a sensitive topic for Nita.

He sighed but it came out like a strangled Meow.

Nita was in a tree. Annie changed. Annie dug into her own neck, and ripped out her chip. Annie attacked Fiona; Fiona died.

What happened to the chip?

There was a predator. White with black stripes. Dangerous. He saw. He went into the jungle.

The chip went too.

"He took Annie's chip," Nita said slowly. Months later, she made the connection. "He'd have known they could be removed; he saw it. I saw him..." She was barely shaking, too fascinated by this revelation for the memory to provoke its usual response.

"He took Annie's chip?" Richard bit his knuckle for a moment piecing together the sequence of events together. He straightened and looked up at Nita, "So Jamal witnessed Annie rip her own chip out? And that inspired him to have Billy cut his out. So he has both chips then." Richard's tail lashed in frustration. Damn, no way of getting to see those chips without going through Jamal. That wasn't good.

Nita knit her brows, thinking. "He must have. He was there. It's not like anyone else was really looking for the chip."

Her paw went to the back of her neck at the thought of anyone, let alone Billy, who didn't even have real hands, performing that kind of surgery. "Ugh," Nita shuddered.

Richard shared Nita's sentiment, it was a miracle that Jamal was alive, let alone able to pull off his gruesome stunts. He shook his head. "Well not much I can do about that I suppose."

Richard leaned against the stairs debating saying goodbye but it was a good, if risky conversation so far. "You and... Lauren was it? Doing well?" He could keep a slight note of disapproval out of his voice even though he was just attempting to be friendly.

Damn. If there was one thing Nita didn't want to think about other than Annie, it was Lauren. Her jaw clenched and she forced herself to take a few deep breaths before answering.

"Not exactly," she said, her voice deliberately even. "She... moved out just a few days ago.

Comet's ears had perked up again when Richard said Lauren's name; at Nita's tone, the dog whined imperceptibly.

"I see." Richard made a face like he had stepped in something unpleasant. Nita's muzzled face was somewhat difficult to read but that body posture and edge to the voice was universal. He pushed away from the banister and straightened. "Sorry to hear that." There wasn't much one can say to that especially when its exactly the second time talking to a person.

Lauren had mentioned having ties to the labs which he was curious about. However, this probably wasn't the best time to ask.

"Yeah. Well. You didn't know," Nita replied shortly. She shrugged awkwardly, trying not to yell, or cry, or maybe even laugh. Whether he'd wanted the 'honor' or not, Richard was the first person Nita had talked to (as it were) about her break-up.

"So..."

Well this was awkward. "Well..." Richard searched for yet another conversation topic as Nita didn't appear to be in a huge hurry to get rid of him. "Have any suggestions for the newsletter this month? I can't say my request for submissions have been all that productive." Maybe she'd like a project to occupy her time? He smiled hopefully.

"Oh, you're the one putting together that newsletter?" Nita asked, tucking her knees up under her chin again. "One thing that could be in there is some sort of warning about the jungle. I'm sure there are people here who haven't heard about one or the other them out there, unchipped... Not to cause panic or anything, of course, but just to let people know they should be careful."

Richard shrugged, he had covered that in the previous newsletter. "Well the article on Jamal's activities should cover that I believe. In fact thats really all I've got. Not alot has happened, the Theater isn't that much farther than it was last month and I haven't been able to get any gossip from the Ivory tower." He chuckled darkly, "I could use some good news too."
PostPosted: Wed Feb 21, 2007 5:57 pm

"Ah," Nita said. "I guess it's been pretty quiet other than that..." However, mentioning the theatre sparked something.

"Actually.... I don't really know details, but there's going to be competition for the theatre. From the labs. Some kind of TV programming and stuff. It's probably not newsworthy yet, but it's in the works." Nita bit her lip, hoping that Richard wouldn't inquire as to where that little tidbit had come from. Or exactly who was working on it.

Richard's eyebrows nearly launched off his head. "A TV show? Thats great!" His excited tone laced with sarcasm. "I bet that will give me plenty of material to refute. Just what we need, lab propaganda. As if the serums don't mess with people's heads enough." There was some real bitterness in Richard's voice, he hated TV, especially TV news. He could barely find people who read the entirety of the newsletter already! With something spoon feeding the islanders. He let loose a loud sawing growl of frustration. The sound was utterly inhuman.

"I know," Nita said ruefully. She didn't mind TV, but blatant propaganda had always annoyed her. Hurray for growing up in the United States.

And of course, Nita's lackluster response to Lauren's news had partially prompted the next part of their "conversation."

Her ears flattened at Richard's howl, visibly flinching.

"Ahem." Richard attempted to clear this throat, wincing at Nita's reaction. "Sorry... Those sneak up on me sometimes..." His voice a whisper. He looked away, upset and embarrassed at his slip. It was happening more and more often, making sounds that people shouldn't and can't make. Normally he didn't even notice it but once in a while, he could feel something in his throat, give way and this happened. Worse, it hurt to speak for a moment afterwards.

He coughed as he massaged his throat. "I should go I guess."
