Izo wasn’t a big fan of that fact that Lazarus seemed to be giggling at him for one reason or another, although it was pretty obvious why: He was on to Izo’s plan that Raiden was never a big deal. “Alright, you caught me on that one. I’ll admit I’m not the most ‘oblivious of people,’ but by the looks of things, I’ll say you aren’t either.” Izo turned to Raiden who was still talking to Hansuke about one thing or another. “It’s hard to believe that he’s the stubborn one when you seem like the more intelligent from what I’ve seen.” Izo laughed at his own joke before continuing, “Or maybe it’s the fact that you’re more intelligent that makes you the more agreeable one hmm?” As Lazarus mentioned that Raiden wouldn’t harm Hansuke, Izo quickly dismissed that topic with the wave of a hand, “It’s not something I’m worried about. I don’t mean to sound so cut-throat, but I didn’t plan to allow him to harm Hansuke anyways, not without a legitimate reason.” Izo looked down at the table and thought about what he was going to say next. He didn’t want to sound any more brash than he was already sounding. “The top two of the Johto Region eh? You could teach me a thing or two whenever you get the time about battling.” Izo had never actually participated in a Pokémon League, so the whole thing sounded marvelous.
Hansuke sighed silently to himself, he really didn’t know that Raiden could talk so much and to be honest, it was a bit abrasive of him. “I-I hope I do fine as well.” Hansuke didn’t know what would be the right thing to say most of the time since Raiden seemed to be trying to force motivation onto Hansuke, which for the most part he didn’t mind. It was just hard to try and sound confident for the sake of getting this guy to leave him alone. ‘Gosh, he sounds aggressive even when he’s trying to give me advice.’ Hansuke was relatively relieved though when he saw Raiden leaning back against the counter. At least he was now giving Hansuke space, which he had needed desperately it seemed like, or at least felt like. “Mhmm, b-be myself, I got it.”

It was surprising to hear those words from Izo. Apparently, Lazarus and Izo were more alike than Lazarus had initially thought. “Oh well yeah, I learned a thing or two about the streets and I know a lot when it comes to the term ‘street smarts.’ I guess I have a lot of those.” Lazarus smiled, trying to reassure Izo in his own way not to double-cross him, although the connection between what he said and what he wanted to convey was a bit far off.
As Izo turned towards Raiden, Lazarus did the same, trying to see what it was that Izo saw in those two talking over there. “You don’t have to be smart to be stubborn. I wouldn’t say I’m more intelligent either. I just try to mind what I say so I don’t step on any toes or burn any bridges,” Lazarus pointed at Raiden, “He does enough of that for the both of us.” ‘Sometimes I think travelling alone would be the best, but I remember that journey I took alone… That was the most boring thing I’d ever done.’ “I think the best kind of adventure is the one where you’re always on your toes though, so I like to keep him around.” Lazarus laughed before attempting to figure out what it was that Izo was talking about. “Oh! I don’t think I could teach you anything that wouldn’t already know. It’s just about dedication.” Lazarus nodded, mentally promising that there wasn’t anything he was holding out on.
Raiden was eager to hear more from Hansuke, but it seemed like Hansuke was giving answers that didn’t call for a response… Maybe he was just nervous about something? Either way, Raiden didn’t want to keep him there if he was uncomfortable. “Alright, let’s go back to the others. We should get ready for the Pokémon battle, trust me, you’ll do fine, whatever happens- happens.” Raiden pushed himself off the table and walked on over to Izo and Lazarus. “…Let’s battle?” Lazarus nodded and turned to Izo, “So, are you two ready to battle?”

Izo nodded at Lazarus when he mentioned the street smarts. “Good stuff- that street smarts anyways. I don’t know what I have, although if I had to guess, it would be nothing but street smarts.” Izo nodded to himself, recalling the fact that he was in Team Rocket at one point and if there’s anything you learn from being in an evil organization, it’s that you develop some sort of street smarts. ‘Yeah, I definitely have street smarts, maybe even more than Lazarus, but he could be lying about his past like I am.’ Izo didn’t want to think about deception right now. “You make sense Lazarus. I know what you mean, I always keep bridges open, but sometimes it’s best to cut ties when you no longer see eye-to-eye with the people you used to work with.” Izo shook his head, realizing he already said too much. The last thing he wanted was a nosey Lazarus asking all kinds of questions about what he meant. “I don’t know about that, after all, you are from the Hoenn Region, you could’ve learned things there that I’ve never even heard of, but if you want to hold out on your tips, I understand, I’m sure I’ll learn a thing or two battling Raiden anyways.” Izo grinned smugly before ultimately deciding to drop the whole façade about what was more mysterious than who, if there even was one. Izo liked to create these silly games whenever he got bored.
Hansuke wasn’t so nervous now talking to Raiden, but on the same note, he was rather bored. It almost sounded like Raiden was picking every word he said carefully, although that would be a strange thing for him to be doing, especially since he seemed so dominating just a few short minutes ago. “Yeah, going to the others sounds like the smart thing to do.” Hansuki eagerly followed as Raiden led the way back to Lazarus and Izo, the two people who seemed relatively sane compared to Raiden.
As Lazarus asked if Hansuki was ready to battle, Hansuki could feel his stomach tightening. “Y-Yeah, I-I-I suppose s-so.” Hansuki grabbed his stomach nervously, not wanting to battle or anything like that in all honesty. Izo picked up on this anxiety but decided to force the battle on Hansuki anyways, “Come on, Lazarus you lead the way.” Izo grinned towards Hansuki, “You have to start somewhere.”

“I’m pretty sure you have them, but let’s get down to business.” Lazarus waited for Izo to finish speaking and waiting for Hasuke and Raiden to show up with the Pokémon. Hastily, Lazarus took his two Pokémon from Raiden and smiled as a way of saying thank you. He then turned to Hansuke and said aloud, “You’re going to be battling me this round.” Lazarus then turned to Raiden, “You’ll be battling Izo, that should be an interesting matchup.” Lazarus could tell that he was probably the most excited about this battle. After all, it wasn’t every day he got to battle people from a different region and that meant that they would have a different method of fighting as well. ‘I wish I could battle against Hansuke, but it’s probably for the best he doesn’t see how in the zone I get when I’m battling.’ Raiden rolled his eyes at the dilemma he was being presented with. He really didn’t like having to battle against Izo because he knew that he probably wouldn’t enjoy it as much as he would battling Hansuke, but then again, he’d probably end up letting Hansuke win if they fought, so maybe it was for the best that Raiden fought against Izo.

Lazarus stood up and waved for the other three to follow him. “Come on, there’s a training grounds in the back of the Pokémon Center, we can battle there.” Raiden followed as Lazarus walked down the empty hallways. Most of the time, the Pokémon Center was empty if it was day time since everyone was travelling, plus the weaker wild Pokémon lived out here, so very rarely did someone’s Pokémon actually faint unless it was from a reckless training accident.
Once in the courtyard, Lazarus found a battle-ground. “Okay, Hansuke, you stand on the other side of this battle-ground.” Raiden looked around and found another battle-ground right next to the one Lazarus was standing on. Without say a word, he walked over to it and stood on the opposite end, waiting for Izo to join him so that they could battle.

Izo smiled as the two trainers approached them. It didn’t seem like they were in some sort of argument while standing at the table because by the looks of things, Hansuke didn’t look too shaken up or scared which was always a good sign. “Alright Hansuke?” Hansuke nodded approvingly before allowing Lazarus to lead the three of them to the back of the Pokémon Center. He’d never been back there before so it was definitely something new to him, but then again, everything he’d been doing so far had been new to him. He hadn’t even really battled with Pokémon before, but testing the prototype Porygon doesn’t exactly count as a battle in itself since it was just some trial and error kind of test runs he had to do while he was in Team Rocket. Yes, Hansuke remembered those days quite well. Maybe he could try and renact the testing he did, at least until he was able to comfortably battle on his own. ‘Oh Arceus… Please help me now.’ Hansuke and Izo stepped into the back and almost on cue, Izo followed Raiden over to a battling area, leaving Lazarus with Hansuke. “E-Erm, I guess I jus-just stand over there.” Hansuke ran to the opposite side of the battling area and looked at Lazarus with concerned eyes. He didn’t really want to battle, but it was the only way to make his Pokémon stronger. “S-So I guess I just use my Pokémon.” Hansuke tossed a Pokeball into the air, causing his Pineco to come out. “P-Pineco are you ready?” Pineco turned to Hansuke and hopped excitedly, “Pi-Pine!” Hansuke nodded and turned to Lazarus, “F-First move goes to you.”

Izo walked to the side where Raiden was and grinned smugly, “You’re a pretty quiet kind of guy, it’s going to be interesting listening to you give commands to your Pokémon.” Izo pulled a pokeball from his person and then held it in front of him, causing his Zorua to emerge. “Alright then, are you ready to get started?” Izo smiled mischievously as he watched Zorua growl, trying to intimidate Raiden or something.

Lazarus scratched the back of his head as he looked at Hansuke. He seemed so nervous about battling; clearly he wasn’t too used to battling. “Uh, don’t worry about it, I’ll go easy on you okay?” Lazarus followed Hansuke with his eyes as Hansuke walked over to the opposite side of the battlegrounds. “Alright then, just use your Pokémon and I’ll use mine.” As Hansuke tossed his pokeball out and released a Pineco, Lazarus smiled widely, “That’s an interesting Pokémon you got there. I don’t think I’ve ever met anyone who’s starter Pokémon was actually a Pineco. This should be a fun fight.” Lazarus unhooked a pokeball from his belt and tossed it into the air, causing his Pokémon Timburr to come forth. “Timburr is a fighting type, so this should be a pretty interesting matchup.” Timburr waved its piece of lumber around in the air as a means of intimidating Pineco, although its tiny stature couldn’t possibly do anything to strike terror in its heart. “Well, if you insist that we have the first move…” Lazarus knew that he would have to go easy on Hansuke since it was his first time fighting. It wouldn’t be fair to beat the crap out of him for no reason. “Use pound!” Timburr jumped right next to Pineco and lifted the piece of wood it was holding before swinging it downwards in the hopes of smacking the Pineco with it. “Good luck countering the technique.” Pound was a basic technique, so hopefully Pineco would be able to do something to fight off the attack, or at least that is what Lazarus was hoping for.

Meanwhile, Raiden was preparing for battle with the Zorua that was barking non-stop. “You want to hear me… speak?” Raiden looked at Izo, slightly confused by his comment, but none-the-less decided to go ahead and give him a battle he’d been wanting. Raiden sent out his Cyndaquil who immediately shot flames out of its back the moment it heard the barking Zorua. “Cyndaquil, use flamethrower.” Cyndaquil inhaled and then exhaled a powerful flame forth from its mouth, hoping to scorch and incinerate the barking Zorua.

“T-Thanks, it has some good defense I believe.” Hansuke blushed as Lazarus complimented his Pokémon. It wasn’t something he was expecting but it was nice to receive the compliment. Pineco liked the compliment too because even Pineco knew that he had potential since he was such a tough Pokémon. “Alright then, let-let’s get started.” ‘So that we can get it over with.’ Hansuke sighed and looked at Pineco and then the Pokémon that Lazarus used, which was Timburr. It was a fighting type if Hansuke remembered correctly, so he might just have the advantage this battle. “Okay… I can do this!” As Timburr came towards Pineco with a pound attack, Hansuke decided to try and block it the best way a Pineco would know how, “Use Protect please.” Pineco generated a shield that warded off the lumber that was about to smack Pineco. Now that the attack was deflected properly, Hansuke needed to think of a countering technique. “Use tackle.” Pineco leapt forward, hoping to strike Timburr with a tackle attack.

Izo was eager to be battling Raiden, who seemed to be like he would be a challenge compared to Hansuke, who didn’t have any battle experience. Although, the exchange of words before the battle was short lived, seeing as how Raiden was already shouting commands to Cyndaquil to use flamethrower. “Alright then, if you want to play this quick, I guess I don’t have time to spare either.” Izo pointed to the incoming flame, “Use your move Detect, and then follow up with agility.” Zorua’s eyes glowed a light blue before it leapt out of the way from the incoming flame. Then, it began to run around in circles, picking up speed as it did so. “So it seems like it’s your turn. I won’t send out an attack this round. I like to see how far I can go before I actually have to resort to attacking.” Izo had a plan, by building up Zorua’s speed; Cyndaquil would have a hard time landing a hit, meaning that Zorua could easily dominate this round since having a speedy Pokémon was just as good as having a power-hitting Pokémon.

Maddie awoke the next day, she looked over at Kadaj. He was on the ground, snoring and drooling. Around him were his pokemon. Madeline couldn't help but giggle. She decided to let him sleep. Gricheux was already awake and eating some berries from a nearby shrub. Maddie began to get some breakfast ready. She heated up a pan and began cooking some eggs.

She heard Gricheux barking at the shrub. "Gri gri what's wrong?" She asked. "NUb!" The bush shook then a pokemon burst out and slapped Snubbull. "oo oo ooo ai ai pom!!" it called. "Aipom...How adorable!" "I must catch it!" The pokemon used scratch on Snubbull, "Use Fire Fang!" Snubbull bit down on it tail with a fiery bite, causing a burn. Aipom used Swift next and shot stars at Snubbull, knocking it back. "Nubbbull!!" It growled. Then used Bite. The Aipom flinched and fell back. Maddie threw a pokeball at the monkey, sucking it inside....

So it seemed like Lazarus knew a thing or two about battling from the way he handled that countering technique. Timburr was struck by a tackle attack, causing it to roll backwards before ultimately standing back up and attempting to appear smug, although deep down that tackle got it pretty good. “Wow, I’m impressed! I didn’t think Pineco had that kind of power, that’s wonderful!” Lazarus clapped aloud for the Pineco before getting back to it. “Alright, so we might need to get a little more aggressive to keep you on your toes, no problem!” Timburr twirled the piece of lumber around above its head before crashing it back into the ground. ‘I see Toby is trying to intimidate the Pineco, that’s good.’ Sometimes intimidation could go a long way, although not all Pokémon could pull off intimidating others. “Use Rock Throw!” Timburr picked up a piece of earth that quickly crumbled down into a relatively small rock. Once it was nice and compact, Timburr chunked it at the Pineco, hoping to smash it with the rock.
There was definitely something up with Zorua not attacking. However, no matter how fast a Pokémon was, it wouldn’t be able to land a hit if it couldn’t see Cyndaquil. “Clyde, use Smoke Screen.” Cyndaquil began to exhale a thick black smoke into the air, hiding Cyndaquil’s location in the process. Once the smoke cloud was nice and big, Cyndaquil stopped and waited for Raiden to say something else. “Alright now use ember.” Through the smoke cloud, several small fire balls shot forth and aimed for the Zorua. If this attack landed, then Zorua would be struck and may just injure the Pokémon. ‘The goal is to take out the Zorua’s legs. If I can do that, then building up speed would’ve been a wasted effort. All Pokémon have a weakness.” Raiden exhaled a steady breath, still skeptical about how proficient this technique would be.

Hansuke didn’t like the looks of how things were going. He knew a thing or two about how Pokémon behaved though, so he could only assume that the move protect more than likely wouldn’t work twice in a row, so it was time to use another technique that could strengthen Pineco’s defenses to endure the next blow since Pineco was much too slow to simply dodge. “Alright Po-pop! Let’s use Iron Defense!” Pienco closed its shell for a moment, coating itself in an iron-like substance before reopening. As it opened up, the rock that Timburr had thrown collided with Pineco, causing the Pineco to tumble a little before regaining its composure and looking to Hansuke for a way to counter the technique just used. ‘G-Good, okay now I think I’m getting the hang of this.’ Hansuke pointed to Timburr, “Po-Pop, give him a swift attack!” Pineco began to spin rapidly on the ground, launching stars from within its confines as it did so. The stars raced towards Timburr. ‘Alright, Swift never misses, so that eliminates him dodging the attack. I wonder how he’ll be able to avoid this one.’ Hansuke looked on with eager eyes, hoping to see some sort of contact made to know that the rock throw technique wasn’t a freebie.

Izo frowned as he watched a fog of dark smoke roll in. It was the smokescreen no doubt, that would definitely put a hamper on the plans he wanted to do with Zorua. ‘Hmm, he’s a worthy adversary indeed. I might have to exert a little bit more energy and come in with an offensive attack. First thing’s first though, I need to infiltrate the defenses.’ As Izo thought this, several small fireballs shot out from the blanket of fog, astonishing even Izo who thought he’d seen it all. ‘Damn, he knows what he’s doing!” Zorua tried to dodge several of the fireballs but it was no use, one of the many managed to strike Zorua in its side, causing it to roll over. “Nice one! You sure do know what you’re doing with Cyndaquil.” ‘But does he know what I’m doing with Zoro?’ Izo pointed into the smoke cloud. “Now Zoro, faint attack.” Zoroa sighed and walked into the cloud of smoke as casually as possible. While inside, it found Cyndaquil so it approached him. When he was right in front of him, Zoroa swung its claw at Cyndaquil’s snout, hoping to get off a cheap shot.

Kadaj stood up and walked around after withdrawing all of his Pokemon.
It didn't take him long to find Madeline battling a wild Aipom. That'd make an interesting addition to her team. "Good job!" Kadaj clapped for Madeline as he saw the Pokeball stop moving, signaling that the capture was complete.

Timburr got hit by the stars and staggered backwards, although Lazarus kind of enjoyed the battle he was having because it wasn’t as easy as he had anticipated it to be. He almost thought that this was going to be a cakewalk and that he wouldn’t have to do anything too complicated. However, Pineco was proving to be a big handful in terms of how complicated it was to beat. “You’re doing an awesome job at the defensive capabilities of Pineco.” Even Timburr nodded, agreeing with what Lazarus had already said. ‘There’s only one move I have that can bypass those increases in defense…’ Lazarus folded his arms and leaned forward, “Use Chip-Away Toby!” Toby leapt directly in front of Pineco and swung its large piece of lumber beside it before ultimately thrusting it at Pineco in the hopes of striking a weak spot. “Chip Away allows Timburr to strike an enemy in their weak spot such as the Pineco. Since it used Iron Defense, this move will be able to bypass that. I’m just telling you so that you know when you’re up against other opponents, although I’m a bit interested in seeing how you manage to deflect it now.” Lazarus was really liking how he had to fight a Pineco, whose defenses were off the chart for a starter Pokémon. It was really beginning to make this battle interesting.
Cyndaquil lets its guard down as Zorua approached, which was a big mistake because it got punched in the snout by Zorua, causing it to sneeze and jump backwards, “…Hmph.” Cyndaquil wasn’t too happy with that either. Apparently Zorua thought it was so smart, but they wouldn’t fall for that again. ‘I need to get Zorua while it’s still close range like this.’ Raiden quickly went over Cyndaquil’s move list in his head before picking something out and rolling with it. “Clyde- I want you to use Flame Charge…” Cyndaquil cloaked itself in a flame before charging right at Zorua who was no more than four feet ahead of it. Raiden was hoping this would work, even if it didn’t exactly knock out Zorua, because by doing this, it would give an increase to Cyndaquil’s speed.

The very idea of Timburr even being able to penetrate Pineco’s defenses was enough to make Hansuke sweat bullets. Normally he would just call the fight right there, but he needed to prove to himself that he wasn’t helpless, and that he could defeat Timburr simply because Pineco and he were close, or at least that was some of the logic. Hansuke had to admit though, believing in his Pokémon was a bit of a stretch. He knew he needed to believe in himself as well if he wanted to win anything. “I didn’t use it last time, so I’ll use it this time, Protect!” Pineco shielded itself, deflecting the large hunk of wood and opening an area for countering. “Alright, perfect!” ‘Alright, I deflected, now I should probably counter, but I need to think of a move stronger than a tackle.’ “Use Sand Tomb!” Pineco began to spin rapidly, kicking up sand in the area while the process occurred. The sand enveloped itself around Timburr, hoping to lift the Pokémon into the air and demolish it with a barrage of sand. ‘If this move works, Timburr will be trapped in a sand storm for a little bit, meaning that it won’t be able to attack me with close-range moves, eliminating most of them.’ Hansuke sighed, feeling almost as if he might have just won this round.

Meanwhile, Izo wasn’t sure what was going on because the biggest mistake he’d made was sending his Zorua into the smoke cloud with a faint attack. He didn’t see until it was too late and his Pokémon Zorua was sent flying out of the smoke cloud be the flame charge. Zorua slid across the ground for several feet before jumping up, only flinching a little to show that it had really just taken a beating in there. “You’re good Raiden. I guess I underestimated you, that was my mistake.” Zorua barked once more, showing that it still had some fight left in it. “Use Night Daze into the smoke screen Zoro!” Zorua looked at the smoke screen and released a black shock-wave that raced inside of the smoke, hoping to lure out the Cyndaquil with a powerful blast.

So it seemed like things weren’t going exactly as planned, Lazarus could dig it. After all, he liked battles he lost more so than he liked battles he won, because at least from losing, you learned some sort of lesson when it comes to training and all that other good stuff, but he wasn’t about to give up just yet. As the sandstorm began to whirl up and try to grab Timburr in its clutches, Lazarus had to think of a plan as a trainer to keep his Pokémon safe. “Use-” It was too late. Timburr was swept up in the sand storm, getting minor cuts on it every few seconds. “It’s not over yet, Toby use Stone Edge!” Timbur adjusted itself in the air so that it was facing Pineco, then it stuck its tiny palm out with one hand while holding the lumber in the other. Instantly, stones began to rise from the ground beneath Pineco, attempting to throw themselves upwards in the hopes of stabbing and knocking out Pineco so that Timburr could be freed from this sandy prison it was now ensared in, although to be honest, the likelihood of getting a knockout was pretty low since Pineco’s defenses had been increased by the Iron Defense. It seemed like the only hopes Timburr has of winning now would be connecting with a Chip Away once more, but that would be only after it got out of the air.
The battle taking place between Zorua and Cyndaquil was an interesting one. Raiden watched as the flame charge connected with Zorua, forcing it out of the cloud of smoke, but in the same breath, he watched as a dark wave came inside of the smoke and struck Cyndaquil, causing the smoke to vanish. “Hmph, I see wide-range moves are all that you are capable of right now since you cannot see where Cyndaquil is.” It didn’t bother Raiden, it was more of an observation as to how his opponent handles certain situations. “Run up to Zorua!” Cyndaquil ran towards Zorua with no sign of attack other than the flames that were naturally lit on its back. Once Cyndaquil was close enough, it waited for commands by Raiden. “Now use lava plume!” Cyndaquil began to spin around on its back legs, spitting a fire into the air all around it, encasing itself in a defense made of flames, but the flames spread far enough that they would hit Zorua if it didn’t dodge the technique.
