Inc stared at the rock in front of her, little brow wrinkled in concentration. She was completely still, and only the wind playing with her hair and making the beads braided into it chime against each other proved her to be something more than just another stone. The wind was dancing in a strange current around her, albeit subtle. If one got close enough they would notice a distinct drop in the temperature than was more than just the shade from nearby trees.

The spell seemed to break with little warning, just a quiet sigh and slight slumping of Inc's shoulders. The air around her warmed slightly as the breeze whisked away the cooler air. She laid on the ground and hid her face between her front paws, rubbing her forehead lightly against them. This was so much harder than her father and grandfather made it look! Maybe it would be easier to control if she went to them for help, but what if she was just as bad at it? She didn't want to disappoint them! She sighed again, a little more audibly. Maybe she could ask Aunt Zxrenia or Uncle Zylon for help, but she didn't know where to find them and to her knowledge neither was an ice user. The same problem applied to the rest of her aunts and uncles.
---
Grigori paced along, stretching his legs out as far as they could go. He loved the new found freedom of being out of his bowl and took long walks almost every day. The breeze that ruffled through his hair felt so lovely he never wanted to stop, but he knew he'd have to go home eventually. While his parents knew he was responsible enough to go out on his own and stay out of trouble, they still liked to have him around for the family dinners. He would have turned back in a few moments when he saw the girl. Honestly he would have missed her entirely if he hadn't glanced that way just at the right moment, he was moving so quickly, be he did notice her and stopped. What...was she doing? Grigori dropped out of his run and fell into his quiet stalk, moving forward and trying not to interrupt what seemed to be a staring contest. With a rock.

Stopping just inside the treeline, he watched the girl for a minute until her shoulders slumped and she fell on the ground. He'd seen his brothers do that during tantrums, but he doubted she was doing it for attention as there was no one around. Feeling a bit awkward, Grigori stepped out of the trees calling a greeting, “Hi! What are you doing?” he asked, his tail automatically curving into a question mark behind him.

---
Inc didn't respond to the query nor did she move from her position. Honestly, she wasn't entirely convinced that the voice hadn't come from inside her head. Her family was a little crazy, so anything was possible. Her own mother heard voices constantly, though they were actual mental voices rather than the voices of insanity. Was she starting to hear the thoughts of others? She didn't think that was possible without the extra set of ears like Mother and White Light possessed. No one on Father's side heard thoughts, not that she'd ever been told. Maybe it was the start of insanity. No one started out totally bonkers after all, their behaviors usually had to escalate a bit. Well at least the voice in her head seemed to be chipper and curious.

"'M a failure," she mumbled into the dirt. Silly really, if the voice was in her head then it would hear her thoughts just fine. Or maybe they didn't. Insane people talked to themselves all the time. Maybe it made them less insane. Didn't insane people not know they were insane? So by being insane did that make her not insane? Uuugh, all this thinking made her just want to find Big Guy and snuggle into his fur. He'd like that. Maybe she should go find him.
---
It took a long time for the girl to answer and the kitten first thought that she hadn't heard him at all. When the mumble came Grigori tilted his head in confusion; what was she a failure about? Staring down a rock? Reaching out, he gently tapped her shoulder. “Um, excuse me but...what exactly is wrong? How are you a failure? And what were you doing to that rock?”
---
Inc didn't know a whole lot about hallucinations or the general ins and outs of insanity, but she was pretty sure that you didn't go from totally to hearing voices and feeling things in the span of a couple hours. Not unless you bumped your head pretty good on something. Oh, maybe she had! She'd been staring at the rock for a long time. Perhaps the concentration had been too much for her and she just passed out and hit her head on the rock, and this whole thing was the following hallucination that came with head trauma. Did that mean she was still crazy or the voice was the result of the blow to her head?

This thought process probably would have gone on for quite some time, but thankfully Inc's wild imagination didn't mean she lacked common sense. She was just a little down from her failure and letting her disappointment have its way with her mind. Finally, finally she looked up, and spotted something very blue. And white. For a split second she was a little horrified. Had her powers actually worked, but instead of freezing the rock they went after this kid?! Then common sense kicked her thoughts again. Of course not. He was just blue. She had blue fur too, it didn't mean she was covered in ice either. What the heck was up with her mood swings today? Didn't you have to be older before they kicked in? Oh, right, the kid asked a question. She back-tracked and tried to remember what the voice in her head that wasn't really a voice in her head had said; she'd been too busy pondering the touching sensation to pay it much heed at the time. Oh yea, general concerns about her well-being and mental status and curiosity about her actions. Oh boy, how to answer these? What was this kid going to do, hand her a magical item of unknown origin that held the answer to all her problems? Well that would be freakin' awesome, but highly unlikely. More likely she would be handed a meaningless condolence. But there were manners to be considered, so she should probably hand him an answer anyway.

"My powers won't work. I thought a rock was a good place to start since it's, you know, less breakable than most other things."
---
Even though the girl stayed quiet, Grigori could tell she knew he was there. He waited with the patience borne of having little brothers who didn't always like to answer questions. Besides, the kitten could tell she was still sulking a bit; her head was still buried in her paws. She'd eventually speak, he figured, since she'd already answered one question. Sure enough, patience won out as she finally looked up at him. Grigori smiled down at her encouragingly when she finally spoke her problem.

“Oh.” He said, understanding immediately she was trying to do something to the rock, not stare it down. Maybe she had TK like him and his mom...probably more like Mom since she wasn't touching the rock when he found her. The only helpful thing he could think to do is repeat what his father always told him, “Well, you're still little, like me; it takes time to build up powers. And sometimes you need special tools to help. Like my Pop's sutra.” Grigori sized up the rock and frowned. “Were you trying to move it?”

---
And meaningless condolence it was! Could she call it, or could she call it? Maybe if the ice thing didn't work out she could go into business as a fortune teller. Then the kid asked another question that she hadn't seen coming. Well there went that career choice, darn it all. She was able to put her meager disappointment on the back burner while she turned the bulk of her attention to the question that came from nowhere. Move the rock? Move. The rock. Sutra? Was there a kama involved? Weeeird. Should she be talking to this guy? Probably not. But what better recommendation than the disapproval of common sense was there? And he had a nice smile. That was worth at least a point.

"Move it? What, like with wind? I don't think I have that." Though it wasn't impossible. She was still young, as everyone was oh so quick to tell her. Sometimes powers took a while to development. And maybe this stubborn lack of ice power meant she should be trying for wind instead. But what kind of wind made frost appear? Or was that even her? Oh holy crust on a cracker, what if someone with ice powers had been following her and making her think she had ice powers, thus denying her the practice she needed to become the most ultimate wind master the Summit family had ever seen?! Those jerks! She huffed, split tails wiggling behind her as the super fluffy parts of her body seemed to puff even further.

"I was trying to freeze it, though it appears to be a waste of my time."
---
The girl seemed irritated if her staccato questions were anything to go by. Honestly, though, he was telling the truth powers did increase with age. As for her questions, he shrugged, “I don't know much about wind, but my Mom has TK. So do I, actually, but I have to touch the item I'm moving, and Mom doesn't.” he said, trying to explain his (wrong) assumption about her powers. “But that's what I'm used to, so that's why I thought you were trying to move it.” He watched her expression go from put out to angry, fluffy tails waving around in irritation. Grigori tried his hardest to keep his face stone straight, not wanting her to see that he thought her pouting was amusing...and even cute in a weird way.

The last thing she said, however, made him tilt his head in confusion. How was practicing a waste? And how did she freeze things if she didn't have ice around her paws? Uncle Dmitri had ice around /his/ paws. But how could he put that delicately? He didn't want her getting so mad she attacked him, but he didn't want to hurt her feelings either. “Have you tried gathering ice around your own paws and then touching something?”

---
TK? What was that, some kind of disease? Was it contagious? Well if he had it and his mom had it it could be, though if his whole family wasn't sick with it by now maybe it was genetic. And even if it was contagious maybe she was immune. The genetics on her mom's side were pretty...interesting. She'd never met Big Guy's dad, but Big Guy alone was a little much for people. So were some of her cousins. Inc was so caught up in her thoughts that she almost missed the next bit. Touch things to move them sounded pretty unremarkable to her, but move things without touching was a new one. So was TK a power? Weird name, they should work on that.

Her fluff had started to slick back a tad as she got lost in thought, but it went right back to puffy at the next question from the boy and her little tails waved through the air in ways that would make a cat proud or playful."I don't know how to make the ice appear, that's the problem! My father can do it, and so can Grandfather, and they don't have ice around their paws. I can barely make frost, and that's just at random!"
---
Grigori watched her tails waving about and resisted the urge to pounce while he raised an eyebrow at her stubbornness. He knew that it probably stemmed mostly from frustration, but still, she was getting stuck in a rut by not thinking outside the box. The blue kitten looked back at the rock and scrunched his nose in thought. “At random.” he mused aloud to himself, wondering at her mental state at the time. His eyes drifted back to her waving tails, wondering if she'd be able to create her frost again if she was more relaxed.

“And were you trying /really hard/ to make the frost when it happened randomly?” He asked a bit distractedly as he hunkered down besides her. Keeping the prey distracted was his favorite method of pouncing. Worked wonders on his brothers. “Because maybe you just need to...” he reached out, checked to make sure he'd dampened his own powers so he wouldn't hurt her, and slapped down, trapping one of her tails. “Relax.”

---
Inc let out a high quality eep (which she would strictly deny point-blank, even if witnesses were called to testify against her), started to jump from the surprise (which she would deny ever being), and only made it about halfway through before the resistance from her tails caused her to pitch forward instead of up. The result was a meeting with her face and the ground. Not that the ground was a bad thing. Inc rather liked walking on it, and sometimes it had wonderfully cushioning grass that was fun to roll in or supported beautiful flowers. In this case though, she would have been happy to be a little less well-acquainted with the feel of dust in her nose.

"Of course I was trying hard," she said, the sound a bit muffled by the enthusiastic hug of the earth on her face. "How do you try to do something and not try to do it at the same time." Lucky little bugger. If she knew how to work her ice powers, she'd have given his tail a n** of her own. Nothing damaging, just a little ice. It was probably wrong of her to think that, but the thought was still entertaining. Well, as lovely as it was chatting with the earth it was time to put some distance between them. She didn't really like clingy elements. As she pushed herself back into a sitting position she let out a huff of air. She breath hung visible for a moment, like it would on a cold day, but she was so preoccupied getting the dust out of her fur that she didn't notice it.
---
Grigori grinned at the reaction, hoping he'd loosened her up if only a little bit. Even if she did crash into the dirt, Grigori couldn't stop himself from smiling with quite a bit of humor. “Are you alright? I didn't mean to introduce you to the earth, sometimes I can't tone my strength down all the way. I'm still learning the control bit.” He didn't sound wholly repentant, due to the hint of humor in his tone, but at least he tried to apologize. She didn't look like she hit that hard.

She insisted on staying down, though. Silly little thing was so dramatic. “Because some things are instinctive. You try too hard, and you cut yourself off from your power. If you relax, you can unlock your abilities. Trying to have too much control could be as bad as having no control. Just be calm and try to not force your power and it'll come...like it's doing now.” Not being distracted by dust and quite focused on his companion, Grigori caught the small burst of iced breath, and could feel a small change in temperature where he still had a paw on Inc.'s tail.

---
Inc looked confused for a moment. No, not confused. That was not a dignified expression. Ponderous? No, that sounded like something slow and fat, and she was quick and very trim thank you! Befuddled sounded worse than confused; what on earth was a fuddle anyway? It didn't sound like anything cute. Puzzled, now that was a much better word! Puzzles were smart things that required thinking and intelligence. Yes, Inc looked puzzled for a moment. What did he mean she had used her powers? She didn't see anything that looked like ice, didn't feel any different.

She wasn't too sold on the idea of instinct. Wouldn't that mean it would show up a lot more often than it did now? And if it was all instinct and little control, why hadn't her powers decorated that non-contrite face with frost and mini icicles? Well, she probably knew the answer to that. Though violence didn't bother her in the least and she would have no trouble using her teeth to give the little kitten a "thank you for the pounce" retaliation pounce in place of ice, instinctively she didn't want to hurt anyone with her powers. She knew how strong the elemental magic was from watching her family. Could she be blocking herself? Could her instinct not to hurt people be blocking her instinct to use her magic? How annoying.

"Okay," she said, sitting up properly, tail tips twitching but this time with her tail curled up around her and out of immediate pounce range. Her eyes narrowed slightly as she examined the kitten with a lot more concentration than she had given him before. She was careful not to look so hard that it made her forehead wrinkle though. Intense narrowed stare was kind of regal, intense wrinkled forehead made her look befuddled. Oh, what that was those forehead wrinkles were called, fuddles? Oops, getting off track again! Back to intense, regal stare. "How would one learn to use their instincts to summon their power?"
---
Grigori watched the expressions chase themselves across Inc's face and flicked his tail. He knew that what he was trying to explain was on the unexplainable side. Using one's magic normally came in two ways: Trying hard or just letting it flow through you. Oddly enough, trying hard was the easier of the two in a lot of ways. At least you felt like you were doing something productive. Whether it was researching or actually seeing your progress.

Sure enough, Inc. asked the one question that was the crux of the problem. “Well you see,” Grigori sent her a half grimace, half smirk, “you don't really 'learn'. You have to kind of...let go and just use your powers.” And if that didn't sound new-agey and lame he didn't know what did. Still, if he were going to help, he'd have to convince her. Looking around he spotted a larger boulder than the one she had been working on, one large enough to where he'd obviously not be able to lift it.

“See, the thing is, blocks can come from all sorts of places and for all sorts of reasons.” Grigroi said, trying to remember what Ivan had told him and his brothers before they found their powers. “Um...well, the long and short of it is, my dad took /years/ researching his powers before he found the right combination of spells and stuff that helps him. Where as all I had to do was get mad for getting scolded. And then I could do this.” Grigori scampered to the huge boulder and yanked it into the air. He let the rock roll slowly down his shoulders and back until he was holding the massive object with the tip of his tail. “The anger blasted my link to my powers open all at once so it's super easy for me to use them.”

“You focus a lot and nothing happens, right?” Grigori asked, putting the rock back on the ground and bounding back to Inc. Why don't you try a different approach?” He tilted his head and curled his tail into a question mark.

---
Inc opened her mouth, retort about how unhelpful the advice was on the tip of her tongue, then suddenly closed her mouth and furrowed her brow in concentration as thoughts poured into her head. She was silent and seriously focusing, so much that she didn't even have her usual distractions poking in. "You said I used my powers just a bit ago," she said slowly. "When was that? I didn't see."
---
Ah, so she hadn't noticed it. He wondered how many times she'd gotten her powers to work and hadn't even realized she'd done anything. "It was just after I pounced you. You got up and huffed at me. Your breath crystallized and I could feel how much colder the air surrounding your body had become."
---
Inc rolled that information around like a marble in her head. When the boy had suddenly grabbed at her tails it was like everything had been a complete blank. Probably her mind shelving her previous emotional state and pulling out the new one. Her mind could move pretty fast, but there was still an brief bit of time between the switch when there was no mood or anything at all. She wasn't sure whether or not emotion was the key for her. She felt all kinds of emotions all the time. Was the key to powers not thinking or feeling? Or was it that there was some hidden emotion she had yet to discover, or feel in large enough quantities to trigger things? It couldn't have been because she was startled, though admittedly she was rarely ever startled. If she couldn't get startled the first time her grandpa bore down on her, she didn't think there was much else that could do the trick. Heck, she should probably hand this kid an award for managing such a difficult feat. Now she knew better so it wouldn't be so easy a second time!

So not thinking or feeling? How did she even start to do that? She was never not thinking! It was easy enough to suppress or direct emotions if she put a bit of effort into it, but was that enough? And all that aside, if she didn't think or feel then how could she use her power? Didn't intent require thought? This wasn't all instinct-run, was it? Inc gave a very miffed sniff and swatted at a dirt clod, the little bell on her bracelet jingling with the movement. "That is highly annoying," she announced in her most final tones, as though she were some godling casting a decision of fate. In a sense she was; she decided the fate of the secret to her powers was quite annoying indeed. "Well, I suppose I should give thanks for the advice, no matter how annoying its application. So...thanks. My name is Princess Feel Good Inc Matthews-Summit," she added, realizing neither had actually introduced themselves.
