She hadn't had to look for him long. In fact, it seemed more like he had found her rather than the other way around, but she didn't even question that as she wrapped her arms around him in turn, burying her face into his shoulder. She took a deep breath once there - sweat, fire, grass, blood, and the more familiar lingering scents that she recalled of him whenever she laid with her head nested right there against his neck with their arms wrapped around each other.

This was the real Marcus, not the lingering apparition of a man she had been so longing to hold onto just a moment before.

"It isn't home without you." she answered, "I couldn't go home without you." Cass agreed. More chaos, so much lingering chaos. She was ready for a break, ready to sleep. Nicodemus was quiet in her head as the frantic voices seemed to calm down, lulling themselves to a silence that allowed the Tonberry to speak. However, he would wait for a better moment. She was frantic.

She needed to calm herself and if this was working, well...he wouldn't fight it. His protests had been long ignored anyways.

Cass leaned up, pressing her lips to his for just a moment before she pulled away from him. "Let's go home, Marcus." she agreed, "It's time to go home."

Olivia

Memories wrapped around her, shifted, happily one to another. Those fond memories of home itself, playing before her eyes, showing her the warmth and the love of the family she came to love.

Olivia! They all cried out together, their voices joined as one. Distorted and warped, but the ghoul didn't notice. These were such happy times, their faces seemed to glow from their love as the fog shifted and changed. Her first true smile was the one that played the most, seeming to keep her there in the fog even as it began to slowly lift and take off in the form of the bird. But it held on tightly to her.

Olivia. There were flashes of new memories, those with Amarus and Faustus that pulsed from time to time, weaving with those happy ones spent with her family. Smiles and laughter and hugs, but only glimpses. But enough to want her to stay, held in the embrace of these fond images.

"Olivia."

For a moment, Olivia felt her mind stir as if waking up from a dream. She wasn't sure where the voice had come from, from whom or where. Was it part of her memories or was it real? But she could feel the veil of the fog begin to lift all around her. "No," she whispered, her hands shooting upward as it fluttered away so easily, slipping from her fingertips like mist.

"No," she cried out again, not wanting them to go away. Those memories. They couldn't leave her, she didn't want them to. She had found the same sense of security and warmth with those she had met here as she did in that cabin in the woods.

What if they left her as easily as this? She didn't want them to, they couldn't. Olivia let out a little whimper as her hands fell to rest against the sides of her head, cupping her ears in a vain attempt to block those whispers in her mind. Her blue eyes filled with sadness as the bird completed its reformation into what had been looming over them for so long already.

She could feel herself trembling, alone where she stood. Alone. And watching the bird fly into towards the portals. Those portals that lead to home for so many, one where she wanted to some day.

Though, she didn't know if that would ever be possible. "No..." she whispered again with a shudder.

Sleep. Oh, what a wonderful sleep it was. The rhythmic dip with each step lulled him into peaceable silence, the comfort of love only a mother, even adopted, could give. Yet even in the embrace only a cold-hearted person could deny, Mort felt . . . wrong; his eyes began to open slowly. The memory was correct, but the fact that it was going on here, now . . . it was wrong. His first mother was no longer around, he remembered sadly - these warm, large arms were not the ones he ran to anymore.

But would it be so wrong to just stay in this memory? To sit and not have to think, to be taken care of and know nothing about suffering or pain or Hunters? His eyes began to close again, feeling the weight of exhaustion just beyond him and reluctant to face it. Why couldn't he just stay here? Hadn't he earned it after all he had survived through?

"Stop it."

It wasn't the whispers who spoke, though they certainly kept at it like a horde of insects, all murmurs and unknown words. But he knew this voice and the sweet little ghoul who owned it. He wanted to bring her into Mama's fold, tell her no lumbering Hunter would hurt her so long as she stayed -

The memory faded. It was sudden, like a wall of complete reality that hurt to smack against - and the zomboil was frightened like a scareling to come back to it so quickly, when he wasn't ready. The warmth was leaving him and replaced with aches and chills, the dips and bows of Mama's pace evening out into a flat ground. Mort groaned and fluttered his blind eyes open to mist, confusion, and loudness once more.

And sand-colored feet. Mama. She hadn't left him after all!

But the zomboil was barraged unexpectedly by insecure thoughts: why was Mama here? Wasn't she gone? Had the Hunters took her too? Did she even like him? Had she left because she couldn't handle a child with so many problems? Mama had gone one night and never came back after a fight when eh was but a scareling . . . He couldn't bear to have her leave again. He had to prove he was better now, that he was a son she could love.

Grunting, Mort forced himself up, wondering briefly where his glasses had gone. More fears: she would see the milky green eyes and declare him a cripple for sure. He whined softly and turned his gaze down to her feet again.

"We have to stop it," she commanded through the sea of whispers he heard.

"Y-Yes, Mama." Anything for you.

There was no way that Xiu was letting that bird anywhere close to the portal to Amityville. While it truly pained her to see the faces and figures that made up the phoenix, she refused to sit back and watch as her school--and her home--was destroyed.

She moved towards one of the portals, waiting until the phoenix swooped low enough for her to lunge out and swing her leg up and around in a kick. She was certain that she looked ridiculous--after all, she was a rather small ghoul who was beating a creature that was a fair bit larger--but it really didn't matter right now. Even if her hits were weak, she took satisfaction in the fact that they helped even the tiniest bit in driving the bird back. She would fight as best as she could until their portal was safe.

She could hear someone. Someone was calling to her, but she ignored it. She didn't want to listen, to busy within the confines of her own memory. She wanted to stay here, didn't want to leave...

The voice persisted, calling again and again. Eventually she listened to it, and her memories began to fade away into reality. She was left feeling vulnerable, weak. Voices whispered inside her head, and try as she might she could not make out a thing they said to her. She wanted to know, what were they saying?

Were they insulting her? Or even worse, saying she wasn't strong enough. They could be saying how weak she was, how easy it would be to push her around. That she didn't belong, and should just go back home..

home...

"Jack...in hell..." She hated this, she hated this feeling. She didn't want to be weak!

Reiko was paralyzed with indecision. She slowly stumbled up, because she had to at least try, try to protect Amityville, she couldn't let that thing get back there, because that was home. The fog was not home, Amityville was home, and she needed to protect it. She went for the Phoenix and attempted to push, but she stumbled, fell short.

She was useless. Why had she even bothered to try...?

The phoenix's huge wings were dipping lower and lower, slipping too fast and agonizingly slow towards the portals. No, Siddie thought. They couldn't let it through. How could she do anything from here? Useless. She was useless. She was always useless. She thought she heard soft, mocking laughter begin beside her.

No. No! It was the fog, the fog she had been lost in. She wasn't useless anymore. She wasn't, she wouldn't be! Siddie cast around frantically for something, anything she could throw. There, a rock that had been turned up in the impact when the island fell. Siddie scrabbled it out of the dirt and flung it at the phoenix. It hit - but had it had any effect? She couldn't tell.

She could hope, or try to hope. The voices whispered just out of her hearing range, and began to laugh at her. Siddie folded herself down into a ball and clenched her hands over her ears, as though such a simple, physical action could block the madness out.

It took several moments of Lucien staring at the Insanity Phoenix for him to realize just what was going on. Those portals that Lucien had pondered about going through previously? Well, now the Phoenix was doing just the same thing. What would happen if the Phoenix got through the portal and escaped to Halloween? No, Lucien didn't want to think about it. He had to do something to keep it away from.

Lucien wasn't big on bright ideas but he wasn't about stand by and let his home become threatened. It wasn't just his home, it was their home. It was home to so many. If they had a home to go back to, then they had to stop the phoenix from getting through the portal to Halloween. Whoever Lucien heard yell that they had to stop it from getting to Halloween was right and he was more than willing to try and stop the bird. He rushed the phoenix with all his might, and being full of both air and spirit, he successfully managed to push the phoenix away from the portal to Halloween. It left one question to be answered: for how long?

It wouldn't be long at this rate, because the hunters were trying to get it away from the other portal? There was definitely a pause, a strange sensation running down Lucien's back. They were trying to protect their home too, although it wasn't strange, it made Lucien feel weird. He didn't want to force the Phoenix on to them either, what would happen if that got loose there? Surely it would be just as bad as if it got loose in Halloween.

"Can't you just stay here? This is your home! I know it doesn't look like much but it is here, you just have to look closely enough!" He called to the Phoenix.

The phoenix drifted closer to the portals, and Jordan felt a surge of anger at it. Die and stay dead. He made his way closer to the blue portal - home, for real this time - and when a shifting, foggy feather came closer to the ground, he moved to swing Ferros at it.

Hah, do you really think that'll do any good? You never do any good. You just weigh others down.

Jordan stopped, wincing. God, he'd - he'd thought he'd gotten over that little voice. Made it go away, or at least suppressed it. No. No, there were others who needed him. He needed to fight the ashen phoenix. As the thing's wing came down again, he brought Ferros around to hit it.

The hammer passed through the fog with very little to prove it had hit at all, but Jordan thought maybe the creature had pulled its wing up and in slightly in response. Maybe.

You're fooling yourself. Go on, it's fine. Lie to yourself, it'll make you feel better.

He clenched his fingers tighter around Ferros's haft to keep his hand from shaking visibly.

That bird, held so much within its depths. Damien was sure he could hear it cry out for home. All its hopes and dreams and deepest desires to back to where it came from, where they all came from, face after face that was warped and twisted but still retained their identities, only barely. It called and Damien wanted nothing more than to cover his ears from the sound. To shield himself from the cry that couldn’t be consoled. Soon clear, chaotic sky turned gray and white as the hound watched the fog roll in, slowly seeping and cutting his line of vision off from others, anyone that could be a source of comfort. Sight soon left him as did tangibility. The fog slipped past frantic fingers as the pup tried his hardest to hear anything, anything other than the eerie silence that was left in the slowly disappearing phoenix’s wake.

Was he …walking? The movement felt foreign, and at the same time normal, like that was what happened when on got lost in its surroundings. He could also feel the presence of something next to him, it was just as featureless as the white canvas surrounding them, but Demi could swear it was there, staying in step with its own. Was it even walking? He was unsure, all the demon dog knew was that it was there.

Are you crossing as well?

The question caught the hound off guard, as he blinked owlishly at the featureless face. “what?” he replied back simply, as if waking from the dreamlike state he was in. was this real life?

I asked, are you crossing as well?

This time, hearing wasn’t an issue as the words rolled around in his mind. “crossing? What are we crossing, it all looks the same.” The boil replied back, trying to find what it was that was being crossed in the deep depths of white. “can you explain?” he tried to ask quickly and whirled back around-

The little …… was it even there in the first place? Whatever had been next to him made its hasty escape, and was replaced with a face he felt he hadn’t seen in years.

The strong, stern face of the elder hellhound of his clan, a grandfather that had been without its grandchild for far too long. “Welcome home dear child.” He said in his low, baritone rumble, his tone like the whistling chimes of welcoming that he missed dearly. The elder’s scent of sandalwood and pine was wafting, the scent of age and forest that made the younger dog’s heart flutter at its aroma. Not far behind lay the scenery of a home that he didn’t know he missed dearly, blossoming from one door to another.

He watched as the image grew in a rush of foliage and well kept doors, soft lantern lights and vines that grew and grew with each passing day. The symphony of villagers and merchants passing off their wares and trading jovially, to the theatre that played the haunting melodies that begun at sun’s set. Skele-flies, their bright bones glowed in the humid air as the flitted from one flower to another, all of it, it was there.

All of it focused on him as he felt a tug in the other direction, a direction away from everything the young hound knew. He refused to budge from his spot when they all swarmed up to him, people he knew with warm smiles as he was congratulated for completing the rites of passage, the growth of a second skull from fear. The feelings of becoming a true member of the clan rose up again from the depths of his heart and he happily immersed himself in the memory.

This was what home felt like, his true home felt like before the training and having to separate from the place he belonged.

"Home."

He could not just stand by and do nothing as the voices whispered...or could he? The giant bird was back, aimed for two portals. Somewhere he heard an actual voice, possibly a horseman, yelling at them to keep it away from the portal. To keep it away from Amityville.

He started toward it and then just stopped in his tracks. What did it really matter? That might have been what the voices were telling him. It did not matter if he attacked. He was worthless. He had said he would become stronger...but he always said that. And he was never strong enough. He was never good enough.

Had he really thought that leaving the Clan was meaningful? They had probably just seen him as one less mouth to feed. And then what, he had come to Amityville? He could not do anything. He could barely read and write, failed at scaring humans and jousting. Failed at fighting. Failed at protecting his friends and teammates. He was just a burden here as well. If he could understand the voices he was sure that was what they would say to him. Worthless.

So he did nothing. Did not attack, it would be futile. If the bird went to Amityville...maybe it would be better if it did. He glanced around as he stood uselessly, eyes at last making out a familiar figure. A tall figure. But he could not walk over to him. He would just disappoint him. Alexander probably already wished that he had never agreed to become his bonded. Was probably thinking even now that Yin had told him he could break it off. If he spoke to him Yin was certain the zomboil would leave and never look back. And if Alexander knew about his dreams of having never left the Clan or returning to it?

He would probably wish they were real.

“I want to go home again.” he asked heartbrokenly as he tried to take a step closer. Just a single step. The weight from the other side that refused to let him move was strong. Strong enough to drag Damien away, as the image got smaller and smaller.

damien. A sound, a single word that seemed to cut through the illusion of home.

Damien. there it went again. a familiar sound, a comforting sound. a sound that he felt he knew for a long time, and yet still so short.

the haze was beginning to fade over green eyes when he blinked the remnants away the ground was back, color blossomed back into existence. and the bird that screeched horribly took to new form.

still the sounds continued, the sounds that woke him from the dream, but entered a nightmare.

DdDdDddaaAAAMDNMMMMmmmMIIIIiiiETEEeneneNNnnnnnnnN

A horrible sound, one that was worse reached his ears as he frantically tried to shut them out. jade eyes were redshot and frantic with each gurgling sound. unmonsterlike,

"WHO SAID THAT?"

"WHO"S CALLING ME?" he tried to call the thing out, to know why it knew his name, why it wanted him.

it never replied to his question, only its cry came back again, each time more unintelligible than the last, but more fervently than before, desperate and wanting.

Useless. Broken. Can't have broken people in the Sun division. We'll have to put you down.

The voice whispered in the back of his head, almost Simon's voice but not quite. It wasn't Roar's either.

"M'not..." Jerry gasped, reeling as he tried to gather himself up. hauling his weapon up as he wobbled to his feet. One leg still wobbled, threatening to buckle, but he ignored it. The portal... there was the portal, just... just go and you'll go home and things will be back to normal.

Is that really home?

Of course, where else was he going to go? It was home, where all his friends were, his new family...

What friends? Jordan is quite happy with his two new pals. H isn't dead, you know where Candace will head. And Sasha.... well. She's probably dead already. Or will be shortly. This is why you can't have nice things.

"Sh-shut up, that's... that's horrible shut up!" He snarled. It was that... that phoenix. It was that... MONSTROSITY doing this.

Roar was quickly aimed as he limped his way closer to the blue portal....

But his shot missed, ripping through nothing.

Useless. Useless.
